I have had Guinness in practically every bar I've ever walked into where it's available and I have to say that it tastes the best at the Dubliner. There have been studies done about how beer tastes better in the right atmosphere and I believe that it is true. I've been to all the fancy places downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis who try oh so very hard to look like fancy pubs in Dublin but that is about as far is it goes. You won't find fake vintage Guinness ads and newly printed copies of a Dublin newspaper from 1932 in a fancy frame on the wall at the Dubliner. They put whatever the hell they want on the walls, whether it's a beat up Irish flag or a portrait of JFK. The floor is dirty and the chairs are old and worn out, but for me this feels much more real. There's no huge crowd of dowtown jocks and meatheads with their bimbo girlfriends trying to feel Irish. Instead you will find your regulars and locals (real locals not just a name) having a pint and a good conversation. The only criticism I would have is that sometimes they don't have the usual popcorn machine going if there's not a lot of people there and I am always game for some popcorn with my Guinness, especially since there is nothing else to eat there. The music is always good, but more so on wednesday night. There is good chance you will see me there then because the group that plays that night is excellent and brings the perfect atmosphere for a night of "drinking and blackguarding." read more

I've yet to have a night at the Dubliner that wasn't excellent. Several of my best pub tales begin with, "We were at the Dubliner..." and more often than not, directly following, the chorus of listeners cries, " I love the Dubliner!" I am hesitant to even review it as stellar since I'd be loathe to see if overrun. But in the spirit of friendship, it is fantastic. Dark and cozy and perfect for a night when you really want to enjoy the company of your favorite friends, and make new ones... Shots of jameson, pints of guiness and of course, an irish lassies favorite, Magners Cider (Bulmers to those who've been across the sea on the emerald isle) Add the music and trivia to the list and note that the gents who play are usually amenable to a request or two. If you're looking for Irish Whiskey, an Irish Pint, or Classic cuisine with an Irish flair, I recommend it! A Pub atmosphere on one side casual dining on the other. We had a large group and shared some of the food items. Splitting the items to separate checks at the end was no big deal for our server. A well trained friendly knowledgeable staff provides a great Pub and Dining experience. The Chef has an incredible imagination - the menu is delicious, and unique! I had the goat cheese flat bread toasted triangles with a sweet red onion jam - POW! I've only been to the Dubliner twice, but will be returning often... And, of course, the reason is the live music! Who doesn't like listening to Irish jigs and drinking songs? My first impression was it doesn't have the physical ambience other pubs do...but again, the music is the great thing about this place. My introduction to the Dubliner was through the weekly ceili dancing sessions they had on Wednesdays and knowing some of the bands that played regularly. Love this smaller pub. It has a lot of seating for a small area. Huge bar selection. Bar tenders are rather attentive and chill. The free popcorn was great if you needed something to munch on while enjoying an ale. I like to come here for dinner, nothing like feasting on free popcorn, a bag of doritos, and beef jerky. Mike Tice even enjoyed coming out to the Dubliner when he coached the vikes, I dont think you can a better endorsement than that. Ok, I saw him there once, but I'll assume it was his second favorite bar in MN after bunny's in St Louis Park. My only annoyance with the place is credit card fee, so bring cash. Guiness with a smithwick's head, delicious. Service is friendly, fun atmosphere, and great food only matched by nearby convience stores and gas stations. read more

An excellent neighborhood bar. You can expect a quality Guiness pour in a friendly environment. This place has history on its side--witness the old Ace Box Bar sign on display, as well as a nice old Deco back bar. Bartenders are low key, and know what they are doing. There's always music, last night there was dancing too. No food beyond the free popcorn and/or what is offered by the vending machine. No credit cards (cash machine on premises). I've been going to the Dubliner Pub for years now. I dance there as many Wednesdays and I can, show up on all sorts of other days because they have some of the most entertaining live bands and a dance floor that is completely perfect. One of the best things about the Dubliner was the lack of screens. It was truly a place to meet people without the distraction of some flashing screen to distract from getting to the know the person on the bar stool next to you. I am saddened beyond words to have that TV playing in the corner. Every time I tried to watch the dances, my eyes were drawn to the bright flashing TV in the corner because that's what humans do. It use to be that during the dancing we were drawn to watch the flow of a skirt or kilt as the dancers spun and the silly antics of people moving to music. I will miss the old Dubliner Pub. It's so hard to find a bar without a TV...the Dubliner has lost one of it's best charms. read more

