Requested a quote for service from Johnny Rogers in September 2023 who stalled me for over 2 months without ever doing more than promising that he would get back to me! He went on vacation and then on Thanksgiving Holiday without any reply or schedule for service. As a result my project went over budget by more than $10,000 and was 90 days late! Never again will I use Gentry for anything, especially HVAC! I only wish that I could give them a worse rating! read more

Two years ago I purchased 3 HVAC units from Gentry, and was very pleased in every way. What happened to this company?? Now I am TRYING to have them install a whole house generator. First, they placed the unit on the pad without centering it. Then, the ONE thing I was so concerned about was allowing them to drill 2 1/2" hole through a 2 foot rock and brick wall. We thoroughly discussed this - with the salesperson AND the installer. The line from the unit was to come straight back into the wall, where this big hole was to be. That did not happen. Then the electrical lines were to be run through THAT hole, and run INSIDE to the breaker box. This was the safest way to do this, would cause the least damage, AND it avoided running any other electrical lines outside. Instead, they drilled the big hole 12 FEET away from the unit and ran their lines on the OUTSIDE, making 5 MORE holes in my rock to attach the DRAPING flexible conduit. It looked HORRIBLE. THEN they filled the 2 1/2 hole with sloppy silicone which is also unacceptable. I contacted the supervisor, who came out to try to rectify the situation. He was to replace the draping conduit with metal conduit and run INSIDE. This seemed to be impossible for them to do, as they would have to simply slide a small countertop shelving unit aside! At this point I had no choice but agree to the line running outside. Of course, with the sloppy initial installation, the metal conduit had to follow those lines to avoid making even MORE holes in my 100+ year old beautiful rock work. Now that electrical line conduit slants downward 12 feet to the hole that should never have been made. The gas line will be run straight (as it should be) so this will all look even worse. This supervisor told me that he would have a masonry person properly fill the big hole. He did not do this. Instead, he simply did it himself, and used the wrong product. This product has DEEP cracks in it after just one week, and it never hardened. THIS is also not acceptable. I have zero confidence in Gentry at this point. I cannot believe how badly this installation has been already. Before this job began, the sales person had planned to put the unit in an area where it could not be done at all! I had to suggest a more appropriate spot for it myself! What in the world?? There has not been ONE aspect of this job that has been done correctly, in the 2 weeks (so far) that it has been worked on. NO, do not use Gentry. I understand that it is not the same LOCAL company that it had always been, that it is now a large, multi-location corporation. None of this issue is storm-related at all. There is no excuse for so many mistakes. In fact, I will be contacting an inspector to make note of this, and to tell ME whether any of this is even safe. read more

I have been requesting a call back for 3 weeks to schedule a service for the HVAC and Generator, both of which have Gentry Maintenance contracts. I have made at least six calls in the past 3 weeks since the hurricane and have been connected to a message that I will get a call back as soon as possible. Three weeks seems a bit long for as quickly as possible. The Gentry serviced the generator twice in the last year; however, during the Helene Hurricane, it failed to start because the service technicians needed to notice that the battery for the generator was 10 years old, and these are 2-year batteries. I would like to get a call back from Gentry so I am posting this review. I withdraw this review as I got a call from gentry and got the services scheduled. read more

Overall I am not happy with my experience with this company. They did not seem to understand what my expectations were for the work I had requested. They were slow to respond and there was an overall lack of communication. There also seemed to be some miscommunication between who first came and looked at the house and saw what was needed to be done, who I spoke with on the phone to set this up and who was doing the the work on the house. This resulted in them having to come back out and fixing what had been done and it ended up costing me more than I had expected and taking twice as long to get done. 3 stars for the installer doing good work, being very friendly, and happy with the fully completed ductwork. But not happy the whole experience and the company as a whole. read more

Gentry installed the HVAC in our brand new (1 year old) townhome in Asheville. We've gone from no heat in March to no AC in July. They've been here countless times. Each time Gentry attempts a repair but they seem to lack knowledge on how to fix the system they installed. Additionally, they leave and tell us they have to order a part or contact the manufacturer but a week and sometimes two weeks later, we are the ones reaching out to get status reports. After 3 months of multiple repair attempts on our 4th-floor unit last evening, we thought it might be finally fixed. UNBELIEVABLY we now find ourselves worse off. This morning the entire system failed and we have NO AIR CONDITIONING in ANY ROOM. It's going to be 89 today. Gentry installed my HVAC system and recommended an air scrubber because I have asthma. Terry Evans said the UV bulb would last 4-5 years. After the 1st year the bulb was burnt out. They replaced the bulb at no cost. 2 years later the bulb is again burnt out but they sent me an estimate of $664 to replace the bulb. The bulb lists for under $200, AND I'm paying $350 a year for a maintenance contract that says it covers ALL LABOR AND PARTS. They refuse to budge on the price so I will order the bulb myself and replace it. Good riddance to Gentry. read more

