    Pad Thai with beef
    Angela W.

We stumbled upon this place near the Botanical Gardens after a long time of walking around. This was truly a hidden gem in the neighbourhood and deserves more reviews!! After a week of eating poutine on our Montreal trip, we were ready for a change of taste and in need of some Asian food. The restaurant looks like its family run with all hands on deck. That's how you know the food will taste good. While it's tucked away in a neighbourhood, it was quite busy with people constantly coming in and out of the place getting food. The inside has a fake tree decoration which looked neat. It looked like they had put some thought into decorating it unlike some other typical mom and pop Asian restaurants. As for food, I ordered Pad Thai with beef while my boyfriend got the orange beef with rice. They also have some sushi combos but we didn't feel like trying sushi that day. The portions are pretty big - especially my Pad Thai. There were also a lot of beef pieces hidden away on the bottom so it felt like it was really worth the price. The orange beef was also good. The meal definitely hit the spot. If you are in the area and feeling for some Asian food, definitely check this place out!

After visiting the botanical garden, me and my friend were craving some asian food so we decided to try Fusion Express. We ordered two Pad Thai and one roll of spicy tuna sushi. The food got ready pretty quickly and the service was brilliant too. They give you about double the size of pad thai rather than regular ones i had in USA. The food was perfectly seasoned and tasted amazing. The sushi tasted great as well. I would highly recommend this place if you want to try asian food nearby!

You can also order to go here I believe. They really operate efficiently, expect fast service! Tables are tightly situated and there's a cozy bar situation where I sat this time, able to watch the chefs cook right in front of me. The daily specials are posted on their Instagram page, as well as written on pieces of paper around the restaurant. My server quickly helped me to water and a glass of sake. I placed a to go order for one of the daily specials, the grilled sea bass with sushi rice and salad, with some kimchi. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with tortilla and salad, as well as vegetable gyoza. Everything was incredible. Truly. The gyoza came topped with green onions and was SO crispy and hot and was perfect with their soy sauce. I thought sea bass was wonderful with a unique almost smoky flavor that melted in my mouth paired with the slightly sweet sticky rice. The barbecue chicken was great as well and better the next day. One thing I don't really understand is why they served plain flour tortillas cut into quarters with their food. We didn't utilize this, nor the white butter/mayo sauce that came alongside it. I hope to eat here often, for years to come and am so happy to see this iconic Japanese restaurant still thriving years later.

Once seated, things happen very quickly...it is go, go, go (in the best possible way.) We ordered appetizers first, the tempura green beans with a delicious truffle mayo, gyoza and the tofu salad (they make it fresh every Sunday). Green beans were everyone's fave, but I have to mention the (pickled?) vegetables on the salad. So flavourful! Also tried the egg drop soup which is so tasty. Mains were the salmon tuna bowl, the beef short ribs, the shrimp burger, and 48 hour pork with curry sauce. Everything was wonderful! Finished with their soft serve ice cream, I had the cherry blossom but one of us had the sake, which is a shot of sake poured on top. Amazing! You can even have wasabi or ginger... I'll try that next time (and there will be a next time soon!)

The Long Version: I love eateries that cater to locals and Cafe Mix A Bol is one of them. They are open Monday to Friday 7am-2pm only. Their clientele is mostly office workers nearby or people taking the commuter trains out of Central Station. I've walked by Cafe Mix A Bol many times to and from the VIA Rail train station, but it's always been closed because these days when I'm in Montreal it's mostly on the weekends. I might arrive on a Friday, but I would have just had breakfast or lunch on the train, so their limited hours never worked out for me. However, recently, my husband and I decided to do a weekday trip to Montreal. He agreed to indulge in my desire to hit food spots that are only open on weekdays, lol. So we stopped by to share a grilled chicken banh mi ($9.25) and he also got a coffee ($3). The banh mi was a good size for sharing and they even cut it in half for us. It had grilled chicken, pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro and mayo. The mayo was a bit more than my preference, but I prefer my sandwiches not too saucy. Other than that, the banh mi was delicious. It was nicely grilled and the bread was crispy on the outside. I did notice that the carrots and daikon were sliced into rounds instead of the usual strips. It did not affect the taste, but it's something I noticed because it was different, lol ;) Staff were pleasant. There's a small seating area inside the cafe. They sell Vietnamese summer rolls/salad rolls as well (Goi Cuon) as banh mi. They have Korean bibimbap too. And they have North American sandwiches like tuna and chicken salad. They have baked goods and really huge cookies. They do catering as well. So glad I finally got to try them. My husband doesn't get my obsession with places like this, haha, and I can't really explain it either, but a food business that is small and independently owned that can open bankers hours and survive must be good, right? And the owners are usually really pleasant because they likely have good work-life balance :) Review #151 (2025)

