Yoshi's is always a joy to visit. From my entry with the staff behind the counter welcoming us all the way through to the concert. Everything was great. The atmosphere and ambiance of Yoshi's restaurant is always relaxing and welcoming. The decor is beautiful! Vanessa was our server. She managed quite a few tables very well. I love that she introduced herself, welcomed us and shared menu items. The tiger shrimp was flavorful and delicious! The Spicy Miso Chicken was not spicy to me at all. The chicken was very moist and tender. The sauce added an extra layer of flavor. Those potatoes were so good! I'm not sure what they had that made them a little green, but again, they were so good. Wow, I made it. My train was late, but when I checked Rhonda made up for it. I got two tickets. One for the 7:30 show with early seating and for the 9:30pm show. After my last visit with the medical issue In the audience I didn't want to take any chances. Both shows of Kevin Ross are excellent. I didn't make my reservation, but Rhonda gave me table 4 & I sat with three other concert goers. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with broccoli & carrots over rice. Also got my usual of Kyoto Loco. It was satisfying after that long train ride. The house was packed & it was a great vibe. Kevin Ross is not only a singer, songwriter, composer, and producer; he is also a great entertainer. He was all over the stage. He want walked around the audience visiting fans way in the back. He stood on edges & serenaded a few females. One the second show, he grabbed my hand & gave him heart shaped sunglasses. If you seen Kevin Ross perform, then you know he always wears matching heart shaped sunglasses with his fits. I came here on a Thursday evening for Stella Cole with a party of 6. It was a cozy place covered with tables and even a tatami area! I ordered the Spicy Miso Chicken, Snow Monkey Roll, and a Gelato trio along with getting a bite of the Kobe beef skewers + rib eye. The chicken was pretty salty and felt the sauce was unevenly distributed but it paired well with the mash potatoes. The mash potato's were very creamy and flavorful! By default, the dish itself was just chickens and mash potatoes but I did wish it had some form of veggies as well. I'll probably keep note and just order veggies additionally. The ribeye and skewered were great! Super tender and flavorful. I definitely preferred it over the chicken, haha. The snow roll was good and the tempura in it wasn't overpowering. Gelato was pretty average, didn't stand out to me. I really liked the banana gelato. The jazz club was fun and cozy! Sound was super crisp and clear. Fabulous night of delicious sushi even though we were part of a very Katy party (80+) the waiting staff was attentive. We went on to the jazz club where desserts were served. It is a spacious place with a more intimate part for smaller parties. If there's anyone playing at Yoshi's that you want to see, stop reading this now and go purchase tickets. Try to overlook the excessive junk fees and forget about what you paid sometime before arriving. Next, reserve a table in their restaurant and show up early with your tickets in hand. This is your ticket to obtaining excellent seats. Yes, there's an easily achievable minimum restaurant tab to get you into those great seats but when the house is open you can waltz over, cocktail in hand, and take your seat. In this instance, it was a table in the second row from the stage for The Sugarhill Gang. Nobody asked me to spend any more than I already had but in the nightclub, a server happily supplied water (and another drink) when asked. Dinner tabs are closed out at the end of your meal; tabs for whatever you order during the show are closed out shortly before the end of the show (18% tip automatically added to those tabs). The dinner menu is very good and satisfying, with a wide range of sushi and other Japanese-adjacent fare. Service is especially wonderful, with the whole place operating like a well-oiled machine. Seats in the show (as mentioned in my ealier review) are front and back of a round table with another party on the other side of the table in the same arrangement. Awkward for a date and worth knowing but not in any way a deal breaker for me. On each of my visits to Yoshi's I've been impressed but now that I've tried their restaurant and reaped the concert-seating benefits that's the way I'll roll every time. Beautiful night at a beautiful venue with incredible food. Im counting down the days until my next visit to Yoshi's. I love that Yoshi's is a one stop shop for entertainment and food. One half of the venue is an amazing restaurant while the other is to witness incredible music. Arrived on time for my 7:30pm reservation and was seated right away. Super pro tip - get a reservation! This place was HAPPENIN' Ya hear me?! There were tons of folks eating, drinking, celebrating, and having an overall good time. The food was absolutely incredible: Nigiri - Had a combo of Hamachi, Salmon, and salmon belly. Easily some of the best fish i've had in a while. So fresh and the salmon was fatty, buttery, and delicious. Caesar Salad - This was a miso caesar with a mix of kale and, romaine, parm, and wonton chips on top. YUMMY. Miso Cod - Out of this world! So good! And went perfectly with everything else I had that day. And the music was amazing! After our meal, we headed to the music venue portion of Yoshi's. It's an upscale night out but very enjoyable. 