Their 24 hr dispatcher immediately answered and they had an electrician on site within two hours on a Saturday evening. Erik, helped get my generator running and hooked up, and an hour after that I had an estimate and repair plan in hand. On Sunday and Monday Summer was in frequent contact with updates and by Monday afternoon the repair was complete and good as new! The job came in under the projected time and under budget, so they reduced the cost to the real hours worked. We moved to North Carolina from the west coast which means you don't have a network of plumbers and electricians, and mechanics and such... It is such a vulnerable situation. My daughter bought a home and it need some electrical work done to fix a few minor things and to hardwire some flood lights, patio lights and other projects. After a first attempt with a company that charged a service fee ($129) and sent 3 men that did absolutely NOTHING that we needed...I had the lucky fortune of finding Volt Doctors. The owner is a very nice and hard-working local man businessman that knows his stuff. They were able to work on many items on my list and I am excited they will be coming back to give the house a complete check for older sockets and some loose plugs. (Clearly I don't know the correct terms) - But I DO know what it feels like to have someone NOT take advantage of me. After posting a few days ago about a negative experience I had in 2022, the general manager (Greg Shaw) and owner (Andy Clark) each reached out and apologized, expressing genuine concern. Andy and Greg assured me that the employee who'd performed the work I was unhappy with had been terminated months earlier due to complaints similar to mine, and that had they known what they did now, they'd never have hired him in the first place. Andy asked if he, Greg, and their senior electrician (Ashley) could come out to inspect the outlets the employee had serviced, and fix anything that I was unhappy with at no cost. I took them up on the offer and they came out immediately. Ashley and Andy carefully inspected every single one of our outlets to ensure the wiring was optimally connected, updated those that had been missed (the original job included baby-proofing), fixed the connections between some switches and outlets that were suboptimal, and made sure we had GFIs everywhere we needed them. All three men were professional, respectful, and personable. They walked me through everything they had done and thoughtfully answered all of my questions (I had a lot). Andy reimbursed me for the work I'd had done to replace a kitchen outlet that had failed a few days prior, and promised to cover upkeep of the outlets for the duration of time we lived in the house, free of charge. I finally feel confident in the integrity of our outlet wiring and am grateful for the peace of mind I now have. Volt Doctors rescued me from a potentially catastrophic house fire after my electric panel caught on fire. I called several electricians who told me it was too big a job for them or they were busy elsewhere. But one person (Eddie Mathison, who could not come to the site himself) called Andy Clark from Volt Doctors and he was here in short order. The fire was a serious meltdown of older equipment, so Andy recommended replacing the panel with copper fittings vs aluminum (which is so soft it melts easily). In all, he replaced the electric panel, the generator panel, hot tub cutoff plus a new surge protector to prevent this from happening again (you never think a fire will happen to you -- until it does). While he was there, he found a few errors in previous work and fixed them too. I am highly impressed with Volt Doctors' work and commitment to excellence. Are they cheap? Nope. Are they worth it? Yes. After all, do you really want someone doing low-ball electrical work when it is such a vital part of your day-to-day living? Not me. Bottom line: Volt Doctors responded quickly when others had no availability until 1-2 weeks out, and the electrical issue was resolved fast with great results. The Deets: I had most (all but one) electrical outlets in my bedroom as well as the main light switch in there also go out with have no power to them recently. Calling around to get an electrician to look at the issue and resolve it, I found that most the places I called could send someone out in approximately 1-2 weeks. In looking around Yelp, I found Volt Doctors to call and found that they had availability the very next morning...awesome! I figured that I would probably be paying for that convenience, as I was quoted a flat $179 diagnosis/estimate flat charge before any work is done. I am good with that, as I do want the issue resolved sooner than later. The next morning, the electrician was there promptly right as agreed, at the very beginning of the four hour window. He quickly diagnosed the issue and had it fixed just as fast after that. He was thorough and personable, and got the electrical issue taken care of with good results. The total on the invoice was actually very acceptable to me for not only quick response service as well as the resolution implemented. Kenny came and installed our two ceiling fans this afternoon, and he did a great job. We are waiting on the kitchen lights because we aren't sure it's worth the hassle for more light. I agreed to a diagnostic fee (a trip fee) of $199, which was reduced to $179. What was wrong was that our outside lights did not work any more; it took the technician 20 minutes to diagnose that the outside plug was no longer working and fix it; the charge for fixing it was $259; total of $438; with tax $470!! And then the outdoor lights still were not fixed; the technician told me that the transformer was blown out too and we would need to get a new one. He said he had not touched the transformer and only looked at it when I asked why the lights were still not working. read more

