I rate Duke Energy three stars. It's OK. We've been Duke Energy customers in Chapel Hill since June 2020, so for about four years now. I also have a residence in Atlanta and have been a Georgia Power customer there since 2001, at two different Atlanta homes. My three-star rating for Duke Energy is based on comparisons of my experiences between Duke Energy and Georgia Power. It comes down to two main things: 1. I've experienced way more power outages with Duke Energy than with Georgia Power. It's not even close. There have been more outages in four years with Duke Energy than in 23 years with Georgia Power. I know there are many factors that can make some homes more susceptible to outages than others. The places I've lived in Atlanta are more urban and dense than where we live in Chapel Hill, but Chapel Hill isn't in the boonies either. In Chapel Hill, we live close to I-40, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and office parks. Also, the terrain and weather in Chapel Hill and Atlanta are similar. Therefore, it comes down to Duke Energy's grid simply being not as reliable as Georgia Power's. Duke Energy also has a lot of random power blips, which is annoying. 2. When there's a power outage, Duke Energy's mean time to repair is poor. I've experienced multiple outages where it took several hours per outage for power to be restored. On August 15-16, 2023, it took about 24 hours for power to be restored. I lost over a full workday because of it. Because I've experienced so many outages over the last four years, I've grown accustomed to the company's outage alerts, their online outage map, and I even follow Duke Energy employee Jeff Brooks on X (Twitter) for outage information: https://x.com/DE_JeffB Again, in 23 years with Georgia Power at two different homes, I can't recall experiencing any sort of extended outage. If there even is an outage, most of the time, it's just a blip. And I haven't gotten familiar with any of Georgia Power's outage alerts or tools -- because I haven't had to. As a retail customer, Duke Energy has had slightly lower electricity bills than Georgia Power. However, the difference is on the order of magnitude of about 1¢/kWh (not significant). Also, Duke Energy sent us a "free" box of 16 energy-efficient LED light bulbs (9W soft white, 60W equivalent) for being new subscribers back in 2020. That was nice. After four years, I've used seven of the 16 bulbs. We live near the Chapel Hill-Durham border, which is also near the Orange County-Durham County border. These two Triangle cities and counties, along with other Triangle cities and counties (e.g., Raleigh, Wake County, Chatham County) are in Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress overlapped territories. Duke Energy Carolinas is the old Duke Power that I grew up knowing in Guilford County. Duke Energy Progress is the old Progress Energy, which was the combination of the old Carolina Power & Light (headquartered in Raleigh) and Florida Power Corporation. I am a residential customer of Duke Energy in Durham, NC. I am writing about my experience with Duke Energy and the Cape Fear,Air-Electric-Plumbing Co. in Raleigh, NC. that was recommended on the Duke Energy list of contractors. I am a widow and was overcharged for a Trane HVAC system that cost $28,000.00. My husband died August 4th, 2024. I was still grieving over the death of my husband and told the Cape Fear contractor of Raleigh. My husband always took care of making sure our home ran efficiently and told me we needed to replace our old HVAC, just before he died. I regret not getting wise counsel from others. In Oct. 2024 the second invoice with dates 10/01/2024 for $14,000.00 and 10/11/2024 for $14,000.00 more, but the items showed $0.00 instead of the cost of each individual item itemized. Cape Fear, Air-Electric-Plumbing in Raleigh, NC refused to send me an itemized bill. The HVAC Trane was put under my house and does not heat or cool the back of my home with the same temperature as the front of the home. I get very cold in my bedroom in the winter and too hot in the summer, I am old. I called the customer service of Duke Energy, refused to come out and take responsibility for recommending Cape Fear, Air-Electric-Plumbing Raleigh, NC. 9400-7 Ransdell Rd. Raleigh, North Carolina. After 7+ hours of no electricity, Duke Energy finally admitted to their mistake and restored my power. They kept saying there was nothing wrong and refused to send anyone out to fix the problems. They constantly blamed it on my apartment complex, and told me to contact them to get it fixed. The maintenance people did everything in their power to fix the issue, but still no power. After arguing and fighting with Duke Energy on the phone for hours, they finally sent someone out to fix the issue. And sure enough... IT WAS THEIR FAULT!!!! Absolute WORST customer service I have ever received in my life. Shame on you Duke Energy. When a paying customer says they have no power, do your damn jobs and fix the problem! It's Mother's Day, 70 degrees, cloudy, no wind. Power is out. Estimated to be back on in two hours. Why in 2019 a company can't keep the lights on in perfect conditions is beyond me. If there were an alternative I'd switch right now. If I weren't in a townhome I'd have solar panels and never pay these guys a dime. And don't get me started on the coal ash leakages, where they just let stuff ruin the environment, pay a few fines and then pass the costs on to us. God forbid some executive should be held accountable for his decisions. Duke energy (now "Dominion" energy) is a terrible company and should be dissolved. Duke Energy applied my current payments from a previously closed account and then sent me past due and shutoff notices for my current locations. Then after 3 calls when they realized and admitted their complaint, they said they would send a refund for the overpayment of $77. This was October....it is now December 9th....and the story changes every time but now 78 days I don't have my refund check. I have called 8 (EIGHT) times now and they are telling me it was printed on Nov. 18th but no record of sending it. This is absolutely ridiculous. To post payments to a closed account, then threaten to cut off my power for non-payment even though the payments were sent electronically to them and they coded them to a closed account and continued to collect money and let it sit there. THEN, to continue to tell me to wait (78 days) for a check to be sent is inexcusable. They have no issue with getting my bills to me..but I want action. Just need to vent. Duke Energy had an issue with automatic payments in September. Seems they still don't have things fixed. My account was over-drafted by $100 in October even though I am on the equal payment plan. They don't have the technology to return the money to my account. Sending a check. Will take about a week to get. You'd think with the technology we have these days that they'd be able to reverse the charge!! read more

