Dundas Video is a cool little dive bar right on Dundas Street W. I was looking for a little bar that was near my Airbnb that had video games and I was happy to find a spot so close. Dundas Video is a small bar, which is part of it's charm. It's really dark. Even though it wasn't really late when I was there and still light out, the inside felt really dark. The bar has video games set up in stations and while they have a variety of game systems, the variety of games themselves was small, with the exception of the NES. I tried playing the SEGA and it was broken, sadly. One thing to note is that it's cash only so make sure to come prepared. A beer will run you around $7 CAD. It would be a cool place to come and hang out with friends for a bit before heading somewhere else. I did feel like it lacked something that would make me want to stay for awhile- all the seating options were rather uncomfortable, maybe that was it? I just couldn't imagine being here all night with friends drinking beer, but I could see us here stopping for one or two before going on to the next stop. read more

I came here to have a drink and play some retro games. The place is nice and unique. They have sega and Nintendo. They also had the PS2 with good games that I never played before. They also played a movie for ppl who do not play games. They had duck hunts with a working gun. They have basic drinks which gets the job done. Over all loved the place will definitely come back. Dundas Video was a spur-of-the-moment destination. A friend of mine knew the owner of the bar and asked if I wanted to check it out. He told me there were a number of retro games stationed all throughout the bar and I figured it was worth looking into. When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere. A small, but cozy dive that had, as my friend promised, retro video game stations dispersed all throughout the bar. There was a SNES, NES, Genesis, N64, a duck-hunt station and an arcade machine with 500 games loaded into it. I had to do a double-take to realize this was a bar and not an arcade, but if you recorded a video in here and applied a VHS filter on it, it would certainly look like it was filmed in the early 90s. The owner treated us to a beer and a glass full of quarters to enjoy playing some games on the arcade machine, which we happily did. Although, it was interesting to note that the machine had games loaded that were perhaps not even arcade games to begin with. My friend and I struggled with a few of them to accept the coin for player 2 to begin playing. It undoubtedly ate a few quarters but considering we spent none to begin with, this really wasn't a problem. For actual paying customers though, this machine may best be approached with caution. I noticed a large menu on the wall that listed nothing but video game titles. For a moment, I thought that all the drinks in the bar were named after video games. On a second glance, however, I realized that they were literally the entire catalogue of games available to play. My friend and I requested Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES, and the bartender opened a drawer behind him and pulled out a NES cart. He slid the NES and TV towards us, and before we knew it, we were jamming to some Mario Bros 3 on a CRT display while downing a beer. The nostalgia was overwhelming. The basement was dedicated to the bathrooms but even so, it maintained the design motif. There was a lobby of sorts downstairs that separated the men and women's bathroom. In it there was another CRT set laying plainly on a table. A VCR with a cassette of Back to the Future was sitting next to it just waiting for someone to hit play. I thought it was rather funny. I can't imagine anyone stationing themselves between two bathrooms to watch Back to the Future. In the main area there was a projection screen showing Ghostbusters, while a DJ spun some laid back electronic music. The crowd was, to my expectation, a rather hipster showing. The sorts of folks you might see doing school work in a local coffee shop. Not that this was a bad thing by any means, it's just the sort of crowd this place would undoubtedly gather. All in all, fantastic atmosphere, fantastic premise, worth seeing just to relive some 90s nostalgia alone. Highly recommended. read more

