I had an awful experience here. I brought in a dress to have the sides taken in, paid $30, and it came back still way too big. When I politely explained that the alteration wasn't done correctly, the owner refused to fix it or offer a refund. I wasn't rude or raising my voice, yet he kicked me out of the shop. Now my dress is ruined, I'm out the money, and I still can't wear it for my trip tomorrow. Extremely unprofessional and poor quality work. The older man was incredibly rude. I was trying to get my jeans hemmed, because they were too long. I've never done this before so I'm not too sure what to expect or if there's certain rules. Anyways, he's adjusting my pants and he was like, "Why are you wearing sandals? If you're gonna wear shoes with these pants it'll be a different length." I told him it was fine like I didn't mind it, but he had an attitude. I asked him another question about keeping the original trim of the pants. And he just rudely told me it'll be 30 dollars more. Fast and amazing service!!! When I first walked in, I wasn't sure if they do women's dresses or not because I didnt see any, but I was so desperate so I took my chances. Best decision ever! The first time i went, i forgot my shoes and he could have just take my money and trimmed the way i thought i wanted, BUT, he didn't. I came back the next day with heels, and he measured it with precision and the dress was practically ready the following day! The dress was one size too big (it was gifted to me). I'm so upset, this place will never have my business. Brought my daughter to get her dress tailored for homecoming, which fit her a little loose and she wanted it fitted. I could tell the man was already annoyed when we showed him the dress because it was a sparkly lace, but he could have just said he couldn't do it instead of what he did say. He had her put on the dress and as he was taking it in, all he kept saying was "Look it's not a lot of fabric, she just wants it tighter and it won't look nice." Excuse me? I don't remember asking you what your definition of nice is? But whatever, I kept my mouth shut and just let him do his thing because I just wanted to get this done. He kept on with his stupid comments about how he thought the dress fit fine and she just wanted it tighter which he kept repeating. Well no s**t she wanted it tighter, that is why we are here... that is the point on getting it tailored!! I was fed up because at this point he is making my daughter feel bad so I said "Well if you don't think you can do it then it's fine." He said, "Yeah just take it somewhere else" and walked away. Leaving my daughter standing there with all the pins in her dress which I had to remove myself. Rude as hell!! He is very lucky I respect my elders because I was furious! He needs to learn some respect also! I didn't come here to ask your opinion about what you think looks fine according to your standards. I came here to get a dress tailored the way SHE wanted it. This review is solely on calling to know about pricing and time frames. I called only to ask an average price on alternating a bridesmaid dress (height only) and he was so rude. He mentioned how he has to see the fabric (which I totally understand) but he was not very helpful. He didn't give me a price range or time frame - not even an average or to get an idea. He just said no and hung up! I had called another place nearby and they were able to tell me an estimate over the phone. They asked how many layers the fabric was, chiffon, and a time frame. They asked by when I needed it done (in the event that they couldn't finish it, they would let me know). Not this place - how do you expect people to go when you can't be nice or helpful over the phone. Worst part was he hung up on me after he said "cant - have to see fabric, good bye". Unbelievable. A better response? "I apologize but I cannot give you an estimate until we see the fabric. Usually the prices range from x to x dollars depending on the fabric and the layers. You can come today and we can take a look at it and give you the estimate and try to have it ready for you as soon as possible." I'm going with Cirilos down the street. read more

I gave this tailor multiple tries given its close proximity to me. But this latest experience was the LAST straw. UNPROFESSIONAL AND UTTERLY INCOMPETENT! The "master tailor" constantly tells me what he can't do and then I've taken to others who happily make the alterations I request. Professional to say the least!! Great work, I picked up two suits then came here to get them tailored. The process was so simple and fast. I put on the first suit. Set to waist, then pin the length. I asked for a cuff, I like the cuff. No problem he said, then we talked about a slight taper on the leg. After that came the coat, some sleeve work and that was it. Like I said I had two suits and I was out of there in less then 15-min's. It's true from the other reviews, he knows his profession. It's hard to find this type of service anymore. It's a lost art that is as simple of just using the basics. Knowledge of the trade and respect. Picked up the suits a week later and with a quick fitting I was out of there. Just bought a dress on Monday, but it was a little too big in the waist area. Couldn't find another size, so I sought alterations. In crunch time, I found Downey Tailors on Yelp, and thank God I did. Dropped off my dress on Wednesday afternoon, and Felipe promised it would be ready by Friday morning, in time for a Friday evening wedding (...like, who does that?!). Anyway, I seriously doubted it...but what choice did I have but to trust him? On Thursday afternoon, I called to inquire about the progress, and whether it would be ready when promised. To my surprise, I was told that I could come and pick it up right away! So, I did...and it fit like a dream. Felipe, was so nice! I have to say these guys do a really good job. I've brought several items here and I can't complain they do a good job and exact measurements but the last time I was here they just really surprised me with what they charged me for something as simple as a straight line hem. Which I could have done but didn't have the time since I was in a rush that day. I paid half of what that dress was. I haven't been there since and I have warned others. Great service! I've been using the same tailor for years in Long Beach but now I found a new one closer to my new home. The owner was super helpful and professional. I had this really expensive DVF dress I bought and only wore once and it tore so I took it in after already having it hemmed once before for the same problem and he told me not to waste my money on it. He said that fabric will always continue to fray because of the manner it was sewn. It fit me just perfect so he couldn't take it in anymore so I just consider it a loss.