5/5 Lychee martini was well balanced and also a good strong pour from the bartender. Not very sweet and enjoyed. Most cocktails were $18 4/5 Rainbow Roll Sushi was fresh tasting and pretty good. There was a range of rolls from $12-20 and this was a higher end selection I wish the concert was more than an hour long, it seemed a bit short. I've been contemplating writing this review for a few months. I wanted to give a raving review as most of the experience was great. Anyhow, we had dinner first for a party of 9. The restaurant itself was a nice atmosphere. We ordered salads, appetizers, sushi, entrees, desserts, and plenty spirits/cocktails. Our server, Owen, was on top of his service. He was great with suggestions and checked on us often. The food was a bit pricey but expected. Nice presentation and food was good. For the show afterwards, we had a booth with a great view. It was a good time. Good vibes and all. The service was there as we kept the drinks coming. My only thing that knocked two stars down was the host. Which I think his name was Chung. He was absolutely rude and had such a condescending attitude towards my party when they were checking in. If you're a host, act like it! Had dinner at Yoshi's Oakland on Mother's Day before the evening show. We ordered the calamari, spider roll, fire dragon roll, warriors roll, and avocado maki. The calamari was definitely my favorite! Loved how lightly fried it was, and the jalapeño sauce was such a nice touch. The sushi rolls were on the smaller side and felt a bit too rice-heavy with not enough filling. After dinner, we headed into the music venue side of Yoshi's to see The Best Intentions and they were incredible! One thing to note: seating is assigned by the venue and can feel pretty tight since tables are often shared. read more

Ah...Yoshi's has been a pillar serving the community of Berkeley and later on Oakland for decades (originating in 1972). "One of the world's most respected jazz venues, earning a reputation as the Bay Area's premier location for great Japanese cuisine and jazz music." I was first introduced to Yoshi's because I took a Music Appreciation Class and had to attend 2-3 shows to earn a grade. Ambience: Elegant, modern Japanese decor. It's a fairly large restaurant. Parking garage closeby which Yoshi's will validate your ticket, saving you a few dollars. The music venues is like a little stage with small round tables and booths to sit at. Food: Hotate Edamame Risotto: pan seared scallops, sweet corn, edamame, risotto; edamame-shiso sauce (3/5). The scallops were juicy and had that nice crust on it. The risotto was just meh. Togarashi Kurobuta Pork Chop: Okinawa sweet potato puree, roasted apples, carmelized apple veal-jus (4/5). Tender, juicy pork. The mashed puree was good. Ginger Blossom: ginger beer, cherry juice, lemon, dash bitters (3/5). I liked my drink though it had a lot of ice in it. French Fries and Sweet Potato Fries (4/5). A big basket with crisp fries. The sweet potatoes were a bit soggy or soft. The Jazz venue was Peter White with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala. It was more Christmas music but with some of their songs they wrote. Omakase and a concert! That's how we sushi-roll! I came here several times and had a great time each time. We saw Taylor Daynes and Sheena Easton on different dates. I love the intimate feel of the venue and how you feel like your getting to know the singer up-close. Every seat in the house has good views of the stage, so, no matter where you end up, you'll have a great time! We always eat here so we can get better reserved seating for the show. The last 2 times I came, we ordered the Omakase to share. I thought the sushi, sashimi were fresh and enjoyable. The ribeye and broccolini was good too. I have to commend on their bar service, the lychee-tini was vodka forward, which gave me a good-a_s buzz! Service has been great as well. However, they have jumped on the bandwagon and started charging 3% surcharge fee on the meal. I don't believe in this fee, I rather they incorporate into the food. I mean come-on!! We pay for tickets w/fees to watch the show and we have to pay gratuities for the food. This BS fee culture needs to go away! NOTES: They validate parking at the lot. Japanese food and a show is my type of night! I've had this place bookmarked for a while, and decided to go as a last hoorah before the year ends. My friend and I snagged discounted tix a month in advance for the 9:30pm show, and made 7:30pm dinner reservations. Parking: There's a parking garage connected to the restaurant, which you have to get validated for a discounted price. We spent $14 from 7pm-11pm. Restaurant: I was amazed at how big this place is! We got two different rolls, an appetizer, tea, and dessert. Service was quick and we actually got seated at 7:15 even though our reservation was at 7:30. I'd give the food 3/5 stars. The mocktail we got was also too sweet for my liking. The restaurant has a lot of seats, I was overwhelmed with the amount of people there were. It was crazy packed and the