While visiting a friend in Ottawa, KS, we had dinner at Brand N Iron Bar and Grill (now named Brand…read moreN Iron Country Grill), a local favorite. We went on Saturday night and it was packed! We had to wait until guests left, but they are so quick in bussing tables that flow of guests were continuous. The ambiance was somewhat country/western style, the wall of "Brandings" of local Ranchers in the area was amazing, as if it was a tribute to them. Love the vibe, it was apparent to me that this was a very supporting community. Every customer that came in was known to the owners, if not, they were treated with very hospitable service. It wasn't too long that we are finally seated. We started off with drinks. While others had beer and fountain drinks, I had the Kansas Sunset Cocktail and it was very refreshing for the Hot Humid Kansas weather! Seeing that portions were huge, we passed on appetizers and went straight to the Main entrees. Ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich, Chicken Friend Steak Dinner, and the Barnyard Battle Dinner. Each came with 2 sides, their side salad was big, also came with 2 servings of crackers. We also got Mac & Cheese, and loaded baked potatoes as sides. Very generous with the butter for the baked potatoes, I also liked that the sour cream was Daisy, and it was individually wrapped too (my first time ever seeing sour cream like this)! Food was abundant and delicious! The Barnyard Battle is an excellent choice if you want to try both Roast Beef and Chicken Fried Steak. The Prime Rib was tender for the sandwich. I was so bummed that Prime Rib was only served on Thursdays. Hope the owners would consider making it a regular item on their daily menu. After that hearty meal, we were treated to slices of homemade apple pie (a la mode and served warn) and chocolate peanut butter pie which was shared by all of us. Those pies was a delicious way to top our dining experience. I was told it was the owner's mom's recipe, and it's a MUST have! Highly recommend if ever you find yourself on HWY 59 in Ottawa, KS! The restaurant may be easily missed from the highway because it's behind the Shell Gas Station. The parking lot is gravel but plenty. It also appears they are expanding the front outwards that you just have to go through it to get to the entrance. Special shout out to owners Aaron and Lindsay Nichols for their hospitality and keeping Brand N Iron Bar & Grill a great place for locals and non-locals to dine. :)

The way it should be. Menu has enough options to satisfy the whole family but the star of the show is steak and why mess around with other cut... get the ribeye. But... save room for dessert. It opens at 4 pm, but the restaurant's website still says 11 am. I do not understand why it has taken so long for the restaurant to update its website. There also have been changes to the menu. The new menu includes Branzino (European Sea Bass). It is an interesting choice, but arrives frozen. I prefer the salmon, which arrives fresh. I similarly would prefer trout to the Branzino, since trout would be available fresh in Lawrence. They have a choice of a few different nonalcoholic beers. I appreciate that. The nonalcoholic beer market has grown dramatically, even in Germany. I find it to be puzzling that some restaurants in Lawrence still don't have any.

Very bland no flavor with some sort of red sauce came out with it on the plate which tasted like A-1 sauce and ketchup mixed toy. Horrible flavor. They put the steak in the broiler, to be honest it looked like it was microwaved. Zero char. They took it back and put grilled marks in it and it still didn't come out right. I even asked out waiter if I could go back and cook my own steak. Then they tried to fix it with bringing me out another Ribeye and not the same Cowboy Cut . Grilled it also . With marks and not even a decent crust . They say they cut their own meet . Maybe at the grocery store . HUGE disappointment. Maybe just turn it into a bar with drinks and appetizers. Service was decent our waiter tried his hardest to get it done right Z even the manger came out and tried to make it right but at this point I wasn't interested in having a crappy steak . I do have to say the place had a nice atmosphere l. Do yourself a favor and go someplace else . Save yourself for over paying for crap meat .

She earned an A+ and her tip reflected that. That said, my friend and I were both extremely upset about the lack of options for lunch. Everything on the menu was brunch and the options for that were not great. It took us quite a while to finally decide on what we would have. I had the quiche Lorraine with sweet potato fries and a salad. The sweet potato fries were OK, but the quiche was cold and I ended up eating less than half of my food. My friend ordered the blue crab benny which came with home fries. Her potatoes were cold and she also ate less than half her food because she said she didn't like it. I will accept blame for not realizing J Wilson doesn't serve lunch on weekends, but the quality of the food is on them. When I come to Lawrence, it's almost always on a Saturday, so I will not be having lunch at J Wilson's again.

I had the medium rare bone-in ribeye for $49. It was slightly over cooked but not by much. I didn't like the taste of the rub/sauce on the steak as it tasted a little sour. I've never eaten a steak at a steakhouse with this taste. It was certainly unique. I loved the lump crab cakes though; very moist and creamy. The service was great. Our waiter was attentive and offered a free coffee cake for a birthday celebration. J. Wilson's has an average 4.3 stars on Yelp which is really good. However, the bone-in ribeye was underwhelming. I would rather pay $20-30 more for a more exceptional steak. P.S. my brother also could not finish his KC Strip.

And Wagon Wheel is definitely real. Anyone that knows me is aware that I'm a comfort food aficionado. If it's hot, fried, salty, covered in gravy - then most likely I will enjoy it. My tastebuds were thrilled to discover that Wagon Wheel Steakhouse serves the mother lode of comfort food. The first thing you'll notice when you see the servers carrying plates past your table to deliver to other customers is that everything, and I mean virtually everything, is made in house. The regular fries and the curly cue fries are fresh cut. They offer crinkle cut fries too like you can get in some fast food restaurants, but why would you order that when you can get fresh cut? The chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak, the pork tenderloins are all hand breaded and fried in the kitchen. Wagon Wheel doesn't serve pre-cut and pre-fried fritters, no sir. As you can see in my picture, my pork tenderloin sandwich was twice the size of the bun, so I cut it in half and took the rest home to eat later - this made my dinner both tasty and cheap as I received two meals for the price of one. There is a small but sufficient fresh salad bar available as well as homemade pie for dessert. A full bar is to the right of the entrance and there are new flat screen TVs all around the dining room. A friend told me Wagon Wheel serves her favorite fried mushrooms and others told me their hamburgers are some of the best around - I can't wait to return and try these, as well as their steaks. When you visit, say hello to my friend the owner Linda Jo. Although she may not be easy to find as she personally spends a great deal of time in the kitchen cooking the food herself. I think you'll agree, her hands-on approach makes the difference at Wagon Wheel.
