After our meeting, Richard selected Jayson from his lineup of DJ/MCs as the person who would be the best fit for us (since he was personally unavailable that day). Jayson has a friendly demeanor, he thoughtfully guided us through lines of questioning to determining exactly what our vision was and how he could bring it to life, and boy did he absolutely crush it. It was important for us that the DJ be a powerful guide for the evening, but also part of the background, in so far as they helped facilitate the timeline and pump the crowd, but don't make the day about them by taking too much on the mic etc. Jayson understood our needs with enthusiasm, nailed our request for music types, and did a great job at reading the room during party time. I've struggled a bit with deciding whether to leave a review for Richard. Ultimately I was left pretty disappointed with his professionalism at our Piedmont Community Hall wedding 2 weeks ago. Pro's: - Reliable leading up to the wedding, including offering calls and a music preference form for us to fill out before the big day to discuss all our key songs and genre preferences - Sound quality was good (lapel mic for officiant and wireless handheld mic for my husband and I to read vows) - Richard let us connect our audio recording device to his output which was helpful so we could make a DIY wedding video for our overseas/elderly family who couldn't attend - Service included three locations in the standard pricing - Willingness to learn "Hey There Delilah" on guitar - a song that is special for me and my flower girl niece. Unfortunately trying to get a 3.5 year old to "hang out" near the dance floor long enough for Richard to transition to this song proved to be harder than expected and we weren't able have our special dance. I don't fault this to Richard though - toddlers are tough to predict - I hired samba dancers (Aquarela Samba - highly recommend) to surprise my husband as a way to kick off the reception. Richard was helpful in keeping this secret, initiating surprise, and playing the music supplied by the dancers - Setup and take down were mostly smooth Mehhh: - Song selection during the open party dancing portion. Started out strong (coming off the heels of surprise samba dancers), but after about 1-1.5 hrs most guests had left the dance floor. Maybe it's the songs we told him we wanted to hear, maybe it was poor ability to read the room, maybe people were just tired. Who knows, every wedding is different - Richard prefers a strumming guitar style, and mentioned he's not as trained in finger style/finger pick guitar. He mentioned to us that he has a stronger focus on wedding singing than guitar. Not the end of the world, but would've been helpful to know when we were booking to set expectations - MC timing to release tables for dinner could've been faster Cons: - First dances were a shit show. Shortly after our speeches, we let our guests know we were headed inside to cut cake. We intended to go straight from cake cutting into first dances without delay - this was clearly laid out on our very detailed timeline which was provided to Richard a few weeks before the wedding. Minutes after finishing the cake cutting, Richard rushed up to me (the bride) freaking out that he didn't have our father-daughter dance song. On the form we filled out weeks ahead of our wedding, I noted this is very special moment for me and my dad - my dad doesn't typically dance and he went through hundreds of songs to find the perfect one for us. I was disappointed Richard waited until the last minute to tell us - something he should have figured out before the wedding. He proceeded to demand access to a wifi hotspot so he could download the song. This song was readily available on Spotify (his preferred platform), so I'm not sure how this detail got messed up. Also not sure why he was bringing this issue to me when we had a day of coordinator. My bridesmaids stepped in and helped provide him a hotspot, but it did cause a delay - During the Father-Daughter song issue, Richard accidentally started playing our first dance song. I assume it was next on the playlist and he was busy dealing with the missing song and didn't even notice it came on. The song came on unannounced when we clearly weren't prepared as we were still dealing with the hotspot. My husband had to tell him to stop playing our song until we were ready - Richard failed to handle the stressful situation and claimed we were moving OUR night along too quickly. I imagine this wouldn't have been an issue if he had prepared the correct songs to begin with - Richard practiced pronouncing my husband's foreign last name (Ilinykh - "ill-in-ick"). He did fine in his practice just 5 mins before the grand entrance. But butchered his last name (pronouncing it "ill-een-eeka") when announcing our grand entrance. There isn't even an A in his last name. I could tell his family wasn't thrilled about this - During our prep call, Richard said he only needed ONE table setup (for the indoor dancing space) and he would bring his own setup for the outdoor ceremony location and dinner spaces. At the end of our call I even double checked with him to ensure he only needed us to supply one table. On the day of the wedding, he said he actually needed TWO tables - an additional one for the dinner space. Luckily our coordinator was able to make it work, but this should've been communicated properly before - Didn't have access to a popular Drake song (God's Plan) that my hubs requested, only had access to an odd non-original version While some of the cons were things that were memorable (obviously not in a good way), I do think Richard means well. read more

