It's been a long time since I came to Oakland. I had seen this place before, but never had the chance to go inside. After walking in, I immediately noticed how tight the security was. Later, I found out they also offer alcohol service and transform into a bar and nightclub at night. After a certain hour, everyone entering has to show ID and go through a belongings check. However, I was only there for dinner today. I was seated in a different section where there were quite a few people dining, along with a large stage showing an NBA game. From what I briefly noticed, besides the dining area, they also have three to four private rooms for customers waiting to sing karaoke. The overall environment was clean and well maintained. Even though the food is Chinese cuisine, it seemed like a lot of Western customers also really enjoy the food and atmosphere here. I personally ordered their wonton soup, dumplings, and a baked napa cabbage with cream sauce. Every dish was very well executed, and I was surprised that the prices were not expensive at all. Overall, I would give this place a five star rating and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Asian food along with a Western style nightlife atmosphere. The only downside is that the location is in Jack London Square, where parking can be extremely difficult to find. Two stars are for Mona -- she was the only one who demonstrated genuine professionalism and courtesy. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was defined by an interaction with a male server that felt unnecessarily confrontational. I was told not to sit at a table I preferred, and was explicitly informed I would not be served if I chose to sit there. It's unclear why a paying customer would be addressed in this manner. The tone and approach felt more like being challenged than welcomed, which is disappointing in a service setting. Hospitality should not feel conditional or intimidating. I hope management takes this seriously, as it leaves a lasting negative impression. Based on this experience, I would hesitate to return or recommend this place to others. read more

Had such a fun night at Dragon Gate! Honestly, I went in a little skeptical thinking the food might just be okay, but wow -- it was actually amazing. The food really surprised me in a good way. They have a mix of American snacks and Taiwanese snack food, and everything we tried was so good. The place itself is clean and feels very safe, which made it easy to just relax, enjoy drinks, and have a good time. The karaoke setup was awesome too -- they even have YouTube so you can literally search and sing any song you want. What I really loved is that it's kid-friendly. Our group all brought our kiddos, and it worked out perfectly. The kids could hang out and play inside the room while we enjoyed ourselves, so no need to leave them at home. They were pretty busy when we went so it was really hard to get service :( understandable but also keep that in mind if you go on a time crunch. We had to keep flagging for utensils/water and plates- even after our appetizers were delivered. We got cucumber appetizer, variety of kabobs/skewers and garlic noods. I will say I did enjoy my kabobs but no explanation of which were which- just a drop and run honestly. The garlic noodles were brought out but then taken away because they forgot the Parmesan seasoning but I think they just had the wrong order/table as they brought another one out in like 5 or more mins. We were seated right away and our server took the drink and food orders, after everything we ordered came we never saw the servers again. Not once did they come back and say how's everything or do you need anything or would you like another drink. Nothing!!! I would understand if they were pack and busy!!! But like I said place was pretty empty. Now for the food we order several different dishes and they were all pretty good. Butter Garlic Noodles with Mushroom, which they forgot the mushroom was good with flavor. After I raised the issue that there was no mushroom, they didn't charge for the entire dish. That was pretty nice of them. Mongolian Beef was flavorful, but more onions than beef. Garlic Stir Fried String Beans was very good and perfectly made. Salt and Pepper Wings was good. Crunchy on the outside and moist on the meat. Shrimp, Pork & Green Chives Dumplings were just okay, nothing special about it. No chives taste to it which I love. read more

Great location by the waterfront at Jack London Square. The interior was dark, masculine with prominently dark wood with large-scaled seating booths. The bar area was a bit of a mismatch. Large windows to look out over the San Francisco Bay. The menu was sort of a mixed bag. Some dishes aesthetically displeasing like the garlic noodles and chicken wings were actually good and tasty. The tater tots and dumplings were a miss! In the beginning, the server was friendly and chatty. But once the order was placed and the food served, the server was very difficult to flag down. Finally, the long awaited dragon gate in Oakland, finally opened up. Ever since they replaced Kincaid's, this place has been sitting empty for several years. The same owners of lounge Chinatown decided to open up a karaoke bar by the water, offering a similar menu of Chinese cuisine. They offer a variety of rooms available for a karaoke with a minimum purchase of two hours. Some rooms are $88 and sit up to 15 people, some rooms fit up to 40 people with for a minimum of three hours. Their drinks are still as strong as I remember when they were originally located on Broadway a couple streets down. Especially the dragon warrior one. Very tasty but very strong. I will say their drinks are very expensive. A cocktail being almost $20 is lowkey highway robbery. I know the price of the location is sort of baked into the price of the cocktail, but I can't imagine paying this much going forward being sustainable. read more

