Tried Hero House for the first time and ordered the Italian cold cuts. As much as I wanted some buffalo wings after smelling the sauce on another customers table, I wanted to stay traditional for my first visit. This Italian sub is out of this world!! Staple Winston establishment, for some reason it's been years since I've been here. Great lunch spot and they seem to do a lot of to go orders to. Busy main road but they have a parking lot and the space inside is big and has plenty of seating. Clean bathrooms too ! I met a friend for lunch and I had to study the menu as it is big !! As always with Greek run places my go to is always the chicken souvlaki. This one didn't disappoint. Stuffed with fresh veggies and nicely marinated chicken pieces and a really nice soft pita and great tzatziki. Great lunch fix. My friend had the hamburger and fries. Which she loved . Good traditional burger on a brioche bun. Really good fries ! They are nice and crispy and hot!! Service was a tad but slow but they were busy. I saw them cleaning a lot so that was nice to see. Nice staff not super friendly but not rude either ! Great little place for everyone as the menu is vast and everyone can find something . I liked the that the food was so fresh. Hero House is a Winston Salem staple and a favorite for many....my sister swears they have the best souvlaki in town! It's my go to when I want a quick but consistent take out experience. Menu is extensive and varied but I suggest sticking to the Greek food for best overall experience. And if you haven't tried their falafel, you should! It's clear that they've worked hard to provide good food, portions and prices with the challenges of increasing costs and I appreciate the fast efficient counter service, value and consistency that they provide. For this visit we ordered the chicken skewers platter(items packaged separately to keep hot and cold foods apart), chicken souvlaki sub (small), and fries. OK! So my Man and I drove by this place a few nights ago. He told several tales of his youth that included this glorious restaurant. Needless to say, we made a special trip into town for lunch! I had the Italian Sausage with an extra side of marinara! The sub bun held up the entire time! The sautéed onions and peppers swimming in the sauce was perfection! The slices of Italian Sausage had tons of great flavor! This sub was Devine! My Man got his favorite Italian Cold Cut toasted nice and hot. I had two bites! I could not pick which sandwich I loved more! The fries were meaty and fried to perfection! Not greasy! Just perfect! BTW- their ketchup is not watered down! Makes the fries taste even better! I have been a loyal customer of Hero House on Stratford Road for over 20 years, which is why this experience was both shocking and unacceptable. On my recent visit, I called in my order at approximately 1:28 p.m. and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. After that time passed, I went inside, paid for my order, and waited patiently. As time continued, other customers came in after me and were assisted, while I remained standing there without any update or acknowledgment. By approximately 1:55 p.m., I was still waiting. Another customer even pointed out that my order should have been next because they had been watching me stand there the entire time. That alone speaks volumes. When I finally asked about my order, the individual presenting themselves as the manager checked briefly and then told me I would need to wait an additional 15 minutes. After calling ahead, paying, and already waiting far beyond the original timeframe, that response was completely unreasonable. However, what made this situation unacceptable was the way I was treated next. Instead of addressing the delay professionally, I was told I could no longer return because "every time you come in here, you have an attitude." That statement was not only false, but inappropriate and unprofessional. I had not raised my voice, caused a disturbance, or disrespected anyone. I had simply been waiting--quietly--for an order that was significantly delayed. To be publicly confronted, spoken to in that manner, and dismissed as a customer in front of others was disrespectful and embarrassing. After supporting this business for over two decades, I did not deserve to be treated that way. Let me be clear: delays happen. What matters is how they are handled. In this case, there was no accountability, no professionalism, and no respect shown. This experience raises serious concerns about how customers--especially long-standing ones--are treated when something goes wrong. I hope ownership takes this matter seriously and addresses both the lack of service and the conduct of management. read more