Ok..I wasn't going to write this review b/c I believe in giving people the benefit of doubt, but Richard insulted my intelligence & kindness ... SO HERE I GO! I reached out to Richard over a year ago after falling in love with his experience/TheKnot reviews. I reached out to get a consultation & his response time was immediate. I loved that! Upon booking our consultation, my fiancé & I agreed that Richard would be a great fit for our March wedding. Unfortunately, that ceremony was pushed to October due to COVID. Fast forward to the week of our wedding, we sent Richard our suggested playlist w/ artist (per his preferences, not songs) w/ our timeline. We didn't hear back from him until a few days before the ceremony citing "coming off four weddings & he was just getting back into the swing of things". We said, no problem & continued to manage last minute wedding stress. Wedding day comes... it's 95 degrees outside & he decided to set up his laptop under a tree to run his music. Now, keep in mind he had a full A/C set up inside where the reception is being held & he can see the ceremony from all angles. Imagine this " ladies & gentlemen I now present Mr & Mrs X" and you expect to have an exit song but instead you hear the DJ say "my laptop overheated!" Well sir... that's an AMATEUR MOVE! (1st issue) 2nd Issue: You see the Bride & Groom at the bar & you just give an excuse & say "thank GOD your family improvised". No I'm sorry or nothing. I had to walk out to my FAMILY SINGING "MY GIRL". How embarrassing! 3rd Issue: During the cocktail hour Richard played songs & artist that were not on our song preference sheet. I heard soooo many whispers about the songs, but I chose to ignore them b/c I'm taking hundreds of photos in 95 degree heat. 4th issue: It's time for my husband & I to take sunset photos & at this point it's HIS JOB to keep the party going. But we come back to what I would call elevator music & our guests looking bored!! We even had some guest leave !!!! 5th issue: It's time to dance & he is still playing HIS PREFERENCES even though my family, venue manager, wedding coordinator, bridal party, best friends & a host of other people gave him song suggestions & he IGNORED EVERYONE's request citing "sometimes you have to jeopardize a song for the right transition". ( I can't make this up ya'll). I too ask him, along with my husband to play our list & he is clearly irritated. At this point, the wedding & dance floor is DEAD! We are all pissed off, so we leave an empty reception dance floor to play games outside. 6th Issue: It's time to call it a night & it's the perfect time for me to address my concerns. Richard stands with his arms folded (aggressive body language) & had a rebuttal for every ounce of feedback I'm giving & says he " couldn't get into his performance because your guests kept asking for request!" . I'm sorry sir...but if you're a DJ of 10 years (his words, not mines) you should've been able to read the floor/room & figure out how to lift the energy. During this entire conversation, I'm doing my best not to insult his business or attack his personality. However, his ego & arrogance definitely did not sit well with me. I said my goodbyes & said I'm not into trashing people on SM platforms b/c it's not what I do. 7th Issue is the "Straw that Broke the camels back": We're loading up our car & speaking to our remaining guests. Richard's car is parked next to ours & he's loading up. I guess he thought it was wise to insult my intelligence by stating AND I QUOTE " Are you guys paid in full? I think you still owe me money?!" I politely respond with "yes, I paid the final balance 2 weeks ago, per your contract via Venmo & we discussed that in our final call!" He turns to pull out his phone & tell me how much I paid, when I paid & that I still owe him. (At this point, I'm livid with his arrogance & ignorance to being unable to accept criticism after I've paid you over $2k to play elevator music at my wedding.). I said "check your Venmo!" & walked away. He is still trying to debate that we owe him. Richard was our Wedding DJ in early January 2015. And, let me tell you, he kept the party going all night long! We'd definitely recommend Richard for your wedding (or party) too. He did a great job of listening to our tastes and desires (80s and 90s throwback w/ a sparse mix of current jams). He played 90% throwback stuff which we really liked and got the crowd moving and did a great job of reading the crowd. At one point, he came out ask polled my friends (leading the dance party) to see if they had any wishes. I think possibly something by Bel Biv Devoe resulted. During the lead up to the wedding, we had what I'd characterize as an appropriate amount of contact with Richard. He was available and checked in occasionally which was cool for us. We also created a Spotify playlist to give him a feel for our tastes and he used a good bit of that for our cocktail hour, which was perfectly fine with me. Additionally, Richard was a great MC. He kept things moving and had all of the appropriate equipment to perform those duties (two wireless mic set ups). No complaints there...Also, generally a cool guy. Richard did an amazing job at our wedding. We did not want a bunch of cheesy party games or call outs at our reception--just someone who would focus on the music and making sure our guests were dancing. We were also looking for someone who would make our ceremony feel special without resorting to a quartet or string ensemble. We looked at several DJs but didn't really feel a connection with any of them. However, after we listened to Richard's mixes on his website, we set up a meeting. We met for an initial consultation and he immediately clicked with both of our musical tastes--hip hop and indie. He was game to play our processional song acoustically for the ceremony. Two weeks before the wedding, we got in touch with him, and he sent over his pre-wedding questionnaire (names, order of reception/ceremony, genres, etc). We added several more specific genres and examples of songs we liked. Richard was extremely accommodating. The day of the ceremony and reception, he arrived on time and dressed perfectly for the occasion. Our ceremony was outdoors, and