My friends and I were looking for a late night spot after hanging out in Jack London and found this place. Vibe was very interesting-kind of like Vegas (?) Loud, bright, a little chaotic. We were seated promptly and our server was nice but then right after we ordered she asked if we wanted to close out? I was caught off guard cause the food hadn't even come out yet. Ordered some tofu, sausage and pork. All very very salty. The food smelled good and the plates were good for sharing but all small bites. The salt was just too much for what we ordered. Eventually we were done but the server was nowhere to be found so we paid up front. Not sure if I'll try here again. We've tried this place twice hoping the food would get better and it didn't. Flavorless noodles and egg rolls, and dry chicken wings were disappointing. Honey walnut prawns and green beans were ok. Just ok. The food needs more...spices, zing, and authenticity. To be transparent, the experience felt like Panda Express with a Karaoke Room. The bar is slow and the bartenders looked confused. Waiting 20 minutes on weak drinks in a practically empty venue is crazy. While this isn't a traditional Bar, bartenders (and bartending servers) should still be thoroughly trained to deliver quality drinks with an efficient speed of service. I recommend pre-gaming at Plank then coming here for karaoke. Not having a server for drinks in the karaoke room was ... Designating a server(s) for the rooms would result in less traffic at the bar and allow customers to enjoy the karaoke room more without needing to leave. On the plus side, the rooms have views of the water and the lighting designs are beautiful. read more

Bartenders here are incredibly unprofessional and painfully slow. I went last weekend for a gathering and the only bad part of the night was dealing with them. They will literally avoid making eye contact so they don't have to serve you, as if you're just standing there for fun instead of trying to order a drink. Just do your job and get to the service. I still tipped, but I definitely let them know their service sucks. The male bartender with the ponytail is the worst!!! read more

The view is beautiful, peaceful, it has a prime location on the Jack London Pier, but the owner and host (I believe is the owner) doesn't have any experience with service dog laws in the U.S. so I would not recommend this place to anyone. The prices are exorbitant as well, a drink costs on average of $21 from their cocktail menu. The appetizer we got was greasy and weren't very flavorful nor reminiscent of a Chinese dish. We ended up going to a different restaurant for dinner because drinks alone ran up a bill of a $200 for 4. I'd recommend they take time to review the laws around customers and the regulations required to hold their license. read more

Location, location, location! I doubt you can ever go wrong being situated on the waterfront. Stopped in Friday night without a reservation and was immediately fat in the bar area, plus. I have a suspicion that their main priority is to see the bar side rather than the main dining room area which has been slightly converted. Overall I think the decor is lovely. I like that the bar offered booth seating and smaller tables. I wish they could figure out their music volume, periodically you would be get a loud blast but the music selection was great, r&b all night. For drinks we started with an espresso martini and a lemon drop. Our first round was very good, however, I was disappointed with the second drinks as they ran out of glasses and service us plastic cups and my espresso martini looked more like a rum and coke and had a horrible flavor. This is a family style type of restaurant, and the portions are quite generous. We started with the spring rolls, they were decent but I believe they're more exciting options, popcorn chicken which was very yummy and finally Kung Fu rice with shrimp great flavor one of the highlight. Our server started off overly attentive and came back every 3 minutes trying to take our order and then at some point just disappeared for what seemed like 30 minutes and we had to flag down a food runner for our bill. Dragon gate moved to this waterfront location in October 2024. It's a beautiful location with nice interior decor and feel. Only thing was the music was on the louder side but it makes sense when the place doesn't have sound panels to drown out the loud conversations. There weren't many diners when we were there so food came out relatively quick. Service was good and efficient. The food was overall alright. It's more of the location and atmosphere you're paying for eating here vs the quality of Taiwanese food. It's not bad, but it's not something amazing either. We had fried pork chop, stewed pork belly, beef noodle soup, Taiwanese sausage and seasonal greens. Nothing particularly stood out among all these dishes. read more