From the installation of our mini split to general HVAC maintenance, our family has been a fan of Gentry Heating and Air for years; however, after our fantastic experience today, I had to leave a positive review. We've been having issues with mold on our ceiling and were told from our roofing company that the ducts in the attic could be a contributing factor. Less than two hours after I called to schedule an estimate, Justin from Gentry came to take a look. Not only did he ease our minds about the ductwork, but also he discovered that our chimney is leaking. We couldn't be more grateful for this observation as well as his kindness and professionalism. Well after the last review I posted I am forced to upgrade my review since I did get an excellent response from Gentry in regard to upgrading the thermostats in my home. The technician who called me was extremely knowledgeable and at this point I now know what is the best approach to doing the upgrade. I appears that my emails and phone calls somehow went astray and/or never got to the right person at Gentry. It was emphasized that they do care about their residential customers. Gentry regularly services the HVAC system they installed in our second home in Hendersonville. Just before the great freeze of December 2022, we got a notification from our smart thermostat (eternally grateful) of a temperature drop in the house. A service call was quickly scheduled and a part, first believed to be remote, was located and delivered fast. I am extremely impressed with the professionalism exhibited by Gentry service technicians and phone staff. I had a problem with my generator and Gentry came out to service it the very next day after I called. The technician showed up as scheduled and worked for an hour to service it. He got it running again, but there was a internal problem with the motor outside the scope of what Gentry services. Because the problem wasn't completely resolved, Gentry did not charge me for the service call. I don't know any other company that would work for an hour and not charge me. I used Gentry to install the heat pump system for my home 10 years ago and have always called them for service because they're reliable and honest. read more

We are very pleased with our new units. We got a heat pump and A/C unit and a split unit for our upstairs attic bedroom. They all work splendidly. The installation was pretty painless, though the technicians had to install both units in terrible weather. None of them complained but I know they were miserable. It rained and rained. I guess I should say it was painless for us. The techs really had a sloppy job and I know they went home covered in mud everyday. We have had a couple of questions since the units were installed this spring and, every time we called, someone has been out quickly. Everyone we have worked with from Gentry has been super friendly and very helpful. I'm so glad we chose this company for our new equipment. read more

Don't call these folks There are so many other, smaller HVAC companies in Asheville that you could call instead of calling this company. They are a major ripoff. Our heat pump went and they charged us $100 just to come out and tell us what we already knew. They then charged us nearly $700 to fix it and told us they wouldn't know if the compressor was damaged until they fixed the electronics to turn on the heat pump. We discovered after paying them that the compressor was damaged. I spoke with other HVAC techs outside of Gentry and they told me that this was not true. Gentry will lie to you, overcharge you for simple work and steal your money. They also promised to call me with a quote on compressor repair which they never did. I had to call them over a week later. Save yourself money and time and don't call this company. read more

Our air conditioner went out the night before Memorial Day. After I called Gentry, John Connelly, the service man on call, phoned us within a few minutes and was at our home in less than an hour. Gentry installed the heating and cooling in our new house six years ago. Their employe who designed our system insisted that we did not need separate thermostat systems for the part of house over a basement and parts on a concrete slab. He stood by it when questioned if that would work. The result has been temperatures that are freezing in winter in our bedroom and bathroom, 10 degrees or more colder than the living room. We often have to supplement the heat in our bedroom with a space heater because of the difference. Heavy blankets on our beds aren't enough. We also have to heat our bathroom with extra heat. It has been really hard living with this and greatly raises our electricity use and cost. read more

If you want to overpay and be mislead, PLEASE GIVE GENTRY A CALL, otherwise I would advise avoiding their service. One primary area of concern their technicians are comped on advising that you "need a new unit." So when they are incentivized to have your HVAC unit replaced, you inherently cannot trust the technician. We were misled by their pricing scheme over the phone to ensure we would keep the appointment, and then upon completion of their work they clued us in on their true pricing. (Specifically: We told them we had a two unit HVAC system and they quoted $193 full year service plan, and later it turns out that number would double). Oh and their service plan didn't include any discounts or amenities like the capacitor that they put in without asking and then charged $100. The only reason they got 2 stars instead of 1, their technician was polite and curteous while on the job. The silver lining of polite, is ruined with being overcharged by several hundred dollars. read more

Requested a service call in January, 2017 when my system (which had never been serviced since the home was built in 2010) seemed to be struggling. Signed up for the service plan at that time and just had my first of two tune ups for the year from technician, Chadd Kittle. He arrived on time, was polite, focused, and completed the entire tuneup in about an hour. Very pleased and looking forward to a similar experience at my next tuneup in the fall. read more

I've used them every year just to do tune ups on my oil HVAC. I honestly haven't had any problems but they do take a long time to schedule each fall -- although i do wait till "busy season" to schedule so that is their reason. I haven't had any issues and my HVAC has worked great the past 7 years from having yearly tune ups. My only complaint is that i really don't think it should take so long to schedule a basic tune up and i may try a new company who can come out quicker. read more

We recently had our entire HVAC system replaced by Gentry. The sales guy, John, was very knowledgeable and did a great job explaining what needed to be replaced and crafted a solution that best fit our house. The quote was slightly lower than the other two places we called. The communication was excellent. We knew who was coming and when and they showed up on time and were clean and timely. The follow up was great since we had a filter on another system that needed to be replaced and they came back the next week, as promised, and took care of it. I would highly recommend them if you need HVAC work done. Our system has only been in place a month or so. It's probably too early to rate the performance of the overall system until heavy heating and cooling is needed. First impressions are quite high. read more

Our a/c kept freezing up and was getting uneven airflow with the dampers. Called another company and totally upsold us to needing a whole new system . Which made no sense to me. And told me could not do the work for a month. People told to call Gentry as they have a good reputation. Will came out did an evaluation concluded the problem and gave us a proposal only needing what needed to be replaced. Tony ordered the parts & within a week the job was complete. While it cost us $1,800 it was substantially less then our quote from a respected competitor which was totally upsold Will did a great job and explained everything to us. read more

I wouldn't give them more than 1 star, simply because they didn't fulfill their 24 hr service, as advertised. When you have an emergent problem on a Friday night, I don't expect to have to wait until Monday morning for a technician to come out and diagnose the problem. Another reason is that I had a quote for a new motor, over the phone, without anyone coming out to look at my system or even asking what brand it was. Something smelled fishy about that from the start. read more
