My fiancé and I enjoyed dinner here recently, and as always it was exceptional! We ordered nearly the entire menu as we often do because I'm a Chef myself, and it was one magnificent dish after another! The general manager Kevin checked on us frequently to get our feedback and the chef Lane came out when we were finished to make sure we enjoyed everything, which is always enjoyable! If you enjoy exceptionally prepared food and a great dining experience I highly recommend!! My favorites of the evening were the cheese board expertly curated by the staff, the scallops with the pimento cheese risotto, and the braised rabbit risotto. The desserts are always amazing and they have one of the best crack pies I've ever tasted! I work Macon every 3 months for a 4 day shoot and we always eat here. Great food and the chef is very accommodating to my food allergies: gluten, onion & garlic. I don't drink but everyone at the table raves about the wine. Maury is usually our server and always remembers what we like-he's awesome. My dining mates said the locally sourced house bread was great. I'd love to see some gluten fee bread or pasta on the menu sometime soon. Wonderful place to dine. Some of the best food and service in Macon! Located above the Rookery. The rabbit dish is delicious and the steaks are cooked to perfection. Stopping by for a drink after work is always nice and the bartenders are fast and courteous. Got one of the best Moscow mules here and the wine selection is nice as well. Great place for a nice dinner and evening out in downtown Macon. Parking in downtown Macon leaves much to be desired, so expect to do a bit of searching for a space during busy nights and weekends. read more

If you are in Downtown Macon searching for a fancy place to have dinner, then THIS is your place without a doubt. I was able to make a reservation using Open Table and was seated immediately when I got to the restaurant. The location of the restaurants actually the floor above The Rookery restaurant.The space is pretty small, so I highly recommend that you make a reservation. I came on a week night and every table was filled. The food here is exceptional and so is the service! My server knew EVERYTHING about the restaurant and was able to thoroughly explain all the menu items to me. Several items on the menu looked appealing to me, but I decided to start with a Farm Fresh Salad. This was the best salad I have ever had. The ingredients all paired so well together that I could have eaten this salad without dressing! But the dressing was made in house and tasted great. For my entree, I chose the Beef Tenderloin Filet with Buttermilk whipped potatoes, spinach salad, and a warm bacon dressing. This is one of the best steaks I have ever had. It was still juicy and flavorful even at a medium well temperature that I requested. The potatoes were creamy and the spinach was just as fresh as the salad tasted. Needless to say, I cleaned my plate leaving happy and full. Next time I am in Macon, I will be making a stop here! read more

My husband and I stopped by Dovetail for a Sunday Brunch. My husband had the Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict, which was quite divine (yes, I stole a bite). The chicken was so succulent. My husband went as far to say its the best fried chicken he's every had. The fried eggs, english muffin, and bacon jam made quite the combination. I had the Dovetail Spring Standard, which provided a great spread of yummy goodness. The spread was a good mix of veggies, carbs, and protein. The vibe here is one of southern sleekness. I like the rustic decor mixed with modern lines, complete with animal heads and rifles on the wall. I will definitely be visiting sometime again for an evening cocktail! read more

I came here with Gretchen F and reiterate her sentiment that it is pleasantly surprising to find a foodie place like this in Macon, GA. Dovetail can definitely compete with similar restaurants in big cities. We ordered the cheese plate and put-ups to start. The cheese plate was amazing (I'm lactose intolerant and felt it was worth the pain ;) ). You get a selection of cheeses and pairings that just melt in your mouth. I was not as impressed by the put-ups. Put-ups was 4 sauces/dips and some bread. I think was mainly bugged me about them was the $12 price tag...bring it down to $8 and then we'll talk. After reading other reviews I decided on the Braised Rabbit. Soooo glad I made that choice. It was perfection. I loved how the brussell sprouts were cooked, the texture of the risotto, and the flavor of the pork belly. In all honesty, the rabbit could have been chicken and I wouldn't have noticed but the rabbit wasn't the highlight of the dish. My husband had the Beef Tenderloin and it was melt-in-your-mouth perfect. The table also shared a side of the mac-and-cheese which was too much food for me. I had a bite and it was tasty but I don't think I'd order it again. Cheese plate trumps Mac and Cheese! If you are in Macon, this place is a must. Prices are more expensive than, I'm sure every other restaurant in Macon, but well worth it. If you are visiting from a big city the cost will seem normal. Give it a try! read more

Still a whole-hearted 5 stars! The boyfriend surprised me with a special date night here, and we were not disappointed! I had the drink special (the name of which I unfortunately cannot remember at the moment) and it was delicious. Something homemade with spiced rum and basil and mint, I think. It was delish! The boy had his Pinot Grigiot, which was reliably satisfying. This time we split their special as an appetizer. There was a crab cake on top, then a fried green tomato (I think?), then a small veal medallion, then another fried green tomato (I believe?). I took the crab and he took the veal; we were both very happy with the preparation. For his entree, boyfriend got the quail risotto again and found it just as good as before, although it had many more bones than it had on Valentine's Day. Not sure why that might be, but it didn't detract from his enjoyment. The risotto was perfection. I tried the country vegetable plate, and I'm SO glad that I did! I found small servings each of braised cabbage, some type of field peas, tomato, mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, and cornbread. Each was cooked perfectly. I used to spend my summers in France, and this transported me back instantly to Sunday brunch at a family friend's farm in Normandy. Cornbread is usually my favorite thing ever, and this was good (if a bit too buttery for me), but the peas stole the show, hands down. SO. GOOD! For dessert, Boy had some sort of peanut brittle toffee thingamajig? It looked like a gigantic cookie topped with a huge scoop of ice-cream and garnished with generous pieces of peanut brittle. None of those are my favorite ingredients, so I didn't try any - but the Boy was in heaven. I had the Peach Crisp and requested no ice cream, which turned out to be the best preference ever. This is NOT a peach cobbler; don't think of it as such. The dessert is served in a mini cast iron frying pan, which is adorable and appropriate. The pan is filled with baked peaches, which are topped with a layer of crispy, bready goodness (I would guess: oatmeal, bread crumbs, cinnamon, and brown sugar? Maybe?). It was absolutely delicious, and the perfect amount of dessert to feel happily full without feeling weighed down. TL;DR: Dovetail remains my absolute favorite restaurant in Macon, GA for its fresh, local, organic ingredients; its intimate, friendly-yet-super-classy atmosphere; and its perfect, fine-dining recipes that ensure not only that every bite is exquisite, but ALSO that you will go home full and satisfied. read more