So many cool retro games! Not just Nintendo, but Sega, Playstation, and more that are slipping my mind right now. I came here a while ago so I don't remember if these rules still apply, but there's no fee to play games, you just have to order something. I've been there twice (so far) once with friends and another time on a date and it's great for both! They have a really good selection of beers too. If you have never tried it, PLAY DUCK HUNT. I have to say that 80s & 90s nostalgia is not totally my jam. I am not against it, but I lived through it once already and so... but that being said, I love this place. The first time we came here we were walking back to the hood from city center when we spotted it from across the street. We had seen it before but by day it looked a shuttered video store. At night, there were lights and people smoking outside. So we dropped in for a beer. There was a sign mentioning that a band was going to play but we assumed we would be gone before that happened. We took a seat in the center of the room, kind of in front of where the band might play. We had a beer and enjoyed the projection of Mad Max on vintage low-res VHS, then the movie changed and it was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, then the VHS crapped out, and the bartender started streaming The Karate Kid from a laptop, which also crapped out. Nice to know both systems have their flaws. By this time the bearded hipsters of the aforementioned band had ambled in and were chit-chatting with what I assume (and was later confirmed) were their groupies (supportive friends in contemporary parlance). The idea of getting caught listening to a Monday night bar band wasn't our idea of fun, so I headed to the washroom for a quick one and we were to be on our way. But by the time I got back they had, ninja like, taken the stage and were starting the show - with crowd work no less. And we were singled out and welcomed as the only people there other than their friends. So we were trapped at least until mid-first song, but we were front and center so any exit at this point was going to be uncomfortable. But the band - ill Evans - was fantastic! A real surprise. We even had another beer. Dundas Video located by Dundas & Bathurst, is like a 90s fever dream with various consoles from the era available like the N64, PlayStation and Super Nintendo available to play. Various 80s and 90s films are projected up on a big screen. It's as if all the memories from my childhood had morphed into a glorious dive bar. I decided to stop by after a show at the Garrison. When I went, there a good mix of hip hop and Gremlins playing in the background. It's literally as if a basement in the late 90s had turned into a dive, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible. The atmosphere is incredible. All you do is ask the bartender for the game you want to play and that's it, everything is completely free to play. The selection of beer is great, all craft and all are only $6.50. It's all tall cans, nothing on draught, I know mixed drinks are also available but I didn't have any. Also heads up DV is cash only but there's an ATM available. This place is a hidden gem among Toronto dives, up there with the best of them. Dundas Video has become my new favorite bar. read more

What happens when you take a mediocre bar like Magpie, splash some blue paint on the walls and give it a rec room theme of vintage video games, push some tables off to the side to make room for dancing, add some of the best dance floor DJs you'll hear anywhere and then rename the place 'Dundas Video'? You get a helluva good place to spend a Saturday night! The staff is pleasant and unobtrusive, (and that's great for bouncers) the cocktails look interesting, and the canned beer selection is compelling with the best ones knocked off the chalkboard list as the night wears on. I went to see my friend John O. and his band play to a packed room. The stage was pushed into the back corner and at eye level so while not ideal, makes dancing to a live show much more exhilarating. Behind the stage there was a movie playing from a projector, Cool World (1992) a stellar classic 'A comic strip vamp seeks to seduce her cartoonist creator in order to cross over into the real world.' It suited the 90s theme of video games set up to reach out to patrons with their bubble screens and dancing chunky graphics. The basement bathrooms had a similar fun theme. Check this gem out in the burgeoning strip of Dundas just west of Bathurst. read more

I went to a friends birthday and the place is pretty cool. They have a great selection of beer and cocktails at the bar and the servers are fast a friendly. They cherry on top here is the fact that they have a ton of vintage video games all around the bar. They have everything from NES to super NES to game gear with a ton of games for you to play. The issue I had was that it was really hot inside and they didn't open the doors in the front to get air to circulate through the bar. read more

Best ever! Hands down! Always wanted to open a place like this. I knew somewhere someone else had this idea. So well executed, especially with the menu based systems makes life easy on both sides no cartridge hassle. New fav spot in Toronto. If you grew up with these systems as did I, and have most of them anyway, still super fun to go play with pals and meet new people to play against. Really cool place w/ great vintage games! The reason for 3 stars all stems from the day that we chose to go.. firstly the fridge was broken, meaning there were no snacks - and we were all pretty excited to try the menu- BUT they did say we could order in anything we wanted which was awesome. Also should mention the drinks weren't cheap (but what bar is these days) The night was going great, we were having a blast playing street fighter on PS2 and they were setting up for a live show (jackpot) when the night really took a turn for the weird. The live show was odd, and to be fair the man introducing the performers had warned it would be- but it wasn't the sounds at all that bothered our group, it was the vibe of the room when they started playing/mixing. Everyone there had clearly come for the show as none of them played any games or even appeared to order drinks. The sounds being played were trance-like, very low, and mellow- you could hear a pin drop. Which was problematic for a group of semi-drunks playing video games in VS mode! We all stopped talking to respect the set, but that wasn't enough for the room because even when I got up to pee at least 5 people turned to look at me.. it was awkward to say the least. Anyway BE WARNED if you're looking for a cool laid back place to play video games go here, just not on the first Tuesday of every month!!! On the reverse- if you're into some alternative mellow trance sounds maybe this is the place for you, to each their own! read more
