Newberry reminds me of your hometown bakery where everyone gathers in the morning for their donuts and coffee before heading off to work. Very much like many of the shops in the Bel Air area. The employees are super nice at Newberry. Really taking their time to provide great customer service to each patron that strolls through the doors. Although it was lunch time we settled on breakfast sandwiches with homefries. And I of course had to grab a donut because it's a must, and a latte. The breakfast sandwich was just what you would want to start your day, a savory piece of meat and cheese on a soft bagel. But the star of the show was the homefries. Cooked and seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside and a soft texture on the inside. We both loved the potatoes. My glazed donut was divine, pillowy with just the right amount of glaze to not make the donut too sweet. The latte was a little to sweet for me, but I'm a little finicky with the sugar level in many caffeinated drinks. All the times I've ventured into Bel Air I never thought to stop at Newberry and I'm glad I finally did. I'll definitely be back to try more of their yummy donuts and breakfast sandwiches in the future.

There is a Hot Wheels display with a "take a car, leave a car" sign. Our young child didn't have a car to leave, so we encouraged him to speak up and ask if he could take one and bring a replacement back after his soccer game. As he started to ask, the owner didn't give him an opportunity to finish. Instead, she immediately told him that if he didn't have a replacement car, that he's stealing. The way this was handled was completely unnecessary and especially upsetting for a young child. He was devastated and kept crying, saying "I don't steal." And that's the point, if he intended to steal, he wouldn't have asked. We are teaching him to do the right thing. What kind of experience do you want your young customers to have? There was an opportunity to hear the child out and simply explain the policy. Or even offer to hold the car for a bit until he could return with his car. Instead, an innocent interaction turned into an experience that left a young child feeling like he had been accused of being a thief. A little patience and kindness would have made all the difference. We actually went back afterward, and spoke with the owner about how she spoke to a 5 year-old. We explained how upset he was and how the interaction affected him. Her only response was, " I understand, but we've had 24 cars stolen." There was no apology, no acknowledgment that the situation could have been handled differently, and no accountability for how she spoke to a young child who was simply trying to ask a question and do the right thing. What a missed opportunity. Had she simply shown our child a little kindness, we could have easily turned the experience into a positive one and had our child come back with multiple cars to contribute for the next little person who may not have a car on hand. Instead, we walked away feeling completely different about the establishment.

I was able to restrain myself and get just a half dozen, which was perfect to split with my wife and our two boys. Opted for the French Toast, which has a nice sugary coating that's as much a texture experience as a flavor one. It's not super cheap, but for fancy donuts, it could cost a lot more than it does.
