A very upscale, classy restaurant in the heart of downtown Macon. Don't be fooled by the bar when you walk in, dovetail is tucked upstairs and is much quieter and more sophisticated. You need reservations to dine here. There was complimentary bread and peach jam. They have a rotating selection of daily specials, cheeses, and change their menu frequently. I also appreciate the "small plates" section for when you're not that hungry. The cheese board appetizer was a surprising favorite. It had items sourced from local farms. I was in Macon for the weekend and kept hearing about Dovetail. So I decided to give it a try. Located in the heart of Macon in the middle of the Historic District, Dovetail provides a charming southern vibe with a low lit cozy kinda atmosphere and delicious comfort food. You definitely feel the love with their servers. Extensive menu knowledge and very service oriented they aim to give you the best experience possible. So after a tasty cocktail and a very nice charcuterie board I went with the Crab and Panko Crusted Cod. Oh my goodness what a delicious entrée. A tasty crusted outside and so tender inside. And that lemon and miso creamed kale topped it all off. Definitely a place to try when in Macon. The only draw back is that it's up stairs on the 2nd floor with no elevator. read more

We had dinner at Dovetail while passing through Macon, and it ended up being one of the best nights of our trip. I wish we lived closer. The atmosphere was refined without feeling formal. There was warm lighting, beautiful plating, and just the right balance of polished and welcoming. The food was exceptional. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, with flavors that were both comforting and sophisticated. Our Server had a great personality! Also, you can tell there is real care behind the menu. It is not often I give 5 stars for a first time visit, but I would highly recommend this place based on my first dinner experience there. I do love farm to table places since they not only support local farmers but also the results are typically superb. Here, they not only started with the great local ingredients, but the magic came from how they prepared and served it. I started off with their farm fresh salad which included a variety of goodies-- roasted corn, goat cheese, couscous, a blend of different flavors that really worked well. It was nice they didn't supersaturate it with dressing like some places, and the dressing was perfectly light but flavorful. It was such a fresh and delicious salad. Also be sure to say "yes" to their bread if you desire it. It was so amazing--warm and soft on the inside, firmer on the outside. It came with peach in clarified butter--it was heaven. I almost felt a bit of guilt as if I were eating a homemade, exquisite form of a peach pie before my dinner. What a great way to start a meal. I went with the Chantel Farms Ribeye daily special for my entree. It came with buttermilk mashed potatoes on the bottom, followed by the 16 oz charbroiled ribeye, a sweet and sour demi sauce with crispy arugula and mustard seeds on top. Definitely a unique combination of ingredients. I was tempted to ask to hold back the mustard seeds and demi since I typically only like mustard on hot dogs and "gravy" on dry turkey, but decided if I didn't like either, I could just remove them myself. So I left all as is since I wanted to see how all of these flavors and textures worked with each other. I was not disappointed. Though eating a rib eye this way was outside of my comfort zone (I love a simple, grilled rib eye), it was definitely a nice surprise and so full of flavor! I was super happy since I was able to take more than half of it with me so I could enjoy it again later. The service with Tyler also helped set the evening apart from other restaurant visits. His knowledge and perfect level of "checking in on things" added to the fabulous experience. The environment was relaxing and had enough activity from other tables and those at the bar, that made it very energizing. It was obvious others were enjoying their meals as well. I almost went again later in the week for a second dinner, but ended up checking out another place instead. Looking back I do wish I had returned here to try other things on their menu. Hats off to Executive Chef Benjamin Edward Banks and Sous Chef Katie Cronin for their "uniquely crafted southern cuisine" (per their website). From start to finish, though I was by myself, it was a memorable experience--from the incredibly interesting and beautiful decor, to the positive vibe and energy, and of course the comforting southern food and fabulous service. This is the most amazing restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't have a MICHELIN STAR RATING! The steak was the epitome of the perfect medium rare. The Dijon mustard mashed potatoes were an amazing compliment to the steak. The Brussel sprouts, and the desserts we had were amazing. I wish I would've taken more picture but I was so mind blown that this wasn't Michelin rated! I was so caught up in the service and the ambience that I could do nothing but imagine what all I was going to say for this review. This is the easiest 5 star review I've EVER given. Stopped in for dinner. I was happy to see the sign in the Rookery because I was lost in the location. This is reached by climbing stairs, so he prepared no elevator. They have a farm to table concept with a select menu. I ordered the burger 8/10, so it was flavorful juicy and seasoned. And the fries had some nice seasoning on them. The staff, food, and ambiance are top notch. I had a 16oz Rib-eye and it was amazing. I believe this may be the best restaurant in the whole state. We arrived in Macon without a reservation and 20mins before scheduled closing. The place was packed, Kevin the manager greeted us with a can do attitude and assured us he would make it happen we would be served. We were relieved and what happened next was a culinary WIN! My husband and I dined here on a Friday night for our anniversary. We made reservations and arrived about 15 minutes early, but it took 20 minutes to find parking in the crowded bustling downtown Macon. We recently moved to Middle Georgia from Atlanta and was told that downtown Macon was the place to dine if we wanted good food and atmosphere. When we finally found the restaurant, we walked inside the pub downstairs and was told Dovetail was upstairs. As I walked up the stairs, it was obvious that I was entering a warm and inviting dining establishment. I loved the Rustic decor from the artwork to the unique lighting,it was an entire vibe. The hostess was friendly and wished us a happy anniversary upon arrival. We were seated immediately and then greeted by an amicable waitress who also congratulated us on our special day. We started off with drinks, I had the Naked and Famous, and my husband enjoyed the Chili Weather bourbon drink. Both concoctions were well crafted and complex in flavor. As an appetizer, we ordered the Brussel Sprouts, which were crispy and tasty, possibly the best I have ever had. My husband and I both chose to order the Scottish Salmon entree and we added the mac and cheese as a side to share. Our meals were delicious, everything on our plates paired well, and each bite tasted like a party was happening in my mouth. Checked this place out for my cousins graduation. Had a reservation for 10, Jason was our waiter. Did an amazing job. We brought our own wine, since it was a special occasion. They charge you a cork fee, but that was nice to do. Drink menu has a lot of options. For appetizers we had the pork belly, the push ups and devil eggs. I do not live in Macon but my friend does. I have gone to this restaurant twice because my friend and I believe it's the best restaurant in Macon. I highly recommend it. However, even though I gave it a five star, they really really need to figure out temperatures of food. Both times, something on our plates were cold. I'm thinking they prepare somethings ahead of time and heat it up. This time my pasta was cold, her grits and corn were cold too. I truly hope they figure this out. I never send back my food or complain, which I didn't do either time. Hoping management reads this and considers figuring out where they are going wrong. read more