My bill came through last month higher than it's ever been. After seeing a news report on WRAL that Duke was over charging customers I called to have my meter reread. The first person I talked to said she set it up and I waited a week with no response. When I called back they told me it was never set up. The second person set up the appointment and the meter was reread. They claimed no changes were made and couldn't tell me anything other than I was using more energy in a month when the air wasn't kicking on as much as it would in the summer. When I called again to try and get more of an explanation I was judge for not turning my heater on sooner and the rep wanted to talk about how I could have gotten my bill lower on a month 7 months ago instead of the month I was inquiring about. She told me the bill wasn't that high and she has paid more for her bills and she works for the company. She tried to blame it on any and everything but Duke and couldn't give me any other explanation other than you used more energy. My bill has never been this high and the next projected bill lower so there is no logical explanation why this one bill was so completely different. I have been trying to get duke to come to my property to set up electricity for two days now. My wife, daughter and I have been in our home for 2 days without power. Duke claims someone is coming out but it is 10:45pm on the second night and still no one. I have called over a dozen times and I get the same response, "there's no way to find out what time they will be at your property, you are on our list for new service so someone will be out there today." Bullshit! Everyone on the phone is nice and sympathetic but come on... you are a energy company that takes two days to turn on someone's power? If there was another energy company I could go to, I would... but sadly... there is no other company around our area. I would give ZERO stars if I could. read more

These people fried my refrigerator and refused to pay the $300 repair bill. They were replacing a pole at my street. Told my wife they would be killing the power for a few hours. The fridge was working fine that morning--we know because we were opening and using it and it's lights and control panel were fine. They finished the work, turned our power back on, and the motherboard in the fridge was damaged. My wife noticed the fridge control panel going haywire the very minute they threw the switch. So, a lovely situation. We lived in Durham NC from 2006 to 2008. We bought a house there right before the housing bust began, and couldn't sell it when we moved to Atlanta in 2008. We kept it as a rental for years. As the property requires utilities between renters, we had a "revert to owner" agreement with all the utilities including Duke Energy . Fast forward to 2017 when after several renters, we managed to sell the property. As part of the sale (as with any sale) we switched off the utilities and other services. We took our settlement check, wished the new home owners best of luck, and went on our merry way. Last week, we get a bill from Duke Energy for service change to new owner. Figured it was some kind of glitch, and since we were on vacation we put it off until a later date. Today, we get another one for the same thing! Apparently although the account was correctly moved to the new homeowner in 2017, the "revert to owner" portion of our now-closed account was never properly cancelled. Duke Energy's stance on all of this? "Well you never confirmed the cancellation of 'revert to owner' (although the account itself was supposedly cancelled), so Duke Energy is not going to do the logical thing, and push that billing to the current owner who is apparently now renting the house again. In fact Duke Energy is going to do nothing, and expects us to pay the bill now. Also, apparently as a former customer with a valid issue with them, the only person that has any authority to do something is the call center supervisor on duty at 6:45 PM on a Friday night. At this point I'd rather take a hit on my credit than give Duke Energy a penny of my money for an obvious oversight. read more

