The first time was September 13, 2021; the ending stages of COVID so customers were not allowed in the shop. I ended up drinking coffee outside with three local gentlemen; one of the them was Larry. He is an owner and a Marine Veteran. We had some good laughs and I learned a lot about Banner Elk and the surrounding area. After visiting Fred and Larry's Coffee the first time, I realized I wanted to make exploring local coffee shops a part of my life; and here I am almost 500 coffee shops later. On my second trip I enjoyed a cortado while relaxing on Fred and Larry's big comfy leather couch. The barista was super friendly. She is definitely an incredible asset to the shop. Thank you Fred and Larry for making delicious coffee and providing a relaxing setting to meet new people and dream up new adventures in life. Enjoying life one cortado at a time!

On our first visit to Morganton we were looking for a lunch place as it was early afternoon. We…read morewanted something quick and easy so that's why Blackbox Sandwiches caught our attention. It's in a tiny strip center on the way out of town heading to I-40 and from the outside seems like a very generic shop. There was no one else there, as we were late in the lunch window. We were greeted instantly, and from there every interaction with the team was very engaging. Even the people preparing the food interacted with us to ask how things were as our meal went along. Very personable. Let's get to the food. I opted for their special of the day, which was The Shawarma pita sandwich. I'm including a picture of its description and of the sandwich itself. My wife ordered the Kaleidoscope, which is a vegetarian sandwich, but she went with their option to have it served as a salad, which meant it was in a bowl and on a bed of seasonal greens and topped with lemony garbanzos. The Kaleidoscope also boasts kale, red wine shrooms, crunchy house pickle, caramelized onions, and an herb green sauce. It was a flavor explosion. Everything blending unbelievably well. The dish showed creativity not only in the mix of ingredients, but the presentation as well. I'm sure it would've been a great sandwich, but it was killer as a salad. My special of the day, The Shawarma Greek pita was wonderful. Everything I love about Greek food and spices all neatly put together in a tasty pita sandwich. I opted for it to be "herby"rather than spicy and it was a beautiful blend of flavors. Blackbox was surprising for its food quality and tremendous customer service in a non-descript setting with paper plates and cans of soda. We would absolutely recommend it. There are some tables where you can eat on site or it appears many people takeout. This is a gem. Try it!