First of all... excellent food. Were it just the food, 5 stars would be warranted. We had reservations for four and were seated in a back room near a table of Kenny Chesney fans in jeans, flannel shirts and requisite ball caps. (I, mistakenly, thought the downstairs Rookery was the casual joint.) We ordered appetizers of fried chicken skins and the cheese plate. We would recommend them exceedingly. The skins were a surprise, for sure. Our entrees were: salmon salad, shrimp and pasta, the salmon plate with roasted corn, and the filet mignon. All were cooked expertly and seasoned exceptionally well. This was really great food. The service really was disappointing. Our waiter was devoid of personality or helpful hints about the menu. He was rarely found and our drink glasses were often empty. Moreover, his slowness cost us additional drinks and desserts. We just couldn't wait on him any longer. We'll go back, but will do our best to avoid the waiter we had. He definitely cost his employer money and a better review. read more

I love this restaurant- and have been several times over the past year that I have lived here! It's quite cutting edge for Macon, although if you have ever eaten in Atlanta or DC or New York or Chicago you would be a little more used to this type of cuisine. It's farm to table, they locally source as much as possible and the menu changes every few months, including the cocktail menu! I love love LOVE the seasonal vegetable plate- one constant they have had is a dill creamed corn that is TO DIE FOR. I could literally eat an entire platter. (Although I have to say their cornbread is a little dry, but really, that's like the only thing I don't love there.) For "snacks" they also have delicious deviled eggs (I love me a deviled egg) and they used to have these ham fritters that everyone absolutely raved about- but evidently they go on hiatus until Fall so FYI. Other menu highlights are their desserts, our recently visit involved something called Cracked Pie that was, like crack (although the name is actually because they use fresh baked oatmeal cookies that they break apart to form a pie crust that they then fill with heaven, I mean, a pecan pie type filling, and when you bake the filling it cracks, or something like that, but really who cares, it's amazing) plus they top it with home made salted caramel ice cream that is like nothing I've tasted before. I'm drooling. But whenever I go and I've managed to save room for dessert I'm never disappointed. Ok- so the food is fantastic, duh (see above) but their drinks are really good too- they have an extensive whiskey/bourbon menu, a pretty decent wine list, but for me the highlight is their great cocktails- this last time there was a delightful blueberry collins but I once had something made with Georgia Peach infused whiskey...! Anyway, the service has always been amazing- they never rush you out, they answer any questions you have, our last waiter on our most recent visit spent 15 minutes discussing whiskeys with my husband and our friend which was awfully nice. The decor is also pretty neat- kind of taxidermy chic (big moose heads, etc) with Edison lightbulbs hanging everywhere. The hostess told me what time would be good to arrive to have a pleasant dining experience. She was correct on timing. This restaurant is going to cost you some $$$ so be prepared for the expense. We started with the Deviled Eggs, Fried Chicken Skins, and the Cheese Plate. I would recommend the Cheese Plate and Deviled Eggs. Awesome place for brunch on the weekends. I love the farm to table options. The menu constantly changes to keep up with what's in season or what the chef feels like making. The different twist they put with the French toast options are great. My only request is that they would offer some freshly squeezed juices. WOW! Dovetail rivals the best in the Southeast. You are sure to see them featured in G&G and Southern Living soon. Simply perfect. Cheese plate, Grilled Duck breast, and quail risotto. We didn't even have room for an entrée but the blackened catfish would have been the choice. The food was just phenomenal along with wine and pre-dinner drinks. Now to the service. Timothy is one of the best servers I've ever had. Was inviting and knowledgeable and made us feel like the only two in the dining room. If you request him you will not forget it. Finally, as an Atlanta resident with access to many great restaurants I can say Dovetail would be at the top of the list in Atlanta. I saw some comments in some online reviews commenting on the prices. Enjoy it while it lasts Macon. What a genuinely wonderful experience Dovetail was in Macon. I sat at the bar on a weeknight and started off with a coffee infused mezcal cocktail - great harmony of smoky and spicy - the name of which escapes me but was an unusual one. For food, I ordered the magret duck breast and a side of the fried brussels sprouts which was the right amount of food for just me, although I wasn't ravenous going in. I thought both the duck and the brussels were fantastic. For dessert I got the cracked pie - which was heavenly - and then was in the mood for a coffee cocktail of some sort but not the espresso martini on the menu. The bartender, Sarah - who was terrific all night - offered to whip up an espresso old fashioned. That was much more up my alley & it was exactly what I was looking for. Very tasty food and very hip and trendy spot at the moment, however the portion sizes were minuscule for the price. For example, the $13 scallop appetizer, which was delicious, boasted 2 scallops and a quarter cup of the squash puree. Half the size I was expecting. The vegetable sides were similarly very small.
