I started going to Dr. Takeuchi just as he was taking over the practice more than 10 years ago. I mentioned that I had had a lot of dental problems and he told me that if I followed his advice and got my teeth cleaned at least 3 times a year I would not have any more dental problems. Was he right? Let's put it this way, we moved to Hilo, HI a few years back and we both still go to Dr. Takeuchi for dental care. An appointment with Dr Takeuchi's clinic is like going home to see old friends; his staff is super-competent and wonderful, the facility in downright classy and he has and uses state of the art EVERYTHING! (free WiFi, Yippeee!) This is by far the BEST dentist you will ever want to have! When I was young I had the worst dentist experience causing me to avoid the dentist office like the plague! About 20 years ago I fell on Dr Takeuchi really by the grace of God.. He is amazing for adults and excellent with kids ( he has the best toys for them....) He is always learning new things and new technics to make your visit comfortable. He is gentle, considerate, he really do care for his patients teeth just as he would with is own family. No one likes going to the dentist. It's like having to bring your car in for an oil change or for new tires. Who wants to do that? With that said, I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Takeuchi and his team. My sister had been recommending I see Dr. Takeuchi for years (she had been referred by her in-laws). They have been great with my niece and nephew. My sister had already convinced my mom who ended up having extensive dental work done. My mom is not a fan of seeing the dentist, she raved about them, and so I had surmised they must be very patient. I finally gave in as I had moved and needed a local option and since everyone else was already part of the fan club, I figured I'd finally join in. Every interaction and experience I have had has been a positive one and I can see why family/friends recommend Dr. Takeuchi and his team. The initial phone call, welcome packet in the mail to fill out my basic information in advance to expedite the process, and my 'tour' and introduction to the staff was incredibly efficient and pleasant. I appreciate how Dr. Takeuchi performs a thorough assessment, presenting his findings with clear digital pictures and a clear explanation and plan of action. All of this is done with some warmth and personality, which makes the whole process so much nicer. After he presented his findings and gave me the opportunity to ask questions, I was introduced to someone in his office to review my insurance and discuss the costs/billing (to submit an insurance pre-authorization or not, for example). In a manner of 8 weeks, I had a total of 6 visits including my initial one. Everyone was great and put me at ease. Scheduling was easy and flexible. Each visit was incredibly efficient without feeling rushed, and I appreciated Dr. Takeuchi's talent and expertise. Dr Takeuchi sent out an email solicitation requesting reviews by patients and ex-patients. Several years ago, as a new patient, Dr Takeuchi xrayed my teeth. He told me I required 8 fillings. So, I'm not one of those people afraid of going to the dentist. I have even had fillings done without any form of anesthesia. (I know...I'm a badass!) When I go to the dentist I want a great experience, a knowledgeable staff, reasonably priced procedures (good ROI) and the feeling that I would refer people to the establishment. Dr. Takeuchi's office was the complete package for me. I was in a terrible car accident when I was 19 in which I was rear ended (he going 100 mph while I was going 60) and made close acquaintance with my steering wheel...face first. (Well hello there!) =\ Prior to that experience I had spent many, many days in the dentist and orthodontist offices over the years trying to achieve that "perfect smile." That resulted in a bridge smack dab in the center of my upper teeth. I have cracked and chipped said bridge a while back trying to get a freakin Nyquil capsule packet open when I was bedridden. (I think those are adult-proof!) I have had many dentists tell me that to fix it I will need to get the bridge replaced and a bunch of other things...which have been quoted as high as $10k. I just never felt right about those experiences and have been looking for an office that will look out for my best interest as well as providing great cosmetic services, preventative maintenance and customer service. He recommended repairing the chip temporarily, to make the most out of my current bridge, and fixing my gum line to make the smile I have more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing in appearance. For anyone who knows me...I smile a LOT!!! I am really bad with names but remember each one of them as they made my experience this morning above and beyond anything I have ever experienced at a dental visit before. I was first greeted by Leslie at the front desk. Jen is a RDA who gave me a tour of the offices and did all of my xrays. "The man" gave me a comprehensive evaluation and description of the concerns he discovered as well as the cosmetic issues I had. Then Deena did a terrific teeth cleaning to finish it off. Each one of them is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and keeps you informed throughout the process. The offices are very technologically advanced and hygienic, as well. They definitely cater to those with fear of dental offices with TV's on the ceiling, educational videos for patients to watch and equipment used to be as thorough and painless as possible for a pleasant experience. They finished the visit going over a plan for restoring my teeth, to include payment schedules and detailed appointment visits. The cost is VERY reasonable and I am actually looking forward to my next visits at the office...for the interaction with the staff as well as getting a smile I want to show off even more! =) read more

