Quick line, lots of baked goods. The best stuff sells out fast so get there early. Central AC in summer which was really nice in the heatwave while we visited. I ordered their Superior latte again but the balance of flavors were unfortunately not there. I would recommend adding half a tablespoon to a tablespoon more of the syrup. My husband and I stopped Sunday at the Superior location. We purchased a chocolate croissant and a chocolate scone. Upon arriving home and excited to try them we were disappointed. The scone was raisin, not chocolate and very stale. It went in the garbage. We move on to the croissant, which at best had a tablespoons worth of chocolate. Oh ok, WOW!!! There are *all* Sourdoughs here & all the sourdoughs are truly, actually, not hyperbolically, the BEST! Oh the sourdough almond croissant is scrumptious & we ate it too fast to take a photo. Into the Cranberry-Wild Rice loaf we took home & I took a photo before it's gone. Isn't it a beauty? Their original loaf is fantastic & we've now had their Onion-Rosemary Loaf twice & it was also a huge hit. They are batting 1000 on bread (not the coffee). The coffee is not too bad but coffee is not their forte, breads are. To note: their same day fresh sourdough (cold fermented & cold rise, even) bread can stay fresh on the counter for two & a half days & be delicious (toasted or baked)! I've never had bread remain this truly fresh for so long off a bakery shelf, same day or not. They only sell their products in Duluth & Cloquet & I wish they could remain this good & distribute around the world but that is not how best bread works because smaller batches have the reputation of being tastier, after-all, & this proves that reputation to stand, again. Duluth has some great baked goods, but DBB earns it's name as Duluth's Best Bread. Their pastries are on par with ones that I've had in Europe: flaky, buttery, and perfectly proofed. You can tell they're using great ingredients. The permanent menu is always winning, and the seasonal offerings haven't disappointed me yet. I just tried the pumpkin croissant instead of my usual chocolate and had no regrets, it was amazing! Everyone is always so nice, and even when there's a line, it tends to move pretty quickly. I also love the atmosphere they've built, especially in the summer when they're able to open the garage doors. Even in the winter, though, it's a perfect cozy spot for breakfast and coffee. I was in Paris a few months ago and I honestly did not have a better croissant there. I loved Duluth's Best Bread's more. And that's just the food. The owners are even better! We had a last minute loss of a brunch location the day after my daughter's wedding. We had two days of back and forth, not knowing where we could go. I shared this with one of the amazing people at Duluth's Best Bread and they offered to let me use some of their public space. The kindness was so amazing! Quite literally moments after the ceremony on Saturday I was being reassured that they would be there for us and help us out. They were so wonderful and helpful! What generous humans! The wedding venue, Brule River Barn, was an hour away and they generously offered to let us stay a little later so we didn't take Duluth's Best Bread up on their wonderful offer but knowing they jumped to help us at the last minute, it makes me happy to know there are businesses and people still kind and generous in this world! read more

Stopped at the one on 27th Ave west for pain au chocolate. Bought three of them and one almond croissant. Unfortunately, two of the chocolate ones tasted like they were at least days old. I have never had that happen before. This was very disappointing because it's not like you're going to drive back there to exchange, complain, replace. I wanted to pick up something easy to eat for the drive up the scenic North Shore. I didn't know what to expect when pulling up to Duluth's Best Bread but had read good things. They had a walkup window so we were able to bring our dog up instead of leaving her in the car. They had a great selection of items on their menu so it was hard to choose. I decided to try a peach poptart, my wife chose a chocolate almond croissant, and we split four different macarons. They also offered us a homemade dog treat for the pup which was a nice touch. The items we got were delicious. I think the croissant & poptart would've tasted even better warmed up! I'd love to try their bread which evidently sells out quickly. I sort of happened onto this place. I drove by it. However, before going to Duluth's Best Bread in the morning, I asked a local about it. This person said that 'it's really good but they don't have their act as together as they should because they might have run out of some things.' That's because their baked goods are so popular. That's what I experienced at Duluth's Best Bread somewhere in the late morning, or I would gladly have given them 5 stars. Their baked goods are incredibly tasty, the prices are fair, and the employee at the counter was very nice - not "Minnesota nice," but genuinely nice. Let me get to the baked goods. I wanted the rosemary loaf but they had just run out and I got the more basic country loaf, which they had. I was concerned that it would be a wheat type bread with nuts and seeds that granolaheads would tend to consume. It wasn't. The woman at the window explained that their breads are sourdough themed. That was good to hear, and true to form for Duluth which, completely unlike the Twin Cities, has precipitous San Francisco-like streets descending from its steep hillsides to the lake. I also wanted a chocolate and almond croissant. They had run out of those, too, so I got an almond croissant. Nonetheless, it was outstanding. There was a line. The locals know a good thing. People in line were friendly and, with some visitors in the batch, the locals were helping with what to order from the window and what to see while in the area. That was cool. I had to laugh at their self regarding name, which instantly reminded me of Seattle's Best Coffee. That Seattle's Best Coffee is Seattle's best coffee is debatable. However, Duluth's Best Bread is most likely Duluth's best bread and, for that matter, they have some of the best baked goods I've tasted anywhere. read more

