Pay at the counter, fill up your drink, and then wait for your number to be called -- that's the general order of business here. Business was a bit slow during my visit, so I was surprised that the order didn't arrive more quickly, but the staff was also kind enough to deliver the tray to my table. My sandwich seemed a bit smaller than expected but was otherwise on par with my expectations, and the accompanying cup of tater salad was a highlight in itself. I came in for lunch recently. It has been a while since I've stopped in, but it was convenient and I was meeting a friend. The service here is good. Everyone is nice, the place is clean, and it's located in a great spot. I ordered the Bang Bang chicken wrap and a side of pasta salad. Here is another great lunch spot conveniently located to the Hiram Ward Federal Building as well as the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Center. The food must be good because there are always at least 2-4 deputies eating lunch. I have yet to have a bad experience and have been quite satisfied everytime I have visited. read more

It was my first time checking out Downtown Deli in Winston. A great casual option for lunch if you want a place to either dine with friends or alone like I did. You order at the counter and they give you a ticket with your number on it. While you are waiting you can grab your drink & select your seat. There is a very nice worker there who comes by and checks your ticket number and will bring the food right to the table. He even stopped back by and picked up my tray when I was finished. I had the French dip sandwich, which was roast beef and cheese on a hoagie with au jus for dipping and homemade chips. I personally would not get the French dip again but the homemade chips were good! I am looking forward to visiting again, trying something new and hopefully revisiting my rating. read more

Lunch today at Downtown Deli. Let me start with what was good. Super friendly helpful staff. The restaurant was very clean. The ice tea was really good and fresh brewed. I wish I could say I loved the food but I did not. It wasn't bad just nothing special. My husband got the Nathan steak sandwich and I got the John Luke described as a grilled Turkey sub. The bread was small for a sub roll and mushy like a hotdog roll. It came with lettuce and tomato but had very little of either on the sandwich. He got the house made chips and I got the fried green beans. Again it was just ok. Probably won't go back. I've had better at subway quite frankly and there are too many amazing sandwich shops in town to try again. read more

But for the price and the size of the sandwich I can think of three other shops where I would get double the food and two of them are sandwich chains. I spent two days in Winston-Salem on business and discovered this gem on my last day. I ordered takeout of the #51 Deacon Sub and #43 Flounder basket. The order was ready when I arrived after the 10 minute walk from my hotel. The flounder was the best I've ever had. It was a generous portion and was not at all greasy even though it was fried. The basket came with a generous portion of fries, what tasted like homemade tarter sauce, and a side of very good coleslaw. The Deacon Sub is grilled and looks to be delicious (I am taking it with me to the airport for later), and it also came with a generous portion of fries, which will not make it to the airport. I wish I had found this restaurant sooner as they have an extensive breakfast menu as well. The next time I'm in Winston-Salem, this will be my go to place for great food. read more

Downtown Deli is always reliable. You walk in, order at the counter, pick a seat or take it to go. It's quite busy between 11:30 and 1pm, but the push out the food rather quickly.it can be a bit loud, but it's typical lunch crowd, so I wouldn't expect anything different. I usually get Scott's favorite (seared tuna steak sandwich) which is quite fancy for a deli, but it's delish! It's seasoned well and cooked perfectly. However, I got the half chicken salad sandwich and chicken pot pie soup the last time I was there. (See checkin photo). The soups and fried hot chips with ranch are always a winner. The salad that I've had was shredded iceberg, so........I could've left that. My team had breakfast catered from here last week and it was fantastic. The bacon was crispy and the grits and scrambled eggs were PERFECT. I'd never had there breakfast, but I will definitely visit more often!! read more

A really good lunch spot. Although it is a little pricey for an everyday deli lunch, it's definitely worth splurging once a week if you work downtown. Downtown deli is only open on weekdays for breakfast and lunch, and they have a HUGE selection. You can upgrade your side to fried green beans for a little extra but it's really good, the house chips with ranch are also great! My boyfriend really enjoys all the sandwiches and I'm a big fan of the BLT because they really do stack it. The salad bar also seems to be pretty popular which makes a lot of sense for the business lunch crowd. The 4 stars is for it not being open on the weekends and the sometimes long line, but there is always plenty of room to sit and the staff is great! read more

Was super busy so I decided to order from Downtown Deli through a food delivery app. I decided on the classic order of chicken tenders with a side of fries because a restaurant is only as good as it's tenders. The order was a little smaller than I anticipated as the to go box was barely halfway full. It came with your choice of honey mustard, BBQ sauce or ranch for the tenders. I chose the honey mustard and was pleasantly surprised as not all honey mustard is created equally. It was a little more liquidy than I would have liked but tasted like it was homemade. The tenders themselves were decently sized and came with 5 in the order. They were cooked well and didn't have an overpowering taste of cooking oil that many seem to have. By the wait to just order and the full tables, this place apparently pumps out some good food. I had a terrible time deciding and just went with the salad special that day. I love shredded lettuce, cucumber, onion and a meat for a basic salad and they delivered. Both of my friends had a different sandwich and inhaled it. They claim it was good. I hit up Downtown Deli maybe once a month. My usual go to is the Lauren's on Wheat instead of Rye. This consists of Turkey, Pepperjack cheese, lettuce, and honey mustard. While I do enjoy the Lauren's, I'm frequently jealous of the Burgers that I see people getting. Today I tried the Bacon cheeseburger. It was pretty darn good. Nice size for the prize that you pay. I got sweet potato fries. They were average. They are served with Honey Mustard. The service is pretty standard not speedy fast but definitely not slow. There are guys who will come by and offer refills repeatedly. . . almost too frequently for me. The place has a sports bar feeling with the ambiance which might be a bit out of place in the Womble Carlyle building. I'll continue to stop by Downtown Deli in the future but it'll be a tough decision between the Lauren's and the Burger. read more