I had seen it on previous visits, and this time we had been pretty well exposed to Quebecois food following our arrival to Longueuil, our time in Montreal, then to Trois-Rivieres, to Quebec City, and back. We were looking for something different, we enjoy Thai food in New York when it is really good, and we were hungry that day following an outing. One of our favorite restaurants where we live in Queens is an authentic Thai restaurant, so having been in Canada for eight days already, we were excited for something that was a little more familiar and without maple syrup. The menu is more akin to an Asian fusion restaurant than that of a purely That restaurant. For appetizers we ordered chicken dumplings in peanut sauce and steamed vegetable dumplings. The peanut sauced dumplings were delicious, served hot with a creamy peanut sauce that coated the dumplings and made them rich. The steamed dumplings were great too, simple with a perfectly seasoned sweet soy dipping sauce. I did order a Thai staple, sliced chicken and mixed vegetables in a ginger sauce that comes with white rice. The ginger sauce was light, a little sweet, and perfectly balanced. The dish was a perfect showcase for the better quality produce you find in Canada than in the US. The vegetables were all fresh and tasty and that was an even greater addition to the chicken and sauce. My wife and son are less adventurous than I am and what's more, neither eat or tolerate spicy food well, and my wife has a tree nut allergy (although she would concur that the peanut dumplings were great). My wife and son (9) had Thai chicken fried rice and was excellent, too. It was light and fresh yet full of flavor from well-seasoned chicken and vegetables that are stir fried before the addition of the rice. To me this seemed more like a chicken stir-fry entree that had mixed with a side order of rice at the table by us than chicken fried rice. Often, fried rice isn't good enough on its own but here it is. The portion, too, was large and it is garnished with fresh cucumbers, tomato and cilantro. The server we had, a young woman, helped us order in English and they do have an English menu. We would definitely go back and it's nice to find a non-Quebecois restaurant right in the neighborhood where we stay about 10 days out of the year on average.

Let's start with the service: Prefaced by saying that it was not very busy at all (4 to 5 other tables). We were taken to a table and left for quite some time. We sat for maybe 10-15 minutes with no water or menu provided. Once we did finally order and receive our cocktails, they were... off. I ordered their Tokyo Kin which tasted like a watered down lemonade and you cannot convince me there was even a drop of alcohol in that glass. My partner ordered their espresso martini dupe, which was very underwhelming as well. Our food was fine, nothing grand. The presentation was lovely, however, $5 for 3 pieces of shrimp was a joke. Small portions, lack of flavor, and extreme prices made for a very unpleasant dining experience. If not an already frustrating experience, we then went to find our server so we could pay and finally leave. Upon walking to the bar we saw them eating and lounging on their phones. This was a very unpleasant experience and the bill being nearly $90 was laughable for what we received. I would recommend looking into other restaurants in the area unless you are wanting to have a terribly underwhelming experience.

We were also late and I had called the number and left them a voicemail to advise them & when I got there and mentioned this , the host looked at me weird , which I didn't get why and went to see if they can find us another table since they had given our table away since they thought we were going to be a no show ( since they didn't check the phone msg). We got to our table, the waiter was nice and super helpful for the dinner . We had ordered the edamame and chicken gyoza for appetizers. The edamame had a quick since it had a blend of spices to make this Japanese spice & the gyozas were succulent. Mains : my friends had orders the tofu salad and tartare , and I had ordered the bibimbap. Mine was as expected , delicious & so was the tartare. The only main complaint my friend had was for the the tofu salad as there was barely any tofu in the salad and more of the kale . Drinks : I ordered a regular mojito ( not the one on the menu but the classic), one friend ordered a non alcoholic mojito & the other didn't order anything to drink. She had wanted an ice tea since she was driving and the bar actually had everything but ice tea , which was a first . The reason why it's a 3 star is not solely based on the drink selection, but mainly how we were greeted and dealt with at the beginning. I would definitely go back eventually to try again when it isn't raining

The rest of the group tried the rainbow roll, chefs choice Maki combination, chefs choice sushi combination, tonkatsu pork, and the beignets for dessert. Let me start off by mentioning the incredibly kind service we received from the hostess, server, and staff the entire night. On an incredibly busy Friday night, they maintained their patience as the restaurant was completely booked, and were kind and pleasant in every interaction. The restaurant itself is beautifully located in downtown, clean, and spacious. You do not feel rushed to eat. The food was so good we have decided to go back for dinner one more night before traveling back home. The vegetables and fish are fresh, the portions are perfect yet generous, and overall, id rate this restaurant a 12/10. Highly recommend if you're in Montreal and looking for good food.

I thought I had pre-booked a reservation, and we were running late. Parking in this area can be a trick. I dropped my wife off and continued to locate parking. She contacted me and said there was no reservation. I panicked as I parked my truck and sifted through my emails for a confirmation. I hustled the 0.4 miles back to her. When I went in the hostess said it wouldn't be a problem and brought us to a table. My wife later told me she was offered tea while she waited. The waiter was on spot. He knew their menu and provided us with his insights. All the food was Devine. Beautifully laid out and brought out each course in the perfect time. My wife loved the hibachi, she doesn't eat much in general and I do most of the cooking at home. She couldn't get enough of putting items in the hibachi and moving them around. Guess I need a hibachi at home lol. Also my wife is 86 pounds, so she gets cold easy. The hibachi was the perfect personal heater too!! We had a great time together. The ambiance had that perfect Japanese appeal, while still modern. I used to live in Japan so I can be skeptical when it comes to Japanese flair & food. This establishment did not disappoint. So if you are in Montreal, I highly recommend giving this place a go. Side note, pricing is very reasonable considering what is included in packages. And the Saki I had was delicious and looking it up for the going rate they make around $5 per bottle based on what they sell it for and market retail price (place around the corner up charges 110%). So you are more than getting what you pay for in my opinion. And sometimes you just cannot put a price on excellent service! We will definitely be returning when we venture. To Montreal again.