Please keep in mind that the review below is based on a single visit to the office. My girlfriend has been a patient of Dr. Takeuchi for a while now, so when I decided to switch to a local dentist from my family one in VA, I decided to check him out. She was kind enough to ask if the office was accepting new patients (yes) and what the price of a cleaning was ($110), so I called and made an appointment. Even better, they gave her a refer-a-friend coupon, valid for "$75 off [your] initial treatment in our office," and I made it a point to mention the coupon when I called. Visiting the office, I really liked Dr. Takeuchi. He was friendly, patient, extremely knowledgeable, and up to date on all the latest dental technology. Moreover, his style of medicine seems to be based on giving patients all the information they need to make good choices about their care so that they can advocate for themselves. My girlfriend had mentioned that she thought Dr. Takeuchi was a little on the expensive side (there always seemed to be something wrong with her teeth that required a couple hundred dollars worth of work), but I'm a big fan of preventative medicine: spending a few hundred dollars now to deal with problems in their early stages is much better than waiting until things spiral out of control. Overall, I was extremely impressed by Dr. Takeuchi, and my intuition is that the quality of care he provides is superb. The problems started when the "financial coordinator" came out to talk to me. At this point, other than x-rays and some gum measurements, nothing had been done to my teeth: I was still waiting for my cleaning. It soon became apparent, however, that the cleaning would have to be a completely separate appointment...and that the "initial consultation" I had just undergone was going to set me back $187. The price they had quoted my girlfriend was right: they'd just neglected to mention to her (or to me, when I called to make the appointment) that one had to undergo a preliminary evaluation---at nearly double the cost---as well. This seemed kind of lame: I don't have dental insurance, so I expect the dollars that I'm spending on health care to provide significant value. Moreover, as a PhD student at a top-ranked school, my time is extremely valuable: to pay $187 to be given a needlessly-prolonged tour of the office and watch an instructional video on dental hygiene was a bit of an affront. But, times are tough, and you often get what you pay for, so I booked the cleaning, and my next appointment after that, pulled out my $75 coupon, and handed over my credit card. "Oh, you want to use that coupon for your initial treatment," said the financial coordinator: "I'll be right back." Sure enough, back she came...with a credit card receipt for $187. Clearly I had missed something, so I asked why the coupon hadn't been deducted from the bill. "You can only use the coupon for your first *treatment*," she said: "not for your initial consultation." "Wow," I said. "Then why did you just... Look, that wasn't clear at all: I even made a point to mention that I had the coupon when I called to make an appointment. This is beginning to seem a bit like a bait and switch to me..." "Don't be silly!" said the financial coordinator in a tone clearly reserved for pets and small children. "Of course it's not. I'm sorry if *you* didn't understand, but nobody else has been confused. I suppose if $75 *really* means that much to you, I'll see what I can do..." "No," I said. "I don't want you to get in trouble for violating what's clearly an office policy. Here's the signed receipt, and I'd appreciate it if you'd cancel those appointments we just booked." "Oh, come on... You've got to be *kidding* me," she said. In text, it is difficult to convey how snotty and derisive this woman's tone was: suffice to say, I have not been spoken to like that in at least ten years. I left. The one paragraph summary is this. I think Dr. Takeuchi is probably an excellent dentist. Moreover, I could honestly give a shit about the $75. However, I don't appreciate being manipulated, or belittled. I have a very sensitive bullshit detector, and Dr. Takeuchi's office set mine off several times. Medicine is about taking care of people, and his office seems to be more interested in playing silly games to maximize revenue than establishing relationships with patients. Until this changes, I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time with him or his staff. read more

Yesterday I accidentally chipped my tooth when I was eating. I'm an exchange intern in the U.S and my health insurance doesn't cover dental issues unless it's something related to pain. I found this place on Yelp and made an appointment. They gave me one for the same day (thank God, because I didn't want to be with my tooth chipped for too long!!) and they were really nice on the phone. When I got there, the people were very friendly, nice and professional! I explained to the nurse what happened and immediately the Doctor took care of it. During the process, I was even able to watch TV and listen to music with headphones. I have to say that the Dr. did a GREAT job. My tooth looks even better than before and can tell that he used great materials. No pain, no blood and I feel so good with the work they did. I'm definitely coming back here :) read more

