Very disappointing visit today. This used to be the best spot for seafood. Their prices continue to go up and the amount of food is decreasing. $15 for 6 shrimp and French fries. Not a good value when you can go get twice the food for $2 more at most surrounding seafood restaurants. The service wasn't bad, but not great. Great little place with a super nice vibe and lots of seating inside, around the outdoor bar and on the deck. We have enjoyed some amazing sunsets sitting here for dinner. However, beware because the bugs are ferocious!! No serums and mosquitos want to dine on YOU. Anyway, the food is very nice. Not outstanding from a culinary aspect but very fresh and predictable. We also love it when they have live music. And the icing on the cake is being able to bring our pup. She enjoys the evening out as well. :-) read more

There aren't enough stars here for me to rate. If I could give ten stars I would. We were told from a local to checked this place out and I'm so glad we did. Upon arriving my wife and I and our two kids sat outside and were promptly greeted. Our server was so chill and relaxed it was hard not to catch the same vibe. I had the smoked gouda salmon and my wife had the snapper. The Salmon had the best flavor of any Salmon that I can ever remember having and the peppers mixed in with the snapper was also fantastic. Chill bar with good food! The she crab soup was delicious! Shrimp tacos really good and packed with food! My girlfriends also enjoyed their meals as well. Our server was really sweet - they didn't have the wine my one friend ordered so she comped a glass of a similar type. As some others said, the servers and bartenders did not wear masks which being from the northeast kind of throws ya for a loop. Daughter got the bang bang shrimp and it was not good. Over the top sweet with no heat. Almost tasted like they coated it in fruity pebbles. Son tried the chicken fingers and said they were not good. The hostess would not seat them in a pretty empty restaurant until we arrived even though it is difficult for our friend to be standing. We got seated and the one positive was our waitress (wish I had gotten her name). She was very attentive. Two in the party ordered the flounder pounder, one fried shrimp basket and a seafood pasta. The flounder was pretty dry and overcooked. The salads were good and the green bean side was flavorful. The shrimp was dry with a tough batter. Fries were ok. The diner with the seafood casserole said that it was very good. The bread basket was fresh and one of the highlights. I really wanted to like the food but there is a reason why we hadn't gone back for years. Everyone agreed that prices were higher than expected but that comes with the territory. View from the deck is great in the evening. I went with the fried plate that had shrimp, oysters, scallops and fish. It also comes with a side and salad. Great View Good Food Great Time We had a great late lunch on the way home from Disappearing Island. Boat friendly docking helped make our dining experience that much more enjoyable. My wife had the shrimp cocktail that featured a large offering that was enjoyed to the fullest. My granddaughter loved the kids portion of fried fish bites so much that she wants to know when we will be returning. I had the bacon cheeseburger which was probably the only somewhat disappointing part of the meal. The burger was undercooked, but that never really bothers me. All in all I can say we will be returning soon to enjoy another meal at Down the Hatch! read more

Great! We stopped in for lunch before heading the marine center and we are glad we did! We sat outside, under the roof and it was perfect for a hot august day in Florida! The staff was fine, certainly not overly accommodating or engaging but we didn't need to wave them down either, so for this kind of atmosphere it worked. The food: We had a variety of things that were all good - Kids meal - burger sliders. They were good but a little we'll done, even for a kid. Fries were great! Two different salads - Caesar with blacked shrimp. It was great! The seasoning on the shrimp was perfect! The other salad (can't remember the name but it had beets & hearts of palm) also with blackened shrimp (light because this person doesn't like a lot of spice) and it was outstanding! May be one of the best salads we have had in a long time! Hatch burger - be ware: this is a mess!!! It was so messy it made the chips soggy. Such a bummer because the chips are great! Catch if the day - good, but not great. Overly battered so you tasted more batter fry than fish. Location and view and suburb! Made for a great afternoon watching the boat traffic and eating a good meal. We'll be back when we're in the area for sure! read more

Great location but I was not impressed with the food. Not sure if this was because we got to the restaurant an hour before their scheduled close time but at any rate, I expected better. Service was not the issue. It really was the food. I had their special: shrimp stuffed with crab. With it came a side salad and another side of my choice. I went with the strawberry vinaigrette dressing which was quite unimpressive. I paired this with Brussel Sprouts. I specifically asked if it would be served crispy to which they replied yes. Come to find out it was more like boiled sprouts with bits of bacon. The shrimp was not bad, it was the sides that got a thumbs down. Not sure if there will be a next time for me but should this happen, I may swing by during lunch, if anything, to enjoy the view. read more