bathrooms were too full. Show: A pretty big venue! Again, it's crazy packed with people while waiting in line to get in. For seating, we were lucky enough to be seated at the very front simply because we made dinner reservations, so it's like a first come first serve basis. I actually would've preferred a little further back as being in the front is a little too close. I came to see Boney James, and the show was so entertaining! Such a fun crowd, and it was nice to do something different outside of SF. The band had so much personality, especially when they did their solos! I was highly impressed. Tables are fairly small, so I'm glad we ate beforehand. Typically jazz shows tend to be very compact seating, but it did feel too close as we were sharing the table with another party. First time seeing a show here. I loved it! When I bought my ticket I didn't realize that I'd be sitting at the show with other people but it turned out great. We were all fans (of XTC). The band tonight is EXTC. It's the drummer from the original band, Terry Chamberlain, and three new guys. They played an excellent show! We've enjoyed coming to Yoshi's to watch our favorite artists and we look forward to sharing their delicious food. They make it easy to get your seating assignment for the show and coordinate the timing of your dinner reservation. A parking structure is in the same building and you get some hours validated too. The dining room while packed had a comfortable feel. The big glass windows allow a view of the passing train. Noise level does not get too loud though. It just gives you a down to earth vibe. We shared a leisurely meal. For starters we hang out at the bar and had some Yoshi's Fries which was a mix of freshly made Russet & Sweet Potato Fries. First time here for dinner and to watch the 7:30pm MonoNeon show! We got tickets ahead of time ($40 ish - usually depends on how big the act is) and had dinner reservations for 6:30pm. If you come here for a show, make sure you dine in (better if you make reservations) and get seated in the restaurant at least an hour beforehand - it will save your seat for the show so you don't have to rush! They also serve sushi and drinks at the tables inside the music venue, so don't feel like you need to stuff yourself. Our order: I got the encore cocktail, a lycheetini, snow monkey sushi roll, duck confit spring rolls, king shrimp tempura, a bunch of nigiris (salmon belly, salmon, maguro, unagi, hamachi), as well as a yuzu creme brulee and gelato duo for dessert. They gave us one of the desserts for free for my husband's birthday which was so kind. Fun place. Pretty good food and good for groups as its rather large., Although I remember the quality being a little better 5 or 6 years ago. Our server was great, very on top of it and proactive. The appetizers like the yellowtail and tuna carpaccio were really good. The fish on all the dishes was good. Same with the salads. The seafood ramen was not good. The shellfish and shrimp and salmon were way overcooked and tough and the broth was spicy with really no other flavor. Steak skewers and risotto was pretty good too. Had dinner at Yoshi's for a fundraiser event with all you can eat buffet. It was delicious - Kobe beef, tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, hamachi sashimi, assortment of other entrees and appetizers. The minus 1 star was due to the assortment of sushi was underwhelming. Service was superb as servers were attentive, and friendly. We have seen Keiko Matsui, Raheem De Vaughn, Musiq Soulchild, Norman Brown, Anthony David, Lee Ritenour to name a few !! Absolutely love it !! The food is always amazing the Japanese restaurant! Depending on who's performing sometimes this venue has seats other times it's standing room, pay attention before you purchase a ticket. For Anessa Strings everyone has a seat! Their Dinner & Show tix were on sale on Black Friday, so my friend and I booked the tix for Boney James. We made a reservation an hour before the show started. I've been going to Yoshi's Oakland for decades, but after this experience, I won't be returning. My party was seated exactly where our names were placed. Staff approached us and insisted we were in the wrong seats. We calmly showed them the name markers, but were still told to move. It was later confirmed to be their mistake, they were trying to accommodate another party. We were willing to adjust. The issue was the complete lack of apology or accountability. Instead, when I calmly asked for acknowledgment, I was labeled "aggressive." For people of color reading this, you already understand why that matters. Being respectful and clear, yet still being characterized that way, is not a misunderstanding. It reflects how you're being perceived. What's more concerning is that ownership doubled down, defended staff behavior, and refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing, even after being given the opportunity to address it directly. This isn't just about a seating mix-up. It's about how you're treated when you advocate for yourself, and whether a business truly understands and respects the community it serves. Cute place for a date night! Rolls were a little pricier - ranged from $11-25. If you'd like, you can also watch some live music. The night