I had a dental emergency this last week! I called the office and even though I had never been to their office, I was seen within 2 hours! Dr Takeuchi and his entire staff are warm & welcoming. Dr Takeuchi spent time with me, I didn't feel rushed or hurried even though they squeezed me in to provide immediate relief. I had the first follow up yesterday, and following the procedure Dr Takeuchi contacted me himself to be sure I was doing OK, and gave me his cell number just in case! He is definitely the best DDS I've ever seen as an adult (I'm 50 y.o. now). He has high tech diagnostic tools that other DDSs just don't have. He finds issues sooner than anyone else would, and sits down with you to give you an idea of the cost and what he'd do if his teeth were your teeth. He's nothing short of amazing. Only downside, doesn't take insurance, so expensive due to that, but if you have a good dental plan (I do not) you will fare okay with the cost. He does payment plans too, with zero interest. I've even needed emergency attention on a weekend and referrals to the Doctor's colleagues for more specialized work. Dr. Takeuchi and staff have seen four generations of my family for over 30 years (before it was Dr. Takeuchi's practice, of course), and I myself have been seeing Deena, Leslie, Cyndi, Lynette, and Dr. D. since I was 18 when I switched from my kid dentist! They have very comfortable chairs, x-rays in every room, tvs in the celings with headphones, digital x rays, and other high-tech, state of the art technology. Everything about that practice is neat and organized, and I've never been in discomfort even with cavity fillings. Dr. Doug has brought this practice into the 21st century. Actually, I've been going to this dentist office for a very long time... long before it became Dr. Doug's practice. My hygienist there, Deena, rocks. She's tough love, for sure: very thorough on the semiannual cleanings. I get the full point inspection, and she lets me know if my numbers are slipping and/or if I have some potential problem areas where I need to brush or floss better. I am confident that I have healthy teeth and gums because of this dentist. I've never had a problem AT ALL with Leslie, the front office scheduler. In fact, she's been never anything less than sweeter-than-peach-pie, even when I have to reschedule an appointment that I may have missed. Then again, I've seen her twice a year for years and years. I would recommend this practice to anybody. My health plan covers his bills, too, so I really can't complain. But mainly, I can't imagine getting better care for my teeth and gums anywhere else. read more

Heaven help Dr. Takeuchi - he is able to manage three generations of my family members. Six of us are current patients, not to mention almost a dozen friends. I first saw Dr. Takeuchi when I had a toothache. He ended up sealing many teeth to prevent further problems, which I've found to be great advice in the years since I had this done. He is also up on the latest research in dentistry. Since I have two cleanings a year, many of his hygienists have worked on me. Just got some more great work done by Dr. Takeuchi. I had a crown replaced yesterday and I wish my other 27 teeth were that nice! I have a history of some issues that make being in the dentist chair painful and uncomfortable (rotator cuff injury, TMJ, difficulty breathing when laying flat, etc.) and since I expressed my trepidation, Dr. Takeuchi took the time to call me and discuss all my concerns. He wrote them all down so they could be addressed with solutions that would make it less like a "torture chamber" (my expression). It worked and the session where he had to drill off the old crown and do some work underneath, was not so bad at all. He was very careful and I left there feeling tired, but not traumatized or in pain. The new crown is absolutely beautiful and he also did what my previous dentist did not, which was polish it after adjusting the height so it felt as smooth as glass. My last dentist left it feeling rough and gritty, so I thought that they all ended up like that when the height was adjusted...which made me always prefer to leave the bite too high, rather than make it feel sandy in my mouth (which was nuts, but that's what I did). This time, I got the bite adjusted correctly AND it was polished smooth. Also, Gabby, the Dental Assistant, did and always does, a terrific job, from being attentive and friendly, yet taking extreme care with the job at hand, to making absolutely sure things are done right and that I wasn't in pain. The temporary she made was excellent and did not fall out, which is always a big concern of mine. The other staff members who stand out are Laurie (front desk) and Cyndi (finance), who are always nice to chat with while I'm waiting to go in, and who always take care of things with a smile. So...if you GOTTA go to the dentist - and you'd better!.....This is the place to go. read more