This is your classic example of both charming St. Paul and your local neighborhood watering hole. Best Irish pub in the twin cities and I say that with confidence. When I first began going there (circa 21 years of age), it only offered bags of chips for $.50 and Heggies pizzas, which being a simple man was enough for me, but in the last few years they took over the adjoining space in their building to offer a sit down restaurant which now includes a full kitchen. They've gone to great lengths to preserve the history of the location, evidenced by the enormous "Ace Bar" sign they have inside, which if you don't know, was what was originally in that spot 100 years ago. All kidding aside, the live music, the Kennedy posters on the wall, the ambiance and the fact that in spite of having a new kitchen with many more food options they still proudly serve an epic frozen pizza, is what keeps me returning. Hands down my favorite Irish pub and one of my overall favorites in STP. Head on up and sing along with the crowd. read more

This is a pretty dark dirty bar that happens to serve some good beer and whiskey. I would say it attracts a bit of a rougher crowd and if you don't fit the bill they don't really encourage your presence in the bar...no ambiance to the place. I enjoyed this bar, but I'm not sure why. It's a small bar on University that seems like a bar that's great when you are going with a group of people. The prices were alright- a little more than $5 for a beer, but with a 10% tax on credit card transactions. Old wooden tables and chairs are a nice change from big boxs that have plastic seating and tables. I probably will return for a beer with friends. I have been here exactly twice, with the two visits separated by 15 or so years, but I have enjoyed each visit. The beer selection has been improved over time, but I don't think many folks are partaking in the fancier beers as the Surly and Stone I had were a bit off tasting. Speaking of surly, the dude behind the bar certainly qualifies for that title, but he's a bar tender, and has to deal with people like me or worse all day so, that's actually not a negative. Good service. My friend enjoyed his full pint of Guinness. But please save yourselves and do not order the Guinness fish and chips. It was just a big old pile of doughy,greasy covered fish. And the chips weren't chips they were seasoned fries. I couldn't eat any of it I even tried to scrape the dough off but the fish was so greasy it was unpleasant to the taste. My friend put a bite in his mouth and actually then spit it out into a napkin. Very disappointed but again many stars for service read more

Went to the Cafe for Breakfast. The decor was very nice and clean. There were only 3 tables including us. The waiter was super nice but had no training or experience. The menu was sparse and had neither imagination nor the staples of a normal breakfast cafe. The omelets do not even come with cheese. The portions especially the hashbrowns were tiny. The plate was nothing pleasing to the eye. Just a plain untopped omelette. it was on the plate all catawampus. When the food came my wife did not get the fruit that came with her cakes. I did not get my toast or the cheese in my omelet. It was also very bland. When the plate came back the cheese was just put on the top of the same omelet unmelted. When my toast came it had no jelly. One of the strawberries that came with my wife's fruit was rotten. I think the owner has no idea what he is doing when it comes to running a restaurant and is to cheap to hire someone that does. Sorry. I don't like giving bad reviews but I think they should figure it out or close before they waste everyone's time and money including theirs. Maybe new owners that know how to run a restaurant. I wish this place had food that wasn't popcorn right by the bathroom. Why do bars always put their popcorn there? They have lots of games and a Trivial Pursuit that is old enough to have questions about the USSR. Great place to go with a small group of friends and on the LRT! Live music is always good. Do NOT go to trivia on Sundays it is TERRIBLE they literally had a category that was "people who used to come to this bar" and another category that was obscure Irish history like "who was the feudal lord in 1267 that held sway over what is now the home of the most famous moss-covered item over 6 feet tall?" and it was basically just for those types of people who want to be pretentious about stuff which no one else cares about. Plus the prize was lame if you won. Dance sessions are fun and just a titch bizarre. Get ready to hold hands with a lot of people! read more

