I have a brand new reason to shop at DSW Union Square. Actually 2 reasons. I shopped at DSW Union Square a long time ago. The energy wasn't negative, but it wasn't positive. Nothing made me really want to keep shopping there...after all there's so many options online, right? Shopping is an experience, and the experience several years ago was...how do you say it...blah. Well that changed today. I went in looking for sneakers because I'm a personal trainer and needed some new shoes. I didn't see exactly what I wanted, so I saw a cool water bottle and decided to buy that. I'm always looking for cool new ways to meet my daily water quota. I was online not even 10 seconds when I heard a lovely voice say' "I'll be right with you." It wasn't what she said. It was how she said it. She was so polite...almost melodic. You wouldn't think she had to deal with the unpredictable and chaotic customers that can be a very real part of union square environment. She was so professional and...wait for it...PLEASANT. Her disposition was so nice. She put some items in their proper place to keep the store tidy and help costumers find where everything is and glided over to the register and asked me to come over so she could help me. It was a breath of fresh air to interact with someone so nice, understanding (she didn't want me to wait on line), professional, and personable. It was an amazing customer service experience. Our conversation was great, all while she took care of my transaction. It was more than a transaction. I know the next time I come to DSW Union Square 14th street, Letitia Budd and her amazing energy will be there. There will be a friendly and knowledgeable face to help me. Then the 2nd part of the wonderful experience happened. I wanted to write about Letitia Budd (great humans who happen to be great professionals should be acknowledged) so she gave me the information and the CEO Justin was helping another associate. Justin was so happy to hear that one of the associate was receiving a compliment. You would've thought the compliment was for Justin, but that is how supportive of the associates Justin is. They say "corruption" trickles down, but in the case of DSW Union Square great energy and positive vibes trickle down and circulate amongst the staff. Justin has the energy, support , and interpersonal skills that you don't see in managers in many stores. The rapport amongst the team is contagious. I look forward to shopping in person at his location and not online. Whoever is doing the recruiting, keep up the great work. I can't wait until the Nike sneakers come in next month because I want to invest in a few pairs for me and my little girl, and DSW Union square is where I want to go. I think this the worst DSW location I've ever stepped foot in (pun unintended). I've managed to avoid it ever since my first visit there shortly after the location opened many years ago. Recently, I had to go in to find a pair of warm, winter boots for the frigid temperatures. Almost every style was out of size 6 thru 7; I was only able to find sizes 8, 9, and 10 in most of the styles. After an hour of browsing all of the winter boots and trying on multiple pairs, I finally settled on one because there was one pair left in my size. Unfortunately, there was a dark stain in the suede. I tried to wipe it off with my scarf but it clearly required a cleanser. When I took it up to the register, the cashier offered a 5% discount after checking with the manager. I did the math in my head and that came up to less than $6, definitely not enough to cover a cleaning. I continued to push for more and she brought the manager to speak with me. The manager basically told me to take it or leave it. After spending an hour in the store, I was hesitant to walk away, but I knew if I didn't leave then and there I would have started screaming and cursing. Used to have a great men's selection. It's still okay, but seems smaller. Nonetheless a decent selection. Went today to buy three shoes with a coupon. Was told at the register that the coupon didn't apply for two of the shoes in my selection. I noted the fine print mentioned nothing about that, but the cashier said the DSW website could tell me which shoes were included in the discount. Instead, I went home and called in my order to the DSW hotline and was able to get my coupon honored. That's $200 this store turned away. Brick and mortar businesses are dying for many reasons, and everyone wants to blame COVID, but poor customer service and bad businesses practices need to be considered too. read more

I've never had a bad experience coming here- the store associates are helpful and showed me to where the shoes I want are.They have great clearance section in along the back wall organized according to sized and priced using a color coded label system. The men's shoes are more to the left when you enter followed by women's sneakers, work shoes, boots, sandals, and more dressy shoes. I always get my converse sneakers here and I find some cute and quirky patterns that I absolutely love and probably wouldn't have come across anywhere else. The return process is also super easy and no questions asked! I returned an online order here and although there is no specific returns/exchanges line (it's all one line with purchases and returns which can get really long despite having all registers open), the process was painless and I got my refund quickly. read more

