This was, without a doubt, the worst experience I've ever had with American Airlines. We checked in online the night before our 6:00 a.m. flight, so when we arrived at the airport 45 minutes before departure, all we needed was to check our bags. I have traveled out of this airport my entire life, and arriving 45-60 minutes before an early morning flight has always been sufficient. Instead of offering any assistance, the employee working the counter, Jen, refused to take our bags and was unnecessarily rude and confrontational. Rather than trying to help or explain our options professionally, she harassed my husband and me and treated us with complete disrespect. When we asked to rebook our flight, Jen refused to help us with that as well. We had to find another employee who was willing to assist us. I understand that airlines have policies and deadlines, but customer service still matters. Jen showed no empathy, no willingness to help, and turned what could have been a minor inconvenience into an incredibly frustrating experience. I think I would call this an airport in progress. There are no jetways and the airport seems to struggle with the demand. There are few dining options and the airport feels very isolated. Our flight was late so the car rental had closed and it cost 90 to get into town. There is nothing around if your flight comes in late. read more

I came to stay at a springs resort. I flew into DRO as it was the closest airport. This was the cutest airport! They have this little mom and pop store. Service is wonderful. Beautiful views. Super small and be prepared lyft and uber is not heavily available but plenty of rental cars. read more

Thought I posted this review earlier...but I guess I forgot...My wife and I flew into this little airport on our way to Telluride, Colorado...It's definitely a small airport...but that works in its favor...TSA was quick and friendly (I think there were maybe five officers total)...and all the gates are right there...so no long walks or confusion...The rental car pickup and drop-off is conveniently on-site too...Not a bad little airport at all...easy...efficient...and stress-free. read more

Small but a very mighty airport. The staff here I felt was extremely personable and helpful. The planes coming in and out are small and your luggage is loaded under not inside with you because of how small the aircradt is. You will be able to find your luggage on the tarmac when you exit the plane. The airport is small, clean, well lit and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The have an excellent restaurant called Tailwind that you can grab a drink or a drink and some food while you wait for your ride. Braden whipped me up an amazing burger with white cheddar cheese and Moriah whipped up an awesome Margarita. Thank you. Both were very yummy and fast! The restaurants, restrooms and gift shop are all well marked so you can't miss them at all. Again small airport not much to get lost in. Really refreshing to fly into an airport that notices you as a traveler. read more

Huge props and thank you to the United team at Durango Airport! My flight to Denver was cancelled due to terrible weather. There were about 20+ of us in line and United immediately opened up 4 counters to help us all! The United staff is so friendly, helpful and NO ONE got mad or yelled. Why can't big airports learn from this United team. I looked around and it appears that everyone got re-booked or flying the next day. Huge kudos and thank you to the United team! THIS IS THE WORST AIRPORT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. My husband and my two children were supposed to fly back today a day after me. He is their bags are checked and on the plane but yet they won't let my children through security EVEN THOUGH HE HAS THEIR BIRTH CERTIFICATES IN HAND. NO ONE will help them ! Apparently, no one in management is their SHOCKER!! My baby now has no supplies needed since they are currently heading to Denver without them. My husband is alone with two children, no supplies, and no one will even give him the time of day !! There was no need for any of this to happen. No one at the airport will answer the phone or call me back which is INSANE!!! We already had our luggage damaged when we arrived which has also been a nightmare to resolve!! Cute little airport! Super easy in and out. (Reminded me of Flagstaff airport way back when I was going to school at NAU.) One terminal, one TSA checkpoint. They are quick and efficient. No jetway, so if the weather is not ideal you will have to deal with it while boarding your plane. Plan accordingly. They have a small bar area inside if you want to grab a beer or drink while you wait. They also have a water bottle filling station too. Rental car area is right next to the building! When you return, just pick an appropriate rental brand spot and let the agent inside know the number. read more

Its a very small airport as expected. Only one place to grab a bite That I remember. Only a small homestyle cafe/gift shop featuring quick breakfast foods. A few vending machines scattered all around. Saw zero employees around except TSA since its mandatory. Outdated decor with grey colored carpet and wooden panels as walls with decor such as fake bushes/leaves. Not your typical commercial airport, but a unique one id say. Weirdest part was the boarding gate was just a large white tent with this brown old carpet inside. The smell is quite fragrant. Many Scattered chairs and a few vending machines. Overall, a definitely interesting airport with the small town feel. Don't expect to see your usual food/drink kiosks around. read more