We recently hired Volt Doctors for the first time to replace six exterior wall lights. We were over-charged and experienced issues with the quality of the installation. I reached out to discuss this and the office representative who answered the call was intractable. Some time passed and I left a one-star Yelp review to warn other potential customers. I believed it was the end of the saga and began searching for a new electrician. Within just a few hours of posting, I received a call from Andy, who owns Volt Doctors. He was clearly very frustrated about what we experienced and immediately refunded the excess charges. I am so glad we called Volt Doctors. At the WORST possible moment, we had some switches in our breaker die. That meant not only no power to our guest quarters, but worse- no AC during a hot stretch. It also meant no power in our shop. Volt Doctors answered our call -no leaving a voicemail or anything- and got out to our house in less than 3hrs. Our technician was excellent; he explained what was wrong, how to fix it, and what work we'd need in the future. He was professional and really helpful. He even fixed an unrelated issue we've been waiting on another vendor to fix for three weeks that we'd pretty much given up on. We relocated within Durham a few months ago and needed an electrician to install some new ceiling lights/fans, and install a new outdoor outlet. One of my neighbors said he used "Durham Electric" and when I Googled that, Volt Doctors came up. They came to do an assessment (I think it cost $54 or so, which will apply to the balance if you hire them) and we got a quote emailed to us within hours. It was very quick. We decided to proceed with them, paid half of the full amount, and scheduled them to come out a few days later. They were prompt, professional, and did the job mostly (we'll get to that in a minute). There was only one worker for most of the day, and a supervisor who popped in and out. Talking to the worker, we found out he was supposed to have an assistant but he called in sick. We paid the balance by credit card and thought we were done. The next day, we noticed the switch we thought was supposed to control the living room fan wasn't working (it was part of the contract). I called and scheduled them to come back within a certain window after my doctor's appointment. Unfortunately, they showed up way early when I was away and my wife was leaving for work. They did come back the next day to finish the work. I recommend this company, but will deduct one star for the unfinished work and showing up at an inconvenient time for us. They did fix the fan switch, though, and we are happy with the service. read more

So, an update from my first review. There was a scheduling and phone issue when the technician got a flat tire. At first this was a frustrating miscommunication because I didn't know what happened. However, I was really impressed that the company President got back to me within an hour and apologized. He checked the call logs and phone conversation (also impressed they record and review their phone calls), apologized for the incident and set up with free service to set it right despite my protests that it wasn't necessary. It's obvious he really cares about his customers and his business, and wants everyone to have a good experience. I can see why he has all of the positive reviews, because he never mentioned my negative one or asked me to change it. Things happen with any company, but what set the good ones apart is that they care about the customer experience and want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I've had bad luck with electricians in the past, and am happy to find a company that is involved top down. As he said on the phone, he is a small town guy who wants to be sure his company doesn't lose that small-town customer attention. I highly recommend the service, and will be using Volt Doctors in the future for my home and rental properties. read more

Not only was it great, neat work but they cleaned up and labeled both circuit panel and the receptacle. The funny thing is I've never used Volt Doctors. But I still love them and here's why: I had a problem with my electrical system, and Mrs. V forbids me from doing plumbing or electrical stuff (see prev review in which she doesn't want a house fire or some nonsense :) ), so I called about 5 different electricians to come out and find out what was up. 4 of them were happy to set up an appointment with a minimal $40 service charge. EXCEPT Volt Doctors: the pleasant lady who called back immediately started with: "before we come out have you tried this....? Because it sounds like a simple fix that you won't need to pay us for". I tried her advice and Lo and Behold: power restored. If I have electrical needs in the future, I will DEFINITELY use Volt Doctors, based on both personal experience and other Yelpers. read more