DSW located in Union Square is in the same building that houses Burlington and Filenes. Kind of like a mini discount shopping mecca. Never shopped at DSW before but I needed some new gear and decided to give them a shot. Holy shoegasm Batman! I'm drowning in a sea of shoes! As soon as you walk in to this huge shoe store all you view are footwear as far as the eye can see. Aisles and aisles of shoes, mens, ladies, casual and dress shoes, boots, sandals, sneakers, running kicks, etc. Socks, belts, and accessories too. From top designer labels to the little knowns to the unknowns. Prices run from expensive to moderate, and even some on super "let's get rid of this crap" clearance racks. Dig and hunt for decent sales. As I find with places like this they sometimes don't have a shoe in the size you need, but there is usually something else in stock to choose from. If not, just go back a week or two later as inventory is restocked or turns over. I scored two fly pairs of brand label shoes at a good price. Cause I'm fresh like that. read more

Buying shoes at retail locations is quite a challenge. You could stick with department stores, or you could venture out to the likes of DSW, David Z, and others. I conjure up images of large suburban stores when at the DSW locations at Union Square and Battery Park. Clearly space is not at a premium here. I think this store format is doomed for failure in Manhattan, unless the prices are hiked up to cover for the space. I don't find the variety or the prices to be particularly attractive at DSW. Most of the styles are tired and boring, maybe with the exception of designer women's shoes (that I am not qualified to comment on). Good selection but they're actively trying to scare away customers. Only time staff talks to you is ask you if you're a VIP member or to get your phone and email. Check out is a nightmare because of this. Cashiers barking "VIP?" or "phone #" at you. I guess every store wants to make themselves into a credit card company that does ___ instead of just a ____ company. Rather depressing when you go to spend $400 and get told you have to wait on the longer line because you're not VIP, and then get attitude from a cashier because you don't want to give your email. A "hello" would be nice. Asking me if I'd benefit at all from whatever program or credit card or loyalty program would also help. Do they not grasp we are real people who don't hand out our contact info to anyone, let alone a store I might have gone to every few years? Was with a friend shopping here at DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse. What a huge selection of shoes. The sales associate by the name of Dahl (Dahlia) was very knowledgeable on shoes and even brought a pair and recommended several designers to try on. My friend was undecided with so many shoes to choose from which can be overwhelming for the most part. She then went to help another customer and came back to see how we were doing. Now, that is great customer service. My friend finally got two pairs of shoes. The checkout line moved quickly even though there was a long line to begin with. I can't speak for the selection, because the service it provides is one of the worst ones I have ever witnessed. I have been here a few times and the lines are always ridiculously long and go by SO SLOWLY even though they have so many people working the register. It's confusing - you'd think only two people are working the register at that pace. But the true reason for the one star rating: they have the worst security cameras known to mankind. I was trying on shoes with my wallet next to me. When I went to go put the shoe box back, I came back to wear I was sitting...literally 2 feet away (so no I wasn't stupid enough to leave my stuff unattended) and my wallet was misplaced. As I suspected, all the cash was gone. I immediately told staff and what they told me was EVEN THOUGH there was a security camera directly above where I was sitting, the camera was only able to capture me going into the aisle. I asked if there was another camera that could have captured where I was sitting and where the person stole from me, but apparently they are too cheap to install a competent security system. All I got was some attitude and a "sorry" from someone working there. Moral of the story: don't come here if you value your belongings. read more