Bottom Line: Small, no frills airport but it has the necessities. My husband and I recently flew in and out of Durango - La Plata County Airport. We flew in with United on the General Aviation side and flew out with RedTails on the Private Aviation side so we got to see both ends of the airport. Overall, our experience at this little airport was fine. When landing I appreciated that there were water bottle filing stations and that bathrooms, baggage claim and rental car counters were near by. I missed the food options but I did see the gift shop at the airport. Baggage was being unloaded as we were walking off the plane on the tarmac so I thought it was odd that it didn't show up on the belt for another 20 minutes. Everyone could have grabbed their own luggage faster but I don't know if the airport or the airline is responsible for baggage handling. Since this was a small airport it was nice that rental cars were right out side the door. While waiting for our flight out we enjoyed watching all of the airport traffic including United flights, American flights, little planes, little leer jets, etc. It was quite busy and entertaining to watch. read more

This place had the friendliest, nicest TSA employees ever. It was almost pleasant to go through security. Whereas TSA & security are a dread flying out of NYC, and small airports often have overenthusiastic security, I got through security feeling very happy here. Beyond security (literally and figuratively), there's very little to this airport. There's a small cafe serving sandwiches and coffee, but I'd suggest, if possible, to eat and load up on caffeine prior to arriving. read more

Been here for over 7 hours past my take off time. The incompetence in communication at the airport between ground staff and tower. De-icing planes then making them wait and because you have waited to take off you now have to de-ice again. Your plane has done this several times now you are low on fuel and pretty soon your are hoping that the flight crew doesn't time out. read more

The airport parking is tragic! Be prepared to wait because the payment machines are either out of order or nonfunctional. Last week we had completely move the cars backward to have one car return to the main terminal to gouge out their ticket. This week the indoor machine is out and the only one outdoor exit is available. With the amount of money they are making on us one would think they could Make this smooth. The Durango-La Plata County Airport is the premier (and only?) airport in the Colorado four corners area. DRO is small and is served by commuter jets and props representing Frontier, United, and US Air. Hence, all commercial air roads to and from Durango lead through either Denver or Phoenix. There's a local cafe and a decent gift shop in the public area, but once you're past security, only a few vending machines are available. So it doesn't pay to check in too early unless you have lots of reading material or have a screen to stare at. Folks here are friendly and all seem to know each other. They also do multiple jobs and seem to enjoy having you around. DRO is also a long cab ride from Durango and not the easiest place to find directions-wise. And it's actually cheaper to rent a car if you want to go to town. You can also walk from the parking lot or your rental car spot and be in the terminal in less than a few minutes. There's also no one chasing you off when you drop off your passengers and want to linger a bit. read more

My home airports are Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway. Durango - LaPlata County Airport could fit at the end of a single terminal, where I come from. But don't start thinking that I'm complaining. In fact, just the opposite. I love going through this little airport. Reasons to love Durango-LaPlata County Airport. 1) TSA screening takes 10 minutes. Really. Even when there are a several people in front of you. BTW, there are never more than several people. 2) You don't have to walk half a mile to your gate. You walk, maybe, 50 feet. 3) The ladies' bathrooms are clean and well-stocked. 4) There is only one luggage carousel. It's impossible to run around for half an hour, trying to figure out where United has switched your luggage. It's all in one place. 5) Car rental agencies are opposite the luggage carousel. You may have a bit of a wait to pick up your car, because the person in front of you is asking for things like a map of the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport. I've used Enterprise and Budget, and each time -- maybe because I'm prepared with all the proper paperwork? -- I'm in my car in five minutes. And returning is just as easy, if not easier. 6) There's a small restaurant. 7) The seats in the waiting area are comfy. 8) It's in Colorado! The only complaint I have is, if your flight is delayed for any reason, there's NOTHING to do! Not even a TV screen in the waiting area. You can buy a few magazines in the gift shop, but unless you're prepared to entertain yourself for hours, you are screwed. read more

Regional airport yo, no Starbucks. That's pretty common really. Free wifi is a plus. Two gates for American or United. Flights are within a few minutes of each other for departures. Arrivals vary. But if you're expecting SFO be warned. Large waiting area for the American side. Food and a few beer taps. Televisions but that side seems to be an addition. Not a real part of the original building construction. About a forty minute to hour trip to Denver anyway so grab something in Colorado. Probably food at your hotel anyhow and you'll get a beverage service on the plane. Food before security and a gift shop of sorts. In winter they've had some issues deplaning people so that's a pain. But apart from that board and go. Usually a bit bumpy since it can get windy and you have to fly over mountains (obviously) otherwise this airport is a breeze. Security and gate agents are nice. Board and get onto your large airport for your next flight. The alternative is driving hours through CO. Also nice but if you're coming in to ski it's a plus. Rent your car and walk mere steps right out to it of the terminal. read more

Leaving, however, things get a little backed up, especially if your flight's at three. The TSA here seems to be really strict too. Also, be sure to print your boarding pass when you leave; they won't accept your phone because TSA does not have the scanner for that. Just get here an hour early and you'll be fine. read more