Our Mahjongg group of 5-12 plays here weekly. The food is not haute cuisine, nor does it pretend to be. It's good, solid pub fare, reasonably priced, with attentive and friendly service. I haven't been a fan of veggie burgers, but their bean burgers are terrific. As are their fries. I've also enjoyed their fish and chips, chicken wings, soups and various sandwiches. The Dubliner has been a very good Irish bar for several years now, but they recently expanded and added a kitchen. I tried their fish and chips tonight and found them to be about as good as it gets. We went yesterday, a Sunday around 5pm. Walked in, not that busy had some music playing and a football game on. We sat at the bar for 15 minutes, there were just a few others at the bar, and were never acknowledged or served so we left and went somewhere else. The Dubliner Cafe (next door to the Dubliner Pub) is absolutely lovely. Casual dining and simple ingredient REAL food with an eye for detail. So far my absolute favorite is The Shamrock. A twist on a quesadilla with sweet potato, goat cheese, and black beans married together in all sorts of yumminess! If you are a meat eater, I hear people would give up a kidney for the Corned Beef sandwich. The service is friendly and the space has a fun and funky vibe. Got in a habit of stopping here with my lady for an early Friday (pre-dinner) cocktail awhile back. We were perfectly pleased with all of our experiences there; free popcorn, bartenders ipod shuffling better-than-average music, open seats at the bar and easy-going, small-ish crowd each time we went. But....... then we decided to switch it up one Friday and go to Merlin's Rest on Lake St in Mpls and lo and behold our eyes were opened. Gone was the additional tax on credit card tabs, present was free darts, a better outside seating area and cheaper drinks, specifically Powers on the rocks. So really no faults with the Dubliner in my book, but I just have a hard time finding my way back there when I know Merlin's Rest is so close.... read more

I have been to the Dubliner pub a few times in the past. I have always had a good time, lively atmosphere in the evenings. I have a particular fondness for 11am on Saturday when they open. Nice and quiet (for a pub) where I can enjoy a beer with my friend. Today I did the same but this was the first time I have been there since they expanded to include a cafe. They have really stepped up their game. I had a pitcher of beer and fish and chips in the pub. It was fantastic. I will be back. Friendly down to earth bartender and wait staff. What a bummer of a an experience over at the Dubliner on Monday March 3, 2014. That makes it 0 -3 as a place to go and hang out and have fun. We were there to celebrate a family members memory (I am intentionally leaving out the last name but all the regulars know what that night was about). My lovely wife and I went up to the bar to get a beverage. There was only one bartender (let's not get into really stupid planning regarding staffing on a night such as that) so we understood he was busy. What we did not understand is why he continued to walk past us and ignore us well after it was clear we had been waiting the longest. Several people came up right next to us and he took care of them. Maybe he was being nice and not over serving us....except we had not had a single alcoholic beverage period. I am so bummed this is the crappy bar our family continually chooses to honor and celebrate our fallen loved one. It absolutely pains me to give them any business at all. After waiting at the bar for over 20 minutes we both said "hey, that cost them a good buck-fifty spot, as our intention was to buy a round for our entire group. Word out to the bartender GET ANOTHER JOB where people will be cool with you being an asshole instead of just wanting to punch you in the face. Cheers! read more

Went here for lunch for the first time and ordered fish and chips. The waitress said there would be two big portions of fish. When I got my food, there was one tiny greasy piece. I basically paid $12.95 for a plate of french fries. My wife got a cold cup of sub-par beef stew. I will never eat here again. read more

I live a half mile from the Dubliner and I stop in now and then for a pint. Great live music is frequent and fun. Prices are very reasonable, selection of local brews is ample, bartenders are friendly and cool. It's a fun environment for a quick nip or an evening-long chat. The "one star" I omitted, keeping this place from a perfect score, is because they offer only frozen pizza and popcorn if you get the munchies.
