Nashville has the best events during Christmas and one in particular is the Christmas Tea inside the Hermitage Hotel at the Capitol Grille. Things you need to know: 1. Make reservations (this is a busy venue and walk-ins have difficulty finding spaces) 2. They have complimentary valet parking for this event. Bring your ticket to the check in desk and they can stamp it for you when you arrive. 3. The tea is located in the mezzanine area of the hotel which is flooded with natural light and flanked by an enormous Christmas tree for Insta worthy pics. (A couple was filming when we were there.) 4. For $75 per person (and an automatic tip added at the end), see this as a once-a-year splurge with a few of your friends and start a new Nashville tradition. read more

Upon arrival to Capitol Grille we were a bit confused thinking it was the franchise. However we were pleasantly surprised as our waiter explained the history of the restaurant. As the staff bustled around like anger honey bees changing all table linens with each turnover, I couldn't help but notice the Matre'd had a bulge in his pants the size of an eggplant. His pants were tighter than my father's wallet at a school fundraiser. His jacket looked like something found in the kids section of a department store and I'm sure the entire look was very European but I couldn't get past the battle of the bulge. Need less to say this kept us entertained the entire evening.. The salads come from Their own farm and we're fresh and delish. My steak was cooked perfectly but the star of the dinner was the dessert beigne with blueberry compote and lemon buttercream ice cream was amazing. read more

Charming, fun & beautiful afternoon tea! All six of us were delighted with our afternoon "Spillin' Tea with Draper James" at the Hermitage. The setting was lovely, and we appreciated that each place setting had a unique tea cup and saucer. Our tea sandwiches, scones and desserts were wonderful, and the dietary needs of the two pregnant members of our party were meticulously and deliciously accommodated. We all agreed that our waiter, Tommy, was a particularly charming feature of the afternoon! He was sweet and helpful in doing his real job, and most gracious about taking photos for us and filling us in on the unique history of the hotel. read more

The Oak Room Bar in the restaurant has a lot of history. It was a men's only bar and you can see the little window where women could get their drinks. The bar has a masculine style and the Whiskey selection will not disappoint! The bartenders know how to pour a mean Manhattan. The Italian Vermouth added a tasty spice. Now once you break the seal men and women a like must check out the bathroom. It's all Art Deco and includes a shoe shine stand. The Caesar salad was fresh and delish! We followed up with a medium rare ribeye which was ok (I am a steak snob coming from the Midwest). However, they raise their own beef which I like. You must order the baked Mac and Cheese. Had dinner here tonight before a show at TPAC across the street. Service was a little slooooooow at first, took a while to actually order. Once we ordered though everything went smoothly. Started w some deviled eggs which were delicious - basic deviled eggs, but tasty for sure. For dinnner I actually ate meat! They didn't have a fish dish I wanted so I had my first steak in a year. It was pretty good! Cooked perfectly and definitely a quality piece of meat. Sides were smashed potatoes (YUM) and broccolini (ALSO YUM), both bathed in butter and we appreciated it. Crowd in here was older (white haired honestly) and mostly wearing suits... kind of a little stuffy. It wasn't busy either for a Saturday night. The petite filet was magnificent, medium rare: tall, tender, buttery, and succulent. Garnished with a carrot and a whole, slender, crunchy okra, both delightfully pickled. CG has 200 beef cattle on their own farm. Steak is a must here. I chose the Argentinian Malbec to accompany the beef; it was stellar. Dustin, my waiter served impeccably. The bread was not impressive. More like a biscuit. I know this is the south. I grew up in the south but I've lived in the northeast too long. I like a hearty bread, crusty, fighting for its place as a table starter. I was excited with Dustin's description of the classic Caesar, however it was a little long on the leafy, chewy parts of the romaine, which if blended with the more tender, light and crunchy portions, makes for a delightful salad. Caesar dressing - just the right amount of white anchovies, but too thick. Do order the mac'n cheese, a generous side suitable for sharing. read more