I went, tickets were $49. It's a little fancy, so feel free to dress up! We were sat immediately on a Saturday right at opening (5:30). Service was really nice! Our waiter knew the menu super well and was able to recommend different dishes in each of their menu's sections. There's tons of tables, but not packed together too tightly. This review is for the live music venue. There really isn't a bad seat in this place. Small intimate feel, so don't be loud & drunk here :) There is table service inside with a limited menu. Great drinks, good sushi, nice service. There is not really a dance floor, which is tough depending on who you are seeing play. I found a spot near the far wall so I wasn't in the way of the servers. I did dance in front of my chair a few times, but have to duck when the servers come by. We arrived for a 5:45p reservation on May 17, we were seated promptly and our server was Fiona. She was a nice lady, and I am not sure of how busy she was but we often times had to call her by name to get something that we needed at the table. I ordered the kale and baby Romaine Caesar salad, snow monkey sushi roll, and japonese. The shrimp and scallop Kikage fritter and Brussel sprouts were ordered as well. All food was very tasty except for the Japonese, which I never received, and the brussel sprouts which were just okay. We also came for the jazz artist Eric Darius, so the restaurant has an option for a reserved table seating after we eat. I'm conflicted on writing this review. I really wanted to like this place, since I'd never been here in the 45 years living in the Bay Area. We were gifted tickets to see Stella Cole, and had dinner at Yoshi's before the show (dining there guarantees you reserved seating in the venue). The atmosphere in the restaurant area and in the venue was really good. Light and airy in the restaurant area, and cozy in the venue. Note that you'll be packed in, both restaurant and venue. Tables in the restaurant are quite close together, and you may be sharing a booth seat with others (we sat in a booth with 2 others). The service in the restaurant was so-so, kind of slow - more on this later. Venue service was good. The Aka Miso Calamari was fried well, but the pieces were really small, and had a hard time really tasting much squid. The Duck Confit Spring Rolls were a disaster. Although fried well, the rolls were thick, and you couldn't taste the duck. When I pulled apart the roll and just ate the duck/carrots, I could taste the duck. The Hotate Edamame Risotto was actually pretty good. Scallops were great. The Togarashi Kurobuta Pork Chop was disappointing. The purple sauce and apples were ok. I requested the pork to be cooked to medium well. It was closer to medium. Juicy but not what I was expecting. What was really annoying was that when the server brought our fork-necessary entrees, he didn't bring any forks or knives (we just had the chopsticks on the table). We had to ask a couple of servers to bring us utensils. I noted that the table next to us also ordered fork-necessary food, and were also given the food minus utensils. Also had to ask servers for utensils. This was unacceptable. We felt ridiculous sitting at the table, with our food, staring at it, unable to eat it (my husband did start in on the risotto with his chopsticks), waiting for utensils. In the lounge, we ordered the Banana-Nana-Na dessert. It was ok, but seemed pretty basic. The high point of the evening was Stella Cole. She was fabulous, and that was really a great show! I made a dinner reservation at Yoshi's Oakland specifically to improve my seating for a show, since I wasn't able to get VIP tickets. I arrived early when the restaurant was nearly empty, yet somehow I was the only person in my section who didn't receive a seating ticket. Guests who arrived after me were seated ahead of me. After asking my server, Irene, I was told my seat had essentially been "lost" and they needed to "find somewhere" for me to sit. I ended up with a significantly worse seat than others who came later. When I tried to address this privately, I was treated as if I might leave without paying, which was completely inappropriate. The manager, Nick, was dismissive and condescending, focusing on the fact that I didn't have VIP instead of addressing the actual issue. No apology, no accountability, and no real attempt to fix the situation. I even asked about adjusting my future reservations after this experience and was told that wasn't an option. Yoshi's is two things, a decent live music venue and a shitty overpriced restaurant. If you can avoid the food, absolutely do so. The descriptions are fancy and the prices are very high, but you're getting nothing better than shopping mall food court crap. The drinks also suck, and service is very very slow. As a live music venue, Yoshi's is fine. They get some great artists in, sound quality and visibility are decent, and the ticket prices aren't too bad. So I give the place one star for the restaurant, and 3.5 for the music. Unfortunately they require people to eat the shite at their restaurant to go to at least some shows, making a potentially good experience very mixed (and VERY expensive), so I couldn't in good conscience give the place the 2.5 stars it really deserves. read more
