I wanted to walk into a business, buy a machine that was assembled, and go home and get to work on the driveway. And this is exactly what Medinger offered. Joe Medinger was informative regarding different brands and models. He put gas and oil in the machine I bought, gave me a brief lesson on how to operate and even loaded it into the bed of my truck. And 30 minutes after walking into Medingers, I was clearing off my driveway. I did not receive any of the poor service the other Yelpers did. In fact, the previous reviews almost kept me away. I had been wanting to find a solution to my lannon stone planter in the living room for quite some…read moretime and then stumbled across Summit Granite for the answer. I'm sure that an indoor planter in an area that doesn't get sun seemed like a great idea in the 1960s when the home was built, but I never loved the idea. I first checked out the big box stores but they didn't want anything to do with my tiny project (50 inches x 20 inches), but Summit Granite was more than happy to assist. I sent an email through their website and Justyna replied quickly with a rough estimate and an offer to come in and take a look at their remnants. When we stopped in, she was great; warm and welcoming and offered suggestions that helped in selecting the perfect color/pattern for our space at a decent price. I have to go three stars, unfortunately as the pickup experience was quite poor. Justyna advised to call the day of the scheduled pickup to confirm everything was a go, which I did. The person that answered the phone was flustered by my call and asked if he could call me back. I reluctantly agreed and over an hour later I received a call that it was ready for pickup and if I could come and get it immediately that would be best (I would have been there far earlier if he could have told me it was ready when I initially called...), so I dropped everything and left. Before hanging up, I asked where I should park and was told to park out front. 20 minutes later when I arrived, I was told that I will actually need to park in the back... But first I was taken back to the piece and when we arrived, it was upside down and topped with random trash, including a Pepsi can. I get that my project was likely a fraction of the cost of the average kitchen remodel, but that doesn't mean I like my item to be treated literally like garbage. Thankfully the piece looked amazing and once I went back out the building and moved my car, we got it loaded up into my car.

Now, however, they have a new trick. Buy a small canvas bag ($0.99 at any store--$2.50 at Ace Hardware, which tells you something about their willingness to gouge the customer for the same or poorer quality firewood) to load up with loose wood and cart it back to your car. Want more than one bundle? Either buy more bags or shlep the wood to your car on multiple back and forth trips. ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE BUSINESS MODEL. Lost all my business over that. No thanks, not interested in paying $2.50 for a sh@tty bag that at any other box store is a buck or less. When I called and complained, the manager's excuse? lmao "We can't control the vendors who aren't bundling it anymore." No, but you sure as @!#$ can choose to lower the cost of the bags, or just throw them in for free and charge an extra $1 for the bundle--bag the wood and have it waiting. For $7.50+ tax, I expect the wood to be in the bag and awaiting my payment and trip back to the car--ONE TRIP. NOT three or four shlepping loose wood back and forth. Lost my business, and you deserve to lose all of it. Will be spreading the word across social media to avoid this store like the plague.

Pricing is generally higher than big box stores but the value added is the personal service from the staff which is usually spot on. (And in fairness, they may not always be able to compete on some items as they have less volume on many things.). The recent expansion was a benefit to the community. That said, those of us who are long time residents remember the original Ace Hardware in the Town and Country shopping center that was the place to shop for just about anything in Kenosha. That store was a local icon. I have a feeling that with the right marketing that kind of store would go over well again in Kenosha. I also wish the store hours were a bit longer. But this friendly store is a community asset nonetheless.