Otherwise, whole vibe is cold, dated and unwelcoming not in a historic, charming way. Drinks were good. But nothing special. Especially for the price. Food was mediocre at best. Had the beet salad that was dusted with maybe a quarter ounce at most of goat cheese. Underdressed, underwhelming. It's my favorite salad and my friend and I didn't even bother to finish. Fried green tomatoes. Where are the tomatoes? Giant scoop of pimento cheese and a tiny little sliver of overcooked green tomatoes. Very one note. Scallops were undercooked and WAY too expensive. Lasagna was all beschamelle (spelling?) sauce and no contents. My friend and I both left with major stomach aches and had to end the night early. However, the burger I had was overcooked and the onion bisque tasted bland. Still, the ambiance, okay food, and historic nature of this establishment make it worth a visit in my book. Note: The butter for your bread will be a bit salty because they put some kind of salt crystals in it. And yes, the men's bathroom is very nice... but it may be mildly overhyped. read more

We REALLY wanted to love this restaurant. We have great memories of the Charleston Grille a few years ago and just couldn't shake the feeling that Capitol Grille would be another elegant, southern restaurant with great atmosphere. Unfortunately we were wrong. The first thing that struck us was the poor lighting, which is without a doubt the single most important factor when designing a restaurant. Eating here felt like being in an upscale cafeteria or cruise ship, completely devoid of character. My husband, who admittedly is quite fussy about his martinis, was disappointed when his was served in a champagne glass. We weren't super hungry so we skipped the apps and dessert and just ordered entrees, shrimp and grits for him and mussels for me. No complaints about the food, and the service was fine, but neither could make up for the lack of atmosphere. If they warm up the space with better lighting, change the tablecloths to white, paint the ceilings a richer color and perhaps throw in a piano player, then maybe they will be a restaurant worthy of emptying your wallet over. read more

They do not open for dinner until 5, and when we showed up at 5:15, we were the first group for the night on a Thursday night. Around 6, another table arrived. It was a bit peculiar to be the only people dining there for such a long amount of time but the service was impeccable- with 3 waiters to ourselves, and all very attentive, though not overly friendly. The onion bisque was delectable, with a sweet and savory base and melt-in-your-mouth bread, crunchy bacon bits, and scallions. And our entrees were good. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits was large and fresh. Their scones were dry, however, even with the whipped butter on them. Overall, the atmosphere is classy, with 1920s music playing and fresh flowers on each table. The waiters pull your chairs out here... I would wear a dressy outfit. read more

This place has been on my Nashville bucket list for years and now it's not. We visited the Grille for brunch and we started out in a positive mind frame as we really wanted to like this place but... It was terrible. Oysters served on corn kernels without any fixings, dry eggs, bland cheese. Sugar spread trying to pass as fruit spread. Carbs took center stage and the food wasn't even pretty. My husband ordered an egg sandwich with tomato gravy but when it arrived it was bone dry. We inquired and we were told that it did have gravy on it but not much because their tomato gravy was so strong. My suggestion to this place is to use some strong flavors. Don't be afraid! I ordered the steak medium rare Pittsburgh style and they simply pan-seared a 1 inch piece of steak (I could have done this myself. I've had better steaks at chain restaurants and charging $60 for this "amazing" steak is simply deceiving. If you go to this restaurant, stick to the appetizers and skip the steaks. read more

Probably the best brunch I've ever had! My sorority sisters and I were in Nashville for an annual get together and wanted to do something fancy and Girly. Since the hotel no longer offers afternoon tea we donned our big hats for the champagne brunch. Unlimited mimosas y'all! I tested the policy and had 6, which was worth the price alone. Brunch a a three course affair with a few options for each course, plus baskets of biscuits. Between this and the mimosas we were STUFFED! Get the onion soup, it's life changing good and comes with a mini Brie grilled cheese. Being a little tipsy and perhaps obnoxious tourists we got our waiter to take tons of photos of us and tour us around. He was sooooo nice to us, I'm posting a pic of our group with him so he gets the props he deserves. As a side note, I've dined upstairs before when the governor was inaugurated and was on my best behavior so can attest to the food being legitimately good - it's not just the mimosas talking. Any place that can serve delicious food at a banquet is a winner in my book. read more