It is named the 7th largest utility company in the US. They offer a good package to join their business when you can get a interview and if its kept. I waited in a remote meeting with them for over 30 minutes (scheduled for 10:15am), no one came to talk to me, no one had anyone call to tell me they weren't coming to the meeting and that we'd re-schedule, I got no apologies from anyone or anything. I was left to feel worthless! They have rewards for "Leadership and Accountability" can you believe that?? I thought they stood behind what they portray to the public and other companies that reward their productivity and set their own standards by, but they apparently don't! They know they are destined to get your service and money so why care what they do to anyone? Or how they disregard people because they feel they can. Find other places to help with your utility problems, they may have to go through Duke for stuff but you may pay less and receive better services. And if you work for them, I don't get the feel they treat their employees any better than anyone else. But yet they are continuously winning recognition and who is doing the recognizing at what ----? read more

Duke Energy sent my one month unpaid bill (December 2014) to collections after I challenged the amount ($362.69)before investigating if there was a problem During the month of December 2014 I took over the utilities of a rental property in while it was empty during the month. The only electricity on were the front and back porch lights and refrigerator. No one lived in the house during this month. The HVAC was off. For some reason the bill was $362.69. I called Duke Energy and explained something must be wrong. They said that was what the meter read and would look into it. Instead, they sent the bill to a collections agency w/o any investigation or even re-issuing the bill. At the same time they put this bill on my current bill. So, they are officially collecting twice on the same bill. Others in our neighborhood are also reporting extremely high utility bills for no explainable reason. read more

I paid $64 in for the whole month of July. My August bill was only for 14 days because I moved. My bill for 14 days was $54!!! I was not even living there those 14 days! The only thing drawing power was the AC and I had that set at 75 and in July it was set at 70. I called customer service and they said "Your meter read says you owe us that amount so pay it". Duke Energy has a monopoly on the area, they don't care about their customers. I called them three times and spoke to someone different each time. Every time they tried putting the blame on me. Duke Energy did a 'home energy audit' in my sister's house last month. She was skeptical about it because it was free and didn't really make sense that they just wanted to 'reduce overall user electricity demand' like they stated. The team came in, replaced all light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, replace the HVAC filter and provided 6 months of new filters, installed insulation around the doors, cleaned the fridge coils, and installed low flow faucet/shower devices. They were very respectful of her home, professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. They answered all of our questions and even gave her some much needed advice about major appliance, furnace, A/C, and water heater replacement needs. I actually like Duke Energy much more after this experience. read more

I was told by a representative from Duke Energy that I would not be charge for a connection fee when the date on my disconnection that was scheduled was changed. I got my bill and was charged $25 for a reconnection fee. When I called in and spoke to someone I was told that the supervisor would review it. She came back to say that it was a charge for it and they would not remove the charge. I asked them to pull the "recording for quality assurance" phone call to hear the representative tell me that there would be NO CHARGE and she said the supervisor saw no need in pulling the tape. They don't give you truthful answers anyway... just a waste of your time. When there is no power in your home, you can BE SURE that Duke Energy will take their ever loving time and make sure to give you the worse experience/service and restore your power at the very latest they can!!!' Tried paying my energy bill online as I normal do but Duke Energy's website has been down for days. Called and spoke to customer service representative Brittany who said I would be charged a fee if I tried to pay my bill through going to a payment center or calling by phone even though it is their error. They refused to wave this fee and she refused to let me speak with her supervisor, whose name she said was Alicia. Terrible service and customer service all around from this energy company. read more
