I was driving by Garnett, KS with some friends and after reading Yelp reviews our group of seven decided to stop by Trade Winds for dinner and a beer. From the moment we opened the worn aluminum door with vinyl press-on lettering, it was a weird and awkward situation. The only thing that could have made it more uncomfortable was if a needle scratched across a record as the music stopped, a fork crashed loudly on a plate in the stark silence and someone in the back muttered "what the hail...". The music didn't literally stop but as we walked past each table, we were side eyed by each of the locals. I was dressed in blue jeans, t-shirt, hoodie and Carhartt cap. Was anyone in my group acting strangely? No. Was I over or under dressed? No. Was my zipper down? No. As I looked across the room, suspicious glances from under John Deere and Chevy caps were directed my way. Women in coiffed hair glanced then quickly looked at their plate of bar food. What was the issue? I don't know. There were two large empty tables. I sat down at one as someone from my group went to the bar to ask for menus. She stood there for about 10 minutes before someone spoke to her. The empty tables were reserved...apparently. And they won't be available. Yeah, we get it. We left. We consulted Yelp once again and saw that El Jimador was right down the street. We were quickly greeted, led to a table and had a great Mexican dinner prepared and served by the friendly staff. Avoid Trade Winds Bar & Grill. I don't know about the food but we got big servings of attitude.

Since it has came under new ownership the bar has taken off. Great food for a great price. Best place in town.

While visiting a friend in Ottawa, KS, we had dinner at Brand N Iron Bar and Grill (now named Brand…read moreN Iron Country Grill), a local favorite. We went on Saturday night and it was packed! We had to wait until guests left, but they are so quick in bussing tables that flow of guests were continuous. The ambiance was somewhat country/western style, the wall of "Brandings" of local Ranchers in the area was amazing, as if it was a tribute to them. Love the vibe, it was apparent to me that this was a very supporting community. Every customer that came in was known to the owners, if not, they were treated with very hospitable service. It wasn't too long that we are finally seated. We started off with drinks. While others had beer and fountain drinks, I had the Kansas Sunset Cocktail and it was very refreshing for the Hot Humid Kansas weather! Seeing that portions were huge, we passed on appetizers and went straight to the Main entrees. Ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich, Chicken Friend Steak Dinner, and the Barnyard Battle Dinner. Each came with 2 sides, their side salad was big, also came with 2 servings of crackers. We also got Mac & Cheese, and loaded baked potatoes as sides. Very generous with the butter for the baked potatoes, I also liked that the sour cream was Daisy, and it was individually wrapped too (my first time ever seeing sour cream like this)! Food was abundant and delicious! The Barnyard Battle is an excellent choice if you want to try both Roast Beef and Chicken Fried Steak. The Prime Rib was tender for the sandwich. I was so bummed that Prime Rib was only served on Thursdays. Hope the owners would consider making it a regular item on their daily menu. After that hearty meal, we were treated to slices of homemade apple pie (a la mode and served warn) and chocolate peanut butter pie which was shared by all of us. Those pies was a delicious way to top our dining experience. I was told it was the owner's mom's recipe, and it's a MUST have! Highly recommend if ever you find yourself on HWY 59 in Ottawa, KS! The restaurant may be easily missed from the highway because it's behind the Shell Gas Station. The parking lot is gravel but plenty. It also appears they are expanding the front outwards that you just have to go through it to get to the entrance. Special shout out to owners Aaron and Lindsay Nichols for their hospitality and keeping Brand N Iron Bar & Grill a great place for locals and non-locals to dine. :)

The way it should be. Menu has enough options to satisfy the whole family but the star of the show is steak and why mess around with other cut... get the ribeye. But... save room for dessert. Much of which is made by a grandma!!! Owner has been the couple of times I've been and make a point to remember you and make sure everything was excellent!

I have to admit atmosphere was respectful and bartender seemed amused we were brave enough to even be there. We had our beers, a few laughs with the bartender listened to some local talent opener dj's and then on our way. In my day this group were known as goth, today it's Emo. Bottom line we're all people and with a little mutual respect and humor, it's all good. Enjoy. Humanity shouldn't need a disclaimer, just be a good person. Cheers.
