I went to this diner years ago when it was good. But after this visit I will not be returning. I ordered a simple soup and sandwich combo. Chicken soup, tuna salad sandwich on wheat, and asked for lettuce, tomato and onion. The sandwich arrived on stale wheat bread, with nothing but tuna salad in it. I sent it back for lettuce, tomato and onion, and it came back with just lettuce and tomato. I gave up on that. But the soup was the worst part. As I was eating it, I found a large, raw piece of chicken in it. I mean this was really pink and raw. There was no doubt about it. I nicely told the waitress about this and she didn't apologize. She just took it away and back into the kitchen. I was still charged for the soup/salad combo on the bill. I have a high tolerance for bad service, but being served raw chicken really crosses the line. Isn't that food safety 101? read more

My waitress's idea of how to Do her job, was to sit in a booth and look at her phone. I very dissapointed in her service. Usually good at this restaurant. I had to ask the manager to get my waitress for me, he simply told her I was ready to order. Once my food arrived, my empty drink say on the table till after I was done eating. My drink was water!!! This is usually a free re-fill item. When the manager had to alert my waitress I was ready for the check I thought for sure he would tell her to put her phone away and pay attention to her customers, but no. After dropping off my check without so much as a thank you, back to the phone. Good job duchess diner for turning off a customer who once liked your service. Rude staff: I called in an order and stood right in front of the guy at the register for 4 minutes while he completely ignored me and yelled a conversation with someone 20ft away at the counter Cheeseburger was ok, fries were disgusting and soggy and the coleslaw smelled funny. Straight to the point. - lots and lots of options, but a clear organized menu. -despite the variety, they do a decent job on just about all areas, no lack of focus in certain areas. - dinner entrees are excellent, much better than ihop. - you get what you paid for, good honest prices and good generous portions. nothing sneaky. -big and spacious. - surprisingly good lamb. they are able to pull of off the greek flavor they try to add. for a diner level at least as to why some people are dissastisfied.... -short staffed, simply not enough servers to go around. empty coffee cups and missing silverware. - home fries need work, its one of the foundations of a diner, and they need to be golden brown, crispy on the bottum, and lightly seasoned, not mushy and bland. -eggs, anothrr foundation they need to work on. often overcooked... omelettes are dry and often slightly burnt. scrambles are dry and crumbly... should be soft and moist with a good hint of butter. read more

Why am I too stupid to read the other Yelp reviewers before I go to a restaurant like this? I called in an order for pickup. When I got there the guy ask me for my money as if the order was ready, took my money and then walked away to the back. At that point I thought maybe my order was in the back. I then saw him making my order from scratch from the beginning. I can't leave because he's already taking my money. So when he comes back I asked him " let me ask you a question: what did you think I meant when I called in an order for pickup?" He then argumentatively retorts back, " let me ask YOU a question: why does someone call in an order for pickup late at night?" I told him the person was probably tired and didn't want to watch an order being made from scratch. He proceeded to argue more but I simply asked for my money back and left. Frankies Diner is much better tasting than this place and has better service too. This Diner I admit is in a better location and looks nicer but is actually dirty and has so many problems that you're better off driving to the other Diner. Arriving for dinner at 5:30 on a Thursday night revealed a mostly empty restaurant. We were told to pick a seat. Menus were dropped on our table. A server appeared in short order with two glasses of water and our dining utensils wrapped in a napkin. The menu is extensive. Breakfast lunch and dinner are all available. There are baked, broiled, fried and cold options along with a robust desert menu. Food arrives at the table in dribs and drabs. The salad arrived the dressing came on a second trip. Some of the soup had slopped onto the plate the cup rested on. Entrees arrived with the sides coming minutes later. We were a table of two. Jack of all trades,master of none may best describe what you should expect. Mashed potatoes, were instant, served with gravy from a mix with pimento added to it, resulting in a yellow sauce with red bits. The turkey dinner was actually turkey roll, not roasted turkey. The bread was homemade, as was very good. The salad was crisp and the Italian dressing was good. The iced tea was fresh brewed. The cauliflower was fresh. Broccoli was