I am totally shocked by the negative reviews. We loved the Upright! Located in the basement of Oak and Reel, we have been wanting to check out this speakeasy since it opened! The ambiance is classy and charming. We made reservations expecting it to be busy, but we didn't end up needing them. It was not busy when we got there and we were able to sit at the bar, which is our preferred spot. We came strictly for drinks. The bartenders were welcoming and very helpful. I was able to get a paperplane which is one of my favorites. I can't remember what the fruity drink was that I ordered after. He stuck with more traditional drinks. Is it expensive? It's a speakeasy. You are paying for the atmosphere and the handcrafted cocktails. The price was on par with the quality. I would definitely come back. This was a fabulous night!

We had dinner reservations at Oak & Reel so decided to grab a drink at Upright beforehand. I was excited to try Upright given its connection to Oak & Reel. They have a list of about 15 cocktails along with a selection of mocktails, beer, spirits and wine. The decor was dark and moody with the staff being upbeat and friendly. As for the cocktail menu, there wasn't a single cocktail the jumped out to me as inspiring or unique. Quite a few drinks sounded sweet or featured coconut cream which isn't my thing. I opted for Le Freak while my husband had the NM Vinyl. Both were just fine but we both felt like we could get better craft cocktails at a comparable price elsewhere.

Kind service, nice space, and a well executed cocktail. That said most cocktails are in the 18 to 25 dollar range. Average probably around 20. Some of the booze bottles were not top shelf, but felt like top shelf pricing for one cocktail. Enjoy gin.. Hendricks was the best bottle, they also had Plymouth and The Botanist.

I love Oak & Reel and I love cocktails so I was super excited to try the new bar on their lower level. The space is pretty with cool photography and art on the walls, cozy booths and dim lighting. However when I opened the menu I literally gasped! There was not a cocktail under $20 on the list. Now I expect to pay $25 for an old fashioned when I'm at a tourist trap bar like at the top of the John Hancock building in Chicago, but in the basement of a restaurant in Detroit?! The cocktail was good, the service was flawless, but I don't see myself going back with such high prices - there's too many other good options nearby to pay $50 a round for 2 people.

Cute and cozy cocktail bar - great date night spot! Located in the basement of Oak & Reel, the ambiance is posh and the space is cozy. Its a little too dim for a bright day and too small for me to pick this location to meet with friends, but it's perfect for a date night when you want to have a 1:1 conversation. The ladies working the bar are also serving the tables so I'm sure that can get hectic but they were lovely and service was solid. I tried the bourbon + expresso and loved the unique flavors!

Best martini I've ever had. Yelp wants me to write more but that's the long and the short of it.

Be still my (former) neighborhood heart. Catching up - cocktails here are still top notch: top as in they taste great, notch as in they could take you down one with their strength. I rolled back in here right after Christmas and started tasting my way through the menu with the Squash mezcal boi. Normally I would never try a drink with boi in its name, but this name is a part of Kiesling's history, and squash? Come on. I had to try it, and it put me right back in the neighborhood as if I had just walked down across the bridge on Brush for a couple of drinks. (And someone please tell me, am I dreaming, didn't we used to cross on Beaubien, too?) I followed that up with the Kie Rye Pie because I cannot resist rhyming, and I am fascinated with drambuie. I thought the drink might be too sweet and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. I had to close the night out with the Pear Pressure because, alas, there is still no food at the Kiesling, and there was no pop up, and I didn't want eat carryout at the bar. The drink was great, but after three I was feeling the booze and headed across the street for something to eat. This bar is cozy with its wooden interior. It still serves a beer and a shot. And folks are friendly, but not going to get in your business unless you invite them.

The bar was decorated for its Christmas popup but wasn't too over the top. I appreciated the fresh antipasto salad and sticky, crispy wings, but the drinks were the show stoppers. I slowed down with the Snowball Old Fashioned (rye and gingerbread bitters), which was perfect, and finished the night with the Snow Day Sipper - fancy hot chocolate, delicious but fancy hot chocolate. They staff are friendly but not pushy, and they have suggestions if you want them, which you might. I like this space as it is small and feels intimate. It's not overwhelming when you're on your own, so a great spot to stop for a solo drink or meal.

The space is stylish yet approachable, with local art on the walls and a laid-back feel that strikes the perfect balance between casual and classy. We tried the miso carrots, the walleye, and the summer pea pasta. All of the plates were artfully decorated and I loved all the combos of flavors and textures. For dessert, we could not pass up the banana cake. Similar flavor to banana bread, with some kind of magical caramel frosting and crunchy almonds. Chartreuse is very deserving of all of those Best of Detroit awards.
