Menus are posted on the wall as you walk in. We chose jambalaya rice, salt and pepper chicken wings, and Korean wings. The jambalaya rice was full of shrimp and sausage and chicken. The rice was fluffy and well seasoned. The salt and pepper chicken wings came with thinly sliced fries and both seasoned well. The Korean wings were so tasty, full of flavor and there was plenty of sauce. I even put some of the sauce on my jambalaya rice! Everything came hot out of the kitchen. Maaan, I miss the Piedmont location of Monkey King.. But since it's closed I came to this location 2 times to dine in and both of my experiences were mid. I know better now to just order my food to-go if I crave it again. The customer service is never what you expect it to be. They will literally take your order while they are on their phone, and it doesn't feel like they acknowledge you or hear you. They also don't mention that they are ready to help you and just stare at you waiting for you to start ordering. Maybe I am picky and selective, but I usually don't approach after someone's ordering in case they need to quickly step away or finish the task they were working on -- I'm use to being called "next" or being acknowledged. They also don't give you a number or some sort of marker after they take your order, so it is easy for them to mix up orders which happened. Anyway, the food is always good and so I guess that will have to make up for the experience. The garlic noodles with salt and pepper tofu never miss and always hit. It's never too greasy or underflavored. The spicy korean wings are super good and flavorful too. Not too spicy, definitely a mildness to it, so you can handle it if you don't like something too spicy. Overall, I'd come back to pick up a to-go order, but I won't dine in person again. read more

Monkey King used to be one of my absolute favorite spots. We would literally drive from Vallejo to Alameda just to eat there. Unfortunately, after my recent visit, I can honestly say it is not the same restaurant I fell in love with years ago. From the moment we walked in, everything felt cold. The atmosphere was cold, the service was cold, and the overall vibe was completely unwelcoming. Then came the food, which was the biggest disappointment of all. The dishes we ordered tasted nothing like the recipes I remember. I honestly found myself wondering if there are new owners because there is no way this is the same Monkey King from years ago. What made it even worse is that I chose this restaurant to celebrate my son's graduation. We waited around all day for them to open at 5 PM because I was excited to share a place that used to be one of my favorites. Instead, we left severely disappointed. More of a fast food dine in or takeout and enjoy at the brewery next door spot. It feels like an indoor outdoor space and has an airy brewery vibe to it. Their specialty are wings but they have other dishes as well. We ordered the mango habanero wings (more sweet than spicy) with a side of tater tots. The tots came in a generous portion. Came here late night because it was one of the few places open after 10pm. Ordered the crab and garlic fried rice, green beans with tofu and the salt and pepper wings w fries. The fries were HANDS DOWN my fav and a 10/10. I'd order these again and again! Crab fried rice was good- not a lot of crab but good flavor. That said, I haven't had a bad fried rice and I don't think this had a wow factor. Flavor 7/10 but overall (due to lack of crab) 6/10 I was most excited for the green beans + tofu but they forgot the tofu. I love monkey king, always have. The music and lights are always a vibe. I'm a huge fan of the lumpia and the crab fried rice, full of so much flavor! My friend and I were greeted as soon as we walked in and were able to seat ourselves immediately at the bar. From there we were handed menus to look over as we waited for someone to take our order. My date and I wanted to have the hot 'n sour soup again. Thus, we dined there two days ago. He ordered the 10 wings. Instead they brought out garlic fries with 5 wings. I ordered the chicken laab, which was a generous portion and on point. The other two items were garlic noodles and soup. The service is still lacking. This time around they brought out the garlic noodles, the garlic fries with wings and the chicken laab. We waited quite a while for the soup. I have been to plenty of Asian restaurants for family dining. The appetizers and soup are the first things that arrived, followed by several entrees and dessert. Drawback: Truth be told. I hate reading those menus stuck on the table, and ordering the items from a mobile device is totally ugh. Food may be great. However, I still can't up the rating to a four star. We went here with the address linked on google but they did move locations just down the street but I wish they posted it on the wall it be easier. Everything is ordered on your phone and if you want drinks, you need to order in the front. Seems like more of a place that people usually pick up their orders because people were coming in and out rather than having a sit down. I went here with my friend after work and the food came out fast. I think some of the food was rather salty but overall pretty good. My friend and I really enjoyed the garlic noodles. It terms of the ribs, I didn't like it at all. It was rather dry and so salty- I couldn't taste much of the meat but just the batter. SMALLER PORTIONS OF THE SWEET AND SOUR FISH. Anyone that has previously ordered the sweet and sour fish, especially as a to go order knows that they use to fill the container nearly to where it could not close. Their portions used to be extremely generous, which is why I was so disappointed in finding out that they now only offer eight chicken nugget sized pieces. It's an obvious change that I'm sure other previous regular customers will recognize. I will say the flavor is the same, but it definitely doesn't feel as worth it as before given the amount and size of pieces they now provide. I ordered the crab fried rice and was really looking forward to it, but honestly, it tasted more like plain egg fried rice. I could barely taste any crab, and the flavor overall was