We have been wanting to try Kurzweil's for a long time (years) but have not been able to do so yet…read moresince their restaurant hours are only from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm on Monday - Saturday so our work schedules do not work regularly for it. We had the opportunity on May 4 to finally visit.
Parking was easy and plentiful. The restaurant is located in the strip mall, entry just south of the movie theater. The Kurzweil's sign is prominently displayed above the door to the restaurant.
Upon entry, the array of Kurzweil's meats and selection are displayed in cases on the north (to the right) and east (straight ahead) walls. To order and pay for the restaurant selections, payment is accomplished at the register located a few steps to the left (south). After payment and ordering, entry to the restaurant is back to the northwest, between the meat displays.
The restaurant was clean. There was a nice complement of booths or tables for self seating. Tables have mustard, ketchup, and about three varieties of Kurzweil's BBQ sauces, as well as a napkin dispenser with nice napkins.
The self serve soft drink dispenser, as well as sweet and unsweetened teas are located upon entry to the restaurant. 16 ounce foam cups with free refills are present for the beverages, with lids and straws available as preferred. I got Diet Dr Pepper which was brixed properly while my wife got water.
When we made our order, we both ordered the pork chops which the menu says comes with baked beans and cole slaw. The lady at the register asked if we wanted those or to substitute any of the other items. We went with the beans and cole slaw since it was our first time.
The online menu price for the pork chops was $15.00 though the charged price was $15.45 and the soft drink price online was $2.00 but the charged price was $2.06 so be aware the prices shown online may differ from actual charges made.
Our total bill for the two pork chops meals, one soft drink, and water was $35.94 if paid by credit card, or $34.89 if paid by cash (3% additional to use CC, $1.05 in this case) but we do not recall seeing a sign stating a difference, we did not notice until after we were seated. It is printed on the receipt. Tips can be added at the register and the "suggested tips" on the screen are calculated on the total of meals and taxes, not just the meals.
After seating ourselves, a few minutes later our meals arrived, delivered by a very friendly lady who asked if we needed anything else. There were two nicely sized pork chops with two small foam containers, one with the beans with the other the cole slaw. The black platter used was a very nice platter, not sure how to describe it, but it was nice, clean, and good to the touch. They came with a serrated steak knife and a fork, both very clean.
The bone-in pork chops were very flavorful, nicely cooked. They were not salty and were most, as well as very nicely trimmed. They tasted and looked as if they had been freshly cut before cooking. We did not use any sauces as none seemed to be warranted due to the deliciousness of the pork chops.
Baked beans were very flavorful, Kansas City-style and it would have been nice to have had a spoon for them.
Cole slaw was roughly cut with a slight touch of sweetness but not overly sweet and seemed to have been freshly made that day.
When ready to leave, you dispose of your own trash. That area was pretty full of platters and trash but people were caring for their items carefully. We noticed many people in the restaurant who appeared to be regulars. They did, as we do, cleaned off their table for the next people. We did not see anyone cleaning off tables so not sure if that is done regularly but were impressed that others, as we do, seemed to assure the table and seating were as clean as could be for the next patron. As in Boy Scouts and decent people, leave the place in better condition than how you found it.
We are hoping we can make it to Kurzweil's again as we enjoyed what we had, to try something else on the menu or to have excellent pork chops again.
