Rare do we get authentic Vietnamese cuisine in the east end of Montreal…read more This is the go to place when we want to eat some Vietnamese food so my mother doesn't have to cook for the whole family. I did hesitate between giving a 4 or 5 but I did recommend this restaurant to my Caucasian friends and they absolutely loved it and I think it deserves its 5/5. A background of vietnamese music will play while you eat. You'll probably also get to see vietnamese customers order different items than what you have ordered! You can ask for extra piment on the side, and it's spicy as wished. My favourite is their canh chua aka aigre-douce soup! So far this is the best vietnamese restaurant in east end of montreal !!

Service is good. Ambiance is okay. One of the empty bowl served to us still had a little food residue in it it's just a small glitch to this place. Deserves a visit if you're a foodie.

Think lots of simple wood furnishings and Indie Tunes mellowing you out. To be honest, I've had better iterations of these dishes elsewhere, but I still think the food was good, but it was the cozy atmosphere that took it over the edge. It's not for everyone- and that's part of what makes DonDonYa unique. I had the Peach Yogurt drink which was a lovely accompaniment to my meal of cold noodles with peanut sauce and the Okonomoyaki. The Okonomiyaki was a bit overcooked, but still good. The noodles were nice too, but lacking the depth of flavor I've had in other renditions of this dish. Overall, the food here is good- more like 3 star territory, but I was really enamored with how cool the place was, so I'd say 4 stars is where I feel DonDonYa lands.

The spring rolls taste like the frozen veggie ones from Asian supermarkets. The salad and rice were also nothing special. However, the for value it's not bad. Service was very attentive although the kitchen was quite slow. Our appetizers came 1 hour after our meats arrived, which was a bit strange. Ambiance is a bit cold since the tables are so close to the doors, so we constantly felt a gust of cold air during our visit.

It all exceeded expectations, and our expectations were high going in based on the well-deserved hype! The 20-30 minute wait was so worth it. One of the owners works the line & he offered drinks to everyone as we waited outside. The other owner took our order, and when my son and I said we wanted to try a bunch of different things and asked if we could do smaller portions (1bun instead of 2 & a mix of satays), he happily obliged us. Now let's talk about the food - the laksa soup, pork belly bun, papaya salad and satays were all EXACTLY RIGHT. Like chefs kiss kind of right. The owner came by when all the food had been taken away and jokingly asked if we had enough, and my son sheepishly said he probably needed one more of the pork belly buns, and it came right out. So tender and sublime. I couldn't eat another bite, but he somehow stuffed it in because it was just so good. My son can't wait to sport his Satay Brothers shirt back in Dallas! 10 out of 10!

It looked cool, so I told my parents we'll go on our way back home to Toronto from Quebec City. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, and I'll admit the waiting area isn't the best. When we finally got our table, it was tucked in the corner of the restaurant by the windows. Thankfully it was insulated well despite a cold night. The food concept is pretty unique here, as Southeast Asian cuisine isn't too common overall. We decided to share a bunch of dishes to increase the variety of foods. Pork Belly Steamed Buns - Excellent Laksa Soup with Chicken - Excellent, and I like how they separated the satay on a spoon. Satay Babi - This was an item from their special menu, which is basically satay pork skewers. It was also very good. Fried chicken - Nothing special, could probably skip this. Char kway teow - Very uniquely done. I wasn't expecting clams on it, and it was an excellent addition. Service was also amazing. There are some other dishes that I wasn't able to try, and I would say the uniqueness of this place will entice me to return here.

I got the Salmon and Tuna poke bowl and vegetarian spring rolls. For the price and quantity of food, I wasn't very impressed. Not sure if this is how poke bowls are done here, but I'm used to much more white rice, while this was primarily seaweed/salad as the base. None of the flavors or ingredients were standouts and I have had much better poke bowls elsewhere (in the States). The spring rolls tasted like they were just heated from frozen and had a weird aftertaste. The filling was basically mush and didn't have my fresh vegetables. Overall, I would say this is a decent choice for a close meal after touring the area, but nothing outstanding in my opinion. Price: 3/5 Taste: 3/5 Value: 3/5

You can also order to go here I believe. They really operate efficiently, expect fast service! Tables are tightly situated and there's a cozy bar situation where I sat this time, able to watch the chefs cook right in front of me. The daily specials are posted on their Instagram page, as well as written on pieces of paper around the restaurant. My server quickly helped me to water and a glass of sake. I placed a to go order for one of the daily specials, the grilled sea bass with sushi rice and salad, with some kimchi. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with tortilla and salad, as well as vegetable gyoza. Everything was incredible. Truly. The gyoza came topped with green onions and was SO crispy and hot and was perfect with their soy sauce. I thought sea bass was wonderful with a unique almost smoky flavor that melted in my mouth paired with the slightly sweet sticky rice. The barbecue chicken was great as well and better the next day. One thing I don't really understand is why they served plain flour tortillas cut into quarters with their food. We didn't utilize this, nor the white butter/mayo sauce that came alongside it. I hope to eat here often, for years to come and am so happy to see this iconic Japanese restaurant still thriving years later.