This airport is small and super easy to walk to your plane. However the people running or lack there of have lots of training on policy and zero on common sense. I show up for United Airlines flight and I am forced to check in at the front deck because United airlines does not allow you to check in online if you do not have a bag to checkin. I knew this and have done this at many other airports but this airport does not provide an employee for you to bypass the kiosk. So I go to TSA they say can't let you go through without a ticket. Go back to untied and wait for the employee to get there. I can see my gate from TSA. I am one of a handful of people at this airport and my frustration continues to escalate as I watch the only United Airlines employee check everyone in close the gate and the plane I should have been on fly away. The most interesting thing is there are more TSA employees here than there are actual airline employees. I have been coming to Durango regularly for the last 21 years. I fly a lot. Both domestically and internationally. I absolutely love Durango. Love it. But... I have literally lost track of the amount of times flights have been delayed, canceled, etc... literally the worst airport in the world from my experience. How to survive Durango airport: 1. DO NOT leave your hotel until you've made certain things are in schedule. It's by no means a cozy airport to be delayed at. 2. NEVER have anything important planned where where you're traveling or even the next day. Seriously. This is probably the 4th time it's taken me 2 days to leave Durango. 3. Wait on returning the rental car. Sure... park it. But check on things before returning car. There's a high probability you'll need it again to get back into town for the night. And twice I've returned only to find out I can't rent it right back. lol. 4. Relax. It's completely out of your control. If you happen to leave on time consider yourself lucky. read more

This was a tiny airport and the only airlines that I flew in and out of here were United Airlines and Frontier. I don't know if there were any other airlines here but I can't imagine there being more. There were a lot of small planes so most likely you'll be walking out of your plane and onto the tarmac. If you want to get a close-up view of the airplane you're boarding, then you'll definitely have your chance here. Once inside of the airport, there was a small waiting area as well as the security checkpoint. The baggage claim was small which was located right next to the rental car counters. The airport was one of those quick in and out places as long as you're early enough for your flights (specifically Frontier). Rental car returns were easy since the parking lot was right next to the terminal so walking a few hundred feet to the checkpoint was about it. This was an okay airport and should relatively easy to get in and out. read more

This is a very small airport with not much to offer so prepare to be bored if you have a very long layover here. Sometimes it is miserable getting checked in because it seems that the same staff have multiple roles making this a slow process. Tiny airport but hey it's Durango! Usually don't have any problems here but weather can be an issue in the winter so beware. NEVER go through Denver if you have to connect because they always shut down that airport. I always go through Phoenix which is nice, clean and run well. Only a few check in counters which usually don't have a line so that's good. Security is usually quick too so there's no need to come super early. The little food place they have though is not good at all. I'd wait until I get to Durango to grab a bite to eat or bring something with you if you are flying out. read more

I'm pretty sure you can stand in one spot and look at everything that is in this airport. Yes it's a small airport, but they get the job done. The most important thing is make sure you are at least an hour before your flight. At 30 minutes prior to take-off the employees have to leave the counters and work in the back. (load the plane & other various tasks that involves a safe take-off.) I failed to have a printed boarding pass & I'm too poor to own a smartphone. So needless to say I learned the lesson the hard way. I missed my flight because TSA said no pass no entry. When the United staff came back up front after seeing my flight off; they were very efficient and made sure I was put on the next available flight. So those of you who think I'll just go to the KIOSK and print my ticket will be left standing there waiting for the next flight. The airlines that fly out of Durango are United, U.S. Airways, Frontier, & American. The plane I flew on looked like the size of a private jet. I was glad it was a jet versus a Cessna.....if it was a prop plane all I could think of was the scene from La Bamba when Richie's Mom finds out his plane didn't make it. Richie!!!!!!!!! Anyways, the shops/food close up around 6:00pm, they have vending machines to satisfy the munchies. The restrooms are clean and all of the staff, even TSA are friendly. Oh one more thing, if you a 1st time flyer to this location, you won't believe where it's located. It's nestled between the mountains, for a second I thought they just tow us to the peak and let go, hoping that gravity will give us enough momentum to take off. read more

Durango Airport is so bad, Greyhound now looks like luxury travel. It's small, quaint and utterly inept. Flight options are limited, staffing is minimal,which means the slightest perturbation means that you are stuck. Stuck means STUCK since they have about 5 flights a day and have no means or will to recover. Slush - literally slush - has delayed flights for hours. Slush. At an airport that is the gateway to some epic ski resorts. Save yourself some misery and go to a proper airport like ABQ. Driving a rented Geo Metro for the extra two hours is a much better option. This airport is clearly the third circle of hell if things don't go your way. read more

As I found myself awaiting a delayed plane I was delighted to find a lovely lady by the name of dennise. She works in the new addition bar/snack lounge. Her dedication to please and serve her clients was a breath of fresh air. She welcomed each patron and made sure everyone was more than taken care of.
