Pulled Pork Sandwich
Jessica P.

This spot is new on Hull St. it's an out door space with great music and service. Tex knows how to smoke! We had the pulled pork, ostrich, ribs, and beef ribs. The beef rib and pulled pork were my favs. Go check it out!

We live an easy walk to the new location on the corner of John Rolfe and Ridgefield Parkway. Today we wanted to pick up lunch for our family since we all are home and working from home. I ordered a medium family meal which comes with 2lbs of meat, four pints of sides and either cornbread or potato rolls for sandwiches. We ended up getting 1 pound of pulled chicken, 1 pound of pulled pork, two pints of Mac and cheese because it's that good, potato salad and the southwest Cole slaw. We also got the rolls for sandwiches, Swayze sauce and the house sauce. For kicks we added a pound of rope sausage. So much food and so tasty! I've had all of their meats now and enjoy them all. The sides are also exceptional. My husband and I said we want to come and just have a meal there soon. I want to try their tacos. Anyway, we're lucky to have such good food right in our neighborhood. They have vegan options too so it's not just meat. I personally love portobello mushrooms so look forward to having a meatless Monday soon. Welcome to the neighborhood Deep Run Roadhouse and crew! We look forward to seeing you often.

Thanks to them as well for opening up their back room to fit all the girls. Great staff - very friendly. It's a smaller place. But that doesn't detract at all. Now the food. Insanely good. I had the brisket sandwich and it was full of meat and had onions and Cole slaw. Added on the sweet bbq and it was so good. People raved about the Cuban. The hush puppies were a fan favorite. The peanut butter pie and key lime pie were to die for. The Mac and cheese was excellent, as was the cowboy beans and potato salad. If I lived here it would be one of my favorite places to go. Go on in and hit this place if you are in the area!!

As we drove through Scott's Addition, the incredible smell coming from SMOHK caught our attention. We followed the aroma, stopped to try it, and ended up having a fantastic lunch. From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent. The gentleman at the front was extremely friendly and patiently explained all the meats, sauces, and side dishes to us. My mom and I shared a rib platter that came with two sides--we chose the coleslaw and sweet potatoes--and added four extra ribs. My nephew ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The food was excellent. The ribs were tender, flavorful, and delicious, and the sides were great too. My nephew and I spent most of the meal debating whether SMOHK was at the same level as ZZQ or even better. I personally thought it was better, and after I let him try one of my ribs, he was impressed and delighted too! Another big plus was being able to enjoy high-quality barbecue without standing in a huge line. At the end of our meal, the owner came over and talked with us. He was very warm and welcoming and showed us photos of the catering they offer. We were so impressed that we plan to order from SMOHK for our family Thanksgiving gathering. The entire check was about $80 for three people, including three drinks, tax, and tip. Considering the amount of food, the quality, and the excellent service, we felt it was well worth it. Great barbecue, genuinely kind people, and an overall memorable experience. We discovered SMOHK by accident, but we will definitely return!

But follow the smell of smoke into that little cut and you'll discover some seriously good BBQ. First and foremost, the food had me excited, but our interaction with the owner made the experience even better. Welcoming, funny, genuinely personable, and incredibly patient while walking us through the menu. That kind of hospitality matters, especially at a neighborhood BBQ joint, and it immediately made the place feel like somewhere you want to come back to. Now to the food. The Pork Belly Burnt Ends were the standout for me. Melt-in-your-mouth tender with that beautiful combination of smoke, sweetness, spice, and rich pork flavor. These alone are worth knowing this place exists. Definitely one of those hidden-gem dishes in RVA that deserves more attention. The brisket and pork ribs are absolutely worth a visit too -- smoky, flavorful, and exactly the kind of meats you want when you walk into a place with BBQ in the name. The sides held their own as well. The collard greens were properly seasoned and cooked just right, and the mac and cheese was rich, creamy, and delicious. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Then there are the sauces. SMOHK isn't just giving you the same three bottles you see at every BBQ spot. From the Smoked Apple BBQ sauce to the Gochujang BBQ sauce, there's a real range of flavors here that lets you take the meats in completely different directions. Traditional BBQ roots, but with enough creativity to make the place feel like its own thing. SMOHK is a different kind of BBQ joint -- tucked away, full of personality, creative without forgetting the fundamentals, and serving food that makes you glad you followed your nose. Don't blink when you're driving by. This one is worth finding.

The chef even made adaptations in my meal to make it vegan. The cauliflower steaks with rice were amazing. The spices were just right and had a good amount of heat. Our server was helpful and indulged a few questions we had about the menu. If I remember his name, I'll add it later. The energy here exudes soul food, including the soundtrack playing over the speakers. If you like Michael Jackson, which we do, you'll appreciate the vibe. I tried the bone-in pork chop within Hoppin' Johns (rice and beans), and my partner had the Fried Chicken with macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. She said her meal was fantastic, and I tried some of the mac and cheese; it was excellent. My pork chop was much better than the one I tried at the sister location in Short Pump. However, there were so many onions that I spent a lot of time painstakingly sorting those out with my fork. The meal was delicious, but the amount of onions certainly soured my experience. This is our second time here, and while I'm glad I tried the pork chop, I think I'll try something less oniony next time. I recommend Lillie Pearl to anyone who likes a well-curated southern food menu. The new location is beautifully decorated and would provide amazing photo opportunities for anyone planning to have an event here.

Our entrees were equally as tasty. I ordered the salmon and it was done well! My only personal preference would be to swap the green beans for the collards next time--the green beans just weren't cooked quite the way I prefer. That said, everything else was really enjoyable. Overall, a great meal at an equally great price. We were pleasantly surprised to walk out for under $65 without ordering drinks. Definitely felt like a great value, and we'd happily come back!

I got the Shorti Bowl, which is eggs and meat over cheese grits. It was good but I just wanted the cheese grits to commit a little harder to the cheese. The meat itself was good too, although it did feel a bit like a piece of meat had been plopped in the middle rather than everything really coming together as a dish. My husband got the sandwich with basically the same kind of meat, and somehow it was both a LOT of sandwich and not a lot of sandwich at the same time. It looked impressive as a Katz's-esque pile of meat, but once you actually got into it, it was mostly meat, bread and pickles. I kept expecting some sauce or another topping to show up and it just...didn't. Also a little unwieldy to eat, although I guess that's part of the territory when your sandwich is 70% meat. I think Lunch Supper sits in a funny middle ground between classic diner/brunch food and a more modern version of it. Nothing we had was bad, but for some of their more popular dishes I guess I expected a little more oomph if that makes sense (and yes I tried adding hot sauce). I'd still happily come back with friends, especially to sit outside. I just think I'd be coming back more for the vibes vs the food.
