    Pickle Chips with Ranch dip.

As soon as we pulled up, sweet car hop came right up immediately after taking the car to our rights order. Being from out of town, we had no idea what to order and she helped us look over the menu. It's obviously a popular spot for the locals. We ordered the Chicken Bacon Philly special with skinny fries & drink, an order of pickle chips, bacon cheeseburger and a small chocolate shake. The food was fresh, hot & delicious! You can't beat the bacon cheeseburger! Plenty of flavor on the pickle chips! The chocolate shake was perfect consistency and super creamy. And the grilled onions on the chicken bacon philly were the best!

Chatting on those outside picnic tables....

When my brother said he was going to buy a drive-in in Pleasanton, Kansas I thought he had lost his marbles! It was a place that needed some serious TLC, but my brother saw hope for the little place and wanted to do big things with it. Well, fast forward a few years later, and I have to admit, he has done a SUPER job turning that place around!! He has cleaned it up, changed the menu, added so many different items to keep things new and exciting, and based on the calls and emails i get from him, he truly cares about that small town and its residents. I have had the pleasure of visiting Cookees twice on my trips to see my brother and his family. The first time I went I had to get a basic cheeseburger just to see what the talk was about, and I tell ya, it was a REALLY good burger! It was juicy, and the cheese was melted perfectly, the bacon was crispy, and the fresh lettuce and tomato placed on top combined with the soft hamburger buns made for a really great meal. The second time I went I had the Philly Cheese Steak, since my daughter had that on our first trip and said it was great. Well, she was right!! The girl that cooked it for me really knew what she was doing. The meat, the swiss cheese, the peppers all melted and mixed together in this meaty, cheesy, juicy goodness...and heaped onto this sub type roll was honestly the best Philly I have had to date! Seriously! I have tried Texadelphia and others here in Texas locally, but this one for some reason was just great! I washed it down with a refreshing Cherry Limeaid, and then I complimented the girl that cooked it for me, and told my brother that he really had a good thing going with that item. I am probably a tad bit bias, but I think Cookee's Drive-In is worth the stop if you want some good food, at a decent price! And be sure to stop in on the weekend, where you will find my brother and his wife most likely sitting on the picnic tables outside chatting with the customers. If you do stop in, tell him his brother from Texas said hello, and then ask him " why did you always take the mini-bike from your brother when you were kids?" ha!

Get the Blu-Jay Special; they make it how you want it and it's very good. The iced tea is really good.

Great small town old fashion feel like your still in the 50's (ok I wasn't alive in the 50's but I'm sure this place was).

The hubs had fried chicken and asked for thighs only and they were kind of small but perfectly crispy. His serving of mashed potatoes was smaller than mine (but I didn't mind sharing). I went for the open faxed tenderloin sandwich and mashed potatoes and it was really good (and big enough for leftovers!) Service was a bit slow for the place being dead but we wee not in a hurry so no biggie. Our bill with 2 dinners and a beer was less than $25 (the value of your GC) so it's very reasonably priced. I heard recently sometimes they have bull riding. I'd love to come back on one of those nights!

I could describe every experience with this restaurant but I'll leave you with the previous few. And I know what you're thinking, if the food was so bad, why do you keep going back? Well, hope and optimism. Rooting for Roots! We want the local place to succeed, but we've come to the conclusion that what they really need in order to improve, is honest feedback. But part of me hopes that it changes nothing. And here's why... my wife and I love this place. But in a weird way... allow me to explain, imagine the place as a Saturday Night Live sketch where the staff, the menu and ambiance are unapologetically pretentious, but the food doesn't deliver on any level. It's pure entertainment. We have dinner and an inside joke. First of all, for the price, you naturally expect elevated dishes and excellent service. We both had a cocktail, a glass of wine with dinner, an appetizer, entrees, salad and desert. Around $250 with tip. Pricey, but reasonable if the place delivers. On one visit we had the duck, which was served undercooked and when we mentioned it to the waiter, she scoffed, "that's the way it's supposed to be served." So feeling duly chastised for our ignorance, we shut up and ate the duck. I don't know the organism involved, but my wife and I were up all night vying for access to the bathroom. Enough said. Things were dicey, but no trips to the hospital. Six months or so had passed and finally, last night we rolled the dice and tried Roots again. My wife said her dinner was fine. She had stuffed salmon, adequate, but not great. For me, It was between the steak and the pork belly. Now I had the steak before once and it was... well it was definitely a steak. I'm not going to say much about it except for this... if you like the taste of a good glass of water, order the steak. So having experienced the steak already, I ordered the pork belly, which is an extremely tasty and forgiving cut of meat in my experience. But somehow at Roots, they figured out how to prepare it poorly. Yikes! It was dry as a bone, but only in the places where it wasn't tough as shoe leather. It had to have sounded like a rock when it hit the plate. The naturally rich flavor was cooked completely out of it, and any surviving seasonings were successfully burned away during the cremation process. I was starving so I made a valiant effort at finishing it, but it took several glasses of water and an inordinate amount of chewing. My wife laughed at me the whole time. I offered her a bite but she demurred, quipping that it had been a long week and she simply didn't have the energy. It was served with a "slaw" that consisted primarily of a plain sliced onion and slices of flavorless apple devoid of seasoning or dressing. I honestly don't know how this dish made it out of the kitchen, let alone a chef's imagination. It has become a quest for my wife and me. Like the holy grail of dining experiences, only a few minutes from our home. Ever the optimists, we will just keep trying Roots again every six months or so and hope for better on each trip... or not. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, please try Roots. We want them to succeed so we can keep coming back and having these comically terrible experiences. If pretentious irony is your spirit animal, please try roots. And Roots, please keep trying. We will keep spending $250 bucks for "dinner" and a show. PS, to add to your experience, ask for a booth when you arrive for your reservation, they will look you up and down and politely say "no" as they walk you past 4 empty booths. No explanation...

Roots Seasonal Cuisine is one of my favorite spots in Lee's Summit, and my latest happy hour visit…read morereminded me exactly why. I stopped in with my girlfriend Lisa, who loves this place so much they basically have a little corner reserved for her. She likes to work from there because the Wi-Fi is good, the vibe is comfortable, and the food is consistently amazing. We sat at the bar, had a couple glasses of wine, and Austin took great care of us. Lisa had the steak special, which was the ribeye, and I had the salmon. Both were really, really great. The salmon was cooked beautifully and the whole meal was exactly why I keep coming back. One small callout: there was a $3 difference between what the salmon was listed for on the menu and what I was charged. I let Austin know so they could catch it for future guests. It did not change my overall experience, but I appreciated being able to mention it. Brandon, one of the co-owners, is amazing. He came out and spoke with us, and that personal touch is part of what makes Roots feel special. You can tell they care about the food, the service, and the people who come in. Their happy hour is amazing, and their seasonal menu changes are superb. I love coming in and trying different things. The salmon tacos are delicious, the birria fries are a must, and I always look forward to seeing what new crostini they are featuring since those change every few months. Roots is consistent without being boring. Great food, great service, great drinks, and a menu that keeps giving you a reason to come back. Can't wait to come back. See y'all next week.
