The best ice cream AND ICES anywhere! Inexpensive with very generous portions!

Thought this would be over rated.... It's not... Ice cream made in house and it's excellent.. Must try if nearby.

Well worth the drive! It's definitely one of those places that make you feel super nostalgic. Great tasting ice cream. I like it better then Denville dairy whose ice cream taste like marshmallows for some reason. There's not great parking though, But the great flavors make up for it. read more

seriously the best ice cream ever. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night craving it. I always get the rum raisin with pineapple. Their flavors just taste better, not fake. All of their fruit flavored ice cream just tastes soo good! I prefer it over other places in the area. It tastes nostalgic. We had read about this place when looking at the reviews for the Dover Grill next door, and decided to check it out as well. I wanted a plain soft serve cup, and was a bit astounded at the price of a small (I should have ordered the kiddie cup - that might have been better). Serving size was decent for the price, but the ice cream WAS SO HEAVY! I'm used to lighter tasting soft serve like Dairy Queen, and couldn't manage to finish it. Way to heavy tasting and not at all like a soft serve that I so enjoy. They might have other good items, but we will stick with Dairy Queen and other ice cream places when we want a real treat. read more

I am not one into soft serve...typically I seek out chunky artisan ice creams full of scrumptious raisins or nuts or scoop likes of Van Leeuven from Brooklyn. In Dover Dairy, I used to buy the hard ice cream. But once I tried their soft serve I cannot go back to only hard serve. Their banana soft serve with liquid chocolate cover/dip is the best!! Their ice cream has velvety smooth texture with amazingly real flavor. The sweetness is just perfect, even slightly low, which in American desert making is typically unheard of. The chocolate dip hardens perfectly to create an old fashioned shell that I just looove to break. The chocolate cover has perfect amount of fat resulting in amazing tap and crack reminding me of then 10 cent ice cream bars I used to buy in Czech Republic when I was 6... Basically Dover Dairy is my subtle connection to my childhood. Too bad they don't serve banana soft serve all season... read more

I've been to countless ice cream shops and in my opinion they are all a dime a dozen. When you are young anything goes, but as your taste buds mature you realize that there truly is good ice cream and fabulous ice cream. The Dover Dairy Maid is the best ice cream shop on so many levels. Its retro old-skool design brings you back to a time when mom-and-pop businesses dominated the world and were once the norm. You know they must be doing something right when people are willing to patiently wait in lines that often run out the door...and you don't hear them make a peep! That is unheard of in Jersey. This place really is heaven on earth. I am the type of person that when I know that someone makes something great I will go back and order it time after time. After taste testing the Chocolate soft serve at many different places I have given the D.D.M., as I call it for short, the title of Best Chocolate Soft Serve. Although I do pretty much always order a cup of that, my husband is the daring and venturesome ice cream aficionado. The good thing about that is that I get to sample some of his without having to compromise and give up my addiction...that's the reason why I take him along. :) The D.D.M. has a myriad of soft serve flavors, some of which are offered on a seemingly monthly basis (note-closed for winter): Chocolate, Vanilla, Fat-free Chocolate, Fat-free Vanilla, Coconut, Mango, Blueberry, Black Raspberry, Strawberry, Banana, Peanut Butter, Fat-free Oreo, and Fat-free Red Velvet. There are typically ten flavors available at all times which is the largest soft serve selection that I have found anywhere...that is if you are talking about the type that doesn't come from a ketchup pump and get mixed in with a base. I cannot even categorize that "stuff" as ice cream...still haven't figured out what it is. My husband's favorite licks are the Peanut Butter soft serve and the Blueberry Cheesecake hard ice cream. He has also enjoyed the Dulce de Leche, Milky Way, and Mounds flavors of hard ice cream. I once got a Mint Chocolate Chip shake and it was so good that I think next time I go back (a.k.a. tonight), that I will order it. I'm feeling sort of wildly experimental lately. Dover Dairy Maid is a place that I will never forget, that someday I will sadly long for...but a place that at present time I will often frequent and gladly welcome my addiction. I don't know why the NJ mags don't give recognition and kudos to such a great institution...the rest of Jerzey don't know what they are a missin'! Nice ice cream place! Went here July 4th after finding most places on Rt 46 closed for the holiday. Did the job- nothing interesting or unique- just good ice cream with standard flavors and good service. Worth the trip. read more

The hard ice cream is outstanding (homemade, according to a sign inside), and the help at the counter was terrific to help us choose which flavors. The other local customers were raving that everything is always great here. I see they were chosen as Morris County Best by readers in 2012. The prices are terrific too. We will be coming here any time we are in the area! read more

Do not under any circumstances get the black raspberry soft serve. It's definitely not the most delicious ice cream on the planet. Under no circumstances should you get it in a Flurry, mixed with Oreos whose choclatey goodness makes the tart ice cream sing for joy. I would never go here twice a day to get my soft black raspberry fix or stand online for 20 minutes just to taste it's creamy goodness. Oh who am I kidding... It's the best ice cream I've ever tasted and I dream about it all winter long!!! read more

Was a big fan of Denville Dairy, but now that I have found Dover Dairy there's no going back! Service is fast, and the ice cream is awesome! Not much else to say. read more
