This is my favorite coffee shop and has the best chai lattes in the city! It's conveniently located in the Turnstyle Market connected to the 59th Street/Columbus Circle subway station. They have a wide variety of drink options as well as sweet and savory pastries and food. A lot of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as bagels (with option of vegan cream cheese!), quiches, hand pies, cookies, muffins, sandwiches, etc. The staff is super friendly and efficient. read more

Coffee was okay here, but not what I expected. Maybe I was reading the menu wrong but I clearly saw a white chocolate as an option for flavor, but the lady kept saying mocha. After some back and forth we just gave up and settled on what she was arguing. I understand that some new yorkers may come off as rude sometimes, but this wasnt it, i honestly felt like my presence in the shop was a burden to the employee. My husband got a mocha, but it wasn't good. It tasted like coffee with unsweetened cocoa powder in it. My coffee was toffee and it was good but nothing out of the ordinary. In hopes of relief for a cool down from summer's sweltering humidity I exited my train to a food hall of Turnstyle Underground Market at Columbus Circle 59th Street. After briefly scanning their drink menu on the wall for something cold and non-coffee I decided on strawberry blended lemonade $7.95. It is utterly overpriced as I was flabbergasted and, I completely agree with another Yelper, the stolid, apathetic very cantankerous Asian female cashier spurn disdainfully blatantly the wrong way as perhaps that is her personality. I requested for ice in my drink and her vibe fend that I was bothering her to do work while I am spending money who is paying your NYS minimum wage salary. My drink was awful as it was excessively too sweet of white foam. I have fallen into buyer's remorse. Former NYC Mayor Bloomberg would have been egregiously appalled of Down Under Coffee's lack of controlling sugary drink distribution and my consumption intake of sugary drinks! There were absolutely NO ice as I requested in my drink amid it was served cold. This business is located in NYC - not in United Kingdom where Brits do not insert ice in their drinks. I'm very quickly becoming a local at this coffee shop (: it's a cute quaint coffee shop in the Turnstyle marketplace at Columbus Circle. The staff who work here are also super sweet and quick at getting your orders ready. I have been coming for their iced lattes which are very solid! The espresso is definitely good quality and rich. I haven't gotten to try too many of their pastries yet but they all look delicious, and they also have a variety of vegan and gluten free options!! They seem to partner with a lot of local small business bakeries/bakers in the city and sell their baked goods which is a bonus! read more

I'll be real, the first thing that attracted me to Down Under Coffee was the quick subway access. They're located in the food hall of Turnstyle UnderGround Market-- making them a perfect stop to dash to on the way to Central Park or Columbus Circle's WholeFoods. What has me coming back time after time though is their selection of vegan/gluten-free friendly pastries! Scones, cookies, desert breads. They're usually priced somewhere between $5 to $15 dollars. A note about these pastries-- they tend to be on the dry side. HOWEVER this isn't a huge problem if you like to dip your pastry into your coffee. Beware- this is not a place to sit, chat or read. There is no seating inside the cafe itself. The market has some chairs and tables, but these are often filled. The employees are always very helpful and have great recommendations about which pastry/coffee to choose. Whenever I have questions about the ingredients/prep area, they've been able to get me a quick answer. More coffee shops should follow Down Under Coffee's example and offer diet diverse bites. read more