We have wanted to try this place for a while and finally decided to check it out. We arrived just after they opened at 11am on a Saturday. Parking was easy because they had just opened. They must have a following because there were already people in their cars waiting for them to open. As we entered the tile floor in the entryway with the Hero house logo caught my eye. I thought this was a nice touch. After walking through the second set of doors it is much bigger than I expected from the outside. We were able to easily determine that customers place their orders at the counter. We proceeded a bit closer so we could easily read the menu. We were greeted by a young lady and we told her we needed to a bit of time to look at the menu. We tried to stand back so others could order and I saw they had menus taped onto the wall nearby. The paper menus also had descriptions of each menu item which made it helpful. I took pictures of the descriptions to add to this review. The overall menu was much more extensive than we anticipated. They have Hero's, deli sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta, wings and desserts. We went up to the counter and my wife chose the Deluxe Club on whole wheat and I decided to try the "8c" Philly cheesesteak with grilled onions, green peppers and American cheese. We also ordered their onion rings because we had read reviews from a local Facebook group stating they have some of the best onion rings around. We were given a receipt and found a place to sit while we waited for our number to be called. They have quite a few tables and booths and we saw at least four TV's in the dining area. Our number was called shortly after we sat down and we went to the counter to pick it up. Arriving at the table, everything looked delicious. We sorted out the trays and tried the onion rings first. We can honestly say, although very good, these are not the best onion rings we have had in the area. The onion rings had a fully coated batter, more soft than crunchy and would be better with more onion flavor. Everything else we ordered looked awesome! My wife loved her club sandwich and I really enjoyed the cheesesteak. The meat was chopped just right but I do wish it had more cheese. The sandwich itself tasted ok, however, I wish the chicken on the sandwich was breaded like a true chicken parmesan and not just grilled. We also had to try their homemade cake while we were there. This menu HAS EVERYTHING. A lot of sandwiches and pasta dishes. We had two 8 inch sandwiches and spilt a large side of potato chips. Both of us took half of sandwich home. Service is a walk up counter, with very attentive cashiers. Bus your own tables. A few tvs around the dining area with some March Madness games playing with no sound. I have passed Hero house probably a thousand times in my life but yesterday I finally decided to give them a try. I had the Philly cheesesteak with grilled onions and while I usually enjoy a Philly Cheesesteak in the traditional style, they had the option of getting lettuce, tomato and vinegar on top as well so I gave it a shot. It was a solid sandwich. I enjoyed the lettuce and vinegar a lot more than I thought I would and everything was seasoned very nicely which I appreciated. As far as Philly Cheesesteaks go, it was one of the better ones that I have had in Winston-Salem. The cake was average as far as Carrot cakes go, the frosting was the highlight for me. Only con I had for them was that the bottoms of my cakes were a bit burned on each layer. The inside of the restaurant is definitely showing it's age and it some spots could use a bit of a deep cleaning. Overall if I was in the mood for a sandwich, I would much rather give them my business than to a large chain. read more

This place used to be a hot spot for a good lunch although their prices have always seemed too high for a sandwich. I wanted to try something I hadn't had there before so I ordered the fried flounder sandwich and my husband ordered the cheeseburger sub. We also shared a side of sweet potato fries. I know it's been difficult for businesses to find good staff lately, but our cashier had zero personality and mumbled into his mask so much that I couldn't understand a word he said. A little training goes a long way here. On a positive note, our food came out quickly and it was nice and hot. The cheeseburger sub only had Mayo as a condiment so we added some ketchup from the bottle at the table. It was good and filled that craving for a burger we both had. The fried flounder sandwich had a great panko crust on it. I loved the thick tarter sauce and pickles and slaw added a nice crunch. The sweet potato fries were hot and crispy. I mostly took away stars for the cleanliness of the restaurant. We sat near the window and looked to the right where there was a bar with some stools you can see where there had been tape to allow for social distancing but has been removed. The grime is still clearly visible on the bar and the walls, tables, windows, mirrors were all visibly dirty. Maybe they need to have a cleaning party and use something stronger than water to cut through the build up. I'm not sure how they keep their A health rating. I just didn't want to linger and I don't think I'll go back again if this is what they consider clean. The food, although hot wasn't remarkable enough to be somewhere I need to eat since I can find similar items at many other places in town. Sorry Hero House, I hope you see this and do something about the general cleanliness of your dining room. These are where your guests sit and notice these things. No matter how clean your kitchen may or may not be, where your guests are sitting during their meal, is getting a long look from them. It matters a lot. read more

Almost 11 years since my last review, so definitely time to add an update. They really do have some of the best sandwiches in town. Their bread is delicious. I had the chicken Philly and it was full of flavor. My husband loved his chicken parm with onion rings. Sandwiches come a la carte so you can add the side you want. I had their yummy tomato bisque. Only downside this visit, I asked for extra meat sauce and it appears that they put me down for less because my spaghetti was practically dry. Let's discuss the onion rings. They are perfect. The best onion rings I have had anywhere. They are perfectly breaded, perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. Crispy and when you bite, the onion inside is tender. The best part is the breading stays on the onion. I hate when you bite into a onion ring and it pulls out from the coating. Never happens here. Ordered a cheesesteak, onion rings a grilled cheese and fries kids meal also a slice of red velvet cake. I swear I usually would not complain and eat what I got but this was not good at all. Everything was really bland. The fries didn't seem cooked all the way the onion rings were extremely big and the breading just crumbled off the onion in the bag. The cake, lort this thing was dry almost tasted like it just came out of the freezer. The cheesesteak was ok but if it wasn't for the condiments it would've tasted really plain. The only thing we enjoyed was the grilled cheese which those are pretty hard to mess up. I do think they need to add a bit more seasoning to their food and maybe slice their onions a bit thinner. Work on the batter for the onion rings so it actually sticks. Also the cake, don't know what can be done about that but it was bad. I spent $30 on the food and with prices getting out of control I felt I needed to speak up. I reached out and they told me I can get a different side next time on them but they were supposed to reach back it to me about a refund on the $7 slice of cake. They have it in different ways with mushroom, green peppers, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, but I went for the deluxe which has it all. The meat was on point and flavorful. The hero is a decent size, not really big.. They also have a chicken version. I also got a side of fried zucchini sticks that were good but a bit salty. This place offers a great selection of hero's & sandwiches as well as sides. If you want dessert they also have gelato. Will definitely be coming to try out other items. If you're looking for cold deli sandwiches go elsewhere. Their style is toasted bread, hot sandwiches. Ordered a standard turkey. Bread was stale and dried out - no wonder they serve toasted. Not fresh and soft. Menu says you can have on bread of your request, but don't expect to get a sub roll. You will not get the side that comes with it then, as punishment for the bread change. There's nothing stated about this. Also nothing listing available bread types. Cheese is $.89, and they don't have sliced cheddar, so if you are looking for it, expect a handful of shredded cold cheese on your sandwich without warning. No refills on your own, so you have to navigate the front staff and line. Unless you want tea. I imagine due to cost. Service: Couldn't hear the staff talking our order. Made us feel very unwelcome as first time guests navigating the menu. Rushed and everything was very regimented, not hospitable. This place serves one of the worst Philly steal and cheese sandwiches I have ever encountered. First, the roll they use is insipidly bland and doughy , like Wonderbread. It was baked this way as the meat and "cheese" inside did nothing to make it moist.The meat was dry, poorly seasoned and not much there. Third, who in their right mind uses American cheese on a Philly ! The onion rings were of a decent portion size but bland as they could be. To ad insult to injury they charged me $23 for a large sub and large onion rings. LAMB GYRO - YUM Today I stopped by Hero House for lunch. The parking lot was full and there was a small line. I was served quickly and received my food within 10 minutes of order. I had the gyro and fries. It was soooo good. The lettuce, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and Tzatziki sauce added freshness and balance. The lamb was hot, yummy, and perfectly sliced. While waiting on my food, I look over the menu. It's is huge and overs a wide variety of sandwiches, entrees, salads, and desserts. Oh and the staff is awesome too!!!