not offered at my table but was served to another. The portions are large, the price is fair, the quality, while better than fast food, is not what I would expect at a hometown diner. Do not expect a warm and welcoming feeling, it does not exist here. From being seated to placing our order, we appeared to be a bother to the staff. I'm posting this review out of concern- I honestly don't believe these negative reviews reflect the experience of eating here. I live 2 blocks away from Dutchess Diner. I eat there all the time and I can't remember being that dissatisfied even once. I'm not calling the negative reviewers liars, but maybe there's a tendency to post a review when you've had a bad experience. Anyway, I think the service and the food is identical to the many other diners in the area. It's diner food.... not outstanding but appropriate. One diner in the area stands out in my mind, the Bridgeport Flyer diner in Milford. The quality of their food stands out, but the diner is often very crowded and noisy. read more

I ordered the roast pork dinner special to go last night and it was great. The entire meal tasted homemade. The portions were huge and the price was very reasonable. This was the second time in two days that I had one of their dinner specials. The night before I had the stuffed cabbage which was also very good. I was pleasantly surprised that the food here reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. Homestyle cooking at its best. When I picked my food up the waitstaff was very welcoming. Whatever I wasn't going to make a fuss and just wanted my check to leave. This diner used to be one of favorites, but recently I had a very bad dining experience. I order the prime rib, as I have done in the past often. I always order my meat medium rare. I eat here all the time, so staff know me. My order came well done. I asked the waitress to correct this. Next thing I know, she's talking about the issue at the other end of the diner, then the plate I sent back was returned to me and I was told that's all I could get. I told her this was not acceptable. The manager got involved and he was no help either. Me and my date left and refused to accept meat cooked not to order. I was really disappointed, angry, and humiliated by staff talking about our issues with others in the diner. I don't know what's going on with this place, but food and service are going down hill. Me and my mother used to frequent this diner years ago when the old owner had it. We've recently seen big crowds so we figured we'd give it a try and see how it was. We were seated and the original booths from way back when are still there. The waitress (Charlene) that took our order was quite rude....and just plain not nice. My mom commented it was getting colder out to her.....and she igonored my mom. Mom said it again....and said....oh hon I guess you didn't hear me. And she snapped at her saying.....I HEARD YOU.....and stomped off. I got the chicken orzo soup and mom got the beef vegetable. Both soups were very good!!!!!!!! Actually the soup was the only good thing about the meal. Mom got the veal and peppers....and it was loaded with mushrooms....and she hates them. Was very watery too. She ordered it over mashed potatoes and the waitress just ordered it over rice. I got the meatloaf. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE THAT WAS!!!!!!!!! It was like spiced dog food......cooked to hell!!!!!!!!!! Totally BLECHHHHHH!!!!!!! Mom didn't complain about not getting mashed potatoes.....cause this woman was already bitched out. Then before we left mom seen that the waitress was wearing some kind of charms necklace. I didn't want to post any review about this horrible place but I can't get the incident off my mind. Last month about 8 friends and myself went to this diner after a night out. We were having a great night and always go to this diner for we enjoy the food/ reasonable pricing. Two of my friends were in deep conversation about politics. I understand this isn't a topic many people enjoy but they were not in heated conversation, however the waitress did not like one of my friend's opinions. She never brought him his order OR EVEN WATER for that matter. We spoke to the owner after we received our checks about this issue. My friends were talking to him (all my friends are male, I should add. I am the only female in our group). I opened my mouth to talk to the owner and he put his hand in my face. His hand was out straight in my face to tell me to not talk. I was jaw dropped stunned. I never experienced sexism in my life until that moment. I tried to speak again and he put his hand in my face AGAIN and said SHHH. I left this diner crying and in disbelief. Do not give this place your money they are horrible horrible people. Although I went at around 10:30 pm, there was enough staff to take the order quickly. The food however was substandard. I ordered the buffalo wrap and the chicken was unidentifiable. It was too crispy and no sauce. I asked