Dr. Johnson has been my dermatologist for several years, and he is very knowledgeable about my needs. His office can get quite busy during the day, but he always takes the time to explain everything thoroughly. I also appreciate that he makes sure I have my prescription refills when needed. Scheduling an appointment was very difficult because my referral wasn't yet received? After over multiple attempts to schedule an appointment, the first availability was for the next month. I arrived 10 minutes early and had to wait over an hour past my appointment time. Also, the waiting room was packed and uncomfortable. Trying to get a signed documentation for my skin condition and a prescription has been challenging too! However, this practice accepts Medicaid so can't complain. read more

She informed me that the doctor was in a procedure running late which I totally get. The door was cracked and I could hear every word about me she was gossiping to the other nurses in the hallway. I heard that I was "ungrateful" for them allowing me to be a bit late (which I even called ahead of time to confirm it was ok / if I needed to reschedule or anything which they told me it was fine and to come in), that I was "confrontational and rude", and the rest makes me sick to my stomach and made me want to tear up. I don't care what the situation is but as a nurse, you treat your patients with kindness and care. Not make false, un-true statements about them behind their back. I served in the US military and that's not how any veteran should be treated or any person you don't know. This was my second appointment with Dr. Johnson. My first appointment with him went so well I had to come back for another treatment. I initially went to a different dermatologist office to treat my keloid scar and the doctor there hurt me during the treatment and his injection was ineffective. Thank goodness I didn't give up and opted to try again this time with Dr. Johnson. He is gentle, kind, knowledgeable and didn't hurt me at all. He made sure I was numbed up well before the injection. From his first treatment, my keloid scar completely flattened where I asked him to inject it. So I came back again today to get the rest of it done. His medical assistant was also very gentle and personable. We both decided Dr. Johnson is not allowed to retire LOL, which he plans to do in about 4 years. I suggest you check him out before he does. Anytime a need arises to see the Doctor, I have found the staff to be very accommodating in trying to schedule me in on short notice as well as very personable, understanding and helpful. Dr Johnson is amazing but his receptionists are the worst. As a long time patient of over 25 years, I was asked to change an appt. which was fine, but 2 months out???? Not acceptable. After explaining the reason for my visit, a suspicious mole, they still wouldnt change to a sooner appt. I can call every day to see if there is a cancellation - really? This review is long overdue. I have been a patient of Dr. Johnson for almost 20 years. He and his staff have taken care of my skin problems/maintenance for that long and continue to do so. Can I say that Dr. Johnson keeps my skin looking great. I love his staff and Dr. Johnson's professionalism and care. His staff always makes time when I am in Honolulu and want to come in for a chem peel which they administer. I've had enough of these, that I think I could do it myself. lol. When I need an appointment with the Doctor, I try to schedule my appointment so I am the first one in the morning. Yes, Dr. Johnson usually runs a little late. Most doctors do. This shouldn't deter you from seeing Dr. Johnson. Finding a good dermatologist is a challenge. You might want to see Dr. Johnson is you're looking for one. read more

I was referred here by my Primary Care Doctor and at first was a little skeptical after reading the reviews online but I knew I had to see a dermatologist for my hyper hidrosis and decided to go with my PCP's recommendation. Also, this is my first time seeing a dermatologist so I decided I might as well give it a shot. First off, I was running late...like by half an hour and either their office wasn't busy today but I was still seen, almost immediately after filling out new patient paperwork, which was awesome considering the fact that this was a specialist. So 1-star for that. Dr. Douglas was extremely knowledgeable on everything related to hyper hidrosis and the treatment options which wasn't anything different from what I'd read online but nice to hear a professional speak about it and of course, prescribe the needed medication. So another star. The Nurse/Medical Assistant helping him was friendly. I wish I had remembered her name but I have a follow up appointment next week so maybe I'll update this then with her name. Another star. I also had a skin tag that I basically ignored for a few years and I showed Dr.Douglas and even though they were probably half an hour or so out from closing, he took care of it right then and there. Final star. As I mentioned above, this is my first experience with a dermatologist and although Dr. Douglas did start and kinda keep a conversation, his Nurse/Medical Assistant made me feel a bit more comfortable so I'd give them half a star but I'm pretty new to the Yelp-world and I don't know how to add half a star.. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I realized that they didn't tell me how to maintain these 6 stitches I received...pretty sure I could just google it so I still rank them pretty high. read more

I had seen Dr. Douglas Johnson approx. 5 yrs ago and was satisfied with his services. BUT, I recently made an appointment and when I arrived (which was by a long bus ride) I was told "We don't take this insurance as it's out of network" I explained it was the same insurance used and accepted on my previous visit. Again, the receptionist said, "We don't take this insurance." When I called to make my appointment I was not asked the reason for my visit or for any insurance information which could have saved me from missing a day of work and a long bus ride. Dr. Douglas Johnson needs to check his front office staff as they are inefficient and sloppy with their, or lack of, work ethic. The whole experience was a major inconvenience for me. read more

As promised, I'm back after my visit today. Everyone in the office was friendly and smiling and my wait was short. It does appear that they have resolved some of the scheduling issues of the past. That can be stressful itself, in addition to dealing with people who are not happy with the wait. I work with the public and I know how one's mood can be effected when there are less-than-ideal situations. There was none of that today and the waiting room was pretty full. I also like that he has New Yorker Magazine, which beats the usual People I see in most Dr. offices! Makes me WANT to wait so I can finish a story. But, I digress... As always, Dr. Johnson was very thorough and took time to explain what the different spots I brought to his attention were, which needed attention and which were either insignificant or should be watched for changes. Of the twelve or so that I showed to him he removed four, three by freezing and one with scalpel. That was the only one he said that looked cancerous. He said to come back in three months (I usually have a yearly complete exam due to my family history, but he wants me to return sooner to take another look at some spots we are "watching".) We spoke about my sister and he still does remember her. He was not, in fact, an intern but practicing dermatology and referred her to the surgeon who butchered her. He had no part in that, which I already knew, and disagreed with the surgeon's course of action with her case. All I can say are good things about the doctor, his integrity and his vast knowledge of his field. read more

He was a good doctor and tried to connect to my daughter but his staff are rude. I've never been to a dermatologist but cause my daughter had to be seen by one I went in thinking that they would all be nice because of course patients should be there main priority. I would go back because he was nice but he needs to talk to his staff in how to treat the patients. I was waiting inside the room cause he said that he was getting a prescription and the nurse that was helping him later comes in with an attitude and tells me you can leave at anytime now we called your prescription in. And I said ok sorry never been to a dermatologist before and wasn't sure how it worked and she rolled her eyes at me and walked out. Dr Johnson has the coolest bedside manner, calmly explaining what every little spot is on your skin. Strongly recommend for young men with suspicious spots or growths in their private areas. He's seen it all; is totally non judgmental, and excuses his stenographer when you drop your shorts! And from personal experience, he's got no problem with gay men's health issues. His years of experience put an arsenal of new AND old tech ideas to work for you. He's seen it all. (btw: Great comfort zone for guys to show maladies on or around their junk when need be! I'm also told by my neighbor "same for women."). I'm over 60 so sun worship issues and aging skin are becoming problematic! 10+ years of seeing me and he's never let me down. He's even called me at home on a Saturday after he did his own lab research on a very peculiar issue I was dealing with when I had my appointment late on a Friday afternoon -- he took a tissue sample out of concern to further analyze. So back a couple days later. Appointment is 8:30 am, the doctor just came into work at 8:52 am. Really? You schedule appoints at 8:30 and come in 20 mins later? He has helped me by identifying and removing several basal cell carcinomas with great skill and compassion. I trust his expert opinion and high level of care. I also really love his office staff! This guy is a total joke. Two hours late today for an appointment. No apologies. While waiting in the exam room I noticed the equipment and overall cleanliness. I told this A hole that I've seen better equipment in the slums of baja mexico. If you want to wait in an non A/C waiting room then enter an exam room that has equipment from the 40's, go for it. It's obvious he is a cheapskate hoarder. I feel sorry for the women that work there. It's very clear that they are unhappy to work in such pig pen. His ability as a Dr. Is a 2 out of a scale 1-10. I was referred to see Dr. Douglas Johnson by the Queen's referral line, for my skin rash problems. This has been bothering me for the last four years. I went to his office located in POB I. It was time for me to go into his examination room when the medical aid called me in. I thought I was going to be treated by a nice/kind doctor who allowed patients to decide what they want for their treatment plan. Boy was I wrong! Douglas came into the examination room, and I then proceeded to explain to him about my skin rash problem that I had been suffering from for the past couple of years. He then goes straight into telling me to under go UV radiation light therapy. I was concerned as UV radiation light therapy has risk of burning your skin. So I told him my concern. Then he acted cocky and told his medical aid, "Go ahead and document in his chart that he refused this plan." Douglas then went on to tell me that he recommended that I take some kind of immune-suppressing medication for the rash. I mean come on, this is a very strong medication that can affect my kidneys, and I am a young person!!!! I told him that I would contemplate on taking that strong medication, but didn't want to get the drug for that day. Again, "write in his chart that he refused my treatment." At that point, I'm like F-you. I basically wasted my time and money visiting this dermatologist who pretty much wanted his own treatment plan, over my treatment plan. Yes, I am not a doctor, but at the same time, I have been treated by several other dermatologists where they gave me treatment options and honored my decision. Patient autonomy is very important in the field of medicine. Unfortunately, Douglas lost his mind and don't adhere to letting patients contemplate on which medication works for them. Overall, I am not going back to Douglas' office for skin care. I am currently getting treatment from another dermatologist. I DO NOT recommend you see Douglas for any treatment. Go elsewhere, and do not listen to Queen's referral line if they suggest "Douglas Johnson" for a dermatologist!!!!! read more

