In its Miracle (Christmas) form last week, I enjoyed some dinner and drinks after getting started across the street. The bar was decorated for its Christmas popup but wasn't too over the top. I appreciated the fresh antipasto salad and sticky, crispy wings, but the drinks were the show stoppers. I slowed down with the Snowball Old Fashioned (rye and gingerbread bitters), which was perfect, and finished the night with the Snow Day Sipper - fancy hot chocolate, delicious but fancy hot chocolate. They staff are friendly but not pushy, and they have suggestions if you want them, which you might. I like this space as it is small and feels intimate. We stopped by Dragonfly after dinner at Freya because it's right next door. The inside is a bit on the dim side with lots of eclectic art for sale on display. There's a lot of seating available at tables, at couches, and at the bar. We settled down on a couch and someone stopped by to give us water and take our orders. We only got one cocktail each but we were absolutely blown away at the complexity of the flavors and how well they meshed together. This is the support bar for Freya, connected by a back hallway, as well as a cocktail/small plates bar of its own. Very limited street parking, we were lucky to get a spot on Grand. They caution against car break ins on side streets. Do not park in Oak and Reel's private lot. The bar itself was good/great. Great staff, qood and inventive drinks. Dragonfly is a cocktail bar located next to the resturant Freya. It's small and intimate with several two seater tables as well as some four seaters and small bar with seats. It's very brightly decorated which I love. The colors are light blue, teal, and red. They do serve a small menu with some happy hour prices as well. For a cocktail bar I thought there prices were on the cheaper side for Detroit which is a huge plus. My bartender was friendly and make great cocktails. I got the berry fine wine. It was a light and refreshing drink. I also ordered the crab cakes. You receive two small crab cakes with super thin fries that give it a nice crunch. It's also served with a lemon and dipping sauce. The crab cakes were very good I would order again. I came around 6:30 by myself and there were several others by themselves as well. Service was terrible. My daughter and I went and seen mama Mia and then wanted to have a drink. We went into this place, sat at the bar. The 2 bartenders ignored us to the point we were talking about between ourselves. We were gonna leave so man came over and took our drink order, we both tried something we never had before. They were ok! But the bartender never came back didn't ask if wanted anything else, I asked for the bill we paid and left. My daughter and I joked how we didn't know what we did to make them mad. Dragonfly is all decked out for Christmas with a special holiday cocktail menu. It is really cute and the bartenders were dressed up too. They were able to adjust a few of the drinks to mocktails but they still charged the same amount as an alcoholic drink fyi. They drinks are expensive (about 15$ apiece) but they were also really delicious and not too sweet. There is some street parking and a parking lot next door. read more

Such a YUM place that is so casual and understated, while being just such a beautiful space for catching up with loved ones over a few delicious bites and drinks! Dragonfly provides the drinks for Freya (located next door in the same building) and Freya's chef makes the food from Dragonfly, so you are guaranteed the best of both worlds, but at the significantly lower price for bites and sampling from their entire a la carte menu at Dragonfly. The menu will rotate in a few new dishes from time to time, but some of their best here are their salmon cheese (they give you so much of it and I still wanted to lick the plate clean) and the mussels (also such a generous portion and FILLING!). We tried their mushroom dumplings and their fried chicken sliders as well, which were both also so so good, albeit a tad underseasoned. But I truly wanted to try everything on the menu and will be back soon to do a new permutation of the dishes they have to offer! Their menu is ~10 items so it's super manageable to process and order from! As for drinks, I know that this space is predominantly a gorgeously set up bar, but as someone who doesn't drink I can't speak to the drinks on this menu other than I have tons of friends who love coming here for drinks - and especially for happy hour when they have amazing deals on both their drinks and food! I love that they had a whole mocktail section with very unique offerings that I've never seen before! I tried two drinks off their mocktail menu and both were so good - although I can't even remember what either one was! Will definitely be back over and over again to enjoy the bites and sips here! Perhaps the best happy hour in Detroit right now??? I was introduced to Dragonfly through a Yelp drink mixing event a few months back and definitely wanted to return because of what seemed to be skilled bartenders and their promotion of happy hour... which turned out to be pretty damn good. They have an EXTENSIVE drink menu with levels of alcohol from regular to light to non alcoholic. I tried two drinks and "Dragons smile" was really good. They seem to use really fresh ingredients for their food... the mushroom dumplings were really good. I tried some of their other menu items at the Yelp event and they were good as well. Each item I had was for the low low happy hour price of 7 BUCKS! I don't think I've paid 7 bucks for anything in a few years now let alone an alcoholic drink. And nobody was really there on a Thursday. Get up on this happy hour now, they open a little bit before 5pm. So on date night, hubby and I decided to give this spot a go. Let's do the food. Short Rib Sliders: Definitely a strong strong dish. It's off the menu, so if you get lucky, definitely order these. Pork Belly: It's a play on pork chops and apple sauce. It's definitely super pleasant. I would order it again. It's a bit meager tho. Their cocktails are super yummy, most of the things on the drink menu are sweet. Definitely super enjoyable, but they need a bit of potency. I definitely lean towards stronger cocktails. Anyways, the place is really nice. It has that open minimalist flow that's definitely a pleasant atmosphere. Perfect for starting the night out and getting the conversation going. No food available. We each had a drink on the rocks. Every drink is $16 or more. Ours were $16, with tax $32.86. BUT, they automatically add 21% tip. Two drinks poured into a glass, (no 'craft' here) for a total of $39.68. This is getting ridiculous! No choice in tip amount and $16 a drink?! The space is 'meh.' (metal stools and tables); we went once when they first opened and, since then, they've really increased prices. They tried over dressing up with Christmas decorations which didn't upscale it at all. Plenty of small two person tables, and a few larger sized ones as well. Dragonfly's menu offerings feature low-alcohol and non-alcohol beverages that are just as imaginative and tasty. It worked very well for THIS evening's designated driver. Our mixologist/server was Brianna - alcohol/menu-knowledgeable, engaging and professional. The "Hallowed Halls" cocktail, a mixture of: Fino Sherry, Alma De Trabanco, Chartreuse Green was fabulous, and that is no wonder. Dragonfly is an offshoot of Executive Chef, Doug Hewitt's "Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails" in Detroit's cultural center! The beverages went so well with the Shrimp Escabeche on a warmed half-baguette. We tried and enjoyed the garlic hummus with heated pita wedges as well. All quite good! We will return. The chef, Tim, is so passionate and knowledgeable about what he does and uses really incredible ingredients. He's always trying new things and changing dishes which keeps everything exciting.
