Best smoked meat sandwich outside of Montreal. The simple sandwich is a full compliment of meat - always excellent!

Portugalos Restaurant Ottawa - Rice for the seafood platter

The Long Version: My family and I were celebrating Lunar New Year a bit late and we made up for it by having an epic feast. Our theme was East meets West. My brother got a dinner for 6 at The Mandarin and I got the Combo 6 at Portugalos. The Combo 6 ($69.50) consisted of 1 1/2 chickens, a rack of ribs, a box of fries, a box of rice, 2 boxes of salad, 8 buns and 3 small containers of Piri Piri sauce. I loved that the chicken was already cut into pieces. The meat was tender and fall off the bone. The seasoning was delicious and had a bit of a spicy kick. I also loved that the ribs were also pre-cut. The ribs were also fall off the bone and had good flavour. The fries were shoestring fries and were good. My little neices loved them. The rice was soft and fluffy. It had a tomato flavour with herbs. I liked that the salad came with the dressing on the side. It was romaine lettuce, baby spinach, kale and shredded carrots. The dressing was a creamy green dressing. It was good. The buns were soft and fresh. The sauce was a bit on the oily side, but it had a fiery kick to it. The food was a big hit at the get-together. We got takeout, but they have a spacious dining room. I called in my order the day before and I was able to pick it up right at opening. Service was pleasant. There free parking in the plaza parking lot. Portugalos is where Olito's Cafe used to be. Portugalos has a location in Gatineau as well (which was their original location, this one in Blackburn Hamlet is their second location). Review #53 (2025)

The service is good, the server is friendly. The restaurant decor is nice with the pictures of the various places in Portugal The food is not as good as I have tried before at the Gatineau location. Not sure they are the same owner. Cataplana is very small and the sea food is not at the best in terms of freshness, I know it is difficult to have fresh seafood in Ottawa especially in the winter time, nevertheless, it certainly can be better for what we had. The steak is ok but it is not a steak house quality, this is something they should look into, perhaps go for some fine quality filet mignon and raise the price so people will appreciate for the quality of the food and would not mind of paying extra for the quality. The owner is a young couple and I think people in Blackburn Hamlet should go there give it a try to support the local business. Good Luck Portugalos hope to see you again later on in the year.

The Long Version: I'm not much of a beer drinker, although my husband is. Luckily this microbrewery not only makes beer but they also make seltzer, and I love seltzer! Lol. Their seltzer flavours are limited, so I've tried most of them. I've tried the Berry Whip, Cool Melon and Orange Cream. They occasionally have limited edition flavours and I recently tried the Tiger Fruit one (kiwi and mixed berries). I find that most of their core seltzer flavours are pretty ordinary and not as creative as their beer flavours. Like they have an Earl Grey Marmalade beer and they had a chocolate chip pecan cookie-flavoured beer. I wish they had more creative seltzer flavours. I would totally drink an Earl Grey Marmalade seltzer! Lol. Ironically, my husband does not like what he calls "weird" beer flavours, so he wasn't crazy about the ones my brother gave him for his birthday, lol, but he likes the more "normal" flavours. Oh, I recently tried their newest flavour, Grape Jelly, and this is my favourite flavour so far. The brewery is in an industrial park. They have seating and have a limited food menu, mostly snacks. They have a corner where you can buy cans to-go. Their beers are also available to purchase at the LCBO and their seltzers are available at several retailers like some coffee shops (such as Equator Coffee) and some grocery stores (such as Natural Food Pantry). There is free parking on-site. Review #222 (2025)

The seltzer came in short glass bottles with a colourful label, depending on the flavour that you got. I don't know what happened, but this company died and somehow resurrected itself. I don't see this brand often in my area. In July 2024, I was in Winnipeg at a Giant Tiger. It featured a limited tiger tail flavour in the company's City Seltzer line. Proceeds went to Food Banks Canada. It also had berry whip and city citrus varieties. I bought a can of each flavour. I loved them all. Tiger tail had orange, vanilla, and anise flavours. They worked well. It was my first time having anise in a seltzer. It's too bad that it's no longer available. I'd get it again. The berry whip and citrus seltzers were yummy. The fruit and citrus flavours were nice. They weren't in-your-face strong. They were refreshing and perfect. I was in Steinbach and Winnipeg this past summer. Sadly, no tiger tail or any City Seltzer were available at the Giant Tiger locations that I had visited in either city. A few months ago, I was shopping at my local Whole Foods Market. I stumbled across a City Seltzer display. What?! I saw two flavours that I had never seen before: orange cream and cool melon. I grabbed the former to try. I love anything that tastes like an orange creamsicle. This one was so good. I keep dreaming about it. Whole Foods sells City Seltzers in individual cans and a case. I like trying out the former first before I commit to the latter. At this rate, I'd get a case of each flavour available. I still need to try the cool melon. I'm hoping that it makes me feel like I'm at a spa when I drink it. My friend, Jennifer, let me know that this company is in Ottawa. Note to self: I must visit this store the next time I'm in the city. I'm a fan and I want a t-shirt. All the bubbles. No troubles. True. I love this seltzer! (422)