Received my order from Downtown Deli, much thanks to Takeout Central for delivering! Ordered a Nathan's Cheesesteak with extra American cheese, no mayonnaise, lettuce & tomato on the side, please. Side of a house salad with bleu cheese. Although they got the special requests right, I'm not gonna lie - it wasn't great. Wasn't bad, just not my idea of a good cheesesteak. Strike one was ORANGE American cheese. The horror! Strike two was the meat. Reminded me of Steak-umms. Flat, and very little meat for the price. If you're looking for a more genuine option, Elizabeth's Pizza is the place to go. Also ordered a Reuben on Rye with fries - just in case the first choice wasn't up to snuff. Thankfully, their reuben was much better! Good amount of pastrami on the sandwich, fries were crinkle style and just average. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal. I'll enjoy the leftovers tomorrow. I went to Downtown Deli with a group of co-workers for a quick lunch and was pretty satisfied. I hadn't noticed it before because it's a bit tucked away on the first floor of an office building, so it hadn't occurred to me to stop by. With that being said, I'll likely be back again soon. The menu is pretty extensive and they offer a nice variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, and other deli type items (which I suppose is no surprise given the name). Our table got a variety of things including a taco salad, the black bean burger, and "Lee's Special." We all cleared our plates and there were no complaints, so I take it that my co-workers' meals were decent. It's a pretty spacious venue and you'll see a decent amount of people cycling in and out as you eat. The portions are perfect for lunch, and actually might be a bit bigger than necessary if you've had a nice breakfast beforehand. As far as prices go, I don't recall seeing anything on the menu over $10. Most of what I saw was in the $7-8 range. Overall, I was impressed with Downtown Deli. The food and service was great and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. I'd recommend it for lunch! read more

We ate lunch here on September 10th, 2016 around noon. It's a small space with about 6 booths and a counter with stools. I ordered a muffuletta and was not disappointed. The sandwich was a large portion and has the perfect balance between meats, cheese, sauce and bread. The sauce was crisp which enhanced the the sandwich's flavour. Fantastic lunch. My daughter ordered a Reuben sandwich and it was done very well. The main sandwiches were wonderful but I don't want to forget the sides. I had the broccoli salad. It was a perfect mix. Raisins, bacon, mayo, vinegar, and broccoli. Perfect. My mother got the potato salad ( and the muffuletta as well) and was extremely impressed. She said it was creamy with a bit of a tang as it should be. We highly recommend that you find this place and enjoy. Their dishes are made from scratch. They also have pies and ice cream. I ordered a hamburger and received a hockey puck with literally 2 -- count them -- 2 shreds of lettuce and a tomato that was sliced so thinly that you could hardly tell that it was a tomato. Eh, it's good enough for what it is - a place to get away from the office and have a simple lunch. There's a large menu, but it seems to be dominated by greasy sandwiches and diner food. The service is moderately quick - it's easy to be in and out in under an hour, but don't expect it to be speedy. If you order something from the grill, it may take 15-20 minutes to get it at lunch rush. I've had their sandwich/soup combo with a half chicken salad sandwich and coup of vegetable soup. It was good, but the sandwich was a little better than the soup, which was very tomato-y. I recently had one of their summer specials, the Fusion burger, which is a turkey burger fused with vegetables and brown rice. I use yelp on a regular basis. But I've lived here for eight years and never looked up Downtown Deli's rating. I went with a friend right after we moved to town and it's been one of my favorites from the beginning. So I was shocked when I decided to look at their reviews today and saw it was just three stars. I'm not saying this place is the pinnacle of all delis, but it's certainly my go-to in the area. Maybe I'm easily swayed by the ability to get fried green beans as my side. So be it. They are delicious. I get them every single time. I'm not ashamed. I also have a soft spot in my heart for their servers. They are helpful and kind and I don't care that it takes a minute for the food to come out. Try Scott's favorite or the flounder sandwich if you like fish. The Reuben is also very good. Ordered a chili dog last week. How can you mess up something so basic, right? Brought it to my table and there was basically no chili on it other than a light brushing of chili. OMG! I just had the best experience here! My coworker and I came at about 5 minutes to 3pm today and they advised us they were closed. We walked away but stood outside for a moment thinking where else we would go downtown. A guy came out and asked us what we wanted and invited us back in to order. That literally meant they had to fire back up and already clean grill just for us. I think I've eaten there three times now. Went there yesterday hoping for a good salad. The salad choices, not good. I do remember I had tried the taco salad a while ago- it was not delicious. Finally decided on the tuna sandwich. Of course all the tuna is put in the middle of the sandwich so it looks like there is a lot there when it is cut, but the edges have nothing. OK, so I waited almost a year and tried the place again today. Service was better and the food was good. They told me to take a seat and someone would bring me my order. Super, sounds great. I sat and waited, and waited. All the while listening to a big guy talk sports as loud as he could to everyone that would listen in the dining room. So loud I couldn't hear the TV that was right in front of me. Now if I read this I would say, loud really? I mean it was LOUD! After a while I gave up waiting and went to pick up my food myself. I got it, ate and left. On my way out I notice the LOUD talker taking food from the counter out to other people.