The food is so good too and fast so I know I can get something even if I'm running on a tight schedule. Lately they have stepped it up even more. Tasted nothing like lemonade nor watermelon, but sugary apricot flavored juice that you can get from the refrigerated isle in Morton Williams down the block. I saw the way it was made and it was all from juice cartons. I was thinking it would be home-made in a pitcher with actual lemons and watermelon, but it's not. Not recommended. If I am paying 7$ for a drink, I expect better. Maybe their coffee is okay (haven't tried so I can't speak for that). Grabbing a cup in New York is normal. But finding a new cup is tough. This was a time to give the place a try. The coffee is freshly made. It is made from coffee nuts that were brought from Australia. It has a mild taste that is not rich or strong. Their method is light. It is easy to drink plain, or with a touch of cream. It is really your choice. The first thing to do is to step inside the small shop and look at the menu. There is a variety of coffee to choose from. Yes, you can get a regular cup, but you can also try an espresso, a capuchino, a latte, and even an Americano. There is a variety to choose from. Maybe it's an iced coffee. Or maybe it is from a special brew. It is your place to decide when you are there. I prefer a regular cup this time. I am a serious coffee drinker. I can have a triple espresso in the morning with no problem. When I spent a few weeks in Europe last year that was typical. The fresher the better. That is how they make it overseas, or in a serious coffee cafe. But this time, a regular coffee was ideal as I was heading out to a meeting. I ordered my cup and got my order. That was it. Nothing special as it came from the machine pot. I did not see how they made it. I did not see it created the way I would request. It was a cup of coffee from the machine and that was it. I did see them make a cappuccino. That was a traditional cup of coffee that was topped with the cream milk that keeps a swirl in it to make it look nice. Everything is placed in a paper cup. There is no real coffee cup that can be used if you could sit down. In this instance you are expected to take the cup and head outside. At least you can cross the street and sit in Central Park. If you need to grab a cup and you are running through the subway in New York, then Down Under Coffee is worth the stop. After all, it is a cup of coffee to go even if it keeps you underground. Won't be returning. When I first went I met a young lady and an asian woman. they were both nice, kind, professional and observant. I did not feel rushed or pressured. I was invited to return the following week for a new item to be brought to the menu! Sadly, I made it back- two weeks later. Two different people, different vibes. Two men latino and Asian. The Asian man had what seemed to be a "bubbly" demeanor. I wanted the pecan bar and was considering matcha. But saw they had some elderberry drink and something else...i was thinking and the asian guy was hounding me. He would not move onto the next customer until I paid. I am a person of color. Could you leave me alone? I felt pressured into complying. i told him nicely to take the next customer...but no one knew what to di cause it was clear his attention was set on me. Once I got my stuff I was so disgusted and over it. This was may experience. I dont think i/ would return cause now when I see the space I think of having someone watching me as I stare at the board and hold a lemon bar. By the way, I spent $20 bucks. Visited this coffee shop yesterday morning and the elderly, Asian, female cashier/barista was rude, condescending, impatient, and potentially racist. She gave me the worst experience I have ever had at a coffee shop in my entire life. Needless to say, I will not be returning. The employee tried to belittle me by asking to attend to the guest behind me when I pondered over adding a $10 hot entrée to my order for a brief moment. What she should have done instead was charge me and attend to the following guest while I deliberate over additional options. At other coffee shops I have visited, employees are always patient in answering any questions about items on the menu, giving me suggestions, and allowing me time to deliberate over them. Neither have I ever been rushed nor given the impression the following guest's order was of greater importance than mine. Because I had been rushed and I was on the go, I abandoned the idea of further adding to my order and requested to complete my purchase right then, to the detriment of her potential sales. When I hand the cashier a $100 bill, she rejects it, stating that her business does not accept $100 bills. That was all I had on me, in addition to a few singles, for a $15 order of two drinks and a brownie. There were no signs stating that the business does not accept $100 bills that she could direct me towards. Instead, the employee cited previous experiences of having received false $100 bills. This rubbed me the wrong way, because she was insinuating I had given her false currency, despite the fact that she had never unfolded mine to better inspect it. She then asked me to pay by credit card, which I did not have on me, or to walk far from the coffee shop to get change before coming back, which I was not about to waste time doing in an area saturated by other coffee shops. I tried to give the employee the benefit of the doubt and asked if the problem was really that she lacked sufficient change to exchange my $100. She then admitted so. However, she never apologized to me when I told her she should have just led with that instead of effectively accusing me of a crime. Another kind customer attempted to pay for me, but I rejected her offer. It was the principle that counted. I did not want to drink or eat from an establishment that held me at little regard. And I had been striving to support smaller coffee shop chains, such as Down Under, for years, despite their premium prices. I had appreciated their vegan, Sensible Edible collection that I never see elsewhere in stores. I walked to a nearby Starbucks, afterward, frustrated about having started my day on the wrong foot. I told my barista what happened to me after giving her my order and she told me that they did not have sufficient change to break my $100 either, at that moment. I appreciated her leading with the fact that she lacked sufficient change, rather than leading with shaming me, as the Down Under employee had. Even more, when I asked for the Starbucks employee to cancel my order, she insisted on covering the cost of the two drinks I tried to order. Her more professional behavior and small act of kindness dramatically improved my day and I tipped her all my spare singles and coins in appreciation. Turns out, you can have a warmer, more intimate experience from a big coffee chain than a smaller one! I will return to Starbucks franchises and will continue to try out other small coffee brands other than this one. I've not had challenges with any other staff member at Down Under. I just feel compelled to share my story to inform the business to offer better sensitivity and customer service training to their staff to avoid alienating future customers from supporting their establishment altogether. I typically make my own coffees and teas at a fraction of the price charged by Down Under. I'd visit on occasion, whenever I lacked time. I can now better acknowledge how many of their products are overpriced, overly processed, junk foods. At $7.50 for a coffee, it should be organic, but it's not. Stumbled upon this gem of a place one day and was impressed! It's sometimes hard to find great food, drinks and service all in one place. This place checks all the marks. On my first visit, I went for an Iced Caramel Latte, Watermelon Lychee Lemonade and a Pear Tart, all of which were delicious! The service we experienced was truly exceptional that we decided to return a few days later for breakfast. As a non vegan, I decided to try their vegan tofu sausage scramble breakfast pocket, which was so good that I'm surprised this wasn't made of non vegan ingredients. The service we experienced again was consistent to what we experienced on our first visit, so you know it's genuine. This will be a mandatory stop if I'm ever in the area, and if you're lucky to live in the area, I highly recommend you visit them for your daily coffee! read more

I don't drink coffee so I can't speak to any of that. I have enjoyed their tea-based drinks here as well as the lemonades. I love the selection of vegan baked goods too. But my favorite thing is all the vegan sandwiches and meals they have. The prosciutto one was my absolute favorite for a while, but now they have this bbq pulled pork (jackfruit) and oh my god. I want to go back and eat it every day. I also had the vegan mac and that was amazing too. It's a good day when I get to get something from there, even if my bank account doesn't think so. read more

First of all the service was phenomenal I had a lovely but brief conversation with one of the service professionals. I also do understand that I was there at a time when it isn't considered rush hour so not everyone may have the pleasure to talk with staff. The ambiance in the shop was cozy with the handwritten pastry cases and the beautiful decor. Finally the food and coffee was amazing. I ordered a black iced americano and a lemon poppy muffin. To start I do believe that the iced americano was a bit pricey at about 5 dollars compared to other small coffee shops charging 3 or 4 dollars. But I think the quality of the coffee makes up for this price difference. I didn't taste any bitterness - which is typical of most black coffees - instead I tasted the rich end notes of chocolate and spices which I assume they use in their coffee blend. I found this extremely pleasant and it made it so enjoyable to drink. Moving on to the lemon poppy muffin I truly believe it is one of the best muffins I have ever had. The lemon glaze on top was rich and citrusy which added a beautiful lemon flavor to the muffin which usually in lemon desserts is not tasted. The cake of the muffin was fluffy and moist and I believe that is what made it so amazing. It is hard to find muffins now which are so moist. Furthermore, they have the Kimono Yuzu Sparkling water which is a hard to find item so that was a nice surprise. read more