This summer I helped pilot a new French crepe truck for my innovative friend, and talented chef, Linda Nervick. The crepe truck is located behind the Duluth Depot train museum and serves locals, tourists and train passengers. The crepes were a smash hit and we worked at break neck speeds to delight our guests when lines formed at our humble window. Along with creating sweet and savory crepes for our patrons, we sold French style macrons, big fat German pretzels, Jambons (ham & cheese croissants), and butter croissants from the new bakery located just down the street in Duluth's Historic Arts & Entertainment District fondly called "HART." Linda, who own the crepe truck concept, got her courage and inspiration from collaboration with Duluth's Best Bread. Both venues start with pure, unbridled passion for their creations. Their missions are to create unique food culture. I spent the summer at Linda's crepe griddle / front counter -- and fell in love with making our customers smile. Linda and I, both from sales and marketing backgrounds, joked about how "UN" glamorous the food truck business is!! Yet, we had the time of our lives serving our growing base of crepe and Duluth's Best Bread lovers. After the crepe truck shut down for the summer, I found myself at the front counters of the Lincoln Park and HART District Duluth's Best Bread. Both of these businesses care about the experience they create for every customer that lines up at their counter!!! I now proudly work at the Bread Store because everyone from the owners, to the bakers, to my front of house peers, to our customers just love the amazing products. I'm giving thanks this Thanksgiving day for my dear friend Linda Nervick who helped me find pure joy offering great crepes, breads, pastries to our growing Duluth fan base! We made the trip north to Duluth to spend the day fishing and to check out some of the best that Duluth has to offer. Duluth's Best Bread is definitely on that list. Prior to our trip I was doing my Yelpsearch. We had to stop at Duluth's Best Bread. Initially our plan was to pick up some bread and pop tarts. As it turns out we were able to secure some bread before our trip and didn't look at any bread here. Which looking back was a minor mistake because we can always use another loaf of bread around our house. A mistake we certainly won't repeat next time we are in town. Anyhow we found a parking spot right in front and went inside. When you walk in you feel like you are standing in their kitchen. Its open and you can see the baked goods. Knowing we were going to be making several stops this day we selected a couple of their homemade pop tarts and then an almond croissant. The pop tart will make you wonder why you would ever eat pop tarts from a box. Flaky with fresh fruit filling. Very good! The shocker to us was how amazing their almond croissant was. This was truly amazing. It is like no other croissant that we have ever had and we don't even want to try any other croissants after eating this one. Lightly crispy on the outside yet lite and fluffy and buttery on the inside. This was so good, we wanted to come back here again before we left town. Reading some of the reviews, sounds like their pain au chocolat is also getting rave reviews. We made note of this place and consider this a must stop next time we are in town. Got here about 9:00, loaded up with a caramel roll, pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant), and 2 pop-tarts: wild berry and strawberry. Then we went back to our hotel, where we entered the insanely busy breakfast room only to grab coffee and juice to enjoy w our baked goodies in the comfort of our room. So worth it! Duluth's Best Bread is a good name for this business even if we didn't actually try any of their loaves. The caramel roll was super fresh and delicious. The pain au chocolate was soft and buttery but could have used a touch more chocolate inside. We reserved a loaf of cardamom bread for pickup on Christmas Eve. This was to replace the cardamom loaf traditionally made every year by our Swedish grandmother, who is turning 87 on Christmas Eve and is not up to making it herself. When we arrived to pick it up, we were told it had been sold. I'm sure the bread is wonderful but please be clear with customers about what is required to reserve a loaf in advance. If we had known our order could not be fulfilled, we would have gone elsewhere. By the time we learned there was no bread available, it was too late and we are without a staple of our Christmas Eve tradition and a birthday gift to our grandmother. read more

The ones from the store by my house taste leagues better for $3. The ham was salty, and having eaten half, I still haven't found the cheese. If you have read any of my other reviews you may notice I am fan of croissants. This place does not disappoint in the butter regard. A fullness of flavor and appropriate texture are the marks of a work well done. Their chocolate almond variety is a four star. A little more dense with the filings being two slabs side by side vs. Being intermixed. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way it is done elsewhere but it could better. Be aware, there is no place to eat here. It is take out only. Not a problem though since they do the important parts so well. I will return here mostly for their butter croissants. I've sampled pain au chocolat across the country and in France and Quebec. This is one of the best ever. Multilayer flakiness, heavy butter and salt presence, with two ribbons of smoky, bittersweet dark chocolate. It's borderline savory, very rich and satisfying.
