We went here for the first time based on a personal recommendation. This restaurant is in the heart of downtown Galena. Parking can be a bit challenging. The restaurant is very casual. The adult banana and chocolate milkshake called the "drunken monkey" was outstanding and reasonable. The berry sangria and also the Bahama Mama were both very good and also reasonable. The hamburger with cheddar bacon and egg with the side of their seasoned fries was fresh, delicious and cooked to perfection. I would skip the potstickers for an appetizer though. The owner was nice enough to make a fresh garlic aioli mayonnaise which made the burger even better. The food also came out very quickly. The bartender was very nice and attentive. I am torn on this place. The pros - the food was very fast, and exactly what you'd expect from a diner like this. The waitress was super attentive and quick. The menu was extensive - something for everyone. The cons - the food was meh. Some things were very good - the sweet potato waffle fries and season fries very good, the cheese curds and regular fries were terrible. I'd give the burger a 6/10. Wasn't bad. We got a variety of things to share and it was a-ok. The olive burger was something I haven't seen on other menus, I'm pretty sure, and it was quite good. Potstickers were ok; I liked them better without the sauce, which was a kind of hot and sweet--not sour, but a bit of heat. I would have preferred a ponzu or soy sauce, but the potstickers themselves were good. The Mac and cheese bites were good as well, and onion rings are a perpetual favorite. We took it to go because we're not eating in restaurants yet, and the staff were friendly and efficient. They estimated 15 minutes and it was done within that time. If you're in the mood for a burger in Galena, especially if you're wandering Main Street, Durty Gurts could be a good choice. read more

I was visiting with a few friends and ordered the Kitchen Sink salad. The eggs on the salad were absolutely terrible. They were rotten. Once i started eating it, i had already cut up the contents of the salad to mix it together therefore the entire meal was contaminated. I had my friend try the salad to make sure it wasn't just my taste buds and she agreed that something was not right. When I let our server, Amy know, she truly did not take accountability or acknowledge my concern at all. She responded defensively stating the eggs weren't bad and they were just cooked that morning. She did not apologize or ask if i would like to order something else. She did take the salad off my bill which i was left to just pay for my Diet Coke. I am not looking for a free handout by any means but it seemed like she could have just comped my bill rather than charge me $3.50 for a soda. I was chased down immediately by the owner I had planned on bringing my daughter in for lunch BUT, I have Chrons disease and I first had to use the restroom Which was and is public access She started YELLING at me not to go in unless I was a customer I said I have a medical emergency (Chrons disease) Humiliating enough to have to explain I went in the bathroom and when I came out the woman owner was really really angry with me She proceeded to tell me there is no state law regarding this I said yes, there is (I've included screen shot of Illinois law) she then verbally assaulted me, saying "get out of my fucking restaurant, you are nothing but an old bitch" OMG!! Hubby and I rolled through Galena for a day trip and happened upon Durty Gurts for lunch. It was the MOST popular restaurant on the strip of shopping and eateries with a forty minute wait. We waited. Wanted to try the burgers we saw on the menu that were their specialty. Who doesn't love a good burger?! Once seated inside, they were following a strict social distancing policy. Restaurant deco is walls heavily covered with funny sayings, decals & cartoon pics. Comfortable and fun atmosphere. I had the Sante Fe burger that offered a spicy kick added a side of seasoned fries and picked a chocolate shake (from their variety) topped with LOTS of whipped cream.. just like I love. I loved every freaking bite of my meal!! The burger was too big to finish, so I got half to go. Service was friendly and fast. They kept getting hungry patrons in the doors. I've been back to Durty Gurts multiple times since I wrote my first review, so this update is a long time coming. Durty Gurt's really is one of the better burger places in Northern Illinois. I took my girlfriend there on Saturday for lunch. She'd never been before. I had the Blue Moon Burger. Honestly, it was down right perfect. The flavor, quality, portion size... cooked to perfection. My girlfriend had the City Diner Burger... (apparently I have a thing for women that like eggs on their burgers). She was highly impressed and could see why I wanted to go there for lunch. We both had the seasoned fries, and they were delicious. Crispy exterior, nice flavor. No complaints. The atmosphere is themed, but fun. It's very casual. We visit Galena every December and our first stop is Durty Gurts. The atmosphere is fun, the staff and service is great. The burgers have been impossible for me to finish, but they are so good I always try. The staff are very friendly, not overly intrusive during the meal but they still watch to see if anything is needed. The food is so good and so big! Their burgers are fantastic. We will be back again next year. I suggest arriving close to open on the weekends, it can get quite busy during the rushes. read more

What a fun find! Hilarious signage on walls and very interesting waiting area in foyer! I never have laughed so hard. We were immediately greeted by a very pleasant hostess (owner?) and seated right away. Our wonderful waitress, Amy, had our drink orders delivered to us within 3 minutes of sitting down. She also accommodated every single wish/substitute I asked for on my Olive Burger. Yes, you heard me right, I LOVE olive burgers but they are so hard to find. This one did NOT disappoint. I was 1/2 # and cooked to a perfect medium rare (per our request). My husband got the mushroom swiss burger (his all time go to) and it too was 1/2 # He couldn't finish it (that's a first for him). What impressed him the most was that the mushrooms were FRESH not from a can. We will definitely be coming back next time we are anywhere remotely close to this fine gem of a place. read more

When we calmly said " I think you're being rude " her response was"I'm not rude it's that you don't listen".Very rude service as soon as another big group came (they were not Hispanic) she was nice to them and said "Sit at the bar while we get your table ready. Galena is one of my favorite places for a day trip from Chicago. Every. Single. Time I go to Galena I eat here. And Every. Single. Time I get the grouper. My family have gotten burgers, chili, chicken tenders I think. I always get the grouper. Absolutely delicious. This visit I got the boozy strawberry lemonade. SO GOOD! Of course when you visit Galena, you have to go to Dirty Gurts. This is the first place that people say to eat when you tell them you will be in town. First of all, their burgers are to die for!! They are absolutely huge-a half pound each and the bread is insanely good. The cheesesteak was okay, but the burgers were far and away better. The onion rings were also really good, as were the sweet potato fries. Honestly, I would eat here every day if I could. The atmosphere is cute with all the sayings and signage and the toilets are something (kind of weird) to be seen. Our waitress was sweet and super attentive. The only complaint that I have is that we ordered the rum bucket which is advertised as 32 ounces. There was maybe 10 ounces of actual liquid in the cup and the rest was ice. Kind of a bummer for $10. Cool place and a great atmosphere. read more