Great Food and Atmosphere, TERRIBLE Service. The first strike was when I was walked into the establishment and saw the chalk board that read, "please seat yourselves." Naturally after reading the sign, we found a table for our group to sit. Once we began to sit down, we were told that we needed to see the hostess and put our name in. When we went over to the host stand, we saw that they had erased the board. We put our name in and thankfully only waited about 15 minutes. Unfortunately once we sat down we waited about 20 minutes for server to help us, Mikka. He asked us what we would like to drink, and we asked for a drink menu. He then sighed, and grabbed ONE drink menu for a 9 group table. We then waited an additional 15 minutes, until I had to ask the host to send him back over. First thing he said when he got back to the table was, "once again, what can I get you to drink?" We asked for water, never got it. We had to go to the bar for water and EVERY single drink refill. I sincerely think he forgot to put our food into the POS system. Now for the food: We ordered the Hatch Famous Smoked Fish Dip. It was okay. It generally lacked flavor and was served with pickled jalapeños. I ordered the Ponce Fish Reuben. I was not bad. The fries were delicious! Two of the people in our group didn't get their fish tacos until the rest of us were done eating. The manager had to come ask us what we ordered. Conclusion: I completely understand if your staff or kitchen is overwhelmed, but the lack of poise and professionalism is uncalled for. I am a full time teacher, part-time waitress, and personally would never let my tables have to go get their own drinks and find me each time they needed something. read more

After spending the day on the water we wanted to grab some dinner and the only restaurant with dock spots available was down the hatch.... This should have been a sign. We waited quite a bit for service once we sat which was odd because there was only four other tables inside. Once our drink order was taken service was fine from there. The food was awful. The crab boil I had was FROZEN seafood with no flavor. The only piece of my plate that had seasoning was half of a piece of corn. The shrimp was over cooked and rubbery, the crab tasted like a freezer and the sausage was so cheap the casing was like a rubber condom preventing me from chewing or biting through. The crawfish.... It was so fishy I couldn't swallow the one I tried. It was by far the fishiest seafood item I have ever had. And my corn bread was freezing cold which only proves it was from the day before.... although it was tasty. My niece had the kids meal mini burgers and I thought she just didn't feel well from being on the water all day and that was why she wasn't eating but once on the boat she admitted she did not like the food and COULDN'T eat it because it tasted so bad... I wish she would have told me while we were at the restaurant but she's 7 and felt bad. Needless to say we will never visit this restaurant again. The atmosphere is nice and it's very convenient for boaters to pull up and have lunch but the food is almost inedible. For the higher cost you should really do better Down the Hatch. I don't mind paying a higher bill but it needs to be worth it and it was definitely not at this restaurant. read more

Down the Hatch is simply a nice pleasant waterfront place to eat and enjoy. Though I wouldn't say the food is all that great, it's better than what you might find in most Daytona restaurants specializing in seafood. Before dinner I order a Bloody Mary which when served was really dolled up with olives, shrimp and some cured baloney type meats. Though nothing that would exactly blow me away, a decent enough drink. I then went on to have a bowl of their "secret recipe" She Crab soup, which with a shot of sherry was really very good, done very much like the She Carb soups of Charleston. And if that weren't enough of the so-called "secret recipes," I had their salmon done with their secret smoked Gouda sauce. Both were good, though I wouldn't say anything outstanding, superlative or special. However, the food you get here is indeed fresh. I'm going to go Four Stars on Down the Hatch because overall it is very nice with its charming interior, ambiance, good service and on the water Halifax River location next to a marine so great to walk around and look over the boats. read more

Down the Hatch is without question, my favorite place to eat in the Daytona Beach metro area. The food, the service and the atmosphere all combine to make an excellent setting for a nice, fun meal. The location, just a stone's throw from the beautiful Ponce Inlet lighthouse, is perfect. Right on the water with a view of the ocean and the intercoastal. There's nothing better than sitting out here and watching the sunset while enjoying some delicious seafood. Service has always been excellent and just kind of gives you that island vibe. It's not at all like the rest of Daytona. You almost feel like you're in Key West. Then there's the food. It's spectacular. The raw oysters were easily some of the best I've ever eaten and how can you go wrong with peel and eat shrimp? And that's just the appetizers. The spicy Spanish snapper and the Scallop dinner are both excellent choices for a meal. If you're in the mood for pasta, the shrimp and scallop pasta is also a big winner. If you're in the area, don't hesitate to get off the beaten path and head down here. You won't regret it. read more

My husband had the fish Reuben at Down the Hatch. The waitress asked if he wanted chips or fry's with that. That sandwich was $18. He expected the side to be included at that price. Surprise! There was a $2 up charge for his fry's. He was not pleasantly surprised. It came out quickly, however, and he ate it but I doubt he will again order fish with sauerkraut. Maybe it's an acquired taste? I ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp. I normally expect that menu item to be served at a hot temperature as well as a good kick of spice. My meal came barely warm with little hot seasoning. I asked if they usually serve this hot and they advised, Yes, it should be hot. So my plate went back. It did come back nice and hot temperature wise but the flavor was pretty disappointing. Too much sweet with little spice for a too bland dish. I recommend they look for a new recipe for this menu item. This was our first visit here. It has a nice atmosphere but maybe I need to find another choice to order. I think we will be back but our choices will be different. Our server was good. The unsweetened tea was excellent. If you order wine, it will come in a plastic cup. read more