End of last year, for my November birthday we went here. It's taken me this long to have the energy to write this review. To start, we got up the 2 long flights of stairs (I'm 63, spouse is 70yo). We were told management decided not to maintain the elevator due to high costs). We arrived a few minutes before they opened and were informed we'd have to wait in the stairwell with no bench. We were asked if we had a reservation ...we did not - it was our first time there- and we asked if we could sit inside and look at a menu and were told NO. We finally got in (only one small group behind us). The restaurant was empty. We were told we'd have to be served at the bar, and had an awkward conversation with the manager who did finally agree that not all the bookings were for 5-6:30pm. We got a seat but it felt very unfriendly. Food was ok (spinach listed as a veg was really a garnish on the filet which was 15-20$ more than in Milly and not any better), waiter was fine. Felt we paid almost 200$ to be treated poorly. Not the fun night out we'd hoped for. read more

My boyfriend and I have been here a few times and always enjoy our food. Most of the time we belly up to the bar and just order a few drinks and appetizers but tonight we decided to order some actual food off the menu. Let me first start off with giving props to Ashley, our bar server. She was excellent, worked with me on how I really enjoy my martini and then made a really great cocktail that was the special feature of the night. Tasted like a margarita but less tart. She was very professional and took great care of us at the bar. We started off with the cheese plate. I love that they tell you where the cheeses came from (usually local) and their jams are just to die for. It's a great start to getting your mouth ready for your meal. I ordered the small plate scallops and it came with pimento cheese risotto and bacon and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend ordered the special features wagu ribeye and it came with crispy Brussels sprouts which I preferred over the Brussels sprouts in the balsamic vinaigrette sauce. He ordered the steak medium rare but as you can see, it's more like medium well, which I like prefer medium to medium well but it was even too done for me. We managed through it because it came with a gravy that helped with the flavor. Overall the meal was enjoyable and the service was excellent. We will still continue to stop in because overall we really enjoy our night at Dovetail. I like the ambiance of the darker lighting, giving you a more romantic and intimate feel. Our bill with two cocktails each, an appetizer, small plate, side dish, and the wagu steak was $185, which isn't bad for the quality food and service. If you are in the Macon area, stop by. We had one night in Macon and started with drinks at the bar near our hotel. The bartender said Dovetail was the best restaurant in Macon and after dining there, we couldn't agree more! We had the deviled egg appetizer and then shared the filet and scallops with pimento cheese risotto. Both meals had unique flavors/ twists on what can be common dishes and they were cooked absolutely perfectly. I would eat the pimento cheese risotto daily if I could. I also appreciated that they split the dishes and plated them for us individually knowing that we were going to share. Our dinner was phenomenal and our server was kind and knowledgeable. Upscale food, relaxed atmosphere. The burrata on sourdough, delicious! Quail with mulberry vinaigrette over brown rice risotto, I want more! But dinner was the lowly burger risen to new heights. Tomme cheese, oyster and lion's mane mushrooms, a buttery brioche bun. I'm in heaven!!! To top it off, the lemon bar with basil blueberry ice cream. After a couple of unfortunate dining-out experiences in the Macon area, the Dovetail gave us something positive to remember from our weekend there. We were served by the delightful Amelia who embodied the perfect combination of friendly demeanor and ability to chat effortlessly, knowledge of the restaurant's offerings and timely service. We had the peanut crusted sea bass and scallops and everything was delicious. The risotto served with the scallops was extraordinarily yummy! A particularly delightful discovery was one of their nonalcoholic beers: Untitled Art (brand) "Orange Peel Wit." Delicious!! A manager stopped by to chat at one point and she was equally friendly. Loved the vibe as soon as I walked in. Bar was busy and full but had a seat available. I ordered a red wine, deviled eggs and filet. The eggs were AMAZING- but you have to add the Hot Chocolate Pepper sauce. OMG I wanted to take this home!! Not sure what happened but it took well over an hour for my filet to come out - after reminding them / asking where it was. I'll give the staff the benefit of the doubt because they were busy. But not too happy having to wait so long and I'm turn eat a steak so late. I will go back when in town. So many things on the menu and what others ordered that they are doing the food right. read more
