AC died in the middle of the night. They came out the next morning and said my unit was too old…read morerepair (just over 20 years old), while ripping out something from the power box and seemingly breaking a component in there. They said they could try to do a repair for about $1.3k but that they couldn't guarantee the repair would be effective because of the condenser. They then tried to sell me on their highest end heat-pump for about $24k, which was too much for our needs, since our furnace was also functional. We ended up choosing a basic AC replacement for around $9k. They were able to install the new unit two days later. However, on the day of the install, they saw some surface level rust on the furnace heat exchanger and tried to get me to replace it for an additional $4k. When I said no, they backed off and recommended a CO alarm (which we already have). It felt like I was being heavily taken advantage of because I was in a dire situation. The installation went fine, but my experience of being pressured and hard sold to during the process made it feel like I was being milked for every penny they could get out of me. Take this as a precaution to check your HVAC AC/furnace/heat pump regularly, and get multiple quotes before deciding on work. If you go with this company, they will seemingly do an effective job, but they will try their best to get as much money out of you as possible.

A very disappointing experience…read more A few years ago we had ProTemp install two HVAC systems. We were quite pleased at that time -- but no longer. We had scheduled ProTemp to clean and inspect our two furnaces in preparation for cold weather. They notified us the night before they were scheduled to come that they needed to reschedule. We rescheduled. ProTemp failed to arrive within the scheduling window. They did not communicate at all that they were running late. I contacted them and we again rescheduled. The technician arrived today to do a cleaning and inspection. Afterwards I discovered that he did not take out the air filters to inspect them. Upon talking with ProTemp, I was informed by them that they do not inspect air filters at all and that such activity is the sole responsibility of the homeowner. They also said they only inspect the burners and heating elements. Perhaps I should have asked specifically what precisely would be done. Further, the technician dragged blown-in insulation and debris out of the attic and onto my carpeting when cleaning that furnace. He never covered the carpeting to mitigate the possibility of soiling the carpet. I, therefore, was left to clean up the carpet. I brought this to the attention of ProTemp. Their response was to inform me that the technician could not be held responsible for dragging material out of the attic and onto unprotected carpeting. I will no longer use ProTemp of Illinois, and, based solely on my experience, I would not recommend them to others.

I began shopping around for quotes, and was ignored or - in one case - told they wouldn't work on it "but good luck". We have an older manufactured home that we're trying to keep alive just long enough to build our forever home, but that still requires the occasional repair and all we seem to run into are people who tell us it cannot be done. Our house is too old. Our equipment is too old. Nothing can be repaired. Sometimes we can't even get people to show up and replace them. Then I met Alex. We discussed multiple options, and we decided to upgrade to a tankless given that the old water heater had apparently been leaking - a fact that the other plumber had apparently completely missed. Not only that, he was able to diagnose an issue with our furnace that will allow us to give it a much needed repair for far, far less than we were quoted. (Originally we were told we needed a full replacement as parts couldn't be ordered for it. He immediately found the part and it's cheap and easy to replace!) Alex treated us like people, listened to us, helped however he could, and even when parts didn't fit he worked tirelessly to get replacements immediately. He was always customer conscious. He's not only earned loyal customers for life, but we already have other jobs lined up for him. Honestly, I'm just grateful there are still people out there operating with this level of integrity.

For the next several weeks, numerous issues came up including a gas leak with an overwhelming smell. I requested several times for this to be checked out. He came out and every time Alex said everything is fine. I recorded a video with a soapy solution and found a major leak. I called him on a Sunday (I know most don't work on the weekends) and told him the smell is overpowering. Alex came back out at the beginning of the week, and finally agreed with me there was a problem. He fixed it and apologized. "THANK GOD, the house didn't blow up...."! I feel Alex and his team are still under experienced in the full process....because after multiple attempts to figure out a simplified HVAC temperature swing...I don't really see the benefit in the system that was installed. He wanted to charge another $2,000+ to redirect the output gases attached to the back of my home..."simply said you can't have an outdoor firepit on the patio"...with fumes of gas blowing on the patio!! Now just 13 months later the on demand Greentherm T9900 SE 199 by Bosch tankless water heater...actually this next comment has been ongoing...turn on the cold tap and hot water comes out for about 90 seconds... Taking a shower...you have to wait about 120 seconds to get hot or even warm water......................... I wish I would have looked harder than just a simple referral. So, $19K later........we don't even want to have him to come in our home again............tough lesson to learn, I guess!

So yes, had I gone with that company, it would have cost me $2300. Armed with this information, I posted pictures and exactly what the "diagnosis" said and asked for emailed quotes...to be clear I said EMAIL only. I then got no less than 10 phone calls saying "please give us a call so we can talk about your situation. Some called more than once. Lakeland Heating and Cooling (Jason) was nothing like that... $1270 flat rate to replace the water heater. Yes, thats how he replied in his email.. as I requested. He came in.. with the water heater... replaced it... and went on his way. Other companies, that followed directions, also came in higher than $2000. I am EXTREMELY satisfied with Jason and Lakeland!