Found this company on Yelp. To be honest, I was a little bit skeptical initially of the 42 5-star rating. Sometimes things too good to be true generally are. However, the Volt doctors delivered as advertised. JP was the technician who was dispatched to me for diagnosis of a lighting fixture problem. He was very patient and enthusiastic in problem solving and pinpointing the culprit. He diagnosed the issue in no time. In addition he offered solutions for repair. JP also graciously offered to take a look at a smoking alarm issue I've been having without hesitation. Not the cheapest but you DO get what you pay for. I had a pretty simple electrical job and after a terrible experience with a competing electrical company I listened to the yelp reviews and called Volt Doctors. JP came over and really listened. He checked out the work the previous company did and took a look at my current job (wiring for a new HVAC). He grasped the project immediately and then just STAYED and knocked it out! I was blown away. There's fast service and then there's JP. So professional! Two specific call-outs. 1. JP had worked with ductless mini-split HVAC's before. This isn't very common and I really appreciated his expertise and knowledge of the electrical building codes for such units. 2. When he didn't know something he called a colleague to ask! This seems like a simple thing but I've had a bunch of contractors in my house and there's really something to be said for the humility found in JP. So many contractors have had all this pride and machismo which resulted in many a failed inspection. Not this time! Volt Doctors was not the cheapest option. For sure. One night the light fixtures, ceiling fans, and most of the outlets stopped working in both our guest bedrooms and the guest bath for no apparent reason. The overhead light fixture had been flickering a bit in one of the guest bedrooms for a few days before this, but we had assumed this was just a bulb that needed to be replaced soon. I spent hours the next day trying to diagnose the problem. I first checked the circuit breaker, but nothing was tripped. I then moved onto looking for a tripped GFCI, but none of the GFCI outlets I knew of were tripped either. I then went through the entire house room-by-room checking every outlet for a hidden GFCI. I even crawled through the attic and the crawl space under the house, but there was no hidden GFCI. By now, I knew the problem was limited to one circuit, and that it was not a circuit with a GFCI. Beyond that, I could not for the life of me figure out where the problem was on the circuit or what that problem was. I finally decided I needed a pro to figure this out and came looking on Yelp. Volt Doctors responded within 30min, faster than anyone else. Their flat fee of $179 just for a diagnosis seemed high, but they said they could get a tech out here the next day at noon. I was about ready to pull my hair out with frustration by this point, so I just went ahead and scheduled. Sure enough, they had an electrician out to my house the next day. Rico was great. He was very competent, professional, and friendly. I briefed him on the problem and what I'd checked so far, and then he got right to work. He talked through his hypotheses with me and kept me informed of what he was doing at every step of the way. He ruled out a problem with the breaker quickly. Then he started checking individual switches. Nothing wrong there, either. He checked some of the outlets that weren't working and discovered they were still getting power but had a polarity issue. (I didn't fully understand this part - I'm no electrician.) He said the problem was probably that something was wired wrong or that a wire had come loose somewhere on the circuit. He started taking apart outlets, and the second one he tried was the problem. Weirdly, it was an outlet we have never even used! The neutral wire had come into contact with the outlet casing where the ground wire connects, so I guess it was bleeding return power on the circuit to the ground wire. The neutral wire insulation had been scorched where the wire connected to the outlet. Rico replaced that outlet, and voila! Everything works again. Overall, I was totally satisfied with Rico. Like I said, he was very professional and friendly, and I appreciate that he told me what he was doing as he went and talked through his diagnosis and theories about what the problem could be. My only complaint about the service was price. With the $179 diagnostic fee, plus labor and the one part that was replaced, the service ended up being over $375 in total. I showed Rico an offer on the company's website for $25 off a first residential service, and he discounted me that amount, bringing the total down to $351.65. That still seems a bit pricey for about 1hr of work and one new outlet. That said, this is the first time I've ever hired an electrician, and no one else even got me quote before Volt Doctors got out here and did the job, so I don't have any benchmarks to compare them to on pricing. At the end of the day, though, I'm glad everything is working again and that Rico was able to find and fix the problem quickly. I had electrical work contracted by Volt Doctor's in July of 2015 and I am still working on problems that they created. When my house was totally rewired they did not pull the old wiring out of the house and the person they suggested to patch the holes they created when doing the wiring did not know how to patch plaster (found out later that it was one of the guy's father). I also found out they did not replace an electrical box on my front porch and left old wiring above the new wiring the placed. When they finished with the work, they did not clean up after themselves and left a mess in my attic. I had to call them back out to have them clean up the mess. I would not recommend this company to anyone based on their professionalism and knowledge of how to complete an electrical project. Collette C. read more