I didn't like the fact that I was trying on shoes on the aisle and one of your costumers service screamed from a crossed the way you can't try shoes on in the aisle. I'm all about rules and don't mind following them but their has the be a better way to let your costumers know that this is know your rule. This probably has the best selection of discounted designer footwear. I'm talking $200-$300 off normally priced footwear from the likes of UGG, Loeffler Randall and Frye. I saw all these names and more. I didn't find what I was looking for, but chances are if you stop in often, you'll find stuff for day-to-day wear, along with decent running shoes, sandals and ankle boots. It's super messy after 2pm, and rarely do they ever have size 7.5 or 8 in mens dress shoes. From Fendi to Payless from Manolo's to Old Navy $1 flip flops...I got them and DSW feeds into my sickness. The floor sales people are very nice and always ask to assist. Some are like hawks and try to get you to sign up for their rewards program. Naturally, I was sucked into the vortex and signed away to get my points account activated (shocked? I'm not). It's a bit overwhelming at first because you're not sure where to exactly start out, and I also think the shoes should be organized by designer. If time = money than the time you'll spend here trying to find something will end up negating the savings that could be had. I feel like the ratio of how many times I go in vs. the number of times I actually purchase something from DSW is actually really bad. DSW is one of those stores that seem great on paper (tons of shoes slashed from original prices? boots? heels? sneakers? anything you want here?!), but when you go in, you had such high hopes that most of the time you walk out utterly disappointed. Oh, wait, that's just me, does anyone else feel this way? The shopping experience here is rarely fun. Union Square is one of those areas that's just crowded no matter when you go, and DSW is no exception. The aisles are plenty but extremely narrow, so beware of the ladies carrying those humongous bags. Yeah, most of the times they won't say sorry to you if they run into you... Shopping experience aside, let's take a look at the shoes. The clearance rack in the back has the best prices, but they're so picked over. I used to have better luck with the DSW in Pittsburgh, but maybe that's because the fashionistas don't raid DSW as much as they raid the one here in Manhattan. On the regular price floor, I've seen a lot of really cute shoes, some even "designer" brand (Michael Kors, Tahari, BCBG, etc.). But I usually don't pick up anything from here due to a) still being too expensive (I see on average $50 for shoes and heels, $120+ for boots), or b) they don't have my size. Tragic... The rewards program is pretty nice. If you shop a lot, expect $10 rewards a lot (forgot the exact amount you must accrue). Shoes, shoes galore! For reasonably priced shoes, I have been venturing here for several years to replinish my shoe wardrobe pending season changes. It has been a ongoing battle of love for hitting the right shoe style/size/price vs. hate for the wrong shoe style/size/high heaven price for many years. This location sits conviently at 14th Street Union Square and is easily accessible via mass transit. It is somewhat organize, but not fully stock with all whole shoe sizes especially half sizes. Lapin and I came here recently to look for new dressy shoes for him. I have been here before but this was his first visit. It didn't take long for him to go through the small couple of aisles they have dedicated for men's shoes. In the end, we weren't able to find anything for him but I found a cute pair of flats for $64ish in the clearance section. The lines are usually long during lunch time, after work, and during the weekends. But occasionally, they do have employees walking around doing express checkout for credit/debit card holders. The selection is very large and expansive. There may be a lot of goods, but the goods aren't great. Hell, they aren't even good. I came here to buy a pair of crappy sandals for cheap that I could wear to a music festival and then throw out. The array and selection of sandals, while there were a lot, were all the same. Seriously, it was like the same sandal 10 times at different price points. Many of which were above $50. This isn't nordstroms. Maybe I'm unaware of the purpose of this store, but I thought it was like a cheap bargain basement type place. Are people really coming here to buy Michael Kors sandals??? It never fails that when i see those three beatiful letters that I march my semi broke behind into the store and gawk at all the pretty little things. i almost always find something and if im alone, im totally buying them, but if i have a friend with me, they usually talk me out of my purchase (and they call themselves my friends! ha!) "Monique, you already have black peep toe pumps" "but THESE pumps have a bow; they are CLEARLY different!" I love the size of this store. This store is so so at best. The set up is typical of DSW - rows and rows of shoes. It is pretty clean. It has a decent selection of mid-priced shoes. They tend to have extremely small or very large sized shoes. I find that most of DSW shoes appear to be seconds. I never got a pair that didn't hurt me or fit correctly. I usually try to avoid this store. A sale at Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor or Nordstrom is better than this store. read more

I'm not really a shoe person {insert shocked face here}. But when I find myself in need of a new pair of shoes I like that I can pop into DSW and they have everything I need. Flats? Like two aisles worth. And in every color. Nude pumps for work? Yup. Gold sandals for that summer wedding? Got it. Black Converse for kickin' it on the city streets? Done. I've heard some say they don't like this location. Yes, Union Square is... well, chaotic, especially during lunch time and especially with Whole Foods right down stairs. But I find that if you can make your way through the square and up the escalator to DSW some of your troubles disappear. The ShoeLover/employees have always been helpful and willing to search the aisles with you for that pair you think you saw online. And the check-out/returns always seem to go smoothly.