underwhelming. I was torn between coming here and going to Taco Bell, and after eating this, I honestly wish I had chosen Taco Bell that's how disappointed I was. It's very loud since it's a pub and you order on the QR code. Garlic noodles - 1/5 didn't taste garlicky at all. Really just tasted like a chow mien or something. And it was so much liquid at the bottom of the dish. This was not done well at all Kimchi fried rice - 2.5/5 it barely had any kimchi in it. Was basically a regular fried rice with an egg on top. Back then this rice was orange...now it's brown. It tastes fine but it's definitely not kimchi fried rice Korean wings - 3/5 it's very sweet...kinda reminds me more of a sweet chili sauce vs a spicy Korean wing. Salt and pepper wings - 3.5/5 it's prob one of the better things we ate today but you can see all the msg on there coating the entire wing Calamari - 3/5 again the whole thing is coated in msg so it tastes good but ehh Overall I don't think I'll be coming back. You order through the qr code but it takes awhile for the food to come out. Garlic noodles were 5/5. They were chewy, buttery, and garlicky. Mongolian Beef was 0/5. Sooooo salty I couldn't take more than 3 bites. Monkey King fried rice 2/5. It had good additions like spam and chinese sausage but also very salty. Salt & Pepper Wings were 3/5. Nothing to wow me. This place is located in a busy area so there is only street parking with some parking garages in walking distance. I appreciate the late hours. My family and I came in for dinner on a Friday night and the restaurant was not too busy.The first thing I thought was strange is you had to pay as you ordered your food. then the first thing to come out was the garlic noodles. Unfortunately the noodles were under cooked and salty. After that it took around 45 minutes and the staff asking 5 times what we ordered before we got all of our food. This is a negative review for the following reasons. Monkey King was chaotic, loud music blaring to the point you had to yell to hear the peiole at the table and it was dark and dingy. The service was OK but the 10-14 dishes came out randomly and it was difficult to share because the tables are too long pass dishes comfortably. Unfortunately the noodles in the garlic noodles and another dish weren't cooked thoroughly and the beef was rough. Also, they only provided appetizer size plates for a dinner which meant food was spilled all over the table. The fried chicken wings however, were outstanding, as expected. I think we were the o lariat's eating there at the moment and coming from a group of Asians we can vouche the food was delicious and legit. My favorite was the salt and pepper calamari served with shrimp chips. The monkey king fried rice with spam and Chinese sausage was delish. I also liked the garlic noodles although it was more of a creamy garlic sauce and different, I liked it. The walnut honey prawns were typical, nothing outstanding. I ordered the Lemon Pepper wings, Lumpia, Dry Fried Ribs, and the star of the show, Garlic Crab Fried Rice. And a Thai Iced Tea to wash it down. The Lemon Pepper Wings were good and crispy, with a lot of flavor. I asked for ranch sauce, which went perfectly with the chicken. The Lumpia was decent, with a sweet chili sauce. The Garlic Crab Fried Rice was off the hook! Delicious, with lots of flavor, and crab in almost every bite. It was so good, I ordered another before I left! The Thai Iced Tea was the BEST I've ever had. It was made perfect with the right amount of ice. The only disappointment was the Dry Fried Ribs. No real flavor, and LOTS OF BONES rather than meat. I was thinking baby back ribs fried, but this is more like "rib pieces" but it has way too many bones. I wouldn't order it again. Overall, I had a great experience with good customer service. It didn't take long for my order, although I had to go back to the counter after 20 minutes because they forgot my Lumpia order. Looking forward to going back and trying something new. read more

Seemed like they either needed more help or the those that were working could have been more efficient with their time. We ordered: Salt & Pepper Wings & Fries - the main reason I know of this place. This was good, just the same as I remembered. Chicken Laab - disappointing, very salty and not anywhere near traditional Laab. We barely ate this and the portion was huge for an appetizer. Spicy String Beans & Tofu - good flavor, but had too many onions and I thought the carrots were a weird addition. Service was not great either. Not sure I'll be back anytime soon. We had shrimp with walnuts, which I have had in the past and was wonderful, vegetable fried rice, and calamari steak. The calamari was very tough and difficult to eat. There was no knife and my pork wouldn't cut it so I ended up pulling the breaded fish apart with my fingers. The shrimp was not as good as I have had at other places, bland, and the fried rice needed a lot of seasoning. I don't typically put salt or spicy things on my food, but I had to do something with this. The worst part was some music. It's a relatively small place and the music was very loud. When we walked in, we told the gentleman we wanted to sit away from the speakers, but it was still so loud we could barely hear each other talk. They don't serve green tea, just black. I haven't been to monkey king in years and it's the same but it's also changed. The wait to be seated is still kind of long I mean I only waited 15 minutes, so that wasn't bad at all. The person who sat us, had explain that if we wanted to order, we can either order with the QR code on the table or order at the bar or the back by the restrooms. It's kind of hard to order that way, because how will I know how much to tip my servers. I felt like I had no real server, someone dropped off my food and that was it. It was hard to get someone's attention to get more water or to get more napkins and to go boxes. Despite of the no service, the food was just as amazing as I remembered it to be years ago. I'm not a huge fan of breweries and pubs since I don't really drink beer but there were alot of food options here along with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages!