My boss treated me to a belated birthday lunch at Capitol Grille and I absolutely loved it! The place is underground (sort of makes me think of The Sopranos), it's located under the Hermitage Hotel. The decor is ornate with lots of ugly crown molding and gold fixtures, with over sized chairs and tables, it's dimly lit and reminds me vaguely of the Bellagio in Vegas. They have black and white pictures of Nashville and Farm Glen Leven on the walls. That's the thing about Capitol Grille it's a farm to table spot (most of their menu is locally and regionally sourced) but you're eating it in a totally not Nashville environment! No hipster influence to be seen in this place, no trendy mason jars or cute bandana napkins or reclaimed wood tables, this is totally different and classy in a tacky sort of way but it's great! They have a business lunch special which in my opinion for the quality food and the quantity is an absurd deal! For $24 I got a seasonal tomato salad and a gigantic sandwich and crispy fries. I could only eat half the sandwich and a handful of french fries, which were freaking yummy by the way. I had The Club sandwich, think upscale diner food, you're favorite sandwich but done fancy, holy crap it was good. My boss had the Pastrami, which was also excellent. Also I sampled her gigantic Caesar salad plate and found the dressing to be delish!!!!!!!! Also the service was excellent, no complaints whatsoever! My next trip will definitely be a happy hour date with the boyfriend at the Oak Bar inside Captiol Grille, I believe they serve food and excellent drinks! Capitol Grille sets itself up for a disappointing meal. The hermitage hotel in Nashville has one of the nicest lobby's in the country. It's classy, ornate and charming. Therefore, when you walk into the restaurant your are expecting to be blown away. I obviously was not. The food was bland and lacked flavor. I had a Caesar salad as a appetizer which I don't think had any dressing on it. My entree was fine. Not good or bad. The staff was very attentive and kind, but it didn't make up for the average food. It was not a cheap Restaurant, but I actually thought it would be more expensive. I've had worst meals, but I've also had better. read more

Capitol Grille has been on my wishlist for a while, but the night I had my first meal there it was almost unintentional! We were going to see Kinky Boots at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and we needed to grab dinner first. I suggested we try the Oak Bar at the Hermitage Hotel less than a block from the theater, since they share a kitchen with the upscale restaurant. Well, it turns out EVERYONE had the same idea, so the bar was jam-packed while the restaurant was wide open. In addition, the show was starting 30 minutes earlier than usual, so we had just over an hour to eat. What are two hungry girls to do? Sit down to a fancy meal at the Capitol Grille, of course. Our server knew we had a timeline, but that doesn't mean he skimped on service! Everything was so professional and formal. We started the meal off with wine; there was a great selection, and my cabernet was delicious. First off, I must compliment their bread basket. I was famished, and they brought out a basket with three types of delicious, warm bread. It was yummy! The little rolls were my favorite, because they reminded me of the bread used for Chick-fil-a Chick-n-Minis. (I'm so fancy... can't you taste this gold?) I know my last restaurant review featured a burger, but I swear I don't just eat burgers all the time!!! In this case, I felt a little guilty splurging on steak after splurging at Kayne Prime just a week earlier, so I decided I would sample the beef by choosing the more affordably-priced burger and fries. I added a fried egg, because that's what I always do when given the option with my burger. (I'm thinking of starting to order my burgers "à cheval" in the French style, so it sounds fancier.) The burger was delicious. The meat quality was noticeably excellent, and it was prepared perfectly. Very, very tasty! I'd put it on par with the classic burgers at some of the better burger places in Nashville. I'd like to come back for a fancy date night someday. read more

