Fun funky silly place to hang. The cartoonishly large grapefruit slide was actually very welcomed and I don't usually like grapefruit. Had it w vodka and tequila and both were great, the classic is a great drink.

Delicious drinks, funky atmosphere, friendly bartenders, and a great longstanding Oakland tradition. Five stars if you like grapefruit and dark dive vibes.

Van Kleef is an Oakland classic! If you haven't been, they're known for their fresh grapefruit cocktails! Usually greyhound but they offer it with different liquors. Nice little spot to get your buzz on.

Hands down the best greyhounds. Fresh grapefruit juice. We had a double and it was smooth and easy to drink. We enjoyed chilling in this bar. Unique atmosphere and friendly bartender. I'll definitely be back!

This is such a cool dive bar, the decor is unlike anything else I've seen before (super random but super unique) and even the tables look cool! The drinks are cheap as well, ranging from $10-12 for their grapefruit themed drinks which come with an actual large slice of fresh grapefruit! The vibes of Cafe Van Kleef were immaculate and made for a great environment to drink and chat. I'd definitely come back.

A group of friends and I ordered a round of greyhounds late on a Wednesday night. The bar was busy, but not busy enough where it was difficult to get a drink. The bouncer was fun to chat with and our bartender was an angel! The decor in this place is so fun. So many quirky things to look at. The drinks were super delicious! I would absolutely come back here if I'm ever in the area again.

We love a local watering hole with a signature drink! I first visited to Cafe Van Kleef years ago to try their Greyhound cocktail. I stopped by last Saturday and the drinks were just as delicious as I remembered. I loved seeing the bartender juice gallons of grapefruit to order. The bar is cool, cult-classic, and divey in feel. Great for dates or friends. It is easily accessible by BART and bus. I would 100% come back again!

This bar was such a vibe, but it was overly crowded, especially on weekend nights. It's a small place with a few bar stools, but you really have to squeeze in between people to be able to navigate the place and/or order a drink. They do have outdoor seatings, which I believe they are currently renovating to offer more space. Whether it is outdoor or indoor seating, I think this bar is worth a visit! The decors are quite unique and fascinating. Inside is dark but filled with colorful lights which makes a pleasant vibe to chat and drink. They specialize in greyhound drinks - specifically their Greyhound Classic. It is a vodka drink with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. I really enjoyed this drink especially because it did not taste like alcohol. The sweetness and freshness of the grapefruit juice really elevate this drink.

This guy was there for sure.

recently had the (dis)pleasure of visiting Cafe Van Kleef, an Oakland-based steam-punk themed bar that serves grapefruit. As a licensed psychedelic shaman, I am no stranger to unusual and eclectic environments, but this place truly tested my limits. From the moment I stepped inside, the smell of burning hair filled my nostrils, causing my eyes to water and my head to spin. As I looked around, I was confronted with a dizzying array of steam-punk gadgets and gizmos, fire-breathing Bhuddas, and animal heads, all flashing and whirring in a cacophony of noise. Despite my initial discomfort, the staff at Cafe Van Kleef were very nice and seemed to be in high spirits (perhaps a little too high, as they seemed quite drunk). They greeted me warmly and offered me a menu, which featured a variety of greyhound cocktails. I decided to give one a try, hoping it would calm my nerves. Unfortunately, the greyhound did little to quell my mounting sense of unease. As I sipped my drink, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched by unseen eyes. And as the night went on, the bar only seemed to grow more frenzied and chaotic, with the staff singing and dancing as they worked. By the time I left Cafe Van Kleef, I was thoroughly frightened and more than ready to return to the safety and sanity of my own home. While the staff may be nice and the greyhounds strong, I would not recommend this steam-punk themed bar to anyone with a sensitive disposition.

The atmosphere of The Lodge is very cozy. There's a fireplace in the middle of the room across from the kitchen and the overhead lights are all a warm, amber yellow. The music on the speakers get pretty loud in some parts of the space so its not the easiest to hold a conversation without raising your voice. Like most dive bars, you place your drink order at the bar and seat yourself. Food offerings vary depending on which establishment has their pop-up setup in the kitchen that evening. Be sure to check out their Instagram page to get the most up to date info on food. During our visit, Saap Saap Culture was serving up delicious fried chicken and egg rolls plates. As for drinks, my wife and I tried out two of their hot toddy's and we really enjoyed them -- absolutely perfect for the cold 40 degree winter weather outside. I also tried out their Modelo Chelada Michelada and ounce-wise, it was a ton of beer. Taste-wise, it was nothing special. The free pop-corn machine in the back was broken during our visit so we didn't have a chance to try it out. Overall, pretty chill dive bar that I wouldn't mind stopping by again. I like that they take card in addition to cash, and the bartender serving us during our visit was friendly. 3.5 rounded up to a 4.

Can't quite describe it but it didn't feel like an SF bar, felt more open and like a community watering whole. On to the food and drinks. I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. I've heard all the hype about Tallboy, so I had to check it out myself…read more I do think it lived up to some of the hype, but I think they could've used their space better. It is a unique layout to a bar, and probably better concept for earlier hours, when it isn't as crowded during the night. It can fill up really quickly, since the area to order a drink, dance, and mingle is narrow, since the bar is literally in the middle of the room. Some of the staff can be extremely nice and kind, and there are some who you can tell are fed up, upset, and don't have the best attitude. I get it, though. It's a cool bar to check out or be the first stop of the night. The djs they have always turn up. Good luck getting a drink under 15 minutes though!

I visited La Loulou several months ago and wanted to give it some time before writing a review…read more After recently having a wonderful experience at another wine bar, I realized the difference in hospitality was too significant not to mention. I really wanted to like this place. I'd walked by several times and loved the interior design, and the videos on Instagram made it seem like such a great spot. I stopped in one evening by myself, ordered a glass of wine and the warm olives (which were delicious), and was looking forward to a relaxing night. Unfortunately, the service was the biggest disappointment. The restaurant was packed, and the atmosphere felt more concerned with maintaining an image than making guests feel welcome. I understand some restaurants embrace a more reserved European style of service, but this came across as cold and pretentious rather than intentional hospitality. As a solo diner especially, I didn't feel acknowledged or valued as a guest. It also didn't help that the dining room had a noticeable body odor smell that took away from the experience. On a positive note, the bathroom was clean and beautifully designed. I originally thought this would become my go-to place to grab a glass of wine while waiting for a table at the ramen spot next door, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Reading through other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one who had this impression. Oakland's charm has always been its people. You can open a French-inspired wine bar, but hospitality translates into every language. If you're going to bring a Parisian aesthetic to Oakland, don't mistake indifference for sophistication. Guests should leave feeling welcomed, not judged.

The 4 stars is really because although the food looks pretty, I would say everything tastes okay, nothing really stood out particularly in taste. If this review was based on food tastes alone, and not looks, vibes, and the great show, it would've been 3 stars. The flautas were a bit too hard for me. Ive had way better flautas at El Torito's in San Leandro. Although there were only like 6 of us total in the audience for the show, it was still really enjoyable. The host, Tony Parker has great energy, and a lot of the comics (I think were like 5 or 6) had us laughing throughout. No one was safe lol.
