Canto is a Mediterranean tapas in Ancoats area of Manchester. Its a more casual restaurant than El Gato Negro. When we arrived it was quiet with just about a couple other tables occupied. It was early to be fair - 630pm on a Thursday. But when we left about 815pm it was busy - always good to see a restaurant busy - better atmosphere and of course means they are doing well. I had looked at the menu before visiting - of course - and had in mind what I wanted already. But the specials potentially could have changed things - but didn't. Canto have a 3 dishes for £15 deal which is for most of the things on the menu. The only things not really in the deal is the seafood dishes - although king prawns are. I went for the king prawns (with garlic and chilli) - delicious. Had lots of garlic, not too much chilli. (Having king prawns when I was in Vietnam has sort of ruined king prawns because they will never be as good as what I had in Vietnam!). They were will very good though. I also had the pork skewers which were OK and shared the Jamon croquettes and Catalan bread with someone. So had 2 x croquettes and couple pieces of the bread. Catalan bread was really good.

The falafels that I ordered looked like cheesebites and the flavour was a bit bland but the tzatziki sauce brough the dish back with some flavour as it was well seasoned (£5.90). I really enjoyed the Saganaki and the way it has been coated in golden crispy goodness against the texture of the cheese that was similar to halloumi ( £7.50). However the best dish for me was Pastichio ( £9.50), greek macaroni with bechemel sauce and a hint of cinnamon. It is layered together similar to a lasagne. The rich sweet tomato sauce really took me back to my greek holiday in Symi. This place is average in terms of value for money but the service is outstanding. Plus the food brings a bit of mediterranean sun into the Village. Didn't get to try Lamb Souvlaki (£12.50) and Lamb Giannotioko (£12.75) as hubby and friend were way too hungry to share food! The waiters also danced which was hilarious (note: some of them quite fit) and then they got everyone in the restaurant holding hands kicking randomly not-so-Turkish-style. I think this was the juncture at which my friend who knows I yelp turned to me and held up five fingers. Finally there was some DJing and we were dancing until at least 1am (and I'm sure if we'd wanted to stay out longer than would have been welcomed). One of the things I loved about Insolito is the Italian authenticity - it is managed and staff by Italians and is really pleasant to see, and the staff are extremely friendly and provide great service. The pizzeria is situated perfectly on Mosley Street opposite the Manchester Art Gallery and near the recently re-developed St. Peter's Square. Kebabish also delivers, but only until midnight so eat before you drink! Cheap and good value, especially as it's BYOB.

Lahori Kebabish is pretty good value for money - for under a tenner, you get three different curries plus loads of pilau rice etc. With cheap prices comes mediocre tastes but we were all plesantly surprised. We'll definitely be trying here again for the next film night - good food to share/ mix and match.
