During the wind storm we had last weekend, Duke absolutely dropped the ball. Below is my experience as well as pictures of live wires blocking roadways for almost 30 hours unattended. #1 - the power was out for a total of 44 hours, which is completely unacceptable especially when other people 1/8th of the mile down the road were back up within 7 hours.We werent even provided with any updates and the time was stuck at 10:00 on 3/3/23 as expected time to be resolved, even after we went past that time frame. #2- It took over 27 hours for anyone from the power company to even show up in my area to take a look at anything. Power was lost at 2:30pm on 3/3/23 and the first time I saw anyone out here was at 5:00pm on 3/4/23. Also during this entire time, live power lines were laying in the middle of the roadway as a hazard to have to navigate around to get out of the neighborhood which is absolutely insane. I have pictures to prove this if you would like to see them. #3 - we were finally alerted at 6:00pm on 3/4/23 that the power was restored. We headed home only to find that that was a LIE. Power was still off. We had to re report the outage and was then told it would be noon on 3/5/23 before it would be restored. (finally was restored around 10:30am on 3/5/23 44 hours after outage started). Also, we as of this time, we were the only road in all of canton without power according to the outage map. Why did no one come back until the next day? #4 - due to having no power/heat during wintertime, we had to have a two night stay in a hotel because we have an infant child that cannot stay in that environment. That cost almost $350 itself #5 - due to the power being off for so long, $400 worth of food was spoiled and had to be transported to the dump At the end of the day, we were lied to, forgot about, left with dangerous hazards, and over $750 out of pocket. I am contemplating taking this story to WLOS or another media outlet as this is ridiculous and no one else should have to go through this and Duke should be held accountable to higher standards than what we received as loyal paying customers. read more

Power to the nearby spectrum box was cut and reported to Duke on Friday around 3am...two spectrum technicians have been out to the home along with one at our neighbors and are blaming the issue in Duke. Duke has not reached out with a timeframe for when it will be resolved and so the customer service with this company as everyone else has stated is extreme poor. We pay our bill on time yet they do not fix issues in a timely manor for customers. Very sad we all must be slaves to energy company monopolies. read more

After seeing all the negative reviews, I just had to weigh in. First of all, I have always paid my bills on time, so there have never been any troubles with disconnect etc. Whenever there have been the rare power outtages, Duke has responded quickly and with text and phone call followup. Really, they are pretty amazingly service oriented, especially for a government monopoly utility. Rates are mostly set by the government, so I can't complain about that either. The only wish I have is that they would bury more utility lines rather than suffer outtages during storms. read more

Duke just shut off my power without warning, for not paying a bill that they never sent to me. They're supposed to give ten days notice - they never did. They're supposed to give 24 hours notice - they never did. And before some shill for Duke chimes in and says "we gave all legally required ... you must not have ..." Note this: Within five minutes of having the power turned back on Duke both texted me and left me a voice mail that they had turned the power back on. So it's not like they were unable to contact me. As a side note, the guy who turned the power back on was sitting in his car just outside my apartment right after the power went off. I'm sure it's some kind of scam there, too. read more

They will email you about how great your power usage is, special tips for your home during storms, but will totally not contact you about a late payment. Come home from work after midnight to a tag on your door/power off. Been in my location for over a decade, always pay my bills. Late/forget it once and off it goes. I immediately paid it over the phone. I will be calling back in the am. Shame they run a monopoly in this area. BS business practice, but why care about the small guy right? read more

Awesome company to deal with. We have been using Duke Power since 2004 and always had great service. If the power goes out during a storm I get a text message instantly to update me and they keep me updated till they have it repaired. I have the app that I use to pay bill and watch my electric consumption. Although I am not at home and nothing is running other than the fridge and so on, my electric bill is getting higher everyday. it is like a surge to 56KWH and to 5KWH...-I just rent a studio and paying more than $100 dollars a month for electricity. I work 6 days and live by myself. I use my place pretty much to take shower and sleep. Never cook in my house other than make coffee in the morning. read more