Service on a Friday night wasn't slow like I expected based on other reviews. I went in a group of four and we were seated rather quickly. There were ample of open tables. The food was as expected except for the dumplings. Dragon wings were sweet and crispy, not too dry. The garlic noodles were of good proportion although there could be a couple more shrimps. The dumplings thoughhh were disappointing. The dough was thick and the sauce was not spicy. Server was kind to give us an extra bowl of chili, but it tastes like the laoganma peanut chili sauce, no spice no kick, just plain oil. I'm hoping that there will be improvement with this place. I love the ambiance of the place. It was decorated very nicely and being by the water definitely was a plus. We came for a late lunch so the place was pretty empty. We were seated at the bar side of the restaurant. There was a wide variety of items on the menu. We ordered a few items and were a little disappointed in that a couple of the dishes were on the saltier side. Service in itself could use some improvement. The wait staff didn't come around to see how we were doing very much and when we needed one there was no one around. This place is a lot of fun . It's right on the water in JLS. We reserved a private karaoke room which literally overlooked the water. They use YouTube to play songs, which enables you to sing pretty much anything. The room itself is cute, comfortable and, very clean. The service was attentive. But don't worry, they also have a lot of "regular" food if that's not your forte. We for sure got carried away with their fried street food options - try them all! I'd say their food was quite sodium heavy.. assuming they'll be great pairings with beef and a bowl of rice to balance the flavors out. As much as we ordered.. would love to come back and explore their menu some more. Overall had a great time but wish their food were more consistent. We originally planned to stop by for just one drink while bar and food hopping, but we ended up staying much longer after seeing the food menu. I came in with no expectations and left seriously impressed. First off, my Amaretto Sour was perfect. Smooth, balanced, and honestly one of the best I've had in a while. We got curious about the food and wanted to try a small snack to pair with the drink. I spotted the "Thousand Year Egg" under the fried section and immediately knew I had to order it. An easy 10/10. It was seasoned perfectly and had flavor notes similar to Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken--which, let's be real, is always a win. If you're adventurous enough, you gotta try this. Our server (who btw was so funny and nice) recommended we try their kabobs, and THANK GOD we listened. We ended up ordering the chicken heart, pork intestine, and lamb skewers. Each one was well-seasoned and grilled just right. Pork Intestine - 9/10 Lamb - 8/10 Chicken Heart - 5/10 (a bit too chewy for my taste, but the flavor was there) The restaurant is located by the Jack London Square marina, making it a great hangout spot if you want to relax by the water. I've heard it's even more beautiful at night when all the lights come on so definitely coming back to see that for myself. All in all, a hidden gem I wasn't expecting to find. I've been to Dragon Gate Oakland twice in Jan2025 and it's interesting to note that depending on the day of the week, the service is quite different. However, the servers are very nice and try their best. They're just very busy on the weekend but I can see that they're really rushing around as quickly as possible so it's hard to be upset with them. Food is really good and worth a visit. The decor inside is incredible, especially if you're lucky enough to get a table by the windows where you can see the sky changing colors from afternoon to night. All a great experience except who I came with. Just going to keep it short. I know the food selection is to a certain cuisine but add some steak!! The place has a really nice setup. I liked where we sat, nice views. The employees were welcoming and helpful. I liked the west coast suggestion of IPA beer I got Parking is far so it's pretty much a walk through but lots to view. Came for dinner with a party of 5 during their soft opening last month and really enjoyed the ambiance and most of the dishes as well. It's definitely a bit on the pricy side, but the higher prices make sense given the location and classy ambiance. We came by Friday evening around 6 pm and surprisingly the restaurant was mostly empty. The location is amazing, situated right on the water, and the inside really comes to life at night when all of the red lanterns and ambiance lighting is lit. They have private karaoke rooms as well for $88/hour, with a 2 hour minimum. They're quite large and can fit 10-15 people easily, even up to 20 if you squeeze. Great for larger parties but definitely not for our smaller group. The menu is huge and has the largest variety of Taiwanese dishes I've ever seen. There's a good number of vegetarian options as well. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share. * marks my favorites: B1 mini combo platter with bean curd, pig ear slices, beef tendon ($15) H4 pork and cabbage dumplings ($15) - pricy for the small portions, would skip * P3 popcorn chicken ($11) - my favorite dish of the night * K4 spicy braised beef noodle soup ($18) * C10 salt and pepper tofu ($16) * C25 oyster omelet pancake ($19) E11 basil eggplant ($21) D1 three cup chicken ($21) - my least favorite dish by far of the meal. Don't recommend Over the course of the 2.5 hours we were here, it never got too full and we never felt rushed at all by the servers. This restaurant may not work for everyone but the food here is definitely authentically Asian. They serve delicious chicken skins, frogs, and 3 types for of stinky tofu! You can still order the simple Chinese foods such as spring rolls and fried rice but if you are more adventurous this is the place to be. The restaurant is beautiful inside out, great views and efficient staff. Definitely a good vibe here. They open late so you can either have a bite or a full meal. I really missed Dragon Gate after it closed, so I was counting down the days for its revival. Finally, I noticed, after months of walking past it during its construction phase, an open sign. I made quick plans for a visit. Walking in I noticed the hostess was one of the same ones at the original Dragon Gate. As was one of the waitresses. So there was an immediate level of comfort. Also, in this obviously Asian establishment there was a black bartender, who was also one of the ones helping to serve us. He was attentive and friendly. I want to note that he is the first black server I have ever seen at an Asian restaurant. I hope this trend continues. I am happy that management was willing to break the color wall. As for the food, first of all, the popcorn chicken, one of its signature dishes, was a little undercooked. But at least the flavor was as good as it was before. The Oyster Omelet Pancake was a gelatinous mess. The oyster flavor was acceptably strong, but that gooey texture was bad for me. This dish was a first try, so I have no idea how it's supposed to be. But it just wasn't for me. The wontons in the Pork Wonton Soup were really big, but the soup was a little lukewarm. I also ordered Crispy Pork Intestine. Unfortunately, this was not fried long enough (common theme?). So it lacked the requisite crunchiness. As my visit was during the beta opening, it's clear their kitchen still needs work. But at least the sunset on the wharf water was breathtaking. This second iteration is also quite a bit more expensive than the old Dragon Gate. Afterall, you're now sitting by the water side in the tourist-trappy Jack London Sq. (JLS). So as they say in Chinese, you are also eating the view. Their grand opening is 12/12. I'm giving them four-stars for the effort to restart this JLS institution, hoping it will reach its previous heights. read more

