There is no food served there and I believe you can BYOB, but there are plenty of place to eat along University, if you make this a date night or night out. There are some tables, and chairs toward the back, otherwise it is couches and other odd and ends furniture to sit on. It was great and the history of the place is great as well. I will check out some other shows there too. If you are a fan of Yoshis, it like that minus food and more intimate.

Lots of food vendors, stages, etc, but the best thing I like about this Festival is the Oakland vibe. Every time I go, it reminds me of Festival At The Lake or Hip-Hop On The Green. Especially near the main stage when the main artists are doing their thing. This year was no different. Yes, the $15 entrance fee and $5 parking was higher than last year, but it was worth it to me, I don't mind paying if I'm enjoying myself. Keep doing you Oakland!!!

And unlike the SF Mortified event I attended last month where most seats were reserved, this one seemed to offer ample seating first come first served, as well as a lovely outdoor courtyard with even more seating. Sound and lighting were ideal. The guest band, Hot and Dangerous, were hilarious and used lots of unconventional instruments along with catchy and comical lyrics, in between journal readings. They did amazing on stage, even though I missed the house band I saw at the previous show. There were bars on both levels, and just a small line at the downstairs bar before the event started. An hour in, there was no line or waiting at all. I tried one of their cocktail specials, the new parish punch, and absolutely loved it, strong and fruity with just a hint of spice, seems like they make good drinks here. Also, we arrived when the doors opened, an hour before showtime, and there was plenty of parking available just a block away.

Our kid did summer camps at BPH every year and they are now part of the youth production. BPH has become their second home. The staff are deeply caring and supportive. Kids are incredibly kind, passionate about musical theater, and supportive of each other. It is a wonderful community where our quirky theater kid found their tribe and has a sense of belonging. Being different is celebrated at BPH. I highly recommend their camps and youth programs to kids who enjoy performing on stage.

I am so proud to have invited Lilan Kane to perform at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive's (BAMPFA) Winter Celebration this past Tuesday, February 20. To give you all a little bit of a background to this event, BAMPFA hosts seasonal celebrations about three times a year to celebrate all of the exhibitions we have on display within a given season. These events are very important to us because we invite our closest donors and members to thank them for all of their support and usually welcome 400 guests. So as you can imagine, entertainment plays a big role in our festivities. Here at BAMPFA, we loved everything about working with Lilan and Hella Fitzgerald. As we began making event preparations, our planning staff all appreciated Lilan's professionalism and diligence in making sure that the logistics worked well for all parties. She was very punctual, responsive, and ethical in addressing all of our needs and made our event planning process that much easier by choosing to work with her! We were all in for a pleasant surprise the day of our event. Lilan and her bandmates were all punctual for their sound check and instantly emanated a sense of warmth and kindness to each of our staff members as soon as they arrived. Throughout the night, Hella Fitzgerald played fun covers of current songs, adding jazzy spins to hits like Havana by Camilla Cabello. All of our guests had a wonderful time listening to them! I worked at our check-in desk and lost count of all the members that approached us complimenting the band. Aside from Lilan's amazing voice and the talent each of the bandmates had, one other highly positive trait they collectively all had was their unwavering energy throughout the night! I could tell that they were giving 110% of their effort in each of their songs, up until their final song in their set. Overall, I think Hella Fitzgerald was a perfect choice for our event because of their amazing talent and professionalism. It was such a delight working with them and I highly recommend others looking for entertainment for a special event to choose Hella Fitzgerald as well. The band is clearly invested in providing a wonderful all-around experience for their clients and I have no doubt that they will bring life to any place they perform. read more

What an amazing and talented ensemble! We recently had the pleasure of having Hella Fitzgerald play at our wedding (5.12.18), and we are so incredibly happy that we did. Our band was led by Natalie and Tasche, who were both incredible musicians with loads of energy, enthusiasm, and charisma. All of our guests RAVED about the band. They definitely set the perfect tone throughout the event: for the ceremony Tasche played lovely and well timed renditions of two classical pieces I requested, the cocktail hour and dinner featured a selection of their jazz, swing and blues cannon, and the reception was brought to life with their incredible soul, funk and contemporary selection. I requested they learn a new song for our first dance, and their rendition was so far and above the source material I had sent them. Both Natalie and Tasche have such beautiful and powerful voices, and with each song I was blown away. Their range was so fluid and impressive! Lilan, the band leader, was the epitome of class and professionalism in her communications with me, and her correspondence was always prompt. She checked in with me multiple times before the event, and her planning shone through in the effortless flow that characterized the event. I made a few last minute requests for the break music, and she graciously accommodated them. If you are considering a live band for your event or wedding, do yourself a favor go check them out live at one of their many regular engagements! We were already wedded (haha) to having some live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and their prices were extremely competitive compared to those of a short engagement band and typical DJ. Our reception was made SO SO SO much better with their live music and energy. Any wedding DJ can play the same top 40 hits for your reception, but none can compare to the enthusiasm, musical talent, and pure JOY that you will experience with Hella Fitzgerald at the helm. read more