Screw Duke. Their customer service is essentially nonexistent, even once you finally get them to pick up the phone. They shut off my electricity about two weeks into my service because I didn't pay a bill that was allegedly due the day my service started but in all the time I spent on the phone to set my service up was never mentioned once. When I called them to pay that bill and get my electricity turned back on, I was charged a large fee for it to be turned back on. I called them every day for almost a week to discuss that fee which I believed to be unfair and incorrect, and I somehow couldn't get through to anyone and eventually gave up because, y'know, time is money and I didn't need to waste any more on this stupid company. Online payment was returned by Duke Energy Progress/ Charlotte .Try to scam $5 return fee added to monthly bill. No notification from bank or Duke Energy. I don't recommend online payment at the self serve. I had bad experience. Asked for a $5 reversal of the fee. I refuse to pay. Took an hour on the phone to settle with Duke Energy. I've never paid so much for electricity and heat. I have baseboard heater and I pay $300 a month for four months during the winter. I lived in Montana and never paid over $100 for heat and electricity. Also I was never charged a deposit fee if I had to pay late forgot my electricity turned off.. this company is such a scam. I got my electricity turned off today when it was 30° out and I have a one-year-old needs to have bottles and food warmed up. And after I paid the $250 fee that no one discussed with me, they took 15 hours to turn back on my heat. Duke-Energy offers insurance through Utility Partners of America for indoor wiring, hot water heater, and sewer pipe repair/replacement. I purchased the premium sewer pipe repair/replacement and ground restoration policy. I have been paying on it for 3+ years. I had a blockage yesterday and they dispatched a plumber who found I had Orangeburg Pipe and a break in the line blocked by roots. The terms and conditions excluded Acts of God, war, damage done by customer, etc. Well, when my quote was presented to UPA, they denied coverage citing a root was an Act of God. Now no reasonable person would consider an act of God to be slow growing root. It is NOT a fortuitous loss because roots are expected to be in the ground. Duke-Energy and UPA has deliberately left out the exclusion for Roots in their Terms and Conditions because no sane person would buy this policy knowing that root damage wasn't covered. This is the worst energy company I have ever dealt with. I called about the repair ticket on the house below us. They have a generator going constantly because of the repeated power outages on Oxner Cove Road in Waynesville. After thirty minutes of waiting for someone to pick up the phone, I gave up. How can Haywood County or any municipality contract with a utility with such a poor track record for constant power outages, unexplained service delays and abominable customer service. While I am furious with the guy with the power outage for running a generator that is disturbing everyone on the mountain, I can understand why he hard wired it to start up every time he loses power because we lose it all the time. Then the service people ignore the outages, take their sweet time with repairs they caused, and don't answer the phone when people call to ask for status information. Haywood County should be ashamed of itself for not actively intervening to improve service. read more

This review serves no purpose, as you, dear reader know what I'm going to say. Duke Energy is not going to change it's behavior. I am a man that needs to vent, and maybe you will find in this rant some entertainment. So lets begin. I moved to Asheville from Chicago. My experiences so far with customer service in this region have been superb. Then The Duke shows up. I need electricity, Duke Energy is my only option, so lets get this done. I call. I trudge through voice prompts that are seemingly worthless to everyone that doesn't own a backhoe, choose a buried operator option (hitting zero doesn't work), wait 45 minutes, and then get an immediately annoyed operator. I apologized twice for breathing just to calm her down. She says the computers are being weird and I might have to call back "or something", then says I need to pay a $130 deposit if my credit is bad. She checks, my credit is bad (it is not, not even close). I ask what she sees that says my credit is bad. She says she can't see anything but "bad", but thinks it might have to do with the home history and not my credit. Me: "What are my choices?" Her: "No electricity." I'm baffled, but tired and starving at now 9 pm, and so relent. OK, lets do it. She claims she has to transfer me to a third party to collect payment. The transfer fails, and I'm hung up on. Another 45 minute operator wait. I'm hung up on again. Important note, the operator started the process and would cut off my electricity that the landlord has on if the deposit is not paid in 24 hours. This third attempt I notice the pay option in the voice prompts on my way to the hidden operator option. Why would they send me to a third party if this works? No way this works. In a matter of minutes a very friendly robot gracefully guides me through payment of my deposit. Why did the operator so hate this lovely robot? This happened months ago. There is a reason I bring this up now. I'm going to make a large purchase and wanted to check my credit. On a credit report it shows who checked your credit. Guess who didn't run one on me. I bet you the robot would have. read more

Duke is terrible. Just had my power disconnected for "not paying my bill". The only problem with that is that I moved into this house less than two weeks ago. I wish to have a negative rating option here instead of zero rating. Duke energy created a monopoly and now they are doing whatever they want to do. Duke Energy isn't taking serious note and didn't give a damn to these reviews and customer complains. I am very new to duke and was told to deposit $200 to start my service on same call I gave them credit card info and assumed that I would get a detail bill in mail. After 10 days I am out of power. I called them and found out that payment wasn't made yet. I was shocked because I gave them my credit card info, don't know why they were unable to charge although I had money and everything was fine with the card and second of all in those 10 days I got 4 to 5 duke promotional email then why they didn't notify about my payment and the power disconnection. Now they are charging me for the disconnection and re-connection fee. When you buy a coke or pepsi through your credit card do you pay $1.50 credit card fee? Why would we pay Duke energy every time $1.50 when we pay through credit/debt card? We are giving them more business(in dollars) as compare to buying a coke but again no one cares for $1.50 as it looks so small but when you do some math you would know the value of your money ($1.50 times Millions of customer paying through debit/credit) read more

Dark Ages Technology and Communication. Customer Service is awful. Literally do not care and sound like robots. My payment has been on autopay for 6 years. I moved to a new county approx one hour away and requested a "letter of good credit" so that I would not have to pay a $500 deposit for the new company. "Customer Service" told me the letter was sent out last Tuesday (not possible considering it has not been received in 6 days) and refused to send it any other way than snail mail. When I asked why it could not be sent to me securely through fax, I was told this is their policy. This literally does not make sense as fax is a secure form of communication. Told me there's no office I can pick anything up so I'm just stuck. read more

Duke Energy Progress is pathetic! We turned off our air conditioning because we were going to be out of country for two months. We notified them. We get our bill for the first month we were absent and it was as high as when we are home using the air conditioner. I called them and was told we must have made a mistake and left it on. We called the apartment manager and had them go into the apartment and double check to be sure it was off. IT WAS OFF. Now they claim we owe the similar amount for this month!!! Apparently whether you use much electricity or not, they bill the same. PATHETIC!!! read more