Okay, Dragon Gate. I see your improvements. As mentioned in my prior review, Dragon Gate has re-opened it's doors at Jack London Square in Q4-2024. It had a soft launch in late October with their intended full-open in December. Well, they are finally fully staffed up and kicking butt. Everything from décor, their well thought out menu, courteous staff, has been kicked into performance mode. As an aside, I also found my dish. My order is the Three Cup Chicken (popular Taiwanese staple) with either young fresh chicken (D1) or chicken wings (D2). The dish is simple but is made in a stone pot and just truly delivers what I'm looking for when coming to Dragon Gate. I pair that along with a bowl of white rice and I'm set. Great place to watch a game, get some drinks for a happy hour, or fill a craving for some comfort food. read more

I remember when Deagon Gate first opened almost a year ago their spicy beef noodle was surprisingly delicious. Went again tonight and something's off. The soup and noodle ration was off. I noticed the noodles were not the ho fun I requested. Waiter said we can keep the dish as he inquires with manager to give us a new bowl. We're starving so I'm diving in but waiter comes back to take our already eaten bowl. And then returns with a bowl of ho fun but same amount of soup and lack of ingredients. We had already tried the beef and veggies in our small bowl but you'd think they would add more. Sadly it was disgusting. The "slow cooked" carrot was old. Not even soft to bite into but it looked like it was sitting in the broth for awhile. The beef was not tender it was hard and rough to bite. And the radish looked slow cooked and marinated but was hard and not flavored. We also got the branch parts of the choy cum so not even the leafy bits. $18 for this crap?! It's like they slipped the cooked ho fun after they fished the old noodles out. This is super unhygienic and bad service. We ended up just eating the popcorn chicken.