Hella Fitzgerald was the perfect band to play at our 100 guest wedding at the General's Residence. Beginning with the piano concertos for the ceremony, through the duet for the cocktail hour, and then the entire band letting go for hours of dancing, Hella Fitzgerald never missed a beat. Lilan Kane was terrific to work with on both the configuration of music and musicians for each set and the selection of music. Based on a special request, Lilan even performed flawlessly a Turkish ballad. As a wedding planner, I would absolutely recommend working with Hella Fitzgerald! Our team had the pleasure of working with Natalie on the office side of things and she was incredibly organized and accommodating when it came to the event's timeline which we always appreciate when were trying to manage 10-20 different vendor schedules. Come wedding day Kimiko was the band leader and she was absolutely fantastic! The entire band was so easy to work with; they were professional and above all, FUN! I've worked with Lilan many times in the past couple of years and I can say with confidence that you won't find organic talent mixed with professionalism to this high of a degree anywhere in the Bay Area. Her music is inventive and technically progressive in every sense. Lilan and her team are always highly responsive, punctual and able to adapt quickly to the circumstances of each job. I had 3 specific song requests dedicated to the moms, my dad, and my uncle, and the band really delivered. They prepared the songs and performed each so beautifully. The wedding day itself was a little unpredictable because we had many (many!) shifting components to the schedule, but Emily and the rest of the band members handled all the changes with ease and grace. When planning a wedding or other large event with so many different complex elements like ours, you need vendors who are organized, experienced, proactive, empathetic, fabulous at communication, flexible, and completely on top of their game. Emily and The Cosmo Alleycats exceeded all these. Trust me, you'll be grateful to have someone like Emily on your side as you're planning your event. If you need it, she'll hold your hand and walk you through how their music can complete your day and your plans. She'll provide just the right amount of guidance - as much or as little as you need. And I haven't even started talking about the music!! Trust the band's videos on their website and other samples elsewhere. As I was looking at potential performers for our reception, it was quite difficult to tell whether a band's video/produced performances would match their live performances. The Cosmo Alleycats sound just as good, if not better, live. Emily has so much stage presence and is wonderful to watch. And the really nice thing about choosing a band that has played together for years is that they already know how to play together to make the best music (some bands are thrown together at the last minute). We got married in the summer of 2023 and below is an account of the things we noticed. When we reached out to Jessica following the wedding and reception, we initially received a response which included a rebuttal to each of our observations, but when we followed up with two more emails about how we were open to rectifying the situation, there was no response. 1. The incorrect song was played for the bridal processional. We are willing to take partial credit for this mistake, as Jessica has a clause in her contract which states that all music must be available on iTunes. While we mistakenly assumed that the version of our song was on iTunes, we don't understand why Jessica didn't tell us beforehand that she had trouble finding the version. We would have sent an mp3 to her right away. Instead, she played a different version of the song and as a result, the part that we told her to fade into did not line up with our version and the fade in was awkward. The mishap started things off differently than we had expected. It impacted me (bride) on a personal level because of the emotional aspect of finding the "perfect" processional song. 2. Our first dance song was cut in half unexpectedly. We double checked that the questionnaire we filled out for her indicated that we wanted it to fade out at 1:52. Instead, the song faded about a minute in. We were very confused (as guests could see on our faces) and were disappointed because we had practiced a lot for our dance. She responded by stating that we gave her a "look" to express that we had stage fright and she faded out early. Neither I nor my husband looked at her during our dance. We also never discussed a "look" with Jessica, so we were even more perplexed when she brought that up. We were smiling, looking at one another, and having a great time until the confusion came. 3. Much of the music from our playlist(s) was not played. As in, almost none of the music played was from our playlist(s). We indicated specific "vibes" that we wanted in our music and that wasn't followed. We don't remember hearing most of the music we indicated for cocktail hour or dinner and neither did our guests. We think we heard a couple of songs for open dancing, but just a few. She responded by stating that we might be surprised about songs we simply missed because we were away at photos and whatnot. We asked her to send us a list or screenshot of the playlist to confirm, but did not receive a response. 4. We spoke with her over the phone about her playing the role of "emcee" in addition to DJing. We hoped that meant she would take initiative to check in with us about making announcements, hyping the crowd, etc. From our perspective, she did not present with the energy level we were hoping to see. This may have been a personal preference on our part, but her presence as a DJ was more on the passive side as compared to every other wedding we have attended. Ultimately, we would have gone in a different direction if we could go back. We are not the type to leave a less than stellar review for a service, but we feel that it's important to have the things that we regretted laid out as objectively as possible.
