Donuts were very good as usual. We ordered a random dozen. The real problem was they skipped over our number and a couple other people. We waited nearly half an hour after ordering in store for our donuts. I had to go up and ask why were were skipped until they saw the receipts for 3 orders just laying on the counter under a trophy. I know, I know, this is a HUGE TRADITION when people go on vacation on the Outer Banks. we had a Duck Donuts in Hershey, PA, too--maybe because Hershey's a tourist town. But really, Duck Donuts are just pretty much sweet little rings of dough, fried and dunked in sweet substances--either sugar or frosting or whatever. They're fine. But I wouldn't center my week, or even my day, on a visit. All the seating there is, is outdoors, and ants cover the tables and benches. Gross. In the end, I prefer Winchell's, and my husband, who eats far more donuts than I do, really thinks donuts ought to be cold and chewable rather than hot and marshmallowy. So hard to resist! We were staying across the street at a hotel. So, we were excited when we saw this as we pulled up to our hotel. It was Memorial day weekend and man was it slammed! We thought getting their by 8am would help, but the line was out the door. The staff was working very hard! I was impressed with how fast the line moved. The service was fantastic! Super friendly! They gave us a free donut because my husband was wearing his Duck Donut t-shirt. We all have one...so next time, we will all wear our shirts! AMAZING. I'd eat a Duck Donut every day if I lived close and if it wouldn't kill me, eventually. I'd been here a few years ago but rediscovered on our most recent trip to OBX. My husband and I had dinner at High Cotton, next door, and decided to stop in for dessert/breakfast for the next day. The cashier seemed a little lacking in personality, but I'll chalk it up to the fact that it was 5pm and she was probably tired of explaining donuts, toppings and how to order all day. We ordered a half dozen and had them dipped as follows: strawberry, vanilla, glazed, maple and 2 chocolate with sprinkles. We ate the strawberry as soon as we got in the car and my husband was hooked-- he immediately remarked that we should have gotten a dozen. No worries, though, as there are plenty of Duck Donuts' around and they're open from 6am-9pm! Served hot and fresh, the light cake melted in your mouth and was not too sweet, serving as the perfect base for whatever dip or topping you choose. We finished the box off by the next morning after sharing with my sister and nephew. My favorite was the strawberry, least favorite was the glazed, as it just seemed wet and sticky. Everything was so good that my sister went out 2 days later and returned with a dozen to share and take home. Sad that we live 1000 miles away and only get to the OBX once every few years... maybe I can look into having my family start shipping donuts to us here in Chicago? read more

I wish they had one of these in Indianapolis! We stopped by for an afternoon snack and walked out with 12 donuts because they smelled so good. Once we got back to our hotel we devoured them. These were some of the best donuts I have ever eaten and I never turn down a donut (or ice cream). They have several locations through the OBX area but we only tried this location. You can't beat a donut place that is right across from the hotel you are staying at for convenience. This location is right across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn. I went around 9 in the morning and the donuts were fresh (at least, they were still warm). They top it while you are standing there -- everything is customized to your taste. I got chocolate icing with rainbow sprinkles and by the time I got my donut, the icing was somewhat melty but not tooo melty. Very nice. The sprinkles were good too, actually. They had a nice 'crunch'. The two ladies working there were very pleasant. I was looking forward to the coffee which was labeled as some sort of locally roasted organic blend, but it was lukewarm. It may have been sitting in the container all morning. In general, the coffee (I tried the dark and the light) was not strong enough. read more