I moved to from Honolulu to Kailua 7 years ago and needed a dermatologist for chronic seborrheic scalp dermatitis, yearly skin checks, etc. I can pretty much treat the scalp dermatitis myself since I've had it for many years, but occasionally it flares up or I need refills on the medications. When I initially went to Hawaii Dermatology Centers in Kailua, I saw Sarah Howell. She NEVER ONCE looked at my scalp, even on the initial visit. Her checks of my skin seemed merely cursory and hasty. After seeing her a few times over the years, I switched to Dr. Bessinger. He came across as being more knowledgeable with a larger repertoire of treatment options than Dr. Howell, but, again, like her, NEVER ONCE looked at my scalp dermatitis! How could a dermatologist know how to treat something if s/he never looks at it, doesn't know the extent or severity, and only takes the patient's word on what it even is?! I have now moved back to Honolulu, back to Dr. Douglas Johnson. I saw him 3 months ago as the scalp dermatitis was acting up and I was experiencing hair loss. I actually took a bag of my hair I had collected to show him (I thought he would just write me off as an old woman experiencing normal age-related hair loss and not take me seriously!). He checked my whole scalp with his magnifier, calling out to his nurse the size of each dermatitis area, who duly noted it down. He gave me a course of treatment, which I followed closely, and now, 3 months later, my scalp is so much better - yesterday, Dr. Johnson couldn't find any evidence of the dermatitis (yes, he actually looked at my scalp again!). As far as the hair loss, he did take me seriously! He did a hair loss test (and agreed with me that my hair was falling out faster than it should be), ordered two blood tests, and referred me to the internet to do some research on telogen effluvium. Now, 3 months later, I thought the hair loss had lessened. He did another hair loss test and agreed. He offered suggestions for treating it. I didn't give 5 stars, as I often have to wait a long time past my scheduled time to see him. But, maybe that's a good sign. Maybe he has a heavy patient load because he is good at what he does and spends time with each patient. read more

I really don't know whether to rate this 2 or 3 stars. I mean my first impression of dr Johnson and his staff was iffy. Making an apt was about a 2 month wait since he's a very popular man. Waited a very long time for the apt I'd day a 30-60 min wait, dr came in with an assistant who took notes. The actual appt time took About 10 min at most. I only come here when I have acne issues. The first time I came he prescribed me differin, which highly sensitizes the skin like retina would. didn't like it, so stopped using it. Returned with worse acne issues about 6mo later and same thing, waited 2 months for the appt, took super long waiting in the wait area, staff doesn't look friendly, actual apt took 10 min this time I left with a rx for antibiotics. That worked but it was hard to upkeep, everyday... forever. I started to notice it stopped working as well, so now I'm back. Bigger acne, new issues and waiting again in the office about an hour after my apt is supposed to be. Mind you im 27 years old and never had acne until I was 21. It seems to be getting worse as I get older. Dr johnson had more bedside manner the second time I came, so third times the charm, this will really determine if I'll be back or not. read more

Dr. Johnson is a nice guy, an okay doctor but is policy is HORRIBLE. He schedule patients every 10 min, knowing that he will not be able to be on time. I had to go with my mom both times we waited over an hour. The first time he came in like nothing was the matter. didn't apologize for running late nothing. The second time after waiting 40 min in the waiting room we left. I understand he is a doctor but he shouldn't keep his patients waiting 40-60 min. I have seen many specialist that have better time management. I would recommend not seeing him unless you have two hours to kill for 5 min of facetime with the doctor. read more

I called to make appt. for my daughter and the receptionist asked first is "what is your daughter insurance?" And I said "hmsa quest" and she said next appt for quest patient is next month (I called January). I took the date 2/9/2016 @ 11:15am. We check in at 10:47.... Passed hour and half they never called us yet. I ask the lady in the front and told me 11:50 is our appt. it's already 12:40 pm and we never see the doctor yet!!!!! What is the used of making an appt if they don't follow.... This my last visit for this clinic and I don't want to recommend to anybody to come to this doctor office..... All the employee is not friendly.... They don't even bother to say sorry for waiting that long...... read more