I have had a LOT of dental work over the years and been to a few dentists in the bay area, finally I have found somewhere that makes me feel safe, confident, totally at ease and know that I will have very little if any discomfort. I have been going to Dr. Takeuchi since 2012. Dr. Takeuchi was my moms dentist for many years. She had a fear of dentists and was very sensitive to the pain associated with dental work as am I. Dr. Takeuchi and his very caring and professional staff always made sure she was comfortable and relaxed by administering a mild sedation gas during her procedures. I also have become a person who undergoes routine and necessary dental work because I no longer dread or avoid the experience. Dr. Takeuchi and his staff are amazing! The day before Christmas Eve 2015 a corner piece of my front tooth chipped off and I was absolutely panicked. Dr Takeuchi fixed my tooth within 24 hours and I was good to go for all the photos that were taken of me and my granddaughter and rest of the family. He literally made my Christmas a wonderful one versus an anxiety-ridden one. I told him all I wanted for Christmas was my front tooth fixed and he made that happen! read more

The office is light, bright and cheerful with state of the art equipment and sedation if required. Let me start off by saying that Dr. Takeuchi's office possesses extremely high tech. and state of the art dental equipment. Also I would like to add that as a dentist, I personally give Dr. Taceuchi a slightly above average rating overall, however, his front office scheduler / or whatever she may be, is extremely RUDE! Because of her, I have switched dentists and also my experience has influenced 3 other individuals to discontinue their treatment at his office. This front office woman puts on a great show, let me tell you. She answers the phone very professional, she greets you always with a smile when you come through the front door. But the ONE time that something didn't quite go her way, the claws came out. I was having financial difficulties and because of my situation, I was experiencing delays in my treatment plan. Upon the completion of one of my visits..on my way out the door...she asked me if I would like to schedule my next visit to complete my cavity fillings. So I set up the appointment for a month later. But then not even 30 seconds after I asked her to please cancel that appointment and told her that I would call later that day to schedule because I needed to check my calender and also when I could save up the money (because also, this office's prices are SO high). She said fine, no problem...appointment cancelled...with a HUGE smile on her face. I went home with all intentions on setting up this appointment but some personal health issues took over my life and scheduling my next dental appointment slipped my mind. WELL....a month later...I get a phone call from this woman reminding me of my appointment the next morning with Dr. Takeuchi. Now wait a minute? I said to her..."We decided not to book that appointment. ..remember?" She came back at me with something like..."You mean you're not coming? We've set aside 2 hours for you. Dr. Takeuchi is not going to like this." Now THAT is not what set me off...what she said next did... she said something along the lines of this..."You know, Tara. You really need to start taking responsibility for your actions." WHOA!!! None of her business really. I'm an adult and I do not need to justify my actions to her, especially since this was entirely her fault. She is not my mother. Then she told me that she would charge me the missed appointment fee and I told her .."Do what you have to do." She didn't like that at all and started to go off on me even more and tell me that I'm making a habit of missing appointments. When in fact, I have NEVER missed an appointment EVER...and when I did, I made sure I cancelled at least 48 hours in advance. She argued with me and said..."Let's just see about that. I'm going to pull your chart. Hold one minute." I held just because I was steaming and was 2 seconds away from losing my composure and telling her to go to hell. She got back on the line and had nothing to say except..."Fine. Appointment cancelled." Because of this woman, Dr. Takeuchi's office has lost THREE paying customers. I feel bad for him because he is a very nice man and a great dentist but I refuse to go back to an office and be treated like a child. I have found a much better dentist closer to my home, with lower prices and an extremely awesome staff. Kudos to my new dentist. read more

Dr. Takeuchi and his staff are everything you could wish for in a dentist's office - professional, compassionate, and super friendly. They remember our names, what we do for a living, even our hobbies and interests. My husband has a major fear of dental work, and as a result, he had put off going to a dentist for so long that his teeth had gotten pretty bad. Most dentists he'd been to had either scoffed at or blatantly mocked his fears, but Dr. Takeuchi offers sedation dentistry for people like my husband, with no hint of judgment. The sedation is expensive, but for what my husband needed done, it was absolutely worth it. And for routine cleanings and fillings, they give him nitrous (for free!) to help him relax. The office is very clean, with state-of-the-art technology. Televisions in the ceilings complete with headphones offer a great distraction. Dr. Takeuchi and all the hygienists are very gentle and let you know exactly what they're doing as they're doing it. The front office staff, Laurie and Cyndi, are also incredibly friendly and accommodating. I've never had a bad experience here, and I recommend them to anyone looking for a good dentist, not just people with phobias, though of course they are especially good in that respect. read more

they ARE "as good as it gets"! i have not been there for a couple of years, and need to go back. i was reading the reviews, and was not surprised about any of them, except the negative one re: Leslie. there has to be more to that story than we are told, because there is not a kinder, more compassionate person ( except for the others in the office) then Leslie. she has worked with my "issues" with such thoughtfulness and care. i just had to rebutt ANY negativity re: that office!!!!! read more
