Now that I have discovered this pick-your-own berries and subscription farm, though, all of this has changed. Today was my second visit to the delightfully lush Lazy River Farm down south, in Kent. Lazy River Farm is right now teeming with raspberries and blueberries that you can pick for $1.50 per pound. This is about one-fourth the price I pay for frozen berries at Whole Foods. But please don't make me calculate the cost of my gas in this equation since I am so happy thinking about how I am fiscally savvy to be picking my own. Plus, it's really, really fun! Visit Lazy River Farm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9-5. And be sure to follow all the instructions on the posted signs because these farmers are serious about their wonderful berries.

This isn't a fancy "farm" that's more of an amusement park (looking at you, Carpinitos). It's just a huge patch of blueberries! It's also a nice size to bring a little kid, you won't need to walk long distances. I recommend moving around because different areas of the patch have different blueberry types. I brought the toddler nephews who weren't much help picking. But the staff treated them like they were their own family. The kids played and I picked. It was a nice afternoon activity with a built in fresh snack. The grounds were gorgeous and extremely well maintained. Gorgeous flowers everywhere. Bonus: The owners never use pesticides on the berries. The Buckets are sanitized after each use and the staff show you the best picking areas when you arrive. We will definitely be back.

I prefer the fend-for-yourself places where I find the variety I like most, and pick those. Sampling multiple kinds is part of the fun. But, being an organized person, I totally understand why they do it this way. It's set in the beautiful Green Valley, and rhe old barn is a treasure. They have family antiques (to see) mixed with Polish pottery to buy. Naturally, it's all blueberry themed. Bring containers to take your berries home. They don't provide boxes. The market takes place right near the big fountain and the Kent Library. It takes up one whole street, so it's nothing in comparison to Kent Cornucopia Days but I mean, it's just a weekly market so don't expect it to be bigger than it is. There's a good variety of vendors - tons of stands sporting local produce, local food products, and several stands with people who make all sorts of products ranging from soaps to baby clothes! There's a ton to look at. There's also several stands that have the type of flowers that you'd find at Pike Place - the arrangements are GORGEOUS and pretty big! The most expensive ones cost $15 - which is a hell of a deal in my opinion! You won't spend hours at the Kent Farmers Market but it's a great place to swing through on your Saturday morning before starting your day. Who doesn't love to support local?!