I had a reservation booked at the Hermitage for tea... this reservation was made 1 month in advance (on October 21, in fact). I received an email notification of the cancellation and then a voicemail stating that my reservation would be cancelled, as there was some sort of glitch in OpenTable and they had overbooked. Unfortunately, they didn't realize this until 48 hours before our reservation. When I called to ask if there was any ability to get in for the weekend (as we had folks flying in for birthday celebrations), I was told there would be no accommodation or attempt to help, as they were booked through the end of the year. I will not, in future, ever book a reservation here... I didn't even get the chance to sit down before experiencing terrible customer service. Cancelling 36-48 hours before the reservation and then notifying the customer is not the way to win folks over. read more

My friend recommended the Hermitage as a "must see" on my weekend away in Nashville. Upon checking out the Capitol Grille's menu online, I felt hesitant to spend our Saturday evening here for dinner (we were only in Nashville for a weekend). I'm a vegetarian and they only offered one meatless entrée. Just one. What if the "winter vegetable entrée" for $25 sucked? There was no description on the menu, so my husband called to inquire about it. The woman who answered the phone didn't sell him on the food at all. She said the veggie entrée was just that -- a plate of steamed veggies. Doesn't sound too exciting, eh? It gets better. We decide to go there for afternoon tea instead (5 stars all the way!). As we were waiting for our table, we talked to a wonderful hostess about our dinner dilemma - is this place worth coming to for a plate of steamed veggies? She said absolutely yes because the truffle mac n cheese alone is OUT OF THIS WORLD! She then told us that the head chef has a staff meeting at 4pm each day to discuss dinner and that she would mention that a vegetarian would be dining with them that evening to see if he could make me something special, sans mushrooms. Fantastic! We came back that night and had one of the best meals of our lives. Complimentary salmon sprinkled with a candied ginger - melt in your mouth amazing! My hubby got the prime cap of beef. I got a wonderful vegetable plate with a side of fried green tomatoes and the best truffle mac n cheese of my life (see photo of my plate before I dived in). We were purring over how delicious the food was. Mmmmm after mmmmmm after mmmmmmmm. DELICIOUS! Needless to say, the decor was absolutely stunning. Can't believe I have not reviewed one of my favorite restaurants in America! First off give your self ample time before or after the meal to explore the art deco mens bathroom, the lobby, the gift shop, and the grandeur of the Hermitage Hotel. Don't worry about parking either, free valet for 2 hours for dining patrons! Now, you are downstairs, you have been seated. If you like iced tea, well this is a treat, it comes with a little pitcher of simple syrup! If you enjoy an old-fashioned, well give yourself a few minutes to pick a bourbon. Feeling fancy? They have my fave champagne in the 375ml bottle. Moet and Chandon Imperial. You must try the onion bisque. It is the most decadent and unusual soup. Velvety and luxe. It's like a warm blanket of cream and onions. My mother had the beef broth which she said was outstanding. Coming from a woman who makes her own beef barley soup this is high praise. The garlicky grits are a wonderful addition to any meal as well! On a last trip we had the pork dish which was outstanding. If you are between to dishes, simply ask your server. I've never been steered in the wrong direction by any of them! Same room for desert the coconut cake and their in house ice cream and sorbets are phenomenal. Once I had popcorn ice cream! On a recent trip birch beer sorbet. For lunch, for dinner, for a fine experience while in Nashville when you have grown sick of heavy southern food, come to the Capitol Grille! read more

Nice enough hotel restaurant, but not a destination restaurant. It probably wasn't a good move to eat at Capitol Grille the night after eating at Kayne Prime, but that's how things went. Service was good. Decor was formal and dated. But if you are coming here, pop into the Hermitage Hotel's lobby, which is stunning. I started with the oysters. They were fine, but nothing special. I liked that we were given the choice of accoutrements. The yuzu vinaigrette was good. I had the brisket, which according to the waiter is braised for up to 24 hours. It was very flavorful, but it was a little dry. I really liked the cauliflower with morel mushrooms. For dessert, we all shared the chocolate cake. It was very rich and decadent. read more

