I see her consistently every six weeks, and the results are always exactly what I want. What I appreciate most is that she truly listens and does exactly what you ask--which, surprisingly, hasn't always been my experience with other stylists. She's efficient, fun to talk to, and very respectful of your time. Most importantly, she gets my color right. I prefer a light brown, and with other hairdressers my hair has often ended up way too dark--almost black. That has never happened with her. I had gone here 5 years ago and then stopped going because I was traveling back home at the time. However, I decided to visit again recently and what started as a pleasant visit quickly turned into a very uncomfortable political conversation. She was trying to figure out what political view I was while I was making an effort to not engage in thIs type of conversation at all. There was even a comment made during it where she stated "she lost respect for friends who voted for the other person". Honestly, it's rare I get time to myself with 3 children -- and finally when I did I had to hear about politics and who you should/shouldn't vote for. ‍ In addition -- It's definitely shorter than I wanted -- which wouldn't bother me if it was cut properly, however it was over texturized and doesn't blend on the side. My hair had been mutilated by a previous hair dresser and was growing in weird, the ends were extremely dry and unhealthy (but the rest of my hair was not), and it just looked choppy and as if a 5 year old just went crazy with a pair of scissors. It's a shame that some good reviews for Dawn have been filtered due to users being first time or novice Yelpers, bit I hope mine will "stick". While I didn't have Dawn cut my hair during her previous gig, I did observe her doing some nice work there, and when my colorist Jason (who has a suite in the same complex as Dawn) recommended her, I agreed to have her do my cut. She did a great job! She took the time to listen to what I wanted and asked questions about what products I used, my wash schedule, what kind of length I wanted etc. Her technique and "chairside manner" are excellent. When she was finished, she applied some styling paste and we tried a couple of things to see what looked best. Her suite is warmly lit and inviting, making it a more relaxing experience than some of the big salons that have super bright lights. I have very thick, wavy hair, and Dawn was able to give me a PERFECT stacked, sleek, A-line bob on my first visit. She is a great listener and very good at taking any concerns or requests seriously. I normally have to beg and plead for stylists to thin out my hair enough, and they are typically reluctant to do so. Not Dawn--once she got started she was on a mission to properly texturize my hair and I knew I was in good hands. Usually after coming home from the salon, I can find several issues or something I don't like about the cut. I tried Dawn today for a much-needed haircut based on her Yelp reviews and her proximity to my home, and I'm very glad I did! I was bored with my long, uninteresting hair and ready for a change. As a photographer, I needed a new do that would still be long enough for all of my hair to be easily tied back out of the way of my lens. I brought in a photo of a long bob cut that I liked, and Dawn made some suggestions for changes that would work better with my low maintenance hair habits (I'm lazy with my hair, to say the least) and face shape and would be a bit more interesting overall. I trusted her expertise, and she crafted a very flattering cut. I'll definitely be back! The salon is in the same building as DSW & Charming Charlie's, but on the other side of the building. Dawn did a great job with my hair. I try to avoid salons as much as possible because the stylist always messes up my cut, usually because I tell them to cut my hair dry, not wet and they pull the "trust me, I know what I'm doing" card and F it all up. Not Dawn; she listens and she's even fun to talk to! I opted for the basic stuff: a wash, blow-dry, and a trim to just below the shoulders and my hair looked and felt amazing. The only tricky thing is finding Dawn's studio. The map takes you to the right building but reading the suite number, you'd think it was on the 1st floor and you were in the wrong place but nope! Enter the door at the top of the stairs and weave your way past all the salons, spas, etc. until you find Dawn's door. Not knowing this, you might end up doing what I did which was go into that building 3 times and walking out thinking you're in the wrong place and end up being late for your appointment. read more

Horrible experience . I got lost getting there (Stupid map quest). Called dawn to tell her I was running late (5min) She asks me then if I have "thick hair". I wanted to cut my bob back into a pixie cut, and I wasn't willing to go all the way down into Dallas from McKinney to do so, so I started looking closer to home. I walked around Watters Creek a bit trying to figure out how to find the place, so let me save you 10 minutes and tell you to park on the southeast side of Watters Creek, and DS Hair Studio is inside the Mattison Salon Suites (Mattison sign is visible from 75). I passed up on the Groupons and also tried Dawn due to the Yelp reviews and I'm so glad I did! I'm an (ahem) "older" woman but I don't like looking like one ... I prefer trendy, non-coiffed do's and Dawn did not let me down. I also have thinning hair, and after showing her what I was wanting, she made some very good suggestions to make sure I got the look I wanted, which was a tad difficult considering what she had to work with. I found Dawn just by chance online. She rents a small studio in Mattison Avenue Salon Suites in Watters Creek in Allen. Her prices are reasonable, and she offers convenient booking online. Now onto the cut...good cut, but not what I had asked for. I asked for the same cut/style I already had, but just shorter. And because she didn't continue my layers throughout, I was left with a sort of "alien head." It took months for the layers to blend enough to look decent. I guess that the best way I could put it is that finding DS Hair Studio was like finding your favorite coffee shop. It's comfortable, quiet, and accommodating. The stylist, Dawn, takes her work very seriously. This was something that I still feel can only be appreciated by watching the level of intensity and focus in her eyes when she is cutting someone else's hair. I had the opportunity to witness this when I accompanied a friend of mine while they were getting their hair cut by her. I had been to a few nice places before; high dollar spots that sported atmosphere, but stylists that had about as much passion for their work as someone trimming hedges. It maybe a little confusing of the location, it is in the Watter's Creek mall behind the Red Mango inside the Mattison Avenue Salon suite & spa. This beautician is excellent at her craft.This was my all time best cut. I described what I wanted and she delivered. I said keep it long, funky, choppy and edgy - she did exactly that. Getting here was a little challenging. You have to enter the building from the back, go up some stairs, find a door (I didn't see a sign), then enter.
