Hubby's Tacos al Carbon was delicious. Great marinade! Tip: If you like mole, but don't want enchiladas, just ask them to sub Mole for the sauce on any of the chicken plates. I had a side and it was delicious! If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. For the most part, it met my expectations, just a few things keep me from giving them 4. But - we will be back. :)

Ordered the Street Taco Sauce as well to go with the complimentary Chips and Salsa - house salsas were on point, but the Street Taco Sauce kicked the experience up a good notch - spicy but not overwhelmingly so! Good stuff - chips were not at all greasy. The food was flavorful and Fajitas for one were more than sufficient for two. Overall cost was $90 (3 persons) including cost of the Street Taco Sauce, Fresh Jalapeños, 18% tip and taxes. The best part of the visit was the hospitable service and friendly engagements with Jolie and Kayo. Barring a couple of missteps (including a wrong order keyed in and charged on the bill), which were immediately corrected, the overall experience was great. Definitely planning a return visit!

My son just like their tacos al carbon since it is his usual. Their salsa is definitely a HIT! Red or green, they are both so spicy and delicious. First impressions were positive. The restaurant was clean, pleasant, and the staff were polite and attentive. Unfortunately, that's where the experience peaked. The menu itself is surprisingly thick and heavy, which gave us the impression there would be plenty of options. Instead, it felt like a lot of pages dedicated to not a lot of choices. After ordering, we waited somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes before the first entrée arrived. I ordered the ribeye, cooked medium rare. It was decent enough, but certainly not memorable, especially at the price point. My wife ordered the salmon, which managed to achieve a level of dryness usually reserved for desert climates. The real star of the show, however, was the vegetables and not in a good way. If you're looking to dramatically increase your sodium intake, you've come to the right place. The vegetables were overcooked, soggy, and so aggressively salted that I briefly wondered if the chef had sourced the water directly from the Dead Sea. Every bite felt like a challenge to my blood pressure. We also ordered the Combo Stir Fry Udon. The noodles were perfectly edible, but the accompanying vegetables suffered the same fate: limp, overcooked, and swimming in what tasted like concentrated seawater. In the end, the biggest issue is the disconnect between price and quality. The restaurant presents itself as a premium dining experience, but the food simply doesn't justify the cost. Clean restaurant, courteous staff, average entrées, and vegetables that could preserve a mummy. Sadly, not a place I'd rush back to for another birthday.

The restaurant was really nice with dim lighting that sets the tone for an intimate date night. We ordered a wedge salad, crab cakes, steak, fries, and mac n cheese. Presentation of the food was really nice and overall the food was decent. We anticipated this steakhouse being comparable to a Perry's or Kirby's, however customer service and food quality did not meet the bar as we expected. There were a few tables that opened up outside however the hostess never informed us that we could move to the patio. That was disappointing as we mainly came for the music. TL:DR it is a solid choice for a special experience and a great steak. I would go again. We started off with a couple of mocktails: The Blood Orange Fizz and the mint virgin Old Fashioned. The Old Fashioned was a very tasty concoction--no alcohol burn of course but it captured the sharpness of an Old Fashioned and I really liked the mint. The Blood Orange Fizz was a mild disappointment--it had very little fizz and really needed it. Flavor was OK but not as good flat. We later got a bourbon flight, which was delivered by the bourbon sommelier and was quite fun. For starters we got a wedge salad, the Steakhouse Meatballs, and the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. The salad was fine, a standard garden salad with nice fresh ingredients. The meatballs were excellent--a steak and pork belly blend with a blueberry pepper sauce with onion strings. Great texture, lots of umami and good salt flavor. I absolutely want these next time. Same with the bacon wrapped scallops. They come on a bed of 3-cheese grits that were wonderfully creamy. The sauce has just a little heat. The scallops and bacon were cooked just right. Their seafood entrees are served over these grits, and though we didn't get any seafood I would try some next time for the grits. On to the mains: We had the Refuge Filet, the New York Strip, the Wood-fired Chicken, and the pork chop. The Refuge Filet was the highlight--the jalapeno, bacon and bleu cheese really complement the steak flavor. The steak was impeccably tender and done just right. The New York Strip was also very good. I am not a fan of this cut--when I cook it at home it's always tough. But their version is reasonably tender and has great flavor from the tallow butter they put on it. The steaks came with mashed potatoes that were pretty bland and ordinary. The wood-fired chicken was tender and had good flavor. It is marinated in lemon but we couldn't really taste it except in the bed of risotto. The risotto was quite good, nice and creamy. The pork chop was complicated. It had a tender uniform texture all the way through and nice flavor. I couldn't find any grain in it, almost like it was a fine grind. The sauce was ok, a bit one-note sweet for me. Different from and perhaps better than Perry's chop, but I think I would try something else next time. These dishes came with Apple-Bacon Brussels Sprouts and roasted carrots. The brussels sprouts were a disappointment. Might have known since it's misspelled on the menu. The brussels sprouts were barely cooked and quite tough, with too much of the bottom stem left on, adding to the bitterness. The roast carrots were fine. Since we had a birthday in the party we were treated to a special dessert. Birthday dessert at The Refuge has two major advantages--a nice tableside presentation of bread pudding flambe, and no annoying birthday song. Yay! Definitely tell them it's your birthday. The dessert is a banana bread pudding topped with ice cream. Rather uniform texture but good flavor and excellent with the ice cream. The ambiance is appropriately dark and sumptuous for a fancy steakhouse. The bathrooms are upscale, with available cloth towels. Service was fine but at a pretty relaxed pace, I definitely felt ready for the next course before it came. But we at times requested things from waiters other than the one waiting our table, and they responded immediately--good teamwork. This is not a bargain place, but we got out for under $100 apiece which I actually think is pretty good for an end-to-end meal. If you go to a steakhouse for steaks, you will do well at The Refuge.

But the star was the Parrillada Regia plate. This plate comes on a sizzling fajita skillet with beef, shrimp, sausage and a pork chop as proteins, grilled onions and peppers, and rice, beans, tortillas, avocado and pico de gallo on the side. The beef was good, the chicken fine but slightly on the dry side, the sausage had lots of flavor, and the shrimp was well cooked. But I recommend this plate for the pork chop. It's a thin chop but it was cooked just right, done but nice and tender. There's a very narrow window to get chops right, and most places miss it, but this one was great. The portions of the proteins are about right for one taco, I would call it a sample plate. But it's under $20 so I think it is a great value as well as a good dish. Am getting that again. We may have failed to appreciate the canoa. It's a fried plantain topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. My wife thought it was too sweet, and I thought it wasn't sweet enough. Your mileage will obviously vary. The place has been fully decorated since my last review and is quite attractive inside. The bathrooms were clean and ready. Service was good. Big easy to read menu, self serve chips and salsa. There are at least 5 sauce choices, and again, taste them first before you slather it on anything. Definitely recommend, oh and this place looks like it's open 24 hours, which is probably hopping at midnight . Give them a try!

The is a great Tex-Mex restaurant!…read more First of all, they serve Puffy tacos, in the San Antonio style. Few restaurants can prepare these the proper way. There is great QC, AND management, here. Julio's wife, Elena, stopped by the table and checked in the food. She also told us of a wrestling event that was coming up on May 1. She was SO pleasant.