The servers were amazing but I can't say the same for the food at this location. We ordered medium rare steaks and when it came out it was cool, had no flavor and super thin. It looked like what I'd envision if you boiled a steak then threw it in a microwave but left it on the counter for hours bc you were sad you were going to have to eat it. We were on an eight day trip from Memphis to Gatlinburg and were in Nashville for only one night, which was unfortunate indeed (we Look forward to returning!). Originally we had a reservation at Hemingway's but after an e-mail exchange with a very nice concierge, we took her advice and opted for the Capitol Grille. We regretted our decision, as our experience was disappointing. perhaps our expectations were too high. My wife and I shared a Caesar Salad, which was certainly good, but not memorable in any way. She opted for the Garden Pasta, which was very fresh and much to her liking. I opted for the filet and asked for a Blue Cheese topping. The steak was well prepared but not as flavorful as expected. The Blue cheese seemed to be an after thought, sprinkled on and not melted as had been requested. I was also bothered by what I could only describe as "char" on the steak. I am not referring to the black grill marks or the char that normally occurs in cooking a fine steak. I refer to char from the grill, as if the grill had not been properly cleaned after grilling of the previous steak. The char was very fine and added an undesirable 'grittiness' to the steak. (this was noticed only on the last several bites of the steak). I have seen the other reviews on this restaurant and I fully hoped it would live up to those reviews, but I am sorry to say for us, it was a 2.5-3 star experience, when we hoped for 4 or better. read more

Came to celebrate our anniversary. Lovely decor. Friendly staff. So on to the food. Started with the bone marrow, was disappointing. It was over cooked, no lovely meat butter. The saving grace was the beech mushrooms! We both had the 10oz fillet which was delicious. You must have the creamed corn as a side! It was ridiculously yummy!! So now as to why just three stars. The only thing they did "special" for us (anniversary celebration remember) the hostess placed rose petals on the table. In a previous review others received macaroons and fruit. Sadly we did not. I've only dined here once, and as that was a time-constrained business dinner, I'll keep this brief for now, and will update should I return. I enjoyed my filet, which was perfectly tender and cooked precisely to order. The sides are not served family-style, but are rather large individual portions that could likely satisfy two diners. I had the asparagus, which was good, though not best-ever. We didn't have time for dessert, coffee, or after-dinner drinks, so can't comment on that. Not to be mistaken for the chain of Capital Grille steakhouses that are out there- this Capitol Grille stands alone . . .with a menu of sustainable food items that are grown on a local farm mere miles from the restaurant. With a definite southern flair, the food is imaginative and interesting. Not being a southern girl, myself, some of the things that are on the menu are worth trying . . . .things like okra, hominy, pickled this and that, and cornbread puree . . .none of which is common on menus in other parts of the country. So imagine my delight in the Carolina flounder dish that I picked which was two small pieces of flounder atop a mix of okra, beans, peas, tomatoes, corn accompanied by some type of light sauce. Delightful and light. Good thing it was light for as a side I went with the truffled mac and cheese which was delicious with just the right amount of bread crumbs and cheese. Know before you go that portion sizes are not large, rather they are restrained. So if you are used to getting a huge plate of food this is not going to be the case here. Also know that the prices are steep as well- my fish entree was $34 with no sides. Add in a $7 side or two and you are quickly reminded that this is fine dining. And you gotta love a place that serves Jack Daniels ice cream for dessert. Yep. A small scoop, albeit, but it was delicious with just the right amount of flavor. The ambiance is classy, after all, this is The Hermitage, and the staff is welcoming, informed and well trained to make your evening an unforgettable experience. Definitely a great choice for before the theater or for a special occasion. Guess I'm going to have to go back as I never did learn what clabber cream was on the menu.