unfortunately we had some issues with wind. Richard was very accommodating and suggested a microphone setup that would minimize picking up wind for our officiant and speakers. He nailed the processional song, although it was a little hard to hear over the wind. He also suggested playing a recording of the recessional song instead of doing it acoustically which was a great suggestion. Overall the ceremony went off without a hitch. None of our guests complained about not being able to hear, and all of the microphones worked great off the bat. Due to the weather, we had to shift the cocktail hour indoors, which Richard was accommodated easily and professionally. He quickly put on an outdoor mix as well as an indoor mix. The volume was perfect and it did not overpower our conversations. Both mixes were spot on--the exact vibe we were going for. We both loved going inside and outside and recognizing songs or artists we put on our list. Richard was great with announcements. He introduced the bridal party without a hitch. He set us up to borrow the mic for a quick toast and thank you. His dinner mix was on point as well. He hit the exact mood we wanted. Again, the volume was perfect--just enough to be heard, but not hard to talk over. For dancing, Richard really nailed it. He kept the dance floor hopping the entire night. He did just an impeccable job shifting between various genres and moods without any awkward pauses or floor clearing songs. We had several older guests at our wedding, and we were worried that the music might be too fast, but they were dancing all night long. Richard played a great mix of older and newer songs, and each song just felt like it belonged. He worked in songs we wanted as well as classic ones we didn't know we wanted to dance to. We trusted him to put on a great show, and he absolutely did not let us down. Overall, Richard was great to work with. We gave him guidance with our genre and song picks, but let him do his thing and he really nailed it. We asked him for a mix afterwards, and it was great listening back to it. This review is long overdue! Aaron DJ'd our home wedding last September and we could not have been happier with how everything turned out. During the first phone call, he totally got our vibe. We didn't want anything cheesy, we just wanted people to have a fun time without sticking to only top 40. We kicked off the night with David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and ended the night with LCD Soundsystem's "Dance yourself Clean." I requested "I Believe In a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness and that was hysterical-- people had a lot of fun letting loose. The whole evening went off without a hitch and all of our guests had a blast. Richard was the DJ and audio setup person for our wedding in October 2021. In summary, we give him high marks for talent, but low marks for professionalism. Read on for more. Pros: - Value for money: Richard managed mics and audio for the ceremony. He also played a 30-minute live acoustic set during cocktail hour, and performed a 1.5-hour DJ set. He did this for a reasonable price, and at a price point which set him apart from other DJ candidates. - Dance floor: Richard kept the energy up on the dance floor with a good Bollywood set, and took requests on the fly. - Bounces back: Made some mistakes (more below), but came forward to say that he messed up and would push forward to make the day work. Cons: - Communication: Communication broke down under pressure. There were some requests during the week of the wedding that got frayed between Richard and others in the wedding party. I had to step in and find a solution while balancing everything else already going on. It took extra 1-on-1 conversations to mediate, and shook everyone's confidence a bit in how smooth the wedding itself would roll out. Which brings us to.... - Ruined audio for ceremony: The wireless mics that Richard set up failed during our ceremony. This was obviously disruptive to the ceremony, but what was really heartbreaking was that it ruined the audio for the videographer (who was running through Richard's soundboard) as well as for the folks in the audience. As a result, the audio for the video recording for family who couldn't attend (due to COVID or health reasons) was awful. And the ceremony audio for those present was glitchy for much of the ceremony, and mostly inaudible for folks in the back. This was crushing news, as we had put so much time into a one-of-a-kind ceremony. - Organization: Despite communicating our preferences on multiple documents, Richard played the wrong version of Hava Nagila as well as played EDM (which we had specifically listed as a style we didn't want played). More significantly, however, we had to remind him, in the moment, of the order of the dances (he almost skipped past our first dance). - Customer service: Communication was fine the months preceding the wedding. Richard was prompt and courteous. However, in the week leading up to the wedding and the week after, it was at times not pleasant communicating with Richard. Things would go from calm to aggravated in a way that we definitely did not see with other vendors. We recognize that everyone is coming out of COVID facing obstacles, and that this is causing strain across the board. But we honestly didn't feel like we were getting back the empathy that we were putting out. Many conversations felt like Richard was focused more on shifting blame than addressing the problem. Part of the mistake was our own focus on party over professionalism. Looking back, we hired our DJ -- who happened to be Richard, but I could see the following applying to any DJ -- largely based on the positive reviews focusing on dance floor energy and value for money. But a wedding is not a dance party alone. What we didn't factor in was that a wedding is a high-stakes event where things need to go right. At our wedding, things did not go right, to