I corresponded with them via phone and email for a while as we worked on setting a day and time for a trial lesson. My daughter had a blast with Sara and it was easy to see why. For starters, Sara has the voice of an angel (or as far as my daughter is concerned, a Disney Princess). So yeah.. trusted her skills implicitly, right off the bat. Then I noticed how supportive, loving and encouraging Sara is toward a healthy self esteem for her students. Constantly and consistently praising and if there is something that needs changing, Sara would praise what was done and then add "now why don't we try it like this, can you try it like this?" Sara is perfectly gentle in her approach. I love her teaching style especially for a little girl who (although loving), is as shy and timid as can be. I could go on and on about why this was so incredibly perfect of a fit for us, but I should have at least said enough to encourage you to give a trial lesson a shot.

I would never recommend it to anyone looking for a positive theatre environment. In my opinion, the company cares far more about money than the kids. There are fees for what feels like everything, and parents are expected to volunteer and help with almost everything they do. It never felt like enough unless you were giving them more time or more money. The building was also often very dusty, and it didn't always feel like the healthiest environment to be spending so many hours in. The favoritism was unbelievable. I watched the same people get opportunities over and over while others who worked just as hard were constantly overlooked. I was there for years and never got a role that reflected the amount of effort I put in, which made it feel like talent and dedication didn't matter nearly as much as being one of the favorites. There was also constant drama, and from my experience, people would get pulled into private rooms and be accused of things they didn't do without feeling like they were given a fair chance to explain themselves. It created an uncomfortable atmosphere where people were scared of getting in trouble over rumors or misunderstandings. I also found it very unprofessional that staff members would speak negatively about students behind their backs. Hearing adults who are supposed to support children gossiping and saying hurtful things about them was incredibly disappointing. Overall, I left feeling like this company had serious issues with favoritism, professionalism, communication, and how they treated students. In my opinion, the only reason it continues to be successful is because it has a large budget and strong financial support, not because it provides a good experience for its performers. Based on my own experience over several years, I would strongly encourage parents and young performers to look into other theatre companies before choosing this one.

Tomorrow evening I am very excited to attend their summer production of Disney's The Little Mermaid! They cast fairly and they cast talented kids, teens, and adults for parts, depending on the show. There is an emphasis on quality and professionalism, but also on fun, learning, and inclusiveness. I just LOVE that about McLaughlin Studios! Not only do they do full Main Stage Productions at McLaughlin, but they also offer Junior Musical Programs and Mini Musical Production Workshops for all ages. The owners have been in business for decades and have a very extensive resume to boot. They like to give back in a phenomenal way, and often you will find fundraisers and local vendors when you visit for shows. I love coming to shows at McLaughlin and supporting the Loomis Community! A note about parking: It will fill up if you do not arrive early for theatrical productions! There is plenty of street parking on Swetzer Road if this happens.

It's wonderful to find a large group of families who are also just as passionate. My kids look forward to going to their classes each week (my daughter loves the performing classes like Hamilton Hip Hop and children's singing classes while my introvert son loves the lighting and sound classes.) The shows are fun and involve all of the families coming together to make things happen whether helping build sets, selling refreshments, or working back stage. The greatest thing that sets CYT apart is that while the kids are learning and striving to be their best, they are learning to be better people on the inside as well. Instead of being a cut-throat, competitive atmosphere the kids are supporting each other and cheering each other on. There are life lessons in how to deal with the good and the bad of theater life like how you deal with the disappointment of not making it into a show or getting the part you wanted. I could not hope for a better place for my children to learn about theater AND life.

The kids support and encourage one another, (despite age differences, and regardless of roles). For shows, they are paired up with buddies who can walk them through the process or send them encouraging notes, etc. they focus on character development, and how kids learn what I would consider to be important qualities, such as discipline, resilience, kindness, etc. Even the parents get to join in on the fun, as parent involvement/volunteering is required for shows. I've really enjoyed connecting with other theater moms and dads and working together on parent teams. I also like that parents are not involved in the classes. That means if your kid wants to do theater and you don't have the time to volunteer, you still have options for them. The teachers are passionate and highly capable. From what I've seen, they are immensely talented in their own fields. Each time one of my children takes a class, they definitely come away knowing more than they went in knowing, and it shows in their performances. Our oldest child has been involved with CYT over the past couple of years, and we have seen great growth in her singing and dance abilities, as well as her drive and work-ethic. We're definitely excited to introduce the siblings to CYT.

In the midst of a pandemic, I was really glad to see Zoom classes offered and signed up with low expectations; I was just hoping to find my daughter an outlet for her energy. Ms. Aria and Ms. Christine remembered us even though we were gone for a while and my daughter was quickly put into the right class level. 4 days later, we received the Zoom invitation for her first class. Ms. Aria offers the Pre-Ballet 1 & 2 class to on-site in an outdoors setting (plenty of water breaks) and Zoom students, and I am impressed at her effort and attention to both on-site and her Zoom students as they are, after all, young children. After the first class on a tablet, our family experimented with our zoom learning space and eventually settled on projecting to the wall-mounted TV with a blue tape on the carpet to keep our kid within camera view, so Ms. Aria can monitor my daughter's progress more easily. By the end of second class, my daughter has revisited the old ballet positions and learned new ones, all from the comfort of our living room (aka zoom learning space). I am really glad we signed up for Zoom ballet classes. My daughter was so excited for her second class this week she was all dressed and ready to go an hour before class. I've tried some intense workout programs before, but this one is by far my favorite. Despite the intensity, the coaches there did a great job of making sure I was 1.working out at a level of difficulty that was safe but challenging; and 2. Making sure that I didnt sacrifice form as I got tired. I was far from the best there, but never once did I feel like anyone judged me, and in fact everyone was extremely encouraging. I had coaches and people I'd never met pushing me to keep going, giving me tips, and congratulating me when it was all over. Whether you are already into crossfit or you're just starting out, I'd absolutely recommend looking into their crossfot program. Their first class is free (just sign a waiver), and from what I hear (still need to confirm this) their prices for unlimited monthly classes are pretty competitive for around here ($50/month). I can't speak on experience for any of their other classes, but in short their crossfit program has great coaches, a great encouraging atmosphere, and good attention to form and safety. Only downside is its only a small space dedicated to crossfit, but I think that'll change soon.
