I ordered a plain bagel and medium ice regular. To my dismay the coffee was extremely watered down and the bagel was absolutely awful.

Best donut place I've been to! Been waiting a while to try Donut Shack. First time I went there…read moreyears ago, it was after 8am and it seemed like everything was sold out. Second time they were closed during 4th of July week. Finally got a chance to go there recently at 6am and got a dozen donuts, along with a coffee roll and coffee. Wanted to try it all. Unfortunately their chocolate-themed donuts are only available on Friday and Saturday, I believe they said. And for the ones like maple, need to special order ahead of time. Still got a ton of marshmallow donuts, an apple filled, lemon filled, some honey dipped, and a few others. Everything tasted amazing. The donuts are very much worth it for the price. It will be hard to find a place that has better donuts than Donut Shack!

Donut Shack in Lowell is an absolute hidden gem and I am still thinking about these donuts…read more First, a heads up: this place is not easy to find. They share a door with a barbershop and the storefront is tiny. From what I understand, they mostly sell wholesale to other restaurants, but they open up a small window of sales to walk-in customers. When they are sold out, they are done for the day, so get there early! Now for the donuts. Delicious, delicate, and honestly some of the best I have ever had. These are not your average gas station donuts. You can taste the care and craftsmanship in every bite. But what really blew me away was the hospitality. I had already picked out 8 donuts when I was told it was cash only. I had none on me, but offered to run out and come back if she could hold my box. Without hesitation, she handed me the box and told me to pay whenever I could. She was completely serious. That kind of trust and generosity is rare and it genuinely made my day. A few things to know before you go: it is cash only, the space is small with just a few tables and chairs, and they sell out fast. But it is absolutely worth the effort. Support this business. You will not regret it.

In a place where la famiglia é tutto, they know how to greet you. We were invited in by the quintessential Italian signs as much as the complex aromas. The pastries were a delight, but it was me who was delighted by the Old World style adorning the newly renovated space. A mixture of textures, from wood to stone work to leather chairs helped create the ambiance, and the cathedral ceiling was highlighted by painted white rafters. Today I tried the spiral ham on brioche breakfast sandwich and a café Americano, and I got a pastry with cannoli filling to go. I'm not sure what I'll get next time, but I know this bakery is a recipe for something great about our country. I'm no Maine scholar, but I'm pretty sure the state motto: "Dirigo," translates to "The pastries are delizioso," (give or take.)

The donuts may have been the best I've had - the Boston cream was delightfully fluffy and bursting with custard that was not overpoweringly sweet. I also snacked on a plain croissant on the drive and was content with the crunchy top and honeycomb inside. I saw someone else enjoying a gelato - that will have to be the next on my list! There are two parking areas so if you can't find a spot, drive to the other side of the building!