the waiter where was the sauce. He said it was in the chicken. Well it looked like little pork rinds since it was chopped up into 1/2 inch pieces. The side order of bacon although asked for extra crispy didn't even come closed. I believe the food is pre made and just heated up when ordered except for egg orders. This is not my first time there. Usually when I'm there the rude and unfriendly owner is there and I've have been there to even here people's dislike of the owner. Last time there a woman did not want to go in alone since she saw the owner and when her friend showed up she told her friend that she waited because she said the owner is a creep. My daughters friend was with a group and the owner said they couldn't sit together. I live right around the corner from this diner, so i thought it would be an easy process to call in a simple order. When i called it in the person who answered the phone couldn't handle it so he passed me onto one of the waitress's. All i wanted was a large house salad with grilled chicken and one small house salad. didn't think this would have been a difficult order to make. Got there 15/20 minutes after i called it in. (thinking this was plenty of time) And low and behold my order wasn't even ready! I had to wait now for another 20/30 minutes for my order. the man who claimed to be the manager never once left the register. i felt sorry for the two waitress's who were taken care of everything and anything. when my food finally came out the manager wanted to charge me $14. I didn't think it was very fair to charge me full price for a meal that should have taken 10 minutes to make not an hour! I asked him to discount it in some way and he refused. He said he didn't have the power to do that. What manager does not have to the power to make sure his paying customers are happy. If the waitress weren't so apologetic and explaining to me that there new cook was an idiot. i would have left. and on top of it all when i got home and opened my salad it wasn't even made correctly like i asked for it. i asked for a house salad with no onions and pepper. there were peppers in it and I'm pretty sure there was feta cheese as well I HATE FETE CHEESE!!!. Glad to see the manager is just a cashier and not making sure his business is operating to it's full potential. Do not eat at this diner EVER! The place is dirty, the food is nothing special, and the service from staff and management is completely disrespectful. My father and brother in law ordered to go. While waiting for their food, a waitress walked by and made homophobic and racists remarks towards them that I will not repeat. Totally unacceptable. Words were exchanged and my father in law left distraught, so my fiancé and I returned to the establishment with the food in hand. What the waitress said was wrong and we needed her and the manager to know that. We met with the manager right away bc he was at the entrance checking guests out. We explained what had happened and the manager asked us the name of the waitress. We didn't catch a name but described her. A waitress behind us backed our story completely because she saw the whole thing and said she didn't know the name of the waitress either, but her shift just ended. The manager said I don't know who you are talking about! And to that I said 'you don't know who works here?' And he said 'a lot of people work here!' So the manager then decided to ignore us and help another customer. When he was finished he asked us again what had happened bc he said he didn't understand. So we patiently told him the story again.... Three more times. Explaining that the words were disrespectful on many different levels. After each time we told the story his attitude grew. It seemed like our patience was getting him more angry and he was using words like 'get your father!' We aren't sure if he was trying to cause us to start cursing and yelling so he can call the cops, but it was totally absurd. At one point we even asked if there was someone else to speak to and he said no. He kept saying 'what do you want from me?' After getting that he was never going to get our message-that the words his waitress said were judgmental, rude, inappropriate, racist, and homophobic we decided to ask for our money back. He said he does not even know what was ordered. So I told him bc it was clearly written on the food container and he replied with 'I don't even know how much that cost!' So the manager took another customer who was waiting even before we got there. We patiently waited and the manager said 'I'm only giving you money because you are a girl!' To my fiancé and threw some money at her. We left angry that the managers actions and words expressed no care that a person in his staff said hateful things to another human being and told him we will never return again. Do not spend your money in this establishment-what we experienced is awful. People should never be treated like the way the staff at duchess diner treats people PERIOD! read more