the point where we had to spend parts of our wedding day managing others' mistakes and trying to keep things stable. Little mistakes are to be expected, but big ones really add up. Bottom-line, many folks did not get to hear our wedding ceremony and are pretty aggravated about it. They want to leave 1-star reviews, but we don't think that's fair. To resolve things, we spent part of our honeymoon figuring out how to piece together scraps of audio and sending it to confused family members so that they didn't misunderstand our wedding ceremony (understanding the full content of the wedding ceremony was crucial to making both cultures feel respected). So, our big advice? If we could do it again, we'd focus on hiring a DJ that reviewers found to be a stabilizing and reliable presence. Don't deal with the extra stress of a mangled event if you don't have to. We give 3 stars because Richard delivered on some items, and didn't deliver on others. The blowback is not something he intended, but it is nonetheless something my spouse and I now have to fix. read more

Towards the end of the night, the cops showed up due to a noise complaint and Richard worked with the venue staff to make sure the party could keep going. We hired Richard for our November 6 wedding in Half Moon Bay for both his DJ/MC skills and acoustic guitar/singing, and couldn't have been happier! He learned 2 new songs to perform during the processional (the Adele version of Lovesong, and John Legend's All of Me), and he performed them masterfully (from what I can tell, since I was a tad distracted :-) ) His MC'ing skills were great - including his advice on breaking up the toasts, and a few other things. And he was very helpful whenever I came over to ask that something be announced. Hi DJ'ing was perfect! People were dancing up until the end of the night, non-stop. I didn't hear any of our "no play" songs and definitely heard our special requests. We had such a blast dancing to the music he played!! Richard DJ'ed our wedding this past September. Our experience was slightly tainted for me for one main reason. Richard took it upon himself to cut my father daughter dance after about 25-30 seconds. I assume he did this to move things along, but that was not the time. My dad and I have had a tough past and he had been looking forward to that dance for a long time. My dad also took his time to pick out a song that he thought was perfect. Yet most of the song wasn't even played, so it ended up being pretty meaningless and disappointing and that's a moment we will never get back. We were running behind for a thousand reasons, but he could've at least asked me how I felt about it first. Another thing is that the first song he played to kick off the dancing portion of the night was on my do not play list! Wtf. Besides that, the guests enjoyed his acoustic set during cocktail hour and music during dinner and dancing. He has good taste in music and did take our song selections into consideration for the nights playlist. My advice to future brides/grooms would be to communicate your priorities and the things that are important to you as clearly as possible, and hire a coordinator to keep the schedule on track. read more

Richard was really outstanding, both on the acoustic guitar and as a DJ. We booked him for our wedding, and he played exactly what we wanted and kept the energy going. He even learned a song for us (by request), and catered his acoustic set to our interests. I would have paid more than he charged - he was one of the highlights of our wedding. I didn't think that I wanted a DJ. We were doing a Sunday morning brunch wedding, and was pretty set on hooking up a Spotify playlist to some speakers. Then I met Richard at the Lovesick Wedding Expo. He was friendly, chill, and didn't seem like he would be a cheesy DJ. Once I learned that he did acoustic music, I was sold. We requested that he learn two songs for our wedding: Elton John's "Your Song" and Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." The latter song was sort of an inside joke between my husband and me, and we thought that a slowed down, mellow version would be the perfect first dance. Richard's rendition of "Your Song" was beautiful, but his version of "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" was incredible. We're actually a bit disappointed that we don't have a recording of it, because he nailed "slowed down and mellow, without the cheesiness of the original" perfectly. We would give Richard 5 stars based on this song alone, seriously. Not only was his acoustic music absolutely fantastic, but he did a really great job at emceeing as well as DJ'ing. He was able to fit in a lot of the songs that we had asked for, and we got a lot of compliments on how fun the music was even when we weren't dancing. Finding a DJ was one of my most daunting wedding planning tasks. My husband and I both love music, and while our tastes are pretty broad and varied, we're very particular about what we like. We knew we wanted someone versatile and not too cheesy. We wanted our guests to dance all night, but we didn't want to hear a lot of cliche wedding songs. Straight from the beginning after talking with many other DJs and musicians I knew he 'been there, done that' so they say and gave us extreme confidence he could pull off anything we had in mind, which was a tad more than simply a rockin' DJ who knew how to get people to dance. Richard was recommended to me by a mutual friend and I am so glad that the connection was made because he was fantastic! We hired Richard for our wedding and from the first meeting I knew that I no longer had to stress about the music because he totally got it. He took the time to really discuss with us the kinds of music we wanted to hear and offered suggestions when we weren't sure what we wanted to have play at certain parts of the day. He even threw in some Croatian songs after my mom emailed him with a list of 40 (!).
