It's the dawning of the age of the ROOSTER ... the age of the ROOSTER; ok, it doesn't sing well with the classic song of a new age from the Sixties but the visit to the Dragon's Nest was on Chinese New Year's weekend with the ROOSTER getting ready to crow. So, CELEBRATE ... get some Chinese specials ...
Ok, so the Dragon's Nest on a Sunday afternoon is a very quiet cave but come on folks where's the indication that a new year is here? No Chinese New Year Specials? Is your location out in the middle of the country (right off of I-295) a reason to disconnect with a date of cultural significance?
Well, the restaurant is clean with a very appealing dining area. Service was attentive although the team of guys working and serving us all were dressed for catching the rooster on the farm rather than serving diners. I felt bad for the one server whose cold was very evident with sniffles, cough and sneezes ... wait, did I mention that he didn't take the day off but was serving us our food.
The hot and sour soup was absolutely delicious with a broth that indicated that someone paid attention while blending the wondrous flavors that can transform broth and veggies into something special. There was no idle tossing of mushrooms from the store into the soup ... I definitely wanted more. Lots of interesting crisp veggies but still heated thoroughly in the mix.
The Chinese fried noodles were HOME MADE ... yes, not the dried up curls that all too many eat in and take out places insult you with. These were good and a nice duck sauce accompanied them (Probably not homemade but still good.).
Ahh those steamed dumplings. When you "STEAM" dumplings you put them in a basket allowing the steam to rise and cook them utilizing steam. The steam penetrates the dough and heats the contents. All you had to do was look at the serving plate to make a pretty good guess that these steamed dumplings had been dropped in a pot of hot water and semi boiled (They were not all that heated inside and out.) before being dumped on the plate leaving Canton Lake of Water in full view. That's right, these luke warm dumplings sat in water, which made for a rather unattractive presentation.
The entrees for this Chinese New Year Feast were "Tangerine Chicken" (Noted on the menu as Hot and Spicy.) and a scallop chicken (Jade Chicken) stir fry. First, spicy? SPICY? I want some spicy meatballs if I see the notation 'spicy!' I didn't ask for mild ... I just had expectations that I'd experience some heat with the bites I took however, nope. The breaded chicken had a nice "tangerine" flavor that tasted like "orange chicken" and my first few bites were more hardened breading than chicken but as I worked the plate the ratio improved making it an acceptable meal. Now, the presentation was colorful and very appealing with bright green broccoli surrounding the orange highlighted friend chicken but it really would have been a nice touch if the broccoli wasn't cold ... like just out of the freezer cold (Well, the florets weren't icy but there was more warmth walking outside on a 32 degree day.). The scallop blend was actually pretty good prepared in a sauce that had a very noticeable fish flavored sauce.
So, my Chinese New Year celebrations for 2017 sort of fizzled out but the Hot and Sour Soup was great plus those fried noodles ... and as I left there was the guy who waited on me sneezing again; as I walked out the door and he sneezed again I wished him well and suggested he go home to get better ... so what was going to be a three star review sort of fizzled out on reflection to two stars with a note ... if you are feeling down and troubled with your health and you need a helping hand ... and nothing nothing is going right. Pick up your cell phone and call out some employee's name and wherever they are they'll come running & soon you won't have to be wiping your nose in front of customers and even your darkest afternoon will be brightened up resting at home plus those reviewing your restaurant on YELP might be giving more than a two star rating. read